This work presents a density functional theory study of the norbornene ROMP metathesis reactions. The energies have been calculated in a Grubbs catalyst model Cl2(PH3)2Ru=CH2. The geometries and energy profile are similar to the Grubbs metilydene (Cl2(PCy3)2Ru=CH2 real model. It was found that the metathesis reaction proceeds via associative mechanism (catalyst-norbonene) followed by dissociative substitution of a phosphine ligand with norbonene, giving a monophosphine complex. The results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data. The dissociation energy of the phosphines is predicted to be 23.2 kcal mol-1.

Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP) of cyclic olefins is a powerful transition metal-catalyzed reaction for syntheses of polymers and copolymers. The key feature of this reaction is the [2+2]-cycloaddition mechanism, with retention of the olefinic unsaturation in the polymer chain and occurrence of living polymerization. With the development of metal-carbene type catalysts for this process, many addressed polymeric materials have been successfully prepared to be employed in several fields of the science and technology. This review summarizes recent examples of syntheses of polymers with amphiphilic features such as block, graft, brush or star copolymers; as well syntheses of biomaterials, dendronized architectures, photoactive polymers, cross-linked or self-healing materials, and polymers from renewed supplies.

The reactivity of the new complex [RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)(3,5-Me(2)piperidine)], complex 1, was investigated for ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene (NBE) and norbornadiene (NBD) in the presence of ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) in CHCl(3). The aim is to observe the combination of PPh(3) and an amine as ancillary ligands concerning the steric hindrance and the electronic perturbation in the properties of the N-bound site when replacing the amines. Thus, the results with 1 were compared to the results obtained when the amine is piperidine (complex 2). Reaction with 1 provides 70% yield of isolated polyNBE (M(n) =8.3 x 10(4) g/mol; PDI = 2.03), whereas 2 provides quantitative reaction (M(n) = 1.2 x 10(5) g/mol; PDI = 1.90) with [NBE]/[Ru] = 5000, [EDA]/[Ru] = 48 and 1.1 mu mol of Ru for 5 min at 25 degrees C. The resulting polymers showed c.a. 62% of trans-polyNBE, determined by (1)H NMR, and T(g) = 32 degrees C, determined by DSC and DMTA. For ROMP of NBD, 1 showed quantitative yield with PDI =2.62 when [NBD]/[Ru] = 5000 for 20 min at 25 degrees C, whereas the reaction with 2 reached 55% with PDI = 2.16 in the same conditions. It is concluded that the presence of the two methyl groups in the piperidine ring provides an increase in the induction period to produce the Ru-carbene species justifying better polyNBE results with 2, and a greater amine(sigma)-> Ru(pi)-> monomer synergism which contributed to the best activation of less tensioned olefin as NBD. Polynorbornadiene and polynorbornene were synthesized via ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with [RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)(amine)] as catalyst precursors, amine = piperidine (1) or perhydroazepine (2) in the presence of 5 mu L of ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) ([monomer]/[Ru] = 5000; 40 degrees C with 1; 25 degrees C with 2). The effects of the solvent volume (2-8 mL of CHCl(3)) reaction time (5-120 min) and atmosphere type (argon and air) on the yields were investigated to observe the behavior of the two different precursors. Quantitative yields were obtained for 60 or 120 min regardless of the starting volumes, either in argon or air, with both Ru species. However, low yields were obtained for short times (5-30 min) when the reactions are performed with large volumes (6-8 mL). In argon, the yields were larger with 2, associated to a faster propagation reaction controlled by the Ru active species. In air, the yields were larger with 1, associated to a higher resistance to O(2) of the starting and propagating Ru species. The different activities between 1 and 2 are discussed considering the steric hindrance and electronic characteristics of the amines such as ancillary ligands and their arrangements with PPh(3) and Cl(-) ions in the metal centers. Polynorbonerne with high molecular weight was obtained via ring opening metathesis polymerization using catalysts derived from [RuCl(2)(PPh(2)Bz)(2) L] (1 for L = PPh(2) Bz; 2 for L = piperidine) type of complexes when in the presence of ethyl diazoacetate in CHCl(3). The polymer precipitated within a few minutes at 50 degrees C when using 1 with ca. 50% yield ([NBE]/[Ru] = 5000). Regarding 2, for either 30 min at 25 C or 5 min at 50 degrees C, more than 90% of yields are obtained; and at 50 C for 30 min a quantitative yield is obtained. The yield and PDI values are sensitive to the [NBE]/[Ru] ratio. The reaction of 1 with either isonicotinamide or nicotinamide produces six-coordinated complexes of [RuCl(2)(PPh(2)Bz)(2)(L)(2)] type, which are almost inactive and produce only small amounts of polymers at 50 C for 30 min. Thus, we Concluded that the novel complexes show very distinct reactivities for ROMP of NBE. This has been rationalized on account of a combination of synergistic effects of the phosphine-amine ancillary ligands. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Copolymers of norbornene (NBE) with norbomadiene (NBD) were obtained via ROMP with [RuCl2(PPh3)(2)(L)] type complexes as initiators (1 for L = piperidine and 2 for L = 3,5-Me(2)piperidine). The reactions were performed using a fixed quantity of NBE (5000 equivalents/[Ru]) for different concentrations of NBD (500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 equivalents/ [Ru]) in CHCl3, initiated with ethyl diazoacetate at room temperature. The presence of NBD in the NBE chains was characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR. Whereas the copolymer microstructure was influenced neither by the NBD quantity nor by the initiator type, the N-n and PDI values were improved when increasing the NBD quantity in the medium. When raising the NBD amount, DMA results indicated increased cross-linking with increasing T-g and E ' storage modulus, as well as the fact that SEM micrographs indicated decreased pore sizes in the porous isolated copolymers. The research described herein relates to studies into the Aqueous Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerisation (ROMP) of bicyclic monomers using ruthenium complex catalysts. Two monomers were synthesised for the purpose of these studies, namely exo, exo-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (7-oxanorbornenedicarboxylic acid) and exo, exo-bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (norbornene dicarboxylic acid). A number of ruthenium complexes were synthesised, amongst them a novel complex containing the water soluble phosphine ligand trist(hydroxymethyl)phosphine P(CH2OH)3. Its synthesis and characterisation are described and its physical properties compared and contrasted to analogous compounds of platinum and palladium. Its peculiar properties are ascribed to a trans-placement of the phosphine ligands. Dilatometry was investigated as a technique for the acquisition of kinetic data from aqueous metathesis reactions. For the attempted polymerisation of 7-oxanorbonenedicarboxylic acid the results are explained in terms of a reverse Diels-Alder reaction of the monomer. The reaction between Ru(CO)Cl2(H2O) and 7-oxanorbonenedicarboxylic acid was monitored using UV/Vis spectrometry and kinetic data retrieved. The data are explained in terms of a two stage reaction consisting of consecutive first order processes. The reaction between 7-oxanorbornenedicarboxylic acid and Ru(CO)Cl2(H2O) or Ru(P(CH2OH)3)3Cl2 was found to produce fumaric acid as one of the major products. This reaction is previously unreported in the literature and a mechanism is proposed.

The presence of paramagnetic species in the aqueous ring opening metathesis polymerizations of the exo,exo-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid monomer with RuCl(3) and K(2)[RuCl(5)H(2)O] compounds was studied using ESR techniques. It was observed that the intensities of the Ru(III) signals in the ESR spectra decrease on the time scale of the induction period so that the ROMP can take place. The intensity of the Ru(III) signal almost disappeared 50 min after reacting with K(2)[RuCl(5)H(2)O] and after 100 mm in the case of RuCl(3). Reactions of the cis-[Ru(NH(3))(4)(H(2)O)(2)](tfms)(3) and [Ru(NH(3))(5)H(2)O](tfms)(3) complexes with the monomer and different organic compounds representing the organic functions in the monomer (furan, norbornene, but-2-ene-1,4-diol and formic, acetic, oxalic and maleic acids) were also monitored by ESR and UV/vis spectra. It was deduced that the organic acids provide the disappearance of the Ru(III) signal. The proton NMR relaxation times of the residual water in D(2)O for reactions with oxalic acid suggested that the presence of paramagnetic ions in the solution decreases along with

Two general strategies for the functionalization of metathesis polymers are presented in this dissertation. Introducing Sacrificial Synthesis, many of the limitations of ruthenium-catalyzed ROMP have been overcome. Here, the living ROMP polymer to be functionalized was turned into a diblock copolymer by polymerizing dioxepine monomers onto the desired first polymer block. The second block was then later removed to leave “half-a-dioxepin”, i.e. exactly one hydroxyl group, at the chain-end. The efficiency of Sacrificial Synthesis is also studied. Thiol groups were also placed by a sacrificial strategy based on cyclic thioacetals. 2-Phenyl-1,3-dithiepin could be polymerized and subsequently cleaved by hydrogenation with Raney-Nickel. The presence of thiol groups on the chain end has been proven by chemical means (derivatization) and by coating gold-nanoparticles. The second strategy, vinyl lactone quenchingv is a termination reaction based on vinyl esters. After a metathesis step, an inactive Fischer-type carbene is formed. Such acyl carbenes are unstable and self-decompose to set an inactive ruthenium complex and the functional group free without changing the reaction conditions. The two compounds vinylene carbonate and 3H-furanone gave rise to the placement of aldehydes and carboxylic acids at the polymer chain ends without the necessity to perform any deprotection steps after the functionalization. The development of those two functionalization methods led to several applications. By reacting hydroxyl-functionalized ROMP-polymers with norbornene acid, macromonomers were formed which were subsequently polymerized to the respective graft-copolymers. Also, the derivatization of the same functionalized polymers with propargylic acid gave rise to alkyne-functionalized polymers which were conjugated with azides. Furthermore, “ugly stars”, i.e. long-chain branched structures were synthesized by polycondensation of ABn-type macromonomers and telechelic polymers were accessed combining the described functionalization techniques.

This study investigates the use of larger foraminifera in determining the biostratigraphy of the Avon Park Formation and the Ocala Limestone in central Florida. Sedimentary rocks of the Avon Park Formation are the oldest exposed deposits in the state of Florida, and together with the Ocala Limestone comprise a part of the confining unit of the Floridan Aquifer, a major source of Florida's water supply. ^ Material from the ROMP 29A core collected by the U.S. Geological Survey was evaluated and compared to previous studies of the biostratigraphy of the formations. The larger foraminifera of the Avon Park Formation were examined in thin section, and those of the Ocala Limestone were free specimens. The larger foraminifera from both units were described and identified, and the biostratigraphy determined. The morphological features of the larger foraminifera of the Ocala Limestone were measured and analyzed at various depths within the ROMP 29A core.^ The Avon Park Formation contains predominantly the shallow-water, conical foraminifera Fallotella cookei, Fallotella floridana, Pseudochrysalidina floridana, Coleiconus christianaensis, Coleiconus sp. A, Coskinolina sp. A, Coskinolina sp. B, Fallotella sp. A, Fallotella sp. B, Fabularia vaughani and larger miliolids. ^ The Ocala Limestone contains a different, deeper water assemblage that included the larger foraminifera Heterostegina ocalana, Lepidocyclina ocalana varieties, Lepidocyclina chaperi, Lepidocyclina pustulosa, Nummulites willcoxi, Nummulites striatoreticulatus, Nummulites floridensis and Pseudophragmina spp. A, B, and C. The age of the Avon Park Formation was corroborated by the occurrence of the biomarker echinoid Neolaganum dalli as Eocene, and the Ocala Limestone also contained Eocene larger foraminifera with Eocene to possibly Oligocene calcareous nannofossils. The distribution of the larger foraminifera of the Avon Park Formation was correlated with the subtidal and peritidal zones of the continental shelf. Analyses of variance showed that the changes in measurements of the morphology in Heterostegina ocalana, Lepidocyclina spp. and Nummulites spp. were correlated with change in the depositional environments.^
