In Bangladesh, wetlands are managed through leasing system traditionally from time immemorial. Recently the Government accepted co-management approach for wetland fisheries management and this approach is being practiced in few wetlands for maximize revenue income. A study was carried out to evaluate trend and impact of co-management in Tanguar haor (a Ramsar site wetland) on fisheries resources and livelihood of resident people in the immediate vicinity of the wetland. In Tanguar haor, conflict between leaseholders and the local community was a common phenomenon in the past. Since 2003 the district administration of Sunamganj has been managing the vast wetland resources, however, local people participation was ignored in haor management system. Average monthly fish catch of fishermen increased by 17% after introduction of co-management system and 7 fish species reappeared after introduction of co-management. Average monthly volume of fish catch has increased from 70 kg to 87 kg. A well-defined management structure has been developed for integration of all people of Tanguar haor which would enable them to raise voice jointly and influence policy in their favour.

The state of global freshwater ecosystems is increasingly parlous with water resource development degrading high-conservation wetlands. Rehabilitation is challenging because necessary increases in environmental flows have concomitant social impacts, complicated because many rivers flow between jurisdictions or countries. Australia's MurrayDarling Basin is a large river basin with such problems encapsulated in the crisis of its Ramsar-listed terminal wetland, the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth. Prolonged drought and upstream diversion of water dropped water levels in the Lakes below sea level (20092010), exposing hazardous acid sulfate soils. Salinities increased dramatically (e.g. South Lagoon of Coorong>200gL-1, cf. modelled natural 80gL-1), reducing populations of waterbirds, fish, macroinvertebrates and littoral plants. Calcareous masses of estuarine tubeworms (Ficopomatus enigmaticus) killed freshwater turtles (Chelidae) and other fauna. Management primarily focussed on treating symptoms (e.g. acidification), rather than reduced flows, at considerable expense (≥AU$2 billion). We modelled a scenario that increased annual flows during low-flow periods from current levels up to one-third of what the natural flow would have been, potentially delivering substantial environmental benefits and avoiding future crises. Realisation of this outcome depends on increasing environmental flows and implementing sophisticated river management during dry periods, both highly contentious options.

El estudio se llevó a cabo en ocho unidades productivas del Sitio Ramsar Moyúa, el objetivo principal fue caracterizar agro socioeconómicamente y ambientalmente las unidades de producción, con la finalidad de coadyuvar en la recuperación o mantenimiento de la calidad de los suelos, agua y la sostenibilidad de los agroecosistemas y del medio circundante. Las variables medidas fueron: características sociales y económicas, condiciones agroecológicas, parámetros físicos y químicos del suelo, manejo agronómico y zootécnico. Entre los principales resultados del estudio se encontró que el manejo y explotación actual de las unidades de producción no mejoran la calidad de vida de los productores, Los recursos naturales están siendo afectados por las prácticas productivas como las quemas agrícolas, utilización de productos químicos y aumento del área agrícola, sin ningún impacto en la rentabilidad productiva. Las condiciones agroecológicas climatológicas como temperatura, horas luz, altura sobre el nivel del mar son las óptimas para el desarrollo de los cultivos que están establecidos excepto para la precipitación de 787 mm anual, siendo un factor de pérdidas de cosecha por sequías. La textura, pH, pedregosidad, profundidad, se encuentran en niveles adecuados, algunos macro y micro nutrientes están bajos para algunos casos debiéndose aplicar enmiendas, el manejo tanto agrícola como pecuario de las unidades de producción no es el indicado, se propusieron alternativas que permitan mejorar los rendimientos sin afectar los recursos naturales agua, suelo, aire y bosque los que deben conservarse para desarrollar la actividad turística sostenible por la cual es reconocido este sitio. El cormorán neotropical (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) es una especie de ave acuática abundante en los humedales de El Salvador. La depredación de peces que realiza en los ecosistemas acuáticos, está generando un conflicto con los pescadores que asocian la disminución de la pesca con la conducta depredadora del ave. Entre abril de 2010 a febrero de 2011, se realizó una investigación tendiente a conocer el estado de la población de P. brasilianus en el Sitio Ramsar Embalse Cerrón Grande, El Salvador. El estudio se desarrolló por medio de cinco censos y recolecta de ejemplares, estos últimos se utilizaron para analizar el contenido estomacal. El máximo de ejemplares contabilizados fue de 28,063 individuos y 3,000 parejas reproductoras. Se recolectaron 266 ejemplares, de los cuales, 207 contenían peces en sus estómagos,cuyo peso individual varío de 2 a 307 g ±52 g.Se encontró un total de 1,078 ejemplares de peces correspondiente a diez especies, cuatro de ellas obtuvieron los mayores valores de abundancia: bagre (Cathorops steindachneri)con 29%, seguido por guapote (Parachromis managuensis) con 25%, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) con 22% y plateada (Astianax aeneus, Roeboides bouchellei) con 21%. ABSTRACT: The neotropical cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) is a species of waterfowl abundant in the wetlands of El Salvador. Fish predation on aquatic ecosystems is generating a conflict with fishermen that associating declining fishing with predatory behavior of this bird. From April 2010 to February 2011, an investigation was conducted aimed at knowing the state of the population of P. brasilianus in the Ramsar wetland Cerron Grande, El Salvador. The study was conducted through counting and collecting of birds, to analyze the stomachic contents. The maximum recorded was 28.063 individuals and 3,000 breeding pairs. 266 birds were collected, on 207 it found fish in their stomachs, whose individual weight ranged from 2-307 g ± 52 g. A total of 1,078 fish specimens was found, from ten species, four of them obtained the highest values of abundance: bagre (Cathorops steindachneri) with 29%, followed by guapote (Parachromis managuensis) with 25%,tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with 22% and plateada (Astyanax aeneus, Roeboides bouchellei) with 31%.

While the Ramsar Convention for the Protection of Wetlands of International Importance was the first habitat-based treaty, much of the recent focus of international attention in the area of freshwater has been on the regulation of watercourses. Attention is only beginning to be given to the interconnectedness of freshwater, habitats and ecosystems. This chapter explores and analyses the context, structure and substantive rules for the couservation and managemet of freshwater, habitats and ecosystems across the complex range of multilateral environmental agreements.

Sundarbans, a Ramsar and World Heritage site, is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world covering parts of Bangladesh and India. Natural mangroves were very common along the entire coast of Bangladesh. However, all other natural mangrove forests, including the Chakaria Sundarbans with 21,000 hectares of mangrove, have been cleared for shrimp cultivation. Against this backdrop, the Forest Department of Bangladesh has developed project design documents for a project called ‘Collaborative REDD+ Improved Forest Management (IFM) Sundarbans Project’ (CRISP) to save the only remaining natural mangrove forest of the country. This project, involving conservation of 412,000 ha of natural mangrove forests, is expected to generate, over a 30-year period, a total emissions reduction of about 6.4 million tons of CO2. However, the successful implementation of this project involves a number of critical legal and institutional issues. It may involve complex legal issues such as forest ownership, forest use rights, rights of local people and carbon rights. It may also involve institutional reforms. Ensuring good governance of the proposed project is very vital considering the failure of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded and Bangladesh Forest Department managed ‘Sundarbans Biodiversity Conservation Project’. Considering this previous experience, this paper suggests that a comprehensive legal and institutional review and reform is needed for the successful implementation of the proposed CRISP project. This paper argues that without ensuring local people’s rights and their participation, no project can be successful in the Sundarbans. Moreover, corruption of local and international officials may be a serious hurdle in the successful implementation of the project.

The Great Sandy Region (incorporating Fraser Island and the Cooloola sand-mass), south-east Queensland, contains a significant area of Ramsar-listed coastal wetlands, including the globally important patterned fen complexes. These mires form an elaborate network of pools surrounded by vegetated peat ridges and are the only known subtropical, Southern Hemisphere examples, with wetlands of this type typically located in high northern latitudes. Sedimentological, palynological and charcoal analysis from the Wathumba and Moon Point complexes on Fraser Island indicate two periods of swamp formation (that may contain patterned fens), one commencing at 12 000 years ago (Moon Point) and the other ~4300 years ago (Wathumba). Wetland formation and development is thought to be related to a combination of biological and hydrological processes with the dominant peat-forming rush, Empodisma minus, being an important component of both patterned and non-patterned mires within the region. In contrast to Northern Hemisphere paludifying systems, the patterning appears to initiate at the start of wetland development or as part of an infilling process. The wetlands dominated by E. minus are highly resilient to disturbance, particularly burning and sea level alterations, and appear to form important refuge areas for amphibians, fish and birds (both non-migratory and migratory) over thousands of years.

This report provides key resource data for the ongoing assessment of the requirement for additional Marine Protected Areas (e.g. FHAs under the Queensland Fisheries Act 1994) in regions of high fish habitat value in northern Queensland from Cape Tribulation to Bowling Green Bay (hereafter referred to as the Study Area). The study also provides baseline information on the coastal wetlands within this Study Area for consideration in the Ramsar site nomination process. The Study Area extends from Cape Tribulation (16o 6’S, 145o 24’E) to Bowling Green Bay (19o 30’S, 147o 24’E) in tropical north Queensland. The project aimed to: 1. document and map the coastal wetland communities of the Study Area; 2. document levels of existing disturbance to and protection of the wetlands; 3. examine existing recreational, indigenous and commercial fisheries resources in the region; 4. evaluate the conservation values of the areas investigated from the viewpoint of fisheries productivity and as habitat for important and/or threatened species for future FHA/MPA declaration.
