A través desta nova srie, tentamos conhecer os diferentes aspectos pessoais dos integrantes da comunidade ictiológica ibero-americana. Esta iniciativa compartilha o espírito e o objetivo das biografias de pesquisadores brasileiros, procurando, informalmente, outro ponto de conexão na “comunidade de ictiólogos ibero-americanos. Talvez esteja equivocado na minha apreciação, mas creio que esta tentativa compensa, já que, com a colaboração generosa e voluntária dos integrantes deste “universo”, marcaremos um registro no tempo da Ictiologia Neotropical.

O presente trabalho analisa a trajetória do político e intelectual petebista San Tiago Dantas, buscando situá-lo como o ideólogo de um projeto trabalhista. Sua filiação ao PTB de Minas Gerais, em 1955, ocorreu graças à intervenção de João Goulart, a despeito da hesitação dos correligionários mineiros. Em um partido dominado por gaúchos, a ascenso deste carioca, deputado federal por Minas Gerais, foi bastante surpreendente, mas facilmente explicável. Primeiro, apesar de despossuído de capital político relevante, destacou-se rapidamente pelo seu capital intelectual. Em segundo lugar, a entrada de San Tiago Dantas viria a preencher um vácuo no partido, após as mortes, em 1955, de Alberto Pasqualini e Lucio Bittencourt, dois ideólogos do trabalhismo. Diferentemente de Bittencourt que confrontava crescentemente a liderança de Jango e, mais parecido, nesse ponto, com Pasqualini, Dantas terá o papel de desenvolver um corpo doutrinário para o trabalhismo que se aproximasse das perspectivas políticas do grupo janguista, ao qual se filiou. Para isso, foi importante a aquisição do Jornal do Commercio, no início de 1957. Por meio deste, San Tiago contribuiu para difundir e renovar o trabalhismo, usando-o como veículo de propaganda das ideias nacionalistas, desenvolvimentistas e distributivistas. Por essas razões, tornou-se estratégico para o partido e, principalmente, para o grupo janguista o ingresso de Dantas. Entre o final da década de 1950 e início da década de 1960, o trabalhismo elaborado por San Tiago Dantas foi a referência principal deste grupo janguista, rivalizando com o trabalhismo de Fernando Ferrari e Leonel Brizola, que disputavam com Jango a liderança do partido. O trabalhismo de San Tiago Dantas era uma proposta de renovação da sociedade, pela defesa de um amplo programa de reformas comprometido com as instituições democráticas. Acredito, portanto, na importância do estudo de seu trabalhismo para nos ajudar a compreender um pouco melhor o contexto político que precede o golpe civil-militar de 1964. Se, nos últimos anos, a literatura especializada avançou bastante no entendimento de que a queda da democracia brasileira foi resultado de um momento político de radicalização, penso ser relevante destacar a existência de alternativas políticas aos extremismos de esquerda e de direita. Neste sentido, a análise da trajetória política de San Tiago Dantas, sua proposta trabalhista e a formação da Frente Progressista so exemplos de uma cultura política de esquerda, trabalhista, reformista e democrática, presente no Brasil naquele momento, que, embora minoritária e vencida, não deve ser esquecida.

The advancements of technology in the field of public transport have been considerable. Information Technology (IT) has made the dissemination of information effortless, contributing to reduced perceived waiting time, increased sense of security, and value for money. Nevertheless, and in light of the ever more obvious widespread presence of powerful mobile devices, it seems that the use of technology may be geared towards supplementary services other than telematics. Looking at it from a passenger’s perspective, this article provides an overview of what IT-based services are currently offered in public transport and what is their assessed impact. We finalise by putting forward possible directions that future services might follow, and stress out the necessity to come up with frameworks that enable for the impact assessment on service quality and customer satisfaction.

While substantial research on intelligent transportation systems has focused on the development of novel wireless communication technologies and protocols, relatively little work has sought to fully exploit proximity-based wireless technologies that passengers actually carry with them today. This paper presents the real-world deployment of a system that exploits public transit bus passengers Bluetooth-capable devices to capture and reconstruct micro- and macro-passenger behavior. We present supporting evidence that approximately 12% of passengers already carry Bluetooth-enabled devices and that the data collected on these passengers captures with almost 80 % accuracy the daily fluctuation of actual passengers flows. The paper makes three contributions in terms of understanding passenger behavior: We verify that the length of passenger trips is exponentially bounded, the frequency of passenger trips follows a power law distribution, and the microstructure of the network of passenger movements is polycentric.

Travelling by public transport is usually regarded as boring and uninteresting. Refraining from talking to the stranger next to you may be due to limitations that are self-imposed and further corroborated by social expectations and cultural norms that govern behaviour in public space. Our design research into passenger interactions on board of urban commuter trains has informed the development of the TrainRoulette prototype – a mobile app for situated, real-time chats between train passengers. We study the impact of our design intervention on shaping perceptions of the train journey experience. Moreover, we are interested in the implications of such ICT-mediated interactions within train journeys for stimulating social offline interactions and new forms of passenger engagement.

Although advances in technology now enable people to communicate 'anytime, anyplace', it is not clear how citizens can be motivated to actually do so. This paper evaluates the impact of three principles of psychological empowerment, namely perceived self-efficacy, sense of community and causal importance, on public transport passengers' motivation to report issues and complaints while on the move. A week-long study with 65 participants revealed that self-efficacy and causal importance increased participation in short bursts and increased perceptions of service quality over longer periods. Finally, we discuss the implications of these findings for citizen participation projects and reflect on design opportunities for mobile technologies that motivate citizen participation.

The importance of design practice informed by urban morphology has led to intensification in interest, signalled by the formation of the ISUF Research and Practice Task Force and voiced through several recent academic publications cognisant of this current debate, this paper reports on a recent urban design workshop at which morphology was set as one of the key themes. Initially planned to be programmed as a augmented concurrent event to the 2013 20th ISUF conference held in Brisbane, the two day Bridge to Bridge: Ridge to Ridge urban design workshop nevertheless took place the following month, and involved over one hundred design professionals and academics. The workshop sought to develop several key urban design principles and recommendations addressing a major government development proposal sited in the most important heritage precinct of the city. The paper will focus specifically on one of the nine groups, in which the design proposal was purposefully guided by morphological input. The discussion will examine the design outcomes and illicit review and feedback from participants, shedding critical light on the issues that arise from such a design approach.

This thesis presents the results of a study into ways that technology can be appropriated and designed to support urban rail commuters in their daily journeys. The study evaluated a mobile application prototype deployed along the Brisbane passenger rail network. This prototype was designed to support social interaction between passengers sharing the same trains. This thesis provides a step forward in showing the relevance of increasingly creating solutions that contribute to a more enjoyable and attractive public transport service.

We studied the ways that urban commuter train passengers experience their journeys. We present the design process and in-situ evaluation of TrainYarn, a mobile app prototype designed to facilitate social interaction between co-located urban train passengers. Through the deployment of the prototype, we sought to probe perceptions of social space with a view to positively impact the assessment of public transport. Our results support that our target users saw value in the use of TrainYarn, perceiving it as emancipatory, in alignment with their communicative needs, and having the ability to transform their perceptions of social space. To further inform future research and practice, we put forward a series of design recommendations.

A entrega de serviços de tecnologia da informação de baixa qualidade ainda é uma realidade nas empresas brasileiras. Clientes e usuários frustrados e baixo alinhamento dos serviços com as funções vitais do negócio estão associadas diretamente a essa percepção de qualidade. Estuda um dos primeiros passos a ser dado na busca de elevação da maturidade na entrega desses serviços: a construção de um catálogo de serviços. Identifica na literatura e propõe um modelo para a construção de catálogos de serviços de tecnologia da informação aplicável a organizações com o nível médio de maturidade das empresas brasileiras, baseado nas boas práticas preconizadas pelo Information Technology Infrastructure Library - ITIL, na sua verso 3.
