Employing aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide (70%) as an inexpensive reagent a useful methodology for the regioselective and chemoselective deprotection of terminal acetonide groups in aqueous medium is developed. A variety of acetonide derivatives on reaction with aqueous tert-butyl hydroperoxide in water:tert-butanol (1:1) furnish the corresponding acetonide deprotected diols in good yields. A large number of acid labile protecting functional groups and other functional moieties were found to be unaffected under the conditions employed for the present deprotection. This method has been successfully applied to sugar derivatives.

Several secondary alcohols undergo the Mitsunobu reaction with triphenylphosphine, diethyl azodicarboxylate and (1S)-(+)-ketopinic acid (0.5 equiv. each relative to alcohol) in CH2Cl2 solution at -23degreesC, to furnish the chiral secondary alcohol and its ketopinate ester (d.e. >95%,). Chromatographic separation of these and subsequent hydrolysis of the ketopinate ester (KOH EtOH/0degreesC) provides the chiral secondary alcohol in overall yields of similar to75% and e.e. of similar to80%. When the above Mitsunobu reaction is performed with 1 equiv. of all the reactants. an effective dynamic kinetic resolution of the alcohol is observed in two cases, the ketopinate esters being isolated in 63 and 75% yields and >95% d.e. We prove a sub-convex estimate for the sup-norm of L-2-normalized holomorphic modular forms of weight k on the upper half plane, with respect to the unit group of a quaternion division algebra over Q. More precisely we show that when the L-2 norm of an eigenfunction f is one, parallel to f parallel to(infinity) <<(epsilon) k(1/2-1/33+epsilon) for any epsilon > 0 and for all k sufficiently large.

Crosslinked polymeric salen-Co(III) complexes derived from a novel dialdehyde and a trialdehyde were synthesized and employed in the hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) of terminal epoxides. Up to 99%, ee were obtained with only 0.16-0.02 mol%,, of catalyst (based on catalytic unit). (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Titanocene complexes combined with nanometer-size sodium hydride are extremely active and selective catalysts for the hydrogenation of terminal alkenes under normal pressure. The initial turnover frequencies (TOFinitial) may reach 100-300 s(-1) in the hydrogenation of 1-hexene. The highest catalytic efficiency turnover (TO) reaches 1.5 x 10(5) in 2 h for the hydrogenation of styrene. These catalytic systems exhibit specific selectivity toward alkene substrates. Only terminal alkenes can be hydrogenated. No isomerization of carbon-carbon double bonds occurs during hydrogenation. A suitable substituent on the cyclopentadienyl ring of titanocene and the use of nanometric sodium hydride are key factors in the high efficiency of these catalytic systems. Poly-salen-Co(III) complexes were employed in the hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) of terminal epoxides and ee's up to 98% were obtained. In the HKR of epichlorohydrin, the polymeric catalysts can be recovered and modified for recycling. The recovered polymer catalyst shows good activity and selectivity. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. A novel phosphoramidite, N,N-diisopropylamino-2-cyanoethyl-9-anthracenemethyl phosphoramidite 1, was prepared and coupled with the terminal 5'-hydroxyl of support-bound T10 and the putative phosphite triester intermediate was subsequently reacted with iodine in the presence of either water or a series of primary and secondary amines. The reactivity of 1 compared to a previously reported benzyl phosphoramidite 2 was also investigated: oxidation of the product of coupling 2 with CPG-T10-5'OH under aqueous conditions resulted in greater than 30% of the benzyl moiety being retained. In contrast, essentially complete loss of the 9-anthracenemethyl group was observed using 1 under the same conditions. Oligonucleotides modified with a terminal phosphate monoester, lipophilic, fluorescent or cationic groups were thus prepared.

The motor points of the skeletal muscles, mainly of interest to anatomists and physiologists, have recently attracted much attention from researchers in the field of functional electrical stimulation. The muscle motor point has been defined as the entry point of the motor nerve branch into the epimysium of the muscle belly. Anatomists have pointed out that many muscles in the limbs have multiple motor points. Knowledge of the location of nerve branches and terminal nerve entry points facilitates the exact insertion and the suitable selection of the number of electrodes required for each muscle for functional electrical stimulation. The present work therefore aimed to describe the number, location, and distribution of motor points in the human forearm muscles to obtain optimal hand function in many clinical situations. Twenty three adult human cadaveric forearms were dissected. The numbers of primary nerves and motor points for each muscle were tabulated. The mean numbers and the standard deviation were calculated and grouped in tables. Data analyses were performed with the use of a statistical analysis package (SPSS 13.0). The proximal third of the muscle was the usual part of the muscle that received the motor points. Most of the forearm muscles were innervated from the lateral side and deep surface of the muscle. The information in this study may also be usefully applied in selective denervation procedures to balance muscles in spastic upper limbs. Copyright © 2007 Via Medica.

Ligated Pd(II) complexes have been studied for the catalytic oxidation of terminal olefins to their corresponding methyl ketones. The method uses aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant; a sustainable and readily accessible oxidant. The choice of ligand, counterion and solvent all have a significant effect on catalytic performance and we were able to develop systems which perform well for these challenging oxidations.

This study was particularly aimed at the examinations and the effect they have on schooling at the secondary school level in Zimbabwe. The views and opinions of teachers on the use of terminal examinations for certification and the influence they are seen to have on teachers' approach to the curriculum were examined. The literature has shown that there is widespread criticism of the justice and effects of terminal examinations. It is argued that they lead to an over-emphasis of that which is measured, knowledge and intellectual ability, at the expense of that kind of education progress which is almost impossible to measure in an end-of-the-course assessment. Three hundred and six secondary school teachers responded to a survey which asked for teachers' perceptions of examinations and the curriculum. The findings of this study indicated that teaching is structured towards examinations. Although teachers are trying to teach and develop reasoning skills and other activities, the pressure of examinations and the importance of doing well in them force teachers to restrict themselves to examination requirements.

Terminally protected acyclic tripeptides containing tyrosine residues at both termini self-assemble into nanotubes in crystals through various non-covalent interactions including intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The nanotube has an average internal diameter of 5 angstrom (0.5 nm) and the tubular ensemble is developed through the hydrogen-bonded phenolic-OH side chains of tyrosine (Tyr) residues [Org. Lett. 2004, 6, 4463]. We have synthesized and studied several tripeptides 3-6 to probe the role of tyrosine residues in nanotube structure formation. These peptides either have only one Tyr residue at N- or C-termini or they have one or two terminally located phenylalanine (Phe) residues. These tripeptides failed to form any kind of nanotubular structure in the solid state. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of these peptides 3-6 clearly demonstrate that substitution of any one of the terminal Tyr residues in the Boc-Tyr-X-Tyr-OMe (X=VaI or Ile) sequence disrupts the formation of the nanotubular structure indicating that the presence of two terminally located Tyr residues is vital for nanotube formation.
