Face à atual crise económica, cada vez mais as empresas procuram ganhar vantagens competitivas através da implementação da sua melhoria contínua. Uma das vertentes deste processo consiste na melhoria da gestão de stocks. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo o desenvolvimento de um projeto que visa a melhoria do sistema de gestão de stocks da FUTE – Fábrica de Utilidades de Tubo, SA. A principal motivação para o desenvolvimento deste trabalho teve como base as lacunas e falhas constatadas num departamento que é crítico para o desenvolvimento de todo o processo produtivo. O trabalho envolveu a utilização de modelos de gestão de stocks o que fez com que, através de cálculos efetuados, diminuísse o risco de rutura de materiais. Além disso, envolveu as várias etapas da técnica dos 5S’s, bem como a Gestão Visual garantindo, assim, os locais arrumados, limpos, seguros e devidamente identificados. Estas técnicas foram aplicadas em diferentes locais da empresa e, após essa implementação, verificou-se, por parte dos trabalhadores, uma redução de tempos no que toca à procura e identificação de materiais necessários para a linha de montagem. Essa redução de tempos foi também sentida por parte do responsável pelos stocks pois, com estas alterações, os materiais ficam mais acessíveis e mais fáceis de identificar aquando da sua verificação. Os resultados alcançados traduziram-se num aumento dos níveis de produtividade e qualidade, bem como um aumento da satisfação dos trabalhadores, que se traduz numa alteração de mentalidades e comportamentos.

A Comparison of the Management Models of Protected Areas between China and the African South Region allows reading and evaluating the similarities and differences in the use of management model as a management tool for protected areas in China and South African Region. Specifically, some positive and negative features of the management approaches for the two regions. Secondary data was collected from various related literature such as policy documents, students‟ dissertations/thesis, scientific articles and magazines. Based on the method above, the study found out that China's first nature reserve was the Dingus Mountain Nature Reserve in Zhaoqing, Guangdong province established in 1956. By the end of 2005, about 2,349 nature reserves of various kinds were set up throughout the country, covering a total area of 149.95 million ha and accounting for 15 percent of the total land territory. The study further found that Southern Africa has approximately 4,390 protected areas out of 11487920 total land areas and Eastern Africa has approximately 1838144 protected areas, which is equivalent to 15.0% of the total land areas. South Africa in this region had its first declared natural park in 1926 after Paul Kruger (a war hero) had alerted the authorities of the extinguishing threat of some animal species of region.

The use of private funding and management is enjoying an increasing trend in airports. The literature has not paid enough attention to the mixed management models in this industry, although many European airports take the form of mixed public-private companies, where ownership is shared between public and private sectors. We examine the determinants of the degree of private participation in the European airport sector. Drawing on a sample of the 100 largest European airports, we estimate a multivariate equation in order to determine the role of airport characteristics, fiscal variables, and political factors on the extent of private involvement. Our results confirm the alignment between public and private interests in partially privatized airports. Fiscal constraints and market attractiveness promote private participation. Integrated governance models and the share of network carriers prevent the presence of private ownership, while the degree of private participation appears to be pragmatic rather than ideological.

The study presents the results and recommendations deriving from the application of two supply chain management analysis models as proposed by the Supply Chain Council (SCOR, version 10.0) and by Lambert (1997, Framework for Supply Chain Management) on the logistics of cash transfers in Brazil. Cash transfers consist of the transportation of notes to and from each node of the complex network formed by the bank branches, ATMs, armored transportation providers, the government custodian, Brazilian Central Bank and financial institutions. Although the logistic to sustain these operations is so wide-ranged (country-size), complex and subject to a lot of financial regulations and security procedures, it has been detected that it was probably not fully integrated. Through the use of a primary and a secondary data research and analysis, using the above mentioned models, the study ends up with propositions to strongly improve the operations efficiency

During the past years, the industry has shifted position and moved towards “the luxury universe” whose customers are demanding, treating individuals as unique and valued customer for the business, offering vehicles produced with the state of the art technologies and implementing the highest finishing standards. Due to the competitive level in the market, car makers enable processes which equalizes customer services to E.R. management, being dealt with the maximum urgency that allows the comparison between both, car workshops and emergency rooms, where workshop bays or ramps will be equal to emergency boxes and skilled technicians are equivalent to the health care specialist, who will carry out tests and checks prior to afford any final operation, keeping the “patient” under control before it is back to normal utilization. This paper establishes a valid model for the automotive industry to estimate customer service demand forecasting under variable demand conditions using analogies with patient demand models used for the medical ER.

The starting point of the project was the observation that strategic management is absent in small businesses. The first objective of the project was to examine the reasons causing this situation in Greece, the second one, to examine the appropriateness of the contemporary models of strategic planning for the Greek S.M.E.s, and the third to examine the appropriateness of the alternative approaches to strategic management for the Greek S.M.E.s. The term appropriateness includes (a) the ability of managers to use the models and (b) the ability of the models to assist the managers. The results of the research indicate that none of the two above conditions exists, hence, it is suggested that the contemporary models of strategic management are inappropriate for the Greek S.M.E.s. Many previous research projects on the topic suggest that since the strategic decision making process in S.M.E.s is informal, the whole process is absent or ineffective. Current trends in S.M.E.s' strategic management do not consider the informality of the strategic decision making process as a kind of managerial illness, but as a managerial characteristic. The use of sophisticated data collection and analytical methods does not indicate successful strategic decisions, but it indicates the method large firms use to manage their strategy. According to the literature review, the S.M.E.s' managers avoid the use of the contemporary models of strategic management, because they do not have the knowledge, the resources or the time. Another thesis, expressed by some firms' specialists, suggests that small firms are different from large ones, hence their practice of strategic management should not follow the large firm's prototypes.

A gestão de stocks tem-se tornado uma ferramenta fundamental na racionalização de custos das empresas permitindo uma maior eficiência operacional. Os modelos de gestão de stocks procuram ajudar a determinar as quantidades a encomendar e quando encomendar, com um custo total de aprovisionamento mínimo. Este trabalho visa o estudo da gestão de stocks, dos modelos existentes e a aplicação de um deles num prestador de saúde, em particular, na área da imagiologia. Neste estudo optou-se por efectuar a classificação ABC dos produtos e posteriormente procurou-se definir o modelo de gestão de stocks que melhor se adeqúe à realidade empresarial em estudo de modo a manter o nível de stock correcto associado a um menor custo. Optou-se pelo modelo de revisão periódica de stocks que permite efectuar a encomenda sempre com o mesmo intervalo de tempo e efectuar ajustes nas quantidades necessárias. Com base nos dados fornecido efectuou-se uma previsão da procura e assim definiram-se as quantidades a encomendar, bem como o stock de segurança necessário. Implementaram-se as quantidades e o stock de segurança e efectuou-se uma avaliação dos resultados obtidos e analisou-se o impacto da gestão de stocks no prestador de saúde.

Case management models evolved as the mental health care system shifted hospital to community settings. The research evidence underscores the efficacy of certain case management models under 'ideal' conditions; what is less clear, is how these models perform in day to day clinical practice. Moreover, the economic perspective adopted by most studies is relatively narrow thus limiting a proper understanding of the costs and benefits of such models.
