Auditory spatial functions, including the ability to discriminate between the positions of nearby sound sources, are subserved by a large temporo-parieto-frontal network. With the aim of determining whether and when the parietal contribution is critical for auditory spatial discrimination, we applied single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation on the right parietal cortex 20, 80, 90 and 150 ms post-stimulus onset while participants completed a two-alternative forced choice auditory spatial discrimination task in the left or right hemispace. Our results reveal that transient TMS disruption of right parietal activity impairs spatial discrimination when applied at 20 ms post-stimulus onset for sounds presented in the left (controlateral) hemispace and at 80 ms for sounds presented in the right hemispace. We interpret our finding in terms of a critical role for controlateral temporo-parietal cortices over initial stages of the building-up of auditory spatial representation and for a right hemispheric specialization in integrating the whole auditory space over subsequent, higher-order processing stages.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation on the triggering of saccades. The right frontal eye field was stimulated during modified gap and overlap paradigms with flashed presentation of the lateral visual target of 80 ms. In order to examine possible facilitating or inhibitory effects on saccade triggering, three different time intervals of stimulation were chosen, i.e. simultaneously with onset of the target, during the presentation and after target end. Stimulation applied simultaneously with target onset significantly decreased the latency of contralateral saccades in the gap but not in the overlap paradigm. Stimulation after target end significantly increased saccade latency for both sides in the gap paradigm and for the contralateral side in the overlap paradigm. Stimulation during presentation had no effect in either paradigm. The results show that, depending on the time interval and the paradigm tested, a facilitation or inhibition of saccade triggering can be achieved. The results are discussed in a context of two probable transcranial magnetic stimulation effects, a direct interference with the frontal eye field on the one hand and a remote interference with the superior colliculus on the other hand.

A comprehensive model of processes involved in femtosecond laser inscription and the subsequent structural material modification is developed. Different time scales of the pulse-plasma dynamics and thermo-mechanical relaxation allow for separate numerical treatments of these processes, while linking them by an energy transfer equation. The model is illustrated and analysed on examples of inscription in fused silica and the results are used to explain previous experimental observations. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

We show experimentally and numerically new transient lasing regime between stable single-pulse generation and noise-like generation. We characterize qualitatively all three regimes of single pulse generation per round-trip of all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers mode-locked due to effect of nonlinear polarization evolution. We study spectral and temporal features of pulses produced in all three regimes as well as compressibility of such pulses. Simple criteria are proposed to identify lasing regime in experiment. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

The use, manipulation and application of electrical currents, as a controlled interference mechanism in the human body system, is currently a strong source of motivation to researchers in areas such as clinical, sports, neuroscience, amongst others. In electrical stimulation (ES), the current applied to tissue is traditionally controlled concerning stimulation amplitude, frequency and pulse-width. The main drawbacks of the transcutaneous ES are the rapid fatigue induction and the high discomfort induced by the non-selective activation of nervous fibers. There are, however, electrophysiological parameters whose response, like the response to different stimulation waveforms, polarity or a personalized charge control, is still unknown. The study of the following questions is of great importance: What is the physiological effect of the electric pulse parametrization concerning charge, waveform and polarity? Does the effect change with the clinical condition of the subjects? The parametrization influence on muscle recruitment can retard fatigue onset? Can parametrization enable fiber selectivity, optimizing the motor fibers recruitment rather than the nervous fibers, reducing contraction discomfort? Current hardware solutions lack flexibility at the level of stimulation control and physiological response assessment. To answer these questions, a miniaturized, portable and wireless controlled device with ES functions and full integration with a generic biosignals acquisition platform has been created. Hardware was also developed to provide complete freedom for controlling the applied current with respect to the waveform, polarity, frequency, amplitude, pulse-width and duration. The impact of the methodologies developed is successfully applied and evaluated in the contexts of fundamental electrophysiology, psycho-motor rehabilitation and neuromuscular disorders diagnosis. This PhD project was carried out in the Physics Department of Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT-UNL), in straight collaboration with PLUX - Wireless Biosignals S.A. company and co-funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology.

The propagation of pulse waves in coplanar waveguides (CPWs) is investigated, and these CPWs are assumed to be fabricated on a single -layer low- temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrate. The input pulse wave can be a Gaussian pulse or a sinusoldally modulated Gaussian pulse. Based on the standard Galerkin 's method in the spectral domain, combined with fast Fourier transform (FFT), the pulse waveform and delay in CPWs are demonstrated and compared for a second plate, oriented orthogonally to the primary planar element, thus producing a crossed planar monopole (CPM), which is simpler to produce and has lower cost than a conical monopole. In this paper, further measurements have been made on this element

We propose a method for measuring hyper-Rayleigh scattering employing pulse trains produced by a Q-switched and mode-locked Nd:YAG laser. The use of the entire pulse train under the Q-switch envelope avoids the need of any device to scan the irradiance, as is usually done with nanosecond and femtosecond single-pulse lasers. To verify the feasibility of the technique, we performed measurements in different solutions of para-nitroaniline and compared the results with those obtained with nanosecond pulses. In both cases, the agreement with the hyperpolarizability values reported in the literature is about the same, but the measurements carried out with pulse trains are at least 20 times faster. Besides the advantage of acquisition speed, the use of pulse trains also allows the instantaneous inspection of slow luminescence contributions arising from multiphoton absorption. It is important to have better evaluation and understanding of the motor neuron physiology, with the goal to early and objectively diagnose and treat patients with neurodegenerative pathologies. The Compound Muscle Action Potential (CMAP) scan is a non-invasive diagnosis technique for neurodegenerative pathologies, such as ALS, and enables a quick analysis of the muscle action potentials in response to motor nerve stimulation. This work aims to study the influence of different pulse modulated waveforms in peripheral nerve excitability by CMAP scan technique on healthy subjects. A total of 13 healthy subjects were submitted to the same test. The stimuli were applied in the medium nerve on the right wrist and electromyography signal collected on the Abductor Pollicis Brevis (APB) muscle surface on the right thumb. Stimulation was performed with an increasing intensities range from 4 to 30 mA, with varying steps, 3 stimuli per step. The procedure was repeated 4 times per subject, each repetition using a different single pulse stimulation waveform: monophasic square, monophasic triangular, monophasic quadratic and biphasic square. Results were retrieved from the averaging of the stimuli on each current intensity step. The square pulse needs less current intensity to generate the same response amplitude regarding the other waves and presents a more steep curve slope and this effect is gradually decreasing for the triangular and quadratic pulse, respectively, being the difference even more evident regarding the biphasic pulse. The control of the waveform stimulation pulse allows varying the stimulusresponse curve slope.

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a surrogate of arterial stiffness and represents a non-invasive marker of cardiovascular risk. The non-invasive measurement of PWV requires tracking the arrival time of pressure pulses recorded in vivo, commonly referred to as pulse arrival time (PAT). In the state of the art, PAT is estimated by identifying a characteristic point of the pressure pulse waveform. This paper demonstrates that for ambulatory scenarios, where signal-to-noise ratios are below 10 dB, the performance in terms of repeatability of PAT measurements through characteristic points identification degrades drastically. Hence, we introduce a novel family of PAT estimators based on the parametric modeling of the anacrotic phase of a pressure pulse. In particular, we propose a parametric PAT estimator (TANH) that depicts high correlation with the Complior(R) characteristic point D1 (CC = 0.99), increases noise robustness and reduces by a five-fold factor the number of heartbeats required to obtain reliable PAT measurements.

It is shown that spatially selective inversion and saturation can be achieved by concatenation of RF pulses with lower flip angles. A concatenation rule which enables global doubling of the flip angle of any given excitation pulse applied to initial z magnetization is proposed. In this fashion, the selectivity of the single pulse is preserved, making the high selectivity achievable in the low flip-angle regime available for inversion and large flip-angle saturation purposes. The profile quality achievable with exemplary concatenated pulses is investigated in comparison with adiabatic inversion. It is verified that by using concatenated inversion in the transfer insensitive labeling technique (TILT), the MT artifact is suppressed. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

Isolated neutron stars (NSs) show a bewildering variety of astrophysical manifestations, presumably shaped by the magnetic field strength and topology at birth. Here, using state-of-the-art calculations of the coupled magnetic and thermal evolution of NSs, we compute the thermal spectra and pulse profiles expected for a variety of initial magnetic field configurations. In particular, we contrast models with purely poloidal magnetic fields to models dominated by a strong internal toroidal component. We find that, while the former displays double-peaked profiles and very low pulsed fractions, in the latter, the anisotropy in the surface temperature produced by the toroidal field often results in a single pulse profile, with pulsed fractions that can exceed the 50–60 per cent level even for perfectly isotropic local emission. We further use our theoretical results to generate simulated ‘observed’ spectra, and show that blackbody (BB) fits result in inferred radii that can be significantly smaller than the actual NS radius, even as low as ∼1–2 km for old NSs with strong internal toroidal fields and a high absorption column density along their line of sight. We compute the size of the inferred BB radius for a few representative magnetic field configurations, NS ages and magnitudes of the column density. Our theoretical results are of direct relevance to the interpretation of X-ray observations of isolated NSs, as well as to the constraints on the equation of state of dense matter through radius measurements.

We propose an all-fiber method for the generation of ultrafast shaped pulse train bursts from a single pulse based on Fourier Series Developments (FDSs). The implementation of the FSD based filter only requires the use of a very simple non apodized Superimposed Fiber Bragg Grating (S-FBG) for the generation of the Shaped Output Pulse Train Burst (SOPTB). In this approach, the shape, the period and the temporal length of the generated SOPTB have no dependency on the input pulse rate.

A self-starting all-fiber passively mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear loop mirror (NOLM) is demonstrated. Stable soliton pulses centered at 2017.33 nm with 1.56 nm FWHM were produced at a repetition rate of 1.514 MHz with pulse duration of 2.8 ps and pulse energy of 83.8 pJ. As increased pump power, the oscillator can also operate at noise-like (NL) regime. Stable NL pulses with coherence spike width of 341 fs and pulse energy of up to 249.32 nJ was achieved at a center wavelength of 2017.24 nm with 21.33 nm FWHM. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 2 μm region NOLM-based mode-locked fiber laser operating at two regimes with the highest single pulse energy for NL pulses. © 2014 Optical Society of America.
