This paper presents the TEC4SEA research infrastructure created in Portugal to support research, development, and validation of marine technologies. It is a multidisciplinary open platform, capable of supporting research, development, and test of marine robotics, telecommunications, and sensing technologies for monitoring and operating in the ocean environment. Due to the installed research facilities and its privileged geographic location, it allows fast access to deep sea, and can support multidisciplinary research, enabling full validation and evaluation of technological solutions designed for the ocean environment. It is a vertically integrated infrastructure, in the sense that it possesses a set of skills and resources which range from pure conceptual research to field deployment missions, with strong industrial and logistic capacities in the middle tier of prototype production. TEC4SEA is open to the entire scientific and enterprise community, with a free access policy for researchers affiliated with the research units that ensure its maintenance and sustainability. The paper describes the infrastructure in detail, and discusses associated research programs, providing a strategic vision for deep sea research initiatives, within the context of both the Portuguese National Ocean Strategy and European Strategy frameworks.

Over a decade ago, nanotechnologists began research on applications of nanomaterials for medicine. This research has revealed a wide range of different challenges, as well as many opportunities. Some of these challenges are strongly related to informatics issues, dealing, for instance, with the management and integration of heterogeneous information, defining nomenclatures, taxonomies and classifications for various types of nanomaterials, and research on new modeling and simulation techniques for nanoparticles. Nanoinformatics has recently emerged in the USA and Europe to address these issues. In this paper, we present a review of nanoinformatics, describing its origins, the problems it addresses, areas of interest, and examples of current research initiatives and informatics resources. We suggest that nanoinformatics could accelerate research and development in nanomedicine, as has occurred in the past in other fields. For instance, biomedical informatics served as a fundamental catalyst for the Human Genome Project, and other genomic and ?omics projects, as well as the translational efforts that link resulting molecular-level research to clinical problems and findings.

Organizations and individuals dealing with non-commercial initiatives are in permanent search for funding. Crowdfunding is an alternative way of collecting funds from general public through Internet-based platforms, which is currently gaining popularity all over the world. There are several research initiatives in that field that show the influence of different factors on the success of campaigns, both with commercial and non-commercial objectives. Non-profit nature of the project is named among key predictors of positive outcome. In this context, the purpose of this work is to check whether the tendencies detected by scholars are valid for non-commercial initiatives, especially those having socially aware objectives, posted on the Belarusian crowdfunding platform Ulej. The method used for validation of the research hypotheses is binary logistic regression and statistical test. The results showed that the dependent variable success is influenced by such independent variables as the funding goal, the sum collected, the number of sponsors and the average pledge. On the other hand, the effect of the duration period is not significant. Inferential analysis shows that there is no difference in the level of success between commercial and non-commercial projects and that social orientation does not increase the likelihood of meeting financial goals. The findings are opposite to those provided in literature. However that could be explained by the short period of functioning of platform and the small number of projects.

A monitorização da atividade física é um tema que tem adquirido cada vez mais importância. Tal deve-se ao crescente sedentarismo da população em geral e adquirindo níveis muito elevados de importância devido a vários fatores como por exemplo o enorme crescimento tecnológico e menor tempo de lazer. Cada vez mais a população tem a tendência de substituir atividades como uma simples caminhada para o trabalho ou escola por algum tipo de tecnologia que reduz o consumo energético do corpo, sendo paradigmático o uso (excessivo) de viaturas automóveis. Em consequência da escassez de atividade física, doenças como a obesidade e problemas cardíacos têm vindo a aumentar nas várias faixas etárias, mas assume uma particular relevância em crianças. Nas últimas décadas têm aumentado as iniciativas de investigação com o objetivo de compreender os fatores que afetam a prática de atividade física para posteriormente a potenciar. Existem diversos métodos contudo, destaca-se preferencialmente os de observação direta, com observadores presentes. No entanto estes apresentam algumas limitações. Consequentemente são necessários esforços de investigação adicionais e novas técnicas ou metodologias. Nesta dissertação pretende-se contribuir ativamente para a investigação na área da promoção de atividade física através da utilização de vídeo, com uma análise realizada sobre dois pontos principais. Primeiro são analisadas métodos do estado de arte que requerem a presença de observadores e de que forma a captura de vídeos pode ser utilizada como alternativa ou complemento. De seguida, é realizado um estudo e avançada uma proposta inicial para utilizar mecanismos de processamento e classificação automática da atividade em alternativa ao observador humano.

Chagas disease is a chronic, tropical, parasitic disease, endemic throughout Latin America. The large-scale migration of populations has increased the geographic distribution of the disease and cases have been observed in many other countries around the world. To strengthen the critical mass of knowledge generated in different countries, it is essential to promote cooperative and translational research initiatives. We analyzed authorship of scientific documents on Chagas disease indexed in the Medline database from 1940 to 2009. Bibliometrics was used to analyze the evolution of collaboration patterns. A Social Network Analysis was carried out to identify the main research groups in the area by applying clustering methods. We then analyzed 13,989 papers produced by 21,350 authors. Collaboration among authors dramatically increased over the study period, reaching an average of 6.2 authors per paper in the last five-year period. Applying a threshold of collaboration of five or more papers signed in co-authorship, we identified 148 consolidated research groups made up of 1,750 authors. The Chagas disease network identified constitutes a "small world," characterized by a high degree of clustering and a notably high number of Brazilian researchers.

A través dels seus serveis de gestió documental a les aules de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, UOC), la Biblioteca de la UOC actua com un veritable facilitador de l'aprenentatge i l'ensenyament i té un paper central en el model de aprenentatge de la universitat. A més a més, serveix com un model a seguir per altres biblioteques universitàries en termes del que s'espera d'elles en el marc del nou Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior (EEES) i la creixent necessitat que funcionin com a centres de recursos d'aprenentatge. Contribuint a l'èxit de la biblioteca, el model d'aprenentatge i ensenyament de la UOC crea un entorn d'aprenentatge virtual i asíncron per als estudiants, i permet a la biblioteca de la UOC ser present en totes les seves aules.

Tree nuts, peanuts and seeds are nutrient dense foods whose intake has been shown to be associated with reduced risk of some chronic diseases. They are regularly consumed in European diets either as whole, in spreads or from hidden sources (e.g. commercial products). However, little is known about their intake profiles or differences in consumption between European countries or geographic regions. The objective of this study was to analyse the population mean intake and average portion sizes in subjects reporting intake of nuts and seeds consumed as whole, derived from hidden sources or from spreads. Data was obtained from standardised 24-hour dietary recalls collected from 36 994 subjects in 10 different countries that are part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Overall, for nuts and seeds consumed as whole, the percentage of subjects reporting intake on the day of the recall was: tree nuts = 4. 4%, peanuts = 2.3 % and seeds = 1.3 %. The data show a clear northern (Sweden: mean intake = 0.15 g/d, average portion size = 15.1 g/d) to southern (Spain: mean intake = 2.99 g/d, average portion size = 34.7 g/d) European gradient of whole tree nut intake. The three most popular tree nuts were walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts, respectively. In general, tree nuts were more widely consumed than peanuts or seeds. In subjects reporting intake, men consumed a significantly higher average portion size of tree nuts (28.5 v. 23.1 g/d, P<0.01) and peanuts (46.1 v. 35.1 g/d, P<0.01) per day than women. These data may be useful in devising research initiatives and health policy strategies based on the intake of this food group.

Abstract OBJECTIVE This study aimed at analyzing the current state of knowledge on clinical reasoning in undergraduate nursing education. METHODS A systematic scoping review through a search strategy applied to the MEDLINE database, and an analysis of the material recovered by extracting data done by two independent reviewers. The extracted data were analyzed and synthesized in a narrative manner. RESULTS From the 1380 citations retrieved in the search, 23 were kept for review and their contents were summarized into five categories: 1) the experience of developing critical thinking/clinical reasoning/decision-making process; 2) teaching strategies related to the development of critical thinking/clinical reasoning/decision-making process; 3) measurement of variables related to the critical thinking/clinical reasoning/decision-making process; 4) relationship of variables involved in the critical thinking/clinical reasoning/decision-making process; and 5) theoretical development models of critical thinking/clinical reasoning/decision-making process for students. CONCLUSION The biggest challenge for developing knowledge on teaching clinical reasoning seems to be finding consistency between theoretical perspectives on the development of clinical reasoning and methodologies, methods, and procedures in research initiatives in this field.

This document summarizes the discussion and findings of a workshop on intelligent compaction for soils and hot-mix asphalt held in West Des Moines, Iowa, on April 2–4, 2008. The objective of the meeting was to provide a collaborative exchange of ideas for developing research initiatives that accelerate implementation of intelligent compaction (IC) technologies for soil, aggregates, and hot mix asphalt. Technical presentations, working breakout sessions, a panel discussion, and a group implementation strategy session comprised the workshop activities. About 100 attendees representing state departments of transportation, Federal Highway Administration, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and researchers participated in the workshop.

This article summarizes the main achievementsof the Multi-Element Transmit andReceive Antennas (METRA) Project, an ISTresearch and technological development project carried out between January 2000 and June 2001 by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Center for Personkommunikation of Aalborg University, Nokia Networks, Nokia Mobile Phones, and Vodafone Group Research and Development.The main objective of METRA was the performanceevaluation of multi-antenna terminals incombination with adaptive antennas at the basestation in UMTS communication systems. 1 AMIMO channel sounder was developed that providedrealistic multi-antenna channel measurements.Using these measured data, stochasticchannel models were developed and properly validated.These models were also evaluated inorder to estimate their corresponding channelcapacity. Different MIMO configurations andprocessing schemes were developed for both theFDD and TDD modes of UTRA, and their linkperformance was assessed. Performance evaluationwas completed by system simulations thatillustrated the benefits of MIMO configurationsto the network operator. Implementation cost vs.performance improvement was also covered bythe project, including the base station and terminalmanufacturer and network operator viewpoints.Finally, significant standards contributionswere generated by the project and presented to the pertinent 3GPP working groups.

The application of adaptive antenna techniques to fixed-architecture base stations has been shown to offer wide-ranging benefits, including interference rejection capabilities or increased coverage and spectral efficiency.Unfortunately, the actual implementation ofthese techniques to mobile communication scenarios has traditionally been set back by two fundamental reasons. On one hand, the lack of flexibility of current transceiver architectures does not allow for the introduction of advanced add-on functionalities. On the other hand, theoften oversimplified models for the spatiotemporal characteristics of the radio communications channel generally give rise toperformance predictions that are, in practice, too optimistic. The advent of software radio architectures represents a big step toward theintroduction of advanced receive/transmitcapabilities. Thanks to their inherent flexibilityand robustness, software radio architecturesare the appropriate enabling technology for theimplementation of array processing techniques.Moreover, given the exponential progression ofcommunication standards in coexistence andtheir constant evolution, software reconfigurabilitywill probably soon become the only costefficientalternative for the transceiverupgrade. This article analyzes the requirementsfor the introduction of software radio techniquesand array processing architectures inmultistandard scenarios. It basically summarizesthe conclusions and results obtained withinthe ACTS project SUNBEAM,1 proposingalgorithms and analyzing the feasibility ofimplementation of innovative and softwarereconfigurablearray processing architectures inmultistandard settings.

La perdurabilidad y la estrategia son temas que influyen de manera significativa en los sectores productivos. Los grupos de investigación, como eje principal de la ciencia, tecnología e innovación no son ajenos esto. Es así que requieren fortalecer su estructura logrando desempeño superior y entenderse como empresas. Esta investigación busca diseñar, para los factores de talento humano y productividad, un escenario deseado y sus estrategias de dirección para favorecer la perdurabilidad de los grupos privados de investigación en salud. La hipótesis planteada a partir de la cual se realizó el análisis es que los grupos de investigación privados, tienen mayores amenazas para perdurar porque no cuentan con una estructura propia de talento humano financiada o con soporte estructural de procesos para competir por las iniciativas de investigación disponibles. Esta hipótesis se aborda para los grupos privados de investigación que pertenecen al Programa Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Salud, área del conocimiento en ciencias de la salud y a través de la pregunta: ¿Cuáles pueden ser los escenarios posibles para lograr la perdurabilidad de los grupos privados de investigación en salud, a partir de estrategias relacionadas con los factores de talento humano y productividad? El desarrollo se hizo a través de 2 fases: Un estudio piloto donde se exploró el sector estratégico a través de las herramientas de prospectiva: MICMAC y SMIC y la fase de intervención a través de una metodología conjugada entre aplicación de AESE, un análisis DEA y una simulación de los escenarios encontrados y deseados.
