Catholic intermarriages in Australia : attitudes to children, identity and sharing household responsibilities

A cursory glance of the human history shows a changing view about marriage on various aspects and levels. One of which is the level of people’s exploration leading to marriage with a spouse that may have different articles of faith.

This study’s focal concern is on Australia’s Catholics’ and Christians’ interfaith marriages, and its level of influence on attitudes to children, identity, and sharing household responsibilities. Expectations are predetermined from both parties but it can be discerned that with sound values, relationships can be rockbed strong.

Raising a family for two individuals with distinct spiritual formation can bring multidisciplinary results. It may be a source of inspiration not only for children seeing their parents respecting each other’s belief— for the love of fellow, own children, and especially the love that has flourished through the union of faith.

Democratically grounded cosmopolitanism: Iraqi refugees in Australia since 2003

This study explored the socio-political attitudes and behaviours of a sample group of Iraqi refugees who were given protection in Australia after 2003. It was found that this group are disconnected and at times alienated by the socio-political sphere in the country.

Learning to be literate : issues of pedagogy for recently arrived refugee youth in Australia

This paper focuses on issues of access to productive literacy learning as part of socially just schooling for recently arrived refugee youth within Australia. It argues that a sole reliance on traditional ESL pedagogy is failing this vulnerable group of students, who differ significantly from past refugees who have settled in Australia. Many have been ‘placeless’ for some time, are likely to have received at best an interrupted education before arriving in Australia, and may have experienced signification trauma (Christie & Sidhu, 2006; Cottone, 2004; Miller, Mitchell, & Brown, 2005). Australian Government policy has resulted in spacialized settlement, leaving particular schools dealing with a large influx of refugee students who may be attending school for the first time (Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues, 2004; Sidhu & Christie, 2002). While this has implications generally, it has particular consequences for secondary school students attempting to learn English literacy in short periods of time, without basic foundations in either English or print-based literacy in any first language (Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues, 2006). Many of these students leave schools without the most basic early literacy practices, having endured several years of pedagogy pitched well beyond their needs. This paper suggests that schools must take up three key roles: to educate, to provide a site for the development of civic responsibility, and to act as a site for welfare with responsibility. As a system, our department needs to work out what can we do for 17-18 year olds that are coming into our school system in year 10 without more than 1-2 years of education. Wellbeing of Australians : carer health and wellbeing

This Report concerns the subjective wellbeing of carers in Australia. It is the product of a partnership between Carers Australia, Australian Unity, and Deakin University. All three partners were involved in all stages of the project as planning the logistics, designing the questionnaire and composing the report. Data analysis was undertaken by Deakin University while the logistics of questionnaire mailout was managed by Australian Unity and Carers Australia. The actual mailing took place from each of the state/territory Carers Associations, who used their own databases to print and affix the addresses of their members to the envelopes. Three major outcome measures have been used. The first is the Personal Wellbeing Index, which is our standard measure of wellbeing. The Index score is the average level of satisfaction across seven aspects of personal life – health, personal relationships, safety, standard of living, achieving in life, community connectedness, and future security. The other two outcome measures are sub-scales taken from the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (Lovibond and Lovibond, 1995). This is a very well regarded scale and the sub-scales of Depression and Stress have been used for this study. A total of 10,939 questionnaires were distributed and 4,107 were returned in time for processing. This constitutes a 37.6% response rate.

Beyond crisis: re-imagining science education

Science education is in crisis, which is evidenced by the increasing negative attitudes to Science by secondary school students and decreasing participation in post compulsory Science subjects. There is a need for re-imagining science by adopting contextual learning.

Hope

In his second documentary on the trials of refugees to Australia, Steve Thomas tells the story of a maritime tragedy in October 2001. Amal Basry, (Amal means Hope) an Iraqi passenger on a people smuggling boat called Siev X destined for Australia, tells how it sank between Indonesia and Australia. Out of the 400 people crowded on the boat, 350 people drowned. As a survivor she fights to ensure that the disaster is not forgotten and to reunite her family. She tells of her terrible ordeal and her new life in Australia reunited with her husband and two sons.

Refugee : a recipe in six steps (2004)- Documenting the hidden

The research involved the production of a documentary and exegesis, arguing that to emphasise the importance of the indexical image in documentary is to overlook the active involvement of viewers, who don't need to see reality in order to infer that a given film is making arguments about reality.

Questioning deterrence policies in the mandatory detainment of asylum seekers

This thesis examined Australia's policy of mandatory detention of asylum seekers which is based on the theoretical premises that they are rational actors who have choices, and that mandatory detention will serve as a deterrent. Interviews with asylum seekers did not support these underlying assumptions, suggesting that a re-examination of Australia's policies is required. The professional portfolio evaluates the Ward & Hudson (1998) model of the offending child molestation process which is believed to account for the differences in goals, affective states and planning among sexual offenders, and consequently determine an individual's treatment needs. Four case studies are presented and analysed.
