Erbium-doped silica glasses were made by sol-gel process. Intensive photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the Er-doped silica glasses at room temperature were measured. A broadband peak at 1535 ma, corresponding to the I-4(13/2)-I-4(15/2) transition, its full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 10 nm, and a shoulder at 1546 nm in the PL spectra were observed. At lower temperatures, main line of 1535 nm and another line of 1552 Mn instead of 1546 nm appear. So two types of luminescence centers must exist in the samples at different temperature. The intensity of main line does not decrease obviously with increasing temperature. By varying the Er ion concentration in the range of 0.2 wt% - 5wt%, the highest photoluminescence intensity was obtained at 0.2wt% erbium doped concentration. Luminescence intensity decreases with increasing erbium concentration. Cooperative upconversion was used to explain the concentration quenching of luminescence from silica glass with high erbium concentration. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements were carried out. It was found that the majority of the erbium impurities in the glasses have a local structure of eight first neighbor oxygen atoms at a mean distance of 0.255 nm, which is consistent with the typical coordination structure of rare earth ion.

The absorption and luminescence spectra for the poly(p-phenylene vinylene)/sol-gel silica with different thermal treatments were measured. A considerable increase in the luminescence was observed for the polymer introduced into SiO2 matrix with thermal treatment at 120 degreesC. The thermal diffusivity of these samples was measured using the thermal lens technique, and the obtained value 3.3 x 10(-5) cm(2)/s (sample treated at 37 degreesC) is practically independent of the thermal treatment (37-150 degreesC). Aware of the difficulties in applying sol-gel technology on the preparation of thin films suitable for optical devices, the present paper reports on the preparation of crack-free erbium- and ytterbium-doped silica: hafnia thick films onto silica on silicon. The film was obtained using a dispersion of silica-hafnia nanoparticles into a binder solution, spin-coating, regular thermal process and rapid thermal process. The used methodology has allowed a significant increase of the film thickness. Based on the presented results good optical-quality films with the required thickness for a fiber matching single mode waveguide were obtained using the erbium- and ytterbium-activated sol-gel silica:hafnia system. The prepared film supports two transversal electric modes at 1550 nm and the difference between the transversal electric mode and the transversal magnetic mode is very small, indicating low birefringence. Photoluminescence of the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition of erbium ions shows a broad band centered at 1.53 mu m with full width at a half maximum of 28 nm. Up-conversion emission was carried out under different pump laser powers, and just one transition at red region was observed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electroassisted encapsulation of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes was performed into silica matrices (SWCNT@SiO2). This material was used as the host for the potentiostatic growth of polyaniline (PANI) to yield a hybrid nanocomposite electrode, which was then characterized by both electrochemical and imaging techniques. The electrochemical properties of the SWCNT@SiO2-PANI composite material were tested against inorganic (Fe3+/Fe2+) and organic (dopamine) redox probes. It was observed that the electron transfer constants for the electrochemical reactions increased significantly when a dispersion of either SWCNT or PANI was carried out inside of the SiO2 matrix. However, the best results were obtained when polyaniline was grown through the pores of the SWCNT@SiO2 material. The enhanced reversibility of the redox reactions was ascribed to the synergy between the two electrocatalytic components (SWCNTs and PANI) of the composite material.

Aliquat 336, a liquid hydrophobic material, was used at different concentrations (0.5-3.0%, w/v) as an additive in the preparation of encapsulated lipase from Bacillus sp. ITP-001 on sol-gel silica matrices using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as the precursor. The resulting hydrophobic matrices and immobilized lipases were characterized with regard to specific surface area (BET method), adsorption-desorption isotherms, pore volume (Vp) and size (dp) by nitrogen adsorption (BJH method) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The catalytic activities and the corresponding coupling yields were assayed in the hydrolysis of olive oil. In comparison with pure silica matrices, the immobilization process in the presence of Aliquat 336 decreased the values for specific surface area and increased the values for pore specific volume (Vp) and mean pore diameter (dp). This behavior may be related to the partial adsorption of the enzyme on the external surface of the hydrophobic matrix as indicated by scanning electron microscopy. Aliquat 336 concentrations in the range from 0.5 to 1.5% (w/v) provided immobilized derivatives with higher coupling yields and better substrate affinity. The highest coupling yield (Y-A = 71%) was obtained for the immobilized enzyme prepared in the presence of 1.5% Aliquat which gave the following morphological properties: specific surface area = 183 m(2)/g, pore specific volume (Vp) = 0.36 cc/g and mean pore diameter (dp)= 91 angstrom. The deposition and coating of GdVO4: Eu3+ nanoparticles on spherical silica was carried out using a simple sol - gel method at low temperature. The GdVO4: Eu3+-coated silica composites obtained were characterized by differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence spectra, and kinetic decay. It is found that the similar to 5 nm GdVO4: Eu3+ nanoparticles coating the silica spheres are crystal in the as-prepared samples and the crystallinity increases with increasing annealing temperature. The composites obtained are spherical in shape with an average size of 100 nm. The GdVO4: Eu3+ nanoparticles are linked with silica cores by a chemical bond. The photoluminescence spectra of the obtained GdVO4: Eu3+-coated silica composites are similar to those of the bulk GdVO4: Eu3+ phosphors. The strongest peak is near 617 nm, which indicates that Eu3+ is located in the low symmetry site with non-inversion centre.

Plasticized poly(L-lactide)-silica nanocomposite materials have been successfully synthesized by sol-gel process. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by infrared spectra (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), Tensile testing and scanning electron microscope (SEM). IR measurements show that vibration of C-O-C group is confined by silica network. Also the crystallization of poly (L-lactide) is partly confined by silica network. The presence of even small amount of silica largely improves the tensile strength of the samples, TGA results reveal that the thermal stability of samples is improved with silica loading.

Silica-gel nanowire/Na+-montmorillonite (Na+-MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by the in situ sol-gel process of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of Na+-MMT and ammonia as catalyst. Microstructure characterization of the nanocomposites was done by SEM, , EDX, XRD and FTIR. It was found that a lot of silica-gel nanowires grew along the edges of Na+-MMT. The combination between the nanowires and Na+-MMT was accomplished via polycondensation of the hydrolyzed TEOS and the edge-OH groups of Na+-MMT.

The synthesis and luminescence properties of Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphor layers on spherical silica spheres,i.e.,a kind of core-shell complex phosphor,Zn2SiO4:Mn@SiO2 were described.Firstly, monodisperse silica spheres were obtained via the Stober method by the hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)Si(OC2H5)4 under base condition (using NH4OH as the catalyst).Secondly, the silica spheres were coated with a Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphor layer by a Pechini sol-gel process.X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum(EDS) and photoluminescence(PL) were employed to characterize the resulting complex phosphor. The results comfirm that 1000℃ annealed sample consists of crystalline Zn2SiO4:Mn shells and amorphous SiO2 cores. The phosphor show the green emission of Mn2+ at 521nm corresponding 4T1(4G)-6A1(6S) transition, and the possible luminescence mechanism is proposed.
