Deformation leads to a hardening of steel due to an increase in the density of dislocations and a reduction in their mobility, giving rise to a state of elevated residual stresses in the crystal lattice. In the microstructure, one observes an increase in the contribution of crystalline orientations which are unfavorable to the magnetization, as seen, for example, by a decrease in B(50), the magnetic flux density at a field of 50 A/cm. The present study was carried out with longitudinal strips of fully processed non-oriented (NO) electrical steel, with deformations up to 70% resulting from cold rolling in the longitudinal direction. With increasing plastic deformation, the value of B(50) gradually decreases until it reaches a minimum value, where it remains even for larger deformations. On the other hand, the coercive field H(c) continually increases. Magnetometry results and electron backscatter diffraction results are compared and discussed. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Before one models the effect of plastic deformation on magnetoacoustic emission (MAE), one must first treat non-180 degrees domain wall motion. In this paper, we take the Alessandro-Beatrice-Bertotti-Montorsi (ABBM) model and modify it to treat non-180 degrees wall motion. We then insert a modified stress-dependent Jiles-Atherton model, which treats plastic deformation, into the modified ABBM model to treat MAE and magnetic Barkhausen noise (HBN). In fitting the dependence of these quantities on plastic deformation, we apply a model for when deformation gets into the stage where dislocation tangles are formed, noting two chief effects, one due to increased density of emission centers owing to increased dislocation density, and the other due to a more gentle increase in the residual stress in the vicinity of the dislocation tangles as deformation is increased.

A processing route has been developed for recovering the desired lambda fiber in iron-silicon electrical steel needed for superior magnetic properties in electric motor application. The lambda fiber texture is available in directionally solidified iron-silicon steel with the < 001 > columnar grains but was lost after heavy rolling and recrystallization required for motor laminations. Two steps of light rolling each followed by recrystallization were found to largely restore the desired fiber texture. This strengthening of the < 001 > fiber texture had been predicted on the basis of the strain-induced boundary migration (SIBM) mechanism during recrystallization of lightly rolled steel from existing grains of near the ideal orientation, due to postulated low stored energies. Taylor and finite element models supported the idea of the low stored energy of the lambda fiber grains. The models also showed that the lambda fiber grains, though unstable during rolling, only rotated away from their initial orientations quite slowly.

The optimal combination of the mechanical characteristics of austempered spheroidal graphitic cast steel together with modern casting techniques yielded an economically promising product. The maximum potential of the usage of these steels is related to fabrication and characterization techniques, among which, one of the most important is the cooling diagram (TTT curve). In this work, 3 heats of graphitic steels with the following nominal compositions were cast: 1.0 % C, 2.3 % Si, 0.4 % Mn, and with niobium contents of. 0.0 %, 0.5 % and 1.0 %. TTT curves were determined by dilatometric testing and test specimens of these steels were austempered. The samples were then characterized by hardness testing and optical and SEM microscopy. Tensile, impact (no notch) and wear testing were also performed. The addition of niobium produced significant alterations in the TTT diagrams. Increasing niobium content moves the pearlite transformation nose to the right and the bainitic transformation nose to the left. Tensile strength of these alloys was high, in the range of 1700 MPa and impact values were around of 45 Joules for alloy with 1 % Nb, 49 Joules for alloy with 0.5 % Nb and fracture did not occur for the alloy without the addition of Nb.

This paper proposes a novel rotor structure for high-speed interior permanent magnet motors to overcome huge centrifugal forces under high-speed operation. Instead of the conventional axial stacking of silicon-steel laminations, the retaining shield rotor is inter-stacked by high-strength stainless-steel plates to enhance the rotor strength against the huge centrifugal force. Both mechanical characteristics and electromagnetic behaviors of the retaining shield rotor are analyzed using finite-element method in this paper. Prototypes and experimental results are demonstrated to evaluate the performance. The analysis and test results show that the proposed retaining shield rotor could effectively enhance the rotor strength without a significant impact on the electromagnetic performance, while some design constraints should be compromised.

The wetting of Ti-Cu alloys on Si3N4 was analyzed by the sessile drop method, using an imaging system with a CCD camera during the heating under argon flow. The contact angle was measured as a function of temperature and time. The samples were cut transversally and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS). Wettability of the Ti-Cu alloy on Si3N4 is influenced by the reaction between the Ti and the ceramic. The TC1 and TC2 alloys presented low final contact angle values around 2 degrees and 26 degrees, respectively, indicating good wetting on Si3N4. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Heat treated electrical steel laminations have shown evidence of low ductility behavior, characterized by a small number of bends till fracture, on repeated bending tests. The laminations were produced using a new grade of electrical steel with much lower aluminum content than usual. The problem happens when the oxygen potential (measured by the dew point of the atmosphere) of the heat treatment atmosphere is abnormally high. Furthermore, ductility can be restored by a low-oxygen potential heat treatment. Although the heat treatment resulted in a loss of ductility, the magnetic properties were not deteriorated. The low ductility samples always show intergranular fracture, whereas the un-treated laminations fracture by cleavage. The low ductility is associated with the formation of silicon manganese nitride precipitates formed at grain boundaries, although they are not the cause of the low ductility. Ductility could be restored by a low dew point heat treatment but the inclusions remained in the grain boundaries. The low ductility and its recovery must be ascribed to the presence of nitrogen atoms segregated to the grain boundaries when the heat treatment atmosphere has a high oxygen potential. The lack of aluminum in the composition of the steel hinders the scavenging effect of this element on nitrogen atoms in solution in the steel. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work investigates the influence of the addition of cerium (IV) ions on the anticorrosion properties of organic-inorganic hybrid coatings applied to passivated tin coated steel. In order to evaluate the specific effect of cerium (IV) addition on nanostructural features of the organic and inorganic phases of the hybrid coating, the hydrolytic polycondensation of silicon alkoxide and the radical polymerization of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) function were induced separately. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated by means of linear polarization, Tafel type curves and electrochemical impedance measurements. The impedance results obtained for the hybrid coatings were discussed based on an electrical equivalent circuit used to fit the experimental data. The electrochemical results clearly showed the improvement of the protective properties of the organic-inorganic hybrid coating mainly when the cerium (IV) was added to the organic phase solution precursor, which seemed to be due to the formation of a more uniform and densely reticulated siloxane-PMMA film. We present structural and electrical properties for p- and n-type layers grown close to the transition between a-Si:H and nc-Si:H onto different substrates: Corning 1737 glass, ZnO:Al-coated glass and stainless steel. Structural properties were observed to depend on the substrate properties for samples grown under the same deposition conditions. Different behaviour was observed for n- and p-type material. Stainless steel seemed to enhance crystallinity when dealing with n-type layers, whereas an increased crystalline fraction was obtained on glass for p-type samples. Electrical conduction in the direction perpendicular to the substrate seemed to be mainly determined by the interfaces or by the existence of an amorphous incubation layer that might determine the electrical behaviour. In the direction perpendicular to the substrate, n-type layers exhibited a lower resistance value than p-type ones, showing better contact properties between the layer and the substrate.

There has been a great interest for improving the machining of cast iron materials in the automotive and other industries. Comparative studies for tool used to machine grey cast iron (CI) and compacted graphite iron (CGI) on dry machining were also performed in order to find out why in this case the tool lifetime is not significantly higher. However the machining these materials while considering turning with the traditional high-speed steel and carbide cutting tools present any disadvantages. One of these disadvantages is that all the traditional machining processes involve the cooling fluid to remove the heat generated on workpiece due to friction during cutting. This paper present a new generation of ceramic cutting tool exhibiting improved properties and important advances in machining CI and CGI. The tool performance was analyzed in function of flank wear, temperature and roughness, while can be observed that main effects were found for tool wear, were abrasion to CI and inter-diffusion of constituting elements between tool and CGI, causing crater. However the difference in tool lifetime can be explained by the formation of a MnS layer on the tool surface in the case of grey CI. This layer is missing in the case of CGI.

The interpretation of the effect of plastic deformation on the calculated excess loss component (anomalous-loss) supports the concept of loss separation. Magnetic losses and Barkhausen noise of nonoriented electrical steel sheets were measured on Epstein strips taken from a single coil of 0.8% Si nonoriented electrical steel. Sheets were extracted in the annealed condition, without any skin pass and with a grain size of 18 mu m. This material was cold rolled in order to obtain sets of samples with true strain from 2% up to 29%. X-ray diffraction was used to estimate the dislocation density. The analysis of magnetic properties was performed by Barkhausen noise measurements and also by analyzing the hysteresis loops obtained from Epstein frame measurements for different inductions and different frequencies (including the quasi-static regime for hysteresis loss measurements). These data allowed us to observe that most of the well known total loss increase with plastic deformation is due to an increase in the hysteresis loss component, while excess loss decreases to become negligible. This behavior can be explained if it is assumed that the plastic deformation lead to an increase in the number of domain walls per unit volume, thereby decreasing the excess loss. Barkhausen peak area increases with plastic deformation, reproducing results taken from samples of different silicon content.

A problem of metallurgy during the last part of the Nineteenth and the early Twentieth Century, and one that stood very near the front, was investigations of methods to produce a non-corrosive surface on iron and steel without affecting the physical properties of these base metals.
