The study examines the dissertation process. The thesis is based on twenty-three autobiographical stories. They were collected from PhDs who had taken their doctoral degrees at the University of Helsinki. The purpose is to investigate the experiences of these PhD recipients and find out what they recall of the events, traditions, and meanings associated with their PhD studies. An anthology collected from PhDs in the historical sciences, which was published in 1998, was used as reference material. This study begins with a general presentation of the history and values of the university and the traditions of the academic community in Finland. Thereafter, the data and the methodological framework of the study are presented. Attention is paid to the discipline background, sex and age of these PhDs, which may have affected their storytelling. The former studies concerning the academic life together with the experiences of the writers revealed that the process of becoming a PhD graduate is generally considered as an academic rite of passage. The change from student status to becoming a fully accepted professional member of one’s field is real, transforming and at certain points, ritualized. The finding of an inner logic to the doctoral process, which included meaningful turning points, was central to the narrative analysis approach. During the process there were different kinds of struggles and highlights. The family background, university studies and time in employment had directed the doctoral studies of some PhD students enormously. But generally the most memorable and value laden were the phases of actually writing the dissertation, the public examination, and the celebration party in the evening called “karonkka”. The picture that emerged from these various life-stories demonstrated that there was no ivory tower where doctoral candidates live an isolated existence. Everyday cares in ordinary life and tasks in academic life are both demanding and rewarding at the same time. The main point is that the academic community in general and PhD supervisors in particular should concentrate not only on the thesis-writing process their students but also on the doctoral students´ wider life situation. Doctoral students need scientific, financial, and mental support. Somebody must be available to inspire and offer encouragement otherwise the process will be disturbed. The successful completion of the PhD ritual gives the PhD graduate self-confidence and respect but its’ influence on the doctors’ subsequent academic career is diverse. The dissertation process is a personal and unique experience. The aim of the PhD graduation is that this traditional ritual leads to a successful completion and ensures a positive reward for the PhD graduate and the academic community. Keywords: autobiography, narratives, academic traditions, PhD graduates.

Background: Previous research has produced conflicting results regarding the effects of season of birth and age-position on cognitive attainments. In Northern Ireland the school year divides the summer season into two providing an opportunity to evaluate the relative contribution of season of birth and age-position effects. Aims: To investigate the relationship between attainment in literacy skills and month of birth for primary and secondary school pupils and to determine the relationship between motor skills and month of birth in primary school pupils. Sample: One thousand one hundred and twenty four primary school pupils participated, and results for key stage 3 (KS3) English and GCSE English Language, for 3,493 Year 10 and 3,697 Year 12 secondary school pupils, respectively, were obtained. Method: Primary school pupils were individually assessed using standardised reading and spelling tests, as well as tests of motor skill. They were also assessed using a standardised group reading test in their class groups. For the secondary school pupils, the results for two year cohorts, in KS3 English and GCSE English language, respectively, were analysed. Results: For the primary school pupils there was evidence of both a season of birth and an age-position effect on all of the cognitive measures, particularly in the early years of schooling. There was, also, evidence of a significant age-position effect at both KS3 and GCSE in favour of the older pupils. For the younger primary school pupils there was evidence of significant age-position effects on both motor measures. Conclusions: The findings from the present study suggest that month of birth may be related to both season of birth and age-position effects. These effects may be compounded, particularly in the early years of primary school, when summer born children are youngest in their year, as in England. In Northern Ireland, age-position effects are also evident in secondary school public examination results, which may have implications for long-term life choices. © 2009 The British Psychological Society.

In England, drama is embedded into the National Curriculum as a part of the programmes of study for the subject of English. This means that all children aged between 5 - 16 in state funded schools have an entitlement to be taught some aspects of the subject. While the manifestation of drama in primary schools is diverse, in a great many schools for students aged between 11 – 19, drama and theatre art is taught as a discrete subject in the same way that the visual arts and music are. Students may opt for public examination courses in the subject at ages 16 and 18. In order to satisfy the specifications laid down for such examinations many schools recognise the need for specialist teachers and indeed specialist teaching rooms and equipment. This chapter outlines how drama is taught in secondary schools in England (there being subtle variations in the education systems in the other countries that make up the United Kingdom) and the theories that underpin drama’s place in the curriculum as a subject in its own right and as a vehicle for delivering other aspects of the prescribed curriculum are discussed. The paper goes on to review the way in which drama is taught articulates with the requirements and current initiatives laid down by the government. Given this context, the chapter moves on to explore what specialist subject and pedagogical knowledge secondary school drama teachers need. Furthermore, consideration is made of the tensions that may be seen to exist between the way drama teachers perceive their own identity as subject specialists and the restrictions and demands placed upon them by the education system within which they work. An insight into the backgrounds of those who become drama teachers in England is provided and the reasons for choosing such a career and the expectations and concerns that underpin their training are identified and analysed.

ABSTRACT This research study focuses on Fernando Garcia Mercadal (1896-1985) and his work in the context of the Modern project as part of the collective theoretical rationality of the second generation of European Modern architecture. It explores the life and circumstances of the architect, who even though born in 19th century introduced Modern architecture in Spain. Modern architecture (Modern Movement) in Spain covered two decades between 20's and 30's through GATEPAC and a group of rationalists in Madrid that Carlos Flores named “generation of '25”. Fernando Garcia Mercadal, top of his class in 1921 and granted with the scholarship in Rome, belonged to both groups and early in his career he became, along with Josep Lluis Sert, one of the most relevant figures of Modern Architecture in Spain. He was the only member of GATEPAC who was born in 19th century. He frequently published on the magazine “AC” (1931-1937) and on “Arquitecture” magazine since 1920. He organized a series of famous lectures at “Residencia de Estudiantes” (Madrid) between 1928 and 1932 in which Le Corbusier, Mendelsohn, Van Doesburg, Gropius or Giedion took part. He was a member of the constituent meeting of CIAM in La Sarraz in 1928, CIAM II in Frankfurt in 1929 and CIAM III in Brussels in 1930. Mercadal was a teacher at Escuela de Arquitectura de Madrid and the Chief of the Urban Planning, Parks and Gardens Office of the Council of Madrid. He earned his position by public examination in 1932. After the civil war he was disqualified professionally until 1946, when he started working at the Architecture Department at INP until 70's. In 1979 he was elected as an academic member of “Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando” and later died in 1985. These are the well-known facts and even though this research study provides unpublished facts, it focuses on the premises to interpret them. Throughout the historiographical discourse of Spanish Modern architecture there is a tendency to assume a disconnection between the Avant-garde architecture movements in 20's and 30's and International Modern architecture (Modern Movement). The generation preceding the war remained silent in regard to this issue and once the war was over, they contributed to support the disconnection. The origin and cause exceed the frame of this work, even though they are incidentally commented due to its importance. This research study questions the approach explained above, based on the facts and the original sources. Its first hypothesis states that Spanish architecture before the civil war was, under its own circumstances, in tune with European architecture. The most important and original contributions of this research study are the following under my point of view: 1. To highlight the architecture of FGM, before and after the war, leaving behind his reputed withdrawal of Modernity after 30's; 2. To highlight the intense relationship between FGM and other Modern Spanish architects and other European architects sharing the same ideas, providing detailed facts; 3. Study of FGM's work in the context of Modern architecture as a new architecture based on its know-how and the way problems are faced. The process is as important as the result, not so much based on the dermis; with urban planning as the new science and with the development of the new functional programs based on the needs of contemporary society as in Rincón de Goya or Hospital de Zaragoza. Three work methods are used. The first two add a new vision of the critical analysis related to FGM and his work, positioning him in the international context in addition to Spain. The third is used as an instrument to manage and systematize the documentation. The first method applies the generational criteria of Pevsner or Giedion (among others) to Modern architecture in Spain, positioning Fernando Garcia Mercadal as a second generation architect. A critical-comparative analysis of his career and contemporary European architects is made to establish similarities and differences. The second method is complementary to the previous one and studies the international relationships of FGM with other recognised architects that were close to him and their possible influences. At last, in relation to his works and projects, two methods are used. For the complete works, due to the lack of originals, published material found on magazines and books is used as the source. In the case of the five selected buildings, it is complemented with archive search, onsite data collection when possible and the impact on the press at that moment.

In the Brazilian network of psychosocial care, health professionals are important actors in the process of transformation of mental health public policies among various services. In the reality of psychiatric hospitals, one should understand the need to expand the debate about the current context of practices developed. This study aimed at analyzing the process of psychiatric reform and the mental health policy in the State of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) from the profiles and practices of higher-level professionals in two psychiatric hospitals. This is a cross-sectional and descriptive research, with quantitative and qualitative data, conducted in two psychiatric hospitals of RN. The universe of the target population was 95 professionals, taking into account the margin of error of 8%, non-response rate and the inclusion criteria: holding effective link with the institution by means of approval in public examination for, at least, six months, being state or municipal servant; having a minimum weekly workload of 20 hours in service; participating in care and/or activities with patients and families in a direct way. The final sample consisted of 60 professionals. The tool for data collection was a questionnaire with closed and semi-open questions about socioeconomic profile, and mental health policies, practices and training. Quantitative data were tabulated in the statistical software SPSS, and simple and bivariate statistics, chi-square type, was used for analysis by adopting the significance level with the value p<0,05. In order to analyze data, the content analysis of Bardin was used. The qualitative findings obtained with the semi-open questions in Analyse Lexicale par Context d'un Ensemble de Segments de Texte (ALCESTE) were grouped into four thematic axes: Professional action in mental health; Mental health training; Scenarios of psychiatric reform and psychiatric hospitals; Mental health policies and practices: challenges for professionals in hospitals. The profile of professionals has revealed the majority of women (89,7%), nurses (36,7%), aged 50-59 years (42,9%), weekly workload of 40 hours (52,4% ), time of completion of graduation from six to 15 years (57%), and 21,4% reported to have specialization in mental health. Regarding the practices developed in individual care, it was found an association between those who do not build or partially conducts the therapeutic project and those who conduct care related to observation and annotation. In family care, it was obtained care consultation during crisis; and, in group care, recreational activities. In the analysis of thematic axes, it was noted that, despite changes identified in the profiles and practices of higher-level professionals in care services for mental health, with the implementation of new public policies for this field, the findings indicate the confluence of asymmetries and divergences in the actions of the teams in psychiatric hospitals, difficulties in managing services, frequent readmissions, reduced quantitative of available services and equipment, high demand of users, disarticulation of the network of psychosocial care, and the very shortage of skilled human resources to compose these services. Accordingly, the evidenced scenarios partially outline the current political and ideological mismatch of the national process of psychiatric reform that denies the role of care actions conducted within hospitals, although it has not gone far enough with the creation of new services that justify the total extinction of this institution
