Most quark actions in lattice QCD encounter difficulties with chiral sym-rnmetry and its spontaneous breakdown. Minimally doubled fermions (MDF)rnare a category of strictly local chiral lattice fermions, whose continuum limitrnreproduces two degenerate quark flavours. The two poles of their Dirac ope-rnrator are aligned such that symmetries under charge conjugation or reflectionrnof one particular direction are explictly broken at finite lattice spacing. Pro-rnperties of MDF are scrutinised with regard to broken symmetry and mesonrnspectrum to discern their suitability for numerical studies of QCD.rnrnInteractions induce anisotropic operator mixing for MDF. Hence, resto-rnration of broken symmetries in the continuum limit requires three coun-rnterterms, one of which is power-law divergent. Counterterms and operatorrnmixing are studied perturbatively for two variants of MDF. Two indepen-rndent non-perturbative procedures for removal of the power-law divergencernare developed by means of a numerical study of hadronic observables forrnone variant of MDF in quenched approximation. Though three out of fourrnpseudoscalar mesons are affected by lattice artefacts, the spectrum’s conti-rnnuum limit is consistent with two-flavour QCD. Thus, suitability of MDF forrnnumerical studies of QCD in the quenched approximation is demonstrated.

The phenomenology of a QCD-Pomeron model based on the exchange of a pair of non-perturbative gluons, i.e. gluon fields with a finite correlation length in the vacuum, is studied in comparison with the phenomenology of QCD chiral symmetry breaking, based on non-perturbative solutions of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the quark propagator including these non-perturbative gluon effects. We show that these models are incompatible, and point out some possibles origins of this problem.

Chiral symmetry breaking at finite baryon density is usually discussed in the context of quark matter, i.e. a system of deconfined quarks. Many systems like stable nuclei and neutron stars however have quarks confined within nucleons. In this paper we construct a Fermi sea of three-quark nucleon clusters and investigate the change of the quark condensate as a function of baryon density. We study the effect of quark clustering on the in-medium quark condensate and compare results with the traditional approach of modeling hadronic matter in terms of a Fermi sea of deconfined quarks.

In this communication we present results of a study of chiral symmetry in quark matter using an effective Coulomb gauge QCD Hamiltonian. QCD in Coulomb gauge is convenient for a variational approach based on a quasiparticle picture for the transverse gluons, in which a confining Coulomb potential arises naturally. We show that such an effective Hamiltonian predicts chiral restoration at too low quark densities. Possible reasons for such deficiency are discussed.

We determine the critical coupling constant above which dynamical chiral symmetry breaking occurs in a class of QCD motivated models where the gluon propagator has an enhanced infrared behavior. Using methods of bifurcation theory we find that the critical value of the coupling constant is always smaller than the one obtained for QCD. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

We study QCD with twelve light flavors at intermediate values of the bare lattice coupling. We contrast the results for the order parameter with different theoretical models motivated by the physics of the Goldstone phase and of the symmetric phase, and we perform a model independent analysis of the meson spectrum inspired by universal properties of chiral symmetry. Our analysis favors chiral symmetry restoration.

We propose a model for the quark-antiquark interaction in Minkowski space using the Covariant Spectator Theory. We show that with an equal-weighted scalar-pseudoscalar structure for the confining part of our interaction kernel the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is preserved and our model complies with the Adler-zero constraint for π-π-scattering imposed by chiral symmetry.

A formalism based on a chiral quark model (chi QM) approach complemented with a one-gluon-exchange model, to take into account the breakdown of the SU(6)circle times O(3) symmetry, is presented. The configuration mixing of wave functions for nucleon and resonances are derived. With few adjustable parameters, differential cross-section and polarized-beam asymmetry for the gamma p -> eta p process are calculated and successfully compared with the data in the center-of-mass energy range from threshold to 2 GeV. The known resonances S-11(1535), S-11(1650), P-13(1720), D-13(1520), and F-15(1680), as well as two new S-11 and D-15 resonances, are found to be dominant in the reaction mechanism. Moreover, connections among the scattering amplitudes of the chi QM approach and the helicity amplitudes, as well as decay widths of resonances, are established. Possible contributions from the so-called missing resonances are investigated and found to be negligible.

Chiral-symmetry restoration is usually discussed in the context of quark matter, a system of deconfined quarks. However, many systems like stable nuclei and neutron stars have quarks confined within nucleons. In the present paper we use a Fermi sea of three-quark clusters instead of a Fermi sea of deconfined quarks to investigate the in-medium quark condensate. We find that an enhancement of the chiral breaking in clustered matter as claimed in the literature is not a consequence of the clustering but rather dependent on the microscopic model dynamics.

Using a form of the effective potential for composite operators with a variational approach we show that it is possible to get different directions of the chiral phase transition in QCD. Which one occurs depends on the way the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self-energy is used in the 2-loop term of the effective potential. We must choose the 2-loop term which agrees with phenomenology in each form of the effective potential.
