This paper elaborates the approach used by the Applied Data Mining Research Group (ADMRG) for the Social Event Detection (SED) Tasks of the 2013 MediaEval Benchmark. We extended the constrained clustering algorithm to apply to the first semi-supervised clustering task, and we compared several classifiers with Latent Dirichlet Allocation as feature selector in the second event classification task. The proposed approach focuses on scalability and efficient memory allocation when applied to a high dimensional data with large clusters. Results of the first task show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results from task 2 indicate that attention on the imbalance categories distributions is needed.

In this paper, we provide an overview of the Social Event Detection (SED) task that is part of the MediaEval Bench mark for Multimedia Evaluation 2013. This task requires participants to discover social events and organize the re- lated media items in event-specific clusters within a collection of Web multimedia. Social events are events that are planned by people, attended by people and for which the social multimedia are also captured by people. We describe the challenges, datasets, and the evaluation methodology.

With the growing size and variety of social media files on the web, it’s becoming critical to efficiently organize them into clusters for further processing. This paper presents a novel scalable constrained document clustering method that harnesses the power of search engines capable of dealing with large text data. Instead of calculating distance between the documents and all of the clusters’ centroids, a neighborhood of best cluster candidates is chosen using a document ranking scheme. To make the method faster and less memory dependable, the in-memory and in-database processing are combined in a semi-incremental manner. This method has been extensively tested in the social event detection application. Empirical analysis shows that the proposed method is efficient both in computation and memory usage while producing notable accuracy.

The problem of clustering a large document collection is not only challenged by the number of documents and the number of dimensions, but it is also affected by the number and sizes of the clusters. Traditional clustering methods fail to scale when they need to generate a large number of clusters. Furthermore, when the clusters size in the solution is heterogeneous, i.e. some of the clusters are large in size, the similarity measures tend to degrade. A ranking based clustering method is proposed to deal with these issues in the context of the Social Event Detection task. Ranking scores are used to select a small number of most relevant clusters in order to compare and place a document. Additionally, instead of conventional cluster centroids, cluster patches are proposed to represent clusters, that are hubs-like set of documents. Text, temporal, spatial and visual content information collected from the social event images is utilized in calculating similarity. Results show that these strategies allow us to have a balance between performance and accuracy of the clustering solution gained by the clustering method.

This paper outlines the approach taken by the Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technologies laboratory, and the Applied Data Mining Research Group (SAIVT-ADMRG) in the 2014 MediaEval Social Event Detection (SED) task. We participated in the event based clustering subtask (subtask 1), and focused on investigating the incorporation of image features as another source of data to aid clustering. In particular, we developed a descriptor based around the use of super-pixel segmentation, that allows a low dimensional feature that incorporates both colour and texture information to be extracted and used within the popular bag-of-visual-words (BoVW) approach.

Reading comprehension in autism spectrum disorders: The role of oral language and social functioning
Resumo:
Reading comprehension is an area of difficulty for many individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). According to the Simple View of Reading, word recognition and oral language are both important determinants of reading comprehension ability. We provide a novel test of this model in 100 adolescents with ASD of varying intellectual ability. Further, we explore whether reading comprehension is additionally influenced by individual differences in social behaviour and social cognition in ASD. Adolescents with ASD aged 14-16 years completed assessments indexing word recognition, oral language, reading comprehension, social behaviour and social cognition. Regression analyses show that both word recognition and oral language explain unique variance in reading comprehension. Further, measures of social behaviour and social cognition predict reading comprehension after controlling for the variance explained by word recognition and oral language. This indicates that word recognition, oral language and social impairments may constrain reading comprehension in ASD.

Our life is full of stories: some of them depict real-life events and were reported, e.g. in the daily news or in autobiographies, whereas other stories, as often presented to us in movies and novels, are fictional. However, we have only little insights in the neurocognitive processes underlying the reading of factual as compared to fictional contents. We investigated the neurocognitive effects of reading short narratives, labeled to be either factual or fictional. Reading in a factual mode engaged an activation pattern suggesting an action-based reconstruction of the events depicted in a story. This process seems to be past-oriented and leads to shorter reaction times at the behavioral level. In contrast, the brain activation patterns corresponding to reading fiction seem to reflect a constructive simulation of what might have happened. This is in line with studies on imagination of possible past or future events.
