Self-organized Bi lines that are only 1.5 nm wide can be grown without kinks or breaks on Si(0 0 1) surfaces to lengths of up to 500 nm. Constant-current topographical images of the lines, obtained with the scanning tunneling microscope, have a striking bias dependence. Although the lines appear darker than the Si terraces at biases below ≈∣1.2∣ V, the contrast reverses at biases above ≈∣1.5∣ V. Between these two ranges the lines and terraces are of comparable brightness. It has been suggested that this bias dependence may be due to the presence of a semiconductor-like energy gap within the line. Using ab initio calculations it is demonstrated that the energy gap is too small to explain the experimentally observed bias dependence. Consequently, at this time, there is no compelling explanation for this phenomenon. An alternative explanation is proposed that arises naturally from calculations of the tunneling current, using the Tersoff–Hamann approximation, and an examination of the electronic structure of the line.

Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has been employed to monitor surface conductivity changes in YBa2Cu3O7 as a function of temperature. Concomitant use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) establishes that the formation of oxygen dimers with lowering of temperature is accompanied by a simultaneous increase of surface conductivity.

An optical diagnostic system consisting of the Michelson interferometer with the image processor has been developed for studying of the surface wave in the thermal capillary convection in a rectangular cavity. In this paper, the capillary convection, surface deformation and surface wave due to the different temperature between the two sidewalls have been investigated. The cavity is 52mm?42mm in horizontal cross section and 4mm in height. The temperature difference is increased gradually and flow in liquid layer will change from steady convection to unstable convection. The optical interference method measures the surface deformation and the surface wave of the convection. The deformation of the interference fringes, which produced by the meeting of the reflected light from the liquid surface and the reference light has been captured, and the surface deformation appears when the steady convection is developed. The surface deformation is enhanced with the increasing of the temperature difference, and then several knaggy peeks in the interference fringes appear and move from the heated side to the cooled side, it demonstrates that the surface wave is existed. The surface deformation, the wavelength, the frequency, and the wave amplitude of the surface wave have been calculated.

Surface tension induced flow is implemented into a numerical modelling framework and validated for a number of test cases. Finite volume unstructured mesh techniques are used to discretize the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations in three dimensions. An explicit approach is used to include the effect of surface tension forces on the flow profile and final shape of a liquid domain. Validation of this approach is made against both analytical and experimental data. Finally, the method is used to model the wetting balance test for solder alloy material, where model predictions are used to gain a greater insight into this process. In this work we employ the state-of-the-art pseudopotential method, within a generalized gradient approximation to the density functional theory, combined with a recently developed method for the calculation of HREELS spectra to study a series of different proposed models for carbon incorporation on the silicon (001) surface. A fully discussion on the geometry, energetics and specially the comparison between experimental and theoretical STM images and electron energy loss spectra indicate that the Si(100)-c(4 x 4) is probably induced by Si-C surface dinners, in agreement with recent experimental findings. Thin solid films of bis benzimidazo perylene (AzoPTCD) were fabricated using physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique. Thermal stability and integrity of the AzoPTCD PVD films during the fabrication (similar to 400 degrees C at 10(-6) Torr) were monitored by Raman scattering. Complementary thermogravimetric results showed that thermal degradation of AzoPTCD occurs at 675 degrees C. The growth of the PVD films was established through UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and the surface morphology was surveyed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) as a function of the mass thickness. The AzoPTCD molecular organization in these PVD films was determined using the selection rules of infrared absorption spectroscopy (transmission and reflection-absorption modes). Despite the molecular packing, X-ray diffraction revealed that the PVD films are amorphous. Theoretical calculations (density functional theory, B3LYP) were used to assign the vibrational modes in the infrared and Raman spectra. Metallic nanostructures, able to sustain localized surface plasmons (LSP) were used to achieve surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) and surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF).

Density functional calculation at B3LYP level was employed to study the surface oxygen vacancies and the doping process of Co, Cu and Zn on SnO2 (110) surface models. Large clusters, based on (SnO2)(15) models, were selected to simulate the oxidized (Sn15O30), half-reduced (Sn15O29) and the reduced (Sn15O28) surfaces. The doping process was considered on the reduced surfaces: Sn13Co2O28, Sn13Cu2O28 and Sn13Zn2O28. The results are analyzed and discussed based on a calculation of the energy levels along the bulk band gap region, determined by a projection of the monoelectron level structure on to the atomic basis set and by the density of states. This procedure enables one to distinguish the states coming from the bulk, the oxygen vacancies and the doping process, on passing from an oxidized to a reduced surface, missing bridge oxygen atoms generate electronic levels along the band gap region, associated with 5s/5p of four-/five-fold Sn and 2p of in-plane O centers located on the exposed surface, which is in agreement with previous theoretical and experimental investigations. The formation energy of one and two oxygen vacancies is 3.0 and 3.9 eV, respectively. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The structural and electronic properties of bulk and both oxidized and reduced SnO2(110) surfaces as well as the adsorption process of O-2 on the reduced surface have been investigated by periodic DFT calculations at B3LYP level. The lattice parameters, charge distribution, density of states and band structure are reported for the bulk and surfaces. Surface relaxation effects have been explicitly taken into account by optimizing slab models of nine and seven atomic layers representing the oxidized and reduced surfaces, respectively. The conductivity behavior of the reduced SnO2(110) surface is explained by a distribution of the electrons in the electronic states in the band gap induced by oxygen vacancies. Three types of adsorption approaches of O-2 on the four-fold tin at the reduced SuO(2)(110) surface have been considered. The most exothermic channel corresponds to the adsorption of O-2 parallel to the surface and to the four-fold tin row, and it is believed to be associated with the formation of a peroxo O-2(2-) species. The chemisorption of O-2 on reduced SnO2(110) surface causes a significant depopulation of states along the band gap and it is shown to trap the electrons in the chemisorbed complex producing an electron-depleted space-charge layer in the inner surface region of the material in agreement with some experimental evidences. Structural and electronic properties of the bulk and relaxed surfaces (TiO2 and PbO terminated) of cubic PbTiO3 are investigated by means of periodic quantum-mechanical calculations based on density functional theory. It is observed that the difference in surface energies is small and relaxations effects are most prominent for Ti and Ph surface atoms. The electronic structure shows a splitting of the lowest conduction bands for the TiO2 terminated surface and of the highest valence bands for the PbO terminated slab. The calculated indirect band gap is: 3.18, 2.99 and 3.03 eV for bulk, TiO2 and PbO terminations, respectively. The electron density maps show that the Ti-O bond has a partial covalent character, whereas the Pb-O bonds present a very low covalency. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we employ the state of the art pseudopotential method, within a generalized gradient approximation to the density functional theory, to investigate the adsorption process of benzenethiol and diphenyl disulfide with the silicon (001) surface. A direct comparison of different adsorption structures with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) allow us to identify that benzenethiol and diphenyl disulfide dissociatively adsorb on the silicon surface. In addition, theoretically obtained data suggests that the C6H5SH:Si(001) presents a higher Schottky barrier height contact when compared to other similar aromatic molecules.

Photoreflectance (PR) has been used to study surface electronic properties (electric field, Fermi level pinning, and density of surface states) of undoped-n(+) (UN+) GaAs treated in the solution of ammonium sulfide in isopropanol. Complex Fourier transformation (CFT) of PR spectra from passivated surface shows that the sulfur overlay on GaAs surface makes no contribution to Franz-Keldysh oscillations (FKOs). The barrier height measured by PR is derived from surface states directly, rather than the total barrier height, which includes the potentials derived from Ga-S and As-S dipole layers. Comparing with native oxidated surface, the passivation leads to 80 meV movement of surface Fermi level towards the conduction band minimum, and reduction by more than one order in density of surface states. The behaviour of confined liquids on board an orbiting spacecraft is mainly driven by surface tension phenomena, which cause an apparently anomalous response of the liquid when compared with the behaviour that can be observed on an Earth laboratory provided that the amount of liquid is high enough. The reason is that in an orbiting spacecraft the different inertial forces acting on the bulk of the liquid are almost zero, causing thus capillary forces to be the dominant ones. Of course, since gravity forces are proportional to the liquid volume, whereas surface tension forces are proportional to the liquid surface, there are situations on Earth where capillarity can be the dominant effect, as it happens when very small volume liquid samples are considered. However, work with small size samples may require the use of sophisticated optical devices. Leaving aside the neutral buoyancy technique, a way of handling large liquid interfaces is by using drop towers, where the sample falls subjected to the action of Earth's gravity. This approach is suitable when the characteristic time of the problem under consideration is much smaller than the drop time. In this work the transformation of an out-of-use chimney into a drop tower is presented. Because of the miniaturization, hardiness and low cost of current electronic devices, a drop tower can be used as an inexpensive tool for undergraduate students to experimentally analyse a large variety of surface tension driven phenomena.

We investigate the electronic structure of Ca1-xSrxVO3 using photoemission spectroscopy. Core level spectra establish an electronic phase separation at the surface, leading to a distinctly different surface electronic structure compared to the bulk. Analysis of the photoemission spectra of this system allowed us to separate the surface and bulk contributions. These results help us to understand properties related to two vastly differing energy scales, namely the low-energy scale of thermal excitations ( $\sim\!k_{\rm B}T$) and the high-energy scale related to Coulomb and other electronic interactions.
