Three new MnIII complexes, {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OCn)](ClO4)}(n) (1), {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OPh)](ClO4)}(n) (2) and {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OBz)](ClO4)}(2) (3) (where salen = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane dianion, OCn = cinnamate, OPh = phenylacetate and OBz = benzoate), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The crystal structures reveal that all three structures contain syn-anti carboxylatebridged dimeric [Mn-2(salen)(2)(OOCR)](+) cations (OOCR = bridging carboxylate) that are joined together by weak Mn center dot center dot center dot O(phenoxo) interactions to form infinite alternating chain structures in 1 and 2, but the relatively long Mn center dot center dot center dot O(phenoxo) distance [3.621(2)angstrom] in 3 restricts this structure to tetranuclear units. Magnetic studies showed that 1 and 2 exhibited magnetic long-range order at T-N = 4.0 and 4.6 K (T-N = Neel transition temperature), respectively, to give spin-canted antiferromagnetic structures. Antiferromagnetic coupling was also observed in 3 but no peaks were recorded in the field-cooled magnetization (FCM) or zero-field-cooled magnetization (ZFCM) data, indicating that 3 remained paramagnetic down to 2 K. This dominant antiferromagnetic coupling is attributed to the carboxylate bridges. The ferromagnetic coupling expected due to the Mn-O(phenoxo)center dot center dot center dot Mn bridge plays an auxiliary role in the magnetic chain, but is an essential component of the bulk magnetic properties of the material.

A general view of the electroanalytical applications of metal-salen complexes is discussed in this review. The family of Schiff bases derived from ethylenediamine and ortho-phenolic aldehydes (N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato) - salen) and their complexes of various transition metals, such as Al, Ce, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ga, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, and V have been used in many fields of chemical research for a wide range of applications such as catalysts for the oxygenation of organic molecules, epoxidation of alkenes, oxidation of hydrocarbons and many other catalyzed reactions; as electrocatalyst for novel sensors development; and mimicking the catalytic functions of enzymes. A brief history of the synthesis and reactivity of metal-salen complexes will be presented. The potentialities and possibilities of metal-Salen complexes modified electrodes in the development of electrochemical sensors as well as other types of sensors, their construction and methods of fabrication, and the potential application of these modified electrodes will be illustrated and discussed.

Two modified Jacobsen-type catalysts were anchored onto an amine functionalised hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) using two distinct anchoring procedures: (i) one was anchored directly through the carboxylic acid functionalised diimine bridge fragment of the complex (CAT1) and (ii) the other through the hydroxyl group on the aldehyde fragment of the complex (CAT2), mediated by cyanuric chloride. The new heterogeneous catalyst, as well as the precedent materials, were characterised by elemental analyses, DRIFT, UV-vis, porosimetry and XPS which showed that the complexes were successfully anchored onto the hexagonal mesoporous silica. These materials acted as active heterogeneous catalysts in the epoxidation of styrene, using m-CPBA as oxidant, and α-methylstyrene, using NaOCl as oxidant. Under the latter conditions they acted also as enantioselective heterogeneous catalysts. Furthermore, when compared to the reaction run in homogeneous phase under similar experimental conditions, an increase in asymmetric induction was observed for the heterogenised CAT1, while the opposite effect was observed for the heterogenised CAT2, despite of CAT2 being more enantioselective than CAT1 in homogeneous phase. These results indicate that the covalent attachment of the Jacobsen catalyst through the diimine bridge leads to improved enantiomeric excess (%ee), whereas covalent attachment through one of the aldehyde fragments results in a negative effect in the %ee. Using α-methylstyrene and NaOCl as oxidant, heterogeneous catalyst reuse led to no significant loss of catalytic activity and enantioselectivity. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The commercially available Jacobsen catalyst, Mn(salen), was occluded in hybrid polymeric membranes based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The obtained systems were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and SEM techniques. The membranes were used as a catalytic barrier between two different phases: an organic substrate phase (cyclooctene or styrene) in the absence of solvent, and an aqueous solution of either t-BuOOH or H(2)O(2). Membranes containing different percentages of PVA were prepared, in order to modulate their hydrophilic/hydrophobic swelling properties. The occluded complex proved to be an efficient catalyst for the oxidation of alkenes. The new triphasic system containing a cheap and easily available catalyst allowed substrate oxidation and easy product separation using ""green"" oxidants. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The reaction between 2-aminobenzenesulfonic acid and 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde produces the acyclic Schiff base 2-[(2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) methylideneamino] benzenesulfonic acid (H2L center dot 3H(2)O) (1). In situ reactions of this compound with Cu(II) salts and, eventually, in the presence of pyridine (py) or 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy) lead to the formation of the mononuclear complexes [CuL(H2O)(2)] (2) and [CuL(2,2'-bipy)]center dot DMF center dot H2O (3) and the diphenoxo-bridged dicopper compounds [CuL(py)](2) (4) and [CuL(EtOH)](2)center dot 2H(2)O (5). In 2-5 the L-2-ligand acts as a tridentate chelating species by means of one of the O-sulfonate atoms, the O-phenoxo and the N-atoms. The remaining coordination sites are then occupied by H2O (in 2), 2,2'-bipyridine (in 3), pyridine (in 4) or EtOH (in 5). Hydrogen bond interactions resulted in R-2(2) (14) and in R-4(4)(12) graph sets leading to dimeric species (in 2 and 3, respectively), 1D chain associations (in 2 and 5) or a 2D network (1). Complexes 2-5 are applied as selective catalysts for the homogeneous peroxidative (with tert-butylhydroperoxide, TBHP) oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols, under solvent-and additive-free conditions and under low power microwave (MW) irradiation. A quantitative yield of acetophenone was obtained by oxidation of 1-phenylethanol with compound 4 [TOFs up to 7.6 x 10(3) h(-1)] after 20 min of MW irradiation, whereas the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde is less effective (TOF 992 h(-1)). The selectivity of 4 to oxidize the alcohol relative to the ene function is demonstrated when using cinnamyl alcohol as substrate.

The preparation, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two new isoelectronic and isomorphous formate-and nitrite-bridged 1D chains of Mn(III)-salen complexes, [Mn(salen)(HCOO)](n) (1) and [Mn(salen)(NO2)](n) (2), where salen is the dianion of N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane, are presented. The structures show that the salen ligand coordinates to the four equatorial sites of the metal ion and the formate or nitrite ions coordinate to the axial positions to bridge the Mn(III)-salen units through a syn-anti mu-1 kappa O:2 kappa O' coordination mode. Such a bridging mode is unprecedented in Mn(III) for formate and in any transition metal ion for nitrite. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 1 and 2 indicate the presence of ferromagnetic exchange interactions with J values of 0.0607 cm(-1) (for 1) and 0.0883 cm(-1) (for 2). The ac measurements indicate negligible frequency dependence for 1 whereas compound 2 exhibits a decrease of chi(ac)' and a concomitant increase of chi(ac)'' on elevating frequency around 2 K. This finding is an indication of slow magnetization reversal characteristic of single-chain magnets or spin-glasses. The mu-nitrito-1 kappa O:2 kappa O' bridge seems to be a potentially superior magnetic coupler to the formate bridge for the construction of single-molecule/-chain magnets as its coupling constant is greater and the chi(ac)' and chi(ac)'' show frequency dependence.

Primidone (PRM) oxidation by various oxidants such as iodosylbenzene (PhIO), tert-butyl hydroperoxide 70wt.% (t-BOOH), 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (m-CPBA) and hydrogen peroxide 30wt.%, mediated by either a salen complex or metalloporphyrins, was investigated. The catalytic systems led to phenylethyl-malondiamide (PEMA) and phenobarbital (FEND), the same metabolites obtained in vivo with P450 enzymes, although three other products were also detected. Product formation was highly dependent on the oxidant, co-catalyst (imidazole), pH and dioxygen. These biomimetic chemical models have potential application in the synthesis of drug metabolites. which should provide samples for pharmacological tests. They can also be employed in studies that pursue the elucidation of in vivo drug metabolism. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Jacobsen catalyst, Mn(salen), was immobilized in chitosan membrane. The obtained Mn(salen)-Chit was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), degree of N-acetylation by (1)H NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the encapsulated catalyst displayed the typical bands of the Jacobsen catalyst, and the FT-IR presented an absorption band characteristic of the imines present in the Jacobsen catalyst. The chitosan membranes were available, in a biphasic system, as a catalytic barrier between two different phases: an organic substrate phase (cyclooctene or styrene) and an aqueous solution of either m-CPBA, t-BuOOH or H(2)O(2), and dismissing the need for phase transfer agents and leading to better product yields compared with the catalyst in homogeneous medium. This new catalyst did not leach from the support and was reused many times, leading to high turnover frequencies. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A palladium(II)-catalyzed hydroxycyclization-carbonylation-lactonization sequence with appropriate pent-4-ene-1,3-diols provides efficient access to the bicyclic gamma -lactones, 5-n-butyl- and 5-n-hexyltetrahydrofuro-[3,2-b]furan-2(3H)-ones (3) and (4), respectively, in both racemic and enantiomeric forms. Some of the substrate pent-4-ene-1,3-diols of high enantiomeric excess (ee) have been derived from racemic terminal epoxides by hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) using cobalt (III)-salen complexes. (9Z,12R)-(+)-Ricinoleic acid also serves as a chiral pool source of other pent-4-ene-1,3-diols. These syntheses and enantioselective gas chromatography confirm the structures and absolute stereochemistry of the lactones in some species of parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The highly abundant 5-n-hexyltetrahydrofuro-[3,2-b]furan-2(3H)-one (4) in Diachasmimorpha kraussii and D. longicaudata is of high ee (> 99%) with (3aR,5R,6aR) stereochemistry.

The bioactive naphtoquinone lapachol was studied in vitro by a biomimetic model with Jacobsen catalyst (manganese(III) salen) and iodosylbenzene as oxidizing agent. Eleven oxidation derivatives were thus identified and two competitive oxidation pathways postulated. Similar to Mn(III) porphyrins, Jacobsen catalyst mainly induced the formation of para-naphtoquinone derivatives of lapachol, but also of two ortho-derivatives. The oxidation products were used to develop a GC MS (SIM mode) method for the identification of potential phase I metabolites in vivo. Plasma analysis of Wistar rats orally administered with lapachol revealed two metabolites, alpha-lapachone and dehydro-alpha-lapachone. Hence, the biomimetic model with a manganese salen complex has evidenced its use as a valuable tool to predict and elucidate the in vivo phase I metabolism of lapachol and possibly also of other bioactive natural compounds. The photochemical behavior of nitrosyl complexes Ru(salen)(NO)(OH(2))(+) and Ru(salen)(NO) Cl (salen = N, N`-ethylenebis-(salicylideneiminato) dianion) in aqueous solution is described. Irradiation with light in the 350-450 nm range resulted in nitric oxide (NO) release from both. For Ru(salen)(NO) Cl secondary photoreactions also resulted in chloride aquation. Thus, in both cases the final photoproduct is the diaquo cation Ru(III) (salen) (OH(2))(2)(+), for which pK(a)`s of 5.9 and 9.1 were determined for the coordinated waters. The pK(a) of the Ru(salen)(NO)(OH(2))+ cation was also determined as 4.5 +/- 0.1, and the relative acidities of these ruthenium aquo units are discussed in the context of the bonding interactions between Ru(III) and NO. Two linear, trinuclear mixed-valence complexes, [Co-II{(mu-L-1)(mu-OAc)Co-III (OAc)}(2)] (1) and [Co-II(mu-L-2) (mu-OAc)Co-III(OAc)}(2)] (2) and two mononuclear Con' complexes [Co-III{L-3)(OAc)] (3), and [Co-III {L-4}(OAc)] (4) were prepared and the molecular structures of 1, 2 and 4 elucidated on the basis of X-ray crystallography [OAc = Acetate ion, H2L1 = H(2)Salen 1,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5-diazahexa-1,5-diene, H2L2 H2Me2-Salen = 2,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazaocta-2,6-diene, H2L3 = H(2)Salpn = 1,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazahepta1,6-diene, H2L4 = H(2)Me(2)Salpn = 2,8-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)3,7-diazanona-2,7-dienel. In complexes I and 2, the acetate groups show both monodentate and bridging bidentate coordination modes, whereas chelating bidentate acetate is present in 4. The terminal (CoN2O4)-N-III centres in 1 and 2 exhibit uniform facial arrangements of both non-bridged N2O and bridging O-3 donor sets and the Co-II centre is coordinated to six (four phenoxo and two acetato) oxygen atoms of the bridging ligands. The effective magnetic moment at room temperature corresponds to the presence of high-spin Coll in both 1 and 2. The complexes 1 and 2 are thus Co-III(S = 0)Co-II(S = 3/2)-Co-II(S = 0) trimers. Complexes 3 and 4 are monomeric and diamagnetic containing low-spin Co-III(S = 0) with chelating tetradentate Schiff base and bidentate acetate. Calculations based on DFT rationalise the formation of trinuclear or monomiclear complexes. (C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).

Three di-Schiff-base ligands, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine (H(2)Salpn), N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanedianiine (H(2)Salpen) and N,N'-bis(salicylidine)-ethylenediamine (H(2)Salen) react with Ni(SCN)(2). 4H(2)O in 2:3 molar ratios to form the complexes; mononuclear [Ni(HSalpn)(NCS)(H2O)]center dot H2O (1a), trinuclear [{Ni(Salpen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (2b) and trinuclear [{Ni(Salen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (3) respectively. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-VIS spectra, and room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structures of la and 2b have been confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis. In complex la, the Ni(II) atom is coordinated equatorially by the tetradentate, mononegative Schiff-base, HSalpn. Axial coordination of isothiocyanate group and a water molecule completes its octahedral geometry. The hydrogen atom attached to one of the oxygen atoms of the Schiff base is involved in a very strong hydrogen bond with a neighboring unit to form a centrosymmetric dimer. In 2b, two square planar [Ni(Salpen)] units act as bide mate oxygen donor ligands to a central Ni(II) which is also coordinated by two mutually cis N-bonded thiocyanate ligands to complete its distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 3 possesses a similar structure to that of 2b. A dehydrated form of la and a hydrated form of 2b have been obtained and characterized. The importance of electronic and steric factors in the variation of the structures is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three new Mn(III) complexes [MnL1(OOCH)(OH2)] (1), [MnL2(OH2)(2)][Mn2L22(NO2)(3)] (2) and [Mn2L21(NO2)(2)] (3) (where H2L1 = H(2)Me(2)Salen = 2,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazaocta-2,6-diene and H2L2 = H(2)Salpn = 1,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazahepta-1,6-diene) have been synthesized. X-ray crystal structure analysis reveals that 1 is a mononuclear species whereas 2 contains a mononuclear cationic and a dinuclear nitrite bridged (mu-1 kappa O:2 kappa O') anionic unit. Complex 3 is a phenoxido bridged dimer containing terminally coordinated nitrite. Complexes 1-3 show excellent catecholase-like activity with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) as the substrate. Kinetic measurements suggest that the rate of catechol oxidation follows saturation kinetics with respect to the substrate and first order kinetics with respect to the catalyst. Formation of bis(mu-oxo)dimanganese(III,III) as an intermediate during the course of reaction is identified from ESI-MS spectra. The characteristic six line EPR spectra of complex 2 in the presence of 3,5-DTBC supports the formation of manganese(II)-semiquinonate as an intermediate species during the catalytic oxidation of 3,5-DTBC.
