This work describes syntheses and electrochemical, spectroscopic, and bonding properties in a new series of dinuclear ruthenium(II) complexes bridged by polyaromatic (biphenyl, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) alkynyl ligands. Longitudinal expansion of the π-conjugated polyaromatic core of the bridging ligands caused a reduced potential difference between the anodic steps and reinforced their bridge-localized nature, as evidenced by UV/vis/near-IR and IR spectroelectrochemical data combined with DFT and TDDFT calculations. Importantly, the intricate multiple IR ν(CC) absorption bands for the singly oxidized states imply a thermal population of a range of conformers (rotamers) with distinct electronic character. This behavior was demonstrated with more accurate DFT calculations of selected nontruncated 1e− oxidized complexes in three different conformations. The combined experimental and theoretical data reveal that thermally populated rotamers featuring various mutual orientations of the ligated metal termini and the bridging diethynyl polyaromatic moieties have a significant impact on the electronic absorption and ν(CC) wavenumbers of the singly oxidized systems.

Although the amine sulfur dioxide chemistry was well characterized in the past both experimentally and theoretically, no systematic Raman spectroscopic study describes the interaction between N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)). The formation of a deep red oil by the reaction of SO(2) with DMA is an evidence of the charge transfer (CT) nature of the DMA-SO(2) interaction. The DMA -SO(2) normal Raman spectrum shows the appearance of two intense bands at 1110 and 1151 cm(-1), which are enhanced when resonance is approached. These bands are assigned to nu(s)(SO(2)) and nu(phi-N) vibrational modes, respectively, confirming the interaction between SO(2) and the amine via the nitrogen atom. The dimethyl group steric effect favors the interaction of SO(2) with the ring pi electrons, which gives rise to a pi-pi* low-energy CT electronic transition, as confirmed by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. In addition, the calculated Raman DMA-SO(2) spectrum at the B3LYP/6-311++g(3df,3pd) level shows good agreement with the experimental results (vibrational wavenumbers and relative intensities), allowing a complete assignment of the vibrational modes. A better understanding of the intermolecular interactions in this model system can be extremely useful in designing new materials to absorb, detect, or even quantify SO(2). A new inherently chiral calix[4]arene ICC 1 has been disclosed. The dissymmetry of 1 is generated from a chirality plane in the quinol moiety of a 1,3-bridged bicyclic calix[4]arene. ICC 1 has been resolved by enantioselective HPLC, and the chiroptical properties of both isolated antipodes (pS)-1 and (pR)-1 confirm their enantiomeric nature. The absolute configuration of the (pS)-1/(pR)-1 enantiomeric pair was established through time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of electronic circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The synthesis of two new inherently chiral calix[4]arenes (ICCs, 1 and 2), endowed with electron-rich concave surfaces, has been achieved through the desymmetrization of a lower rim distal-bridged oxacyclophane (OCP) macrocycle. The new highly emissive ICCs were resolved by chiral HPLC, and the enantiomeric nature of the isolated antipodes proved by electronic circular dichroism (CD). Using time-dependent density functional calculations of CD spectra, their absolute configurations were established. NMR studies with (S)-Pirkle's alcohol unequivocally showed that the host-guest interactions occur in the chiral pocket comprehending the calix-OCP exo cavities and the carbazole moieties.

A series of mono(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)metal-(II) complexes with nitro-substituted thienyl acetylide ligands of general formula [M(eta(5)-C5H5)(L)(C C{C4H2S}(n)NO2)] (M = Fe, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, n = 1,2; M = Ru, L = kappa(2)-DPPE, 2 PPh3, n = 1, 2; M = Ni, L = PPh3, n = 1, 2) has been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of the complexes was explored by cyclic voltammetry. Quadratic hyperpolarizabilities (beta) of the complexes have been determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements at 1500 nm. The effect of donor abilities of different organometallic fragments on the quadratic hyperpolarizabilities was studied and correlated with spectroscopic and electrochemical data. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations were employed to get a better understanding of the second-order nonlinear optical properties in these complexes. In this series, the complexity of the push pull systems is revealed; even so, several trends in the second-order hyperpolarizability can still be recognized. In particular, the overall data seem to indicate that the existence of other electronic transitions in addition to the main MLCT clearly controls the effectiveness of the organometallic donor ability on the second-order NLO properties of these push pull systems.

Novel bis(azidophenyl)phosphole sulfide building block 8 has been developed to give access to a plethora of phosphole-containing π-conjugated systems in a simple synthetic step. This was explored for the reaction of the two azido moieties with phenyl-, pyridyl- and thienylacetylenes, to give bis(aryltriazolyl)-extended π-systems, having either the phosphole sulfide (9) or the phosphole (10) group as central ring. These conjugated frameworks exhibit intriguing photophysical and electrochemical properties that vary with the nature of the aromatic end-group. The λ3-phospholes 10 display blue fluorescence (λem = 460–469 nm) with high quan-tum yield (ΦF = 0.134–0.309). The radical anion of pyridylsubstituted phosphole sulfide 9b was observed with UV/Vis spectroscopy. TDDFT calculations on the extended π-systems showed some variation in the shape of the HOMOs, which was found to have an effect on the extent of charge transfer, depending on the aromatic end-group. Some fine-tuning of the emission maxima was observed, albeit subtle, showing a decrease in conjugation in the order thienyl phenyl pyridyl. These results show that variations in the distal ends of such π-systems have a subtle but significant effect on photophysical properties.

Four new diruthenium complexes [{(η5-C5Me5)Ru(dppe)}2(μ-CuC–L–CuC)] featuring different bridging isomeric diethynyl benzodithiophenes viz. L = benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b’]dithiophene (complex 1), benzo[2,1-b;4,5b’]dithiophene (complex 2), benzo[1,2-b;3,4-b’]dithiophene (complex 3) and benzo[1,2-b;4,3-b’]-dithiophene (complex 4), were synthesized and characterized by molecular spectroscopic and crystallographicmethods. The subtle changes in the molecular structure introduced by the diethynyl benzodithiophene isomers have a notable impact on the stability of the oxidized complexes and their absorption characteristics in the visible-NIR and IR spectral domains. Electronic properties of stable oxidized complexes[1]n+ and [4]n+ (n = 1, 2) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR and IR spectroelectrochemistry as well as DFT and TDDFT calculations. The results document the largely bridgelocalized character of the oxidation of parents 1 and 4. Cations [2]+ and [3]+ are too unstable at ambient temperature to afford their unambiguous characterization. UV-vis-NIR absorption spectral data combined with TDDFT calculations (BLYP35) reveal that the broad electronic absorption of [1]+ and [4]+ in the NIR region has a mixed intraligand π–π* and MLCT character, with similar contribution from their spin-delocalized trans and cis conformers. A spin-localized (mixed-valence) rotamer was only observed for [1]+ at ambient temperature as a minor component on the time scale of IR spectroscopy.

Solvatochromic and ionochromic effects of the iron(II)bis(1,10-phenanthroline)dicyano (Fe(phen)(2)(CN)(2)) complex were investigated by means of combined DFT/TDDFT calculations using the PBE and B3LYP functionals. Extended solvation models of Fe(phen)(2)(CN)(2) in acetonitrile and aqueous solution, as well as including interaction with Mg(2+), were constructed. The calculated vertical excitation energies reproduce well the observed solvatochromism in acetonitrile and aqueous solutions, the ionochromism in acetonitrile in the presence of Mg(2+), and the absence of ionochromic effect in aqueous solution. The vertical excitation energies and the nature of the transitions were reliably predicted after inclusion of geometry relaxation upon aqueous micro- and global solvation and solvent polarization effect in the TDDFT calculations. The two intense UV-vis absorption bands occurring for all systems studied are interpreted as transitions from a hybrid Fe(II)(d)/cyano N(p) orbital to a phenanthroline pi* orbital rather than a pure metal-to-ligand-charge transfer (MLCT). The solvatochromic and ionochromic blue band shifts of Fe(phen)(2)(CN)(2) were explained with preferential stabilization of the highest occupied Fe(II)(d)/cyano N(p) orbitals as a result of specific interactions with water solvent molecules or Mg(2+) ions in solution. Such interactions occur through the CN(-) groups in the complex, and they have a decisive role for the observed blue shifts of UV-vis absorption bands.

1,2,4,5-Tetrazines are six-membered heterocyclic compounds in which the four nitrogen atoms are displayed in a symmetric fashion. Their reactivity is quite different from other heterocyclic aromatic systems due to its unique electron-withdrawing character, comparable to tetra-nitrobenzene. 1 In particular, 1,2,4,5- tetrazines are known to take part in [4+2] inverse-Diels–Alder cycloaddition processes which efficiently lead to the construction of substituted pyridazine systems that are important in drug development and biomarker applications. 2 However, the electronic character of 1,2,4,5-tetrazines hampered the development of 3- ethynyl- and 3,6-diethynyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine derivatives for molecular electronic applications, proved by the scarcity of examples found in the literature. 3 Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of two novel ethynyl-based 1,2,4,5-tetrazine derivatives. Synthesis of 3,6-(4-bromophenyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine precursor (1) was achieved in good yield by Pinner’s method, starting from 4-bromobenzonitrile. Despite its low solubility in common organic solvents, this precursor was found to react smoothly under typical Sonogashira coupling conditions to selectively afford the 3-ethynyl (2) and 3,6-diethynyl (3) protected derivatives (Figure 1). Reaction conditions were evaluated in order to provide the best yields and to promote selectivity of the mono- or disubstituted ethynyl derivatives. Finally, deprotection was achieved affording, in the case of compound 3, an unprecedented 3,6- diethynyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine compound. Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations for both deprotected ethynyl derivatives were used to simulate electronic spectra. A deep knowledge of the relevant electronic transitions involved and quantitatively satisfactory results of the calculated electronic excitations in comparison with experimental data were obtained.

Rhodamine B (RB) has been successfully exploited in the synthesis of light harvesting systems, but since RB is prone to form dimers acting as quenchers for the fluorescence, high energy transfer efficiencies can be reached only when using bulky and hydrophobic counterions acting as spacers between RBs. In this PhD thesis, a multiscale theoretical study aimed at providing insights into the structural, photophysical and optical properties of RB and its aggregates is presented. At the macroscopic level (no atomistic details) a phenomenological model describing the fluorescence decay of RB networks in presence of both quenching from dimers and exciton-exciton annihiliation is presented and analysed, showing that the quenching from dimers affects the decay only at long times, a feature that can be exploited in global fitting analysis to determine relevant chemical and photophysical information. At the mesoscopic level (atomistic details but no electronic structure) the RB aggregation in water in presence of different counterions is studied with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A new force field has been parametrized for describing the RB flexibility and the RB-RB interaction driving the dimerization. Simulations correctly predict the RB/counterion aggregation only in presence of bulky and hydrophobic counterion and its ability to prevent the dimerization. Finally, at the microscopic level, DFT calculations are performed to demonstrate the spacing action of bulky counterions, but standard TDDFT calculations are showed to fail in correctly describing the excited states of RB and its dimers. Moreover, also standard procedures proposed in literature for obtaining ad hoc functionals are showed to not work properly. A detailed analysis on the effect of the exact exchange shows that its short-range contribution is the crucial quantity for ameliorating results, and a new functional containing a proper amount of such an exchange is proposed and successfully tested.

Previous analysis of the ECD spectra of two prenylated benzopyrans isolated from Peperomia obtusifolia, by means of the helicity rule for the chromane chromophore, resulted in the incorrect assignment of their absolute configuration, (5) instead of (R) for a deduced P-helicity of the chromane ring for the (+)-enantiomers. This was discovered by the application of DFT calculations and VCD spectroscopy. Experimental and calculated (B3LYP/6-31G(d)) VCD and IR spectra were compared, and a definitive absolute configuration of (+)-1 and (+)-2 is reassigned directly in solution as (R). The assumption of equatorial positioning of bulky groups, shown here to be invalid for the title molecules, is the underlying cause of the previous incorrect assignment of absolute configuration. Moreover, TDDFT (B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d)) calculations of ECD spectra have shown that both P- and M-helicity of the heterocyclic ring, for a given absolute configuration, lead to the same sign for the (1)L(b) ECD band, thus bringing into question the validity of the empirical ECD helicity rule for chromane molecules. Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is currently a promising technology that makes solar energy efficient and cost-effective to harness. In DSSC, metal free dyes, such indoline-containing D149 and D205, are proved to be potential alternatives for traditional metal organic dyes. In this work, a DFT/TDDFT characterization for D149 and D205 were carried out using different functionals, including B3LYP, MPW1K, CAM-B3LYP and PBE0. Three different conformers for D149 and four different conformers for D205 were identified and calculated in vacuum. The performance of different functionals on calculating the maximum absorbance of the dyes in vacuum and five common solvents (acetonitrile, chloroform, ethanol, methanol, and THF) were examined and compared to determine the suitable computational setting for predicting properties of these two dyes. Furthermore, deprotonated D149 and D205 in solvents were also considered, and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) were calculated, which elucidates the substitution effect on the rhodanine ring of D149 and D205 dyes on their efficiency. Finally, D149 and D205 molecules were confirmed to be firmly anchored on ZnO surface by periodic DFT calculations. These results would shed light on the design of new highly efficiency metal-free dyes.
