Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is playing a very important role in human machine communications. Recent communication systems depend on the brain signals for communication. In these systems, users clearly manipulate their brain activity rather than using motor movements in order to generate signals that could be used to give commands and control any communication devices, robots or computers. In this paper, the aim was to estimate the performance of a brain computer interface (BCI) system by detecting the prosthetic motor imaginary tasks by using only a single channel of electroencephalography (EEG). The participant is asked to imagine moving his arm up or down and our system detects the movement based on the participant brain signal. Some features are extracted from the brain signal using Mel-Frequency Cepstrum Coefficient and based on these feature a Hidden Markov model is used to help in knowing if the participant imagined moving up or down. The major advantage in our method is that only one channel is needed to take the decision. Moreover, the method is online which means that it can give the decision as soon as the signal is given to the system. Hundred signals were used for testing, on average 89 % of the up down prosthetic motor imaginary tasks were detected correctly. This method can be used in many different applications such as: moving artificial prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs due to it's high speed and accuracy.

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) plays an important role in the communication between human and machines. This communication is based on the human brain signals. In these systems, users use their brain instead of the limbs or body movements to do tasks. The brain signals are analyzed and translated into commands to control any communication devices, robots or computers. In this paper, the aim was to enhance the performance of a brain computer interface (BCI) systems through better prosthetic motor imaginary tasks classification. The challenging part is to use only a single channel of electroencephalography (EEG). Arm movement imagination is the task of the user, where (s)he was asked to imagine moving his arm up or down. Our system detected the imagination based on the input brain signal. Some EEG quality features were extracted from the brain signal, and the Decision Tree was used to classify the participant's imagination based on the extracted features. Our system is online which means that it can give the decision as soon as the signal is given to the system (takes only 20 ms). Also, only one EEG channel is used for classification which reduces the complexity of the system which leads to fast performance. Hundred signals were used for testing, on average 97.4% of the up-down prosthetic motor imaginary tasks were detected correctly. This method can be used in many different applications such as: moving artificial limbs and wheelchairs due to it's high speed and accuracy.

Evidence suggests that superior motor performance coincides with a longer duration of the last fixation before movement initiation, an observation called “quiet eye” (QE). Although the empirical findings over the last two decades underline the robustness of the phenomenon, little is known about its functional role in motor performance. Therefore, a novel paradigm is introduced, testing QE duration as an independent variable by experimentally manipulating the onset of the last fixation before movement unfolding. Furthermore, this paradigm is employed to investigate the functional mechanisms behind the QE phenomenon by manipulating the predictability of the target position and thereby the amount of information to be processed over the QE period. The results further support the assumption that QE affects motor performance, with experimentally prolonged QE durations increasing accuracy in a throwing task. However, it is only under a high information-processing load that a longer QE duration is beneficial for throwing performance. Therefore, the optimization of information processing, particularly in motor execution, turns out to be a promising candidate for explaining QE benefits on a functional level.

This paper analyzes effects of different practice task constraints on heart rate (HR) variability during 4v4 smallsided football games. Participants were sixteen football players divided into two age groups (U13, Mean age: 12.4±0.5 yrs; U15: 14.6±0.5). The task consisted of a 4v4 sub-phase without goalkeepers, on a 25x15 m field, of 15 minutes duration with an active recovery period of 6 minutes between each condition. We recorded players’ heart rates using heart rate monitors (Polar Team System, Polar Electro, Kempele, Finland) as scoring mode was manipulated (line goal: scoring by dribbling past an extended line; double goal: scoring in either of two lateral goals; and central goal: scoring only in one goal). Subsequently, %HR reserve was calculated with the Karvonen formula. We performed a time-series analysis of HR for each individual in each condition. Mean data for intra-participant variability showed that autocorrelation function was associated with more short-range dependence processes in the “line goal” condition, compared to other conditions, demonstrating that the “line goal” constraint induced more randomness in HR response. Relative to inter-individual variability, line goal constraints demonstrated lower %CV and %RMSD (U13: 9% and 19%; U15: 10% and 19%) compared with double goal (U13: 12% and 21%; U15: 12% and 21%) and central goal (U13: 14% and 24%; U15: 13% and 24%) task constraints, respectively. Results suggested that line goal constraints imposed more randomness on cardiovascular stimulation of each individual and lower inter-individual variability than double goal and central goal constraints.

Viewed in this way, and allowing for the availability of prior knowledge in the form of a probability distribution over possible states of the world, the choice of a movement plan and strategy for motor control becomes an application of statistical decision theory. This point of view has proven successful in recent years in accounting for movement under risk, inferring the loss function used in motor tasks, and explaining motor behavior in a wide variety of circumstances.

The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of cognitive-motor dual-task training compared with single-task training on balance and executive functions in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Fifteen subjects, aged between 39 and 75 years old, were randomly assigned to the dual-task training group (n = 8) and single-task training group (n = 7). The training was run twice a week for 6 weeks. The single-task group received balance training and the dual-task group performed cognitive tasks simultaneously with the balance training. There were no significant differences between the two groups at baseline. After the intervention, the results for mediolateral sway with eyes closed were significantly better for the dual-task group and anteroposterior sway with eyes closed was significantly better for the single-task group. The results suggest superior outcomes for the dual-task training compared to the single-task training for static postural control, except in anteroposterior sway with eyes closed.

La mémoire n’est pas un processus unitaire et est souvent divisée en deux catégories majeures: la mémoire déclarative (pour les faits) et procédurale (pour les habitudes et habiletés motrices). Pour perdurer, une trace mnésique doit passer par la consolidation, un processus par lequel elle devient plus robuste et moins susceptible à l’interférence. Le sommeil est connu comme jouant un rôle clé pour permettre le processus de consolidation, particulièrement pour la mémoire déclarative. Depuis plusieurs années cependant, son rôle est aussi reconnu pour la mémoire procédurale. Il est par contre intéressant de noter que ce ne sont pas tous les types de mémoire procédurale qui requiert le sommeil afin d’être consolidée. Entre autres, le sommeil semble nécessaire pour consolider un apprentissage de séquences motrices (s’apparentant à l’apprentissage du piano), mais pas un apprentissage d’adaptation visuomotrice (tel qu’apprendre à rouler à bicyclette). Parallèlement, l’apprentissage à long terme de ces deux types d’habiletés semble également sous-tendu par des circuits neuronaux distincts; c’est-à-dire un réseau cortico-striatal et cortico-cérébelleux respectivement. Toutefois, l’implication de ces réseaux dans le processus de consolidation comme tel demeure incertain. Le but de cette thèse est donc de mieux comprendre le rôle du sommeil, en contrôlant pour le simple passage du temps, dans la consolidation de ces deux types d’apprentissage, à l’aide de l’imagerie par résonnance magnétique fonctionnelle et d’analyses de connectivité cérébrale. Nos résultats comportementaux supportent l’idée que seul l’apprentissage séquentiel requiert le sommeil pour déclencher le processus de consolidation. Nous suggérons de plus que le putamen est fortement associé à ce processus. En revanche, les performances d’un apprentissage visuomoteur s’améliorent indépendamment du sommeil et sont de plus corrélées à une plus grande activation du cervelet. Finalement, en explorant l’effet du sommeil sur la connectivité cérébrale, nos résultats démontrent qu’en fait, un système cortico-striatal semble être plus intégré suite à la consolidation. C’est-à-dire que l’interaction au sein des régions du système est plus forte lorsque la consolidation a eu lieu, après une nuit de sommeil. En opposition, le simple passage du temps semble nuire à l’intégration de ce réseau cortico-striatal. En somme, nous avons pu élargir les connaissances quant au rôle du sommeil pour la mémoire procédurale, notamment en démontrant que ce ne sont pas tous les types d’apprentissages qui requièrent le sommeil pour amorcer le processus de consolidation. D’ailleurs, nous avons également démontré que cette dissociation de l’effet du sommeil est également reflétée par l’implication de deux réseaux cérébraux distincts. À savoir, un réseau cortico-striatal et un réseau cortico-cérébelleux pour la consolidation respective de l’apprentissage de séquence et d’adaptation visuomotrice. Enfin, nous suggérons que la consolidation durant le sommeil permet de protéger et favoriser une meilleure cohésion au sein du réseau cortico-striatal associé à notre tâche; un phénomène qui, s’il est retrouvé avec d’autres types d’apprentissage, pourrait être considéré comme un nouveau marqueur de la consolidation.

In studies of prospective memory, recall of the content of delayed intentions is normally excellent, probably because they contain actions that have to be enacted at a later time. Action words encoded for later enactment are more accessible from memory than those encoded for later verbal report [Freeman, J.E., and Ellis, J.A. 2003a. The representation of delayed intentions: A prospective subject-performed task? Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 29, 976-992.]. As this higher assessibility is lost when the intended actions have to be enacted during encoding, or when a motor interference task is introduced concurrent to intention encoding, Freeman and Ellis suggested that the advantage of to-be-enacted actions is due to additional preparatory motor operations during encoding. Accordingly, in a fMRI study with 10 healthy young participants, we investigated whether motor brain regions are differentially activated during verbal encoding of actions for later enactment with the right hand in contrast to verbal encoding of actions for later verbal report. We included an additional condition of verbal encoding of abstract verbs for later verbal report to investigate whether the semantic motor information inherent in action verbs in contrast to abstract verbs activates motor brain regions different from those involved in the verbal encoding of actions for later enactment. Differential activation for the verbal encoding of to-be-enacted actions in contrast to to-be-reported actions was found in brain regions known to be involved in covert motor preparation for hand movements, i.e. the postcentral gyrus, the precuneus, the dorsal and ventral premotor cortex, the posterior middle temporal gyrus and the inferior parietal lobule. There was no overlap between these brain regions and those differentially activated during the verbal encoding of actions in contrast to abstract verbs for later verbal report. Consequently, the results of this fMRI study suggest the presence of preparatory motor operations during the encoding of delayed intentions requiring a future motor response, which cannot be attributed to semantic information inherent to action verbs. Purpose : To establish if visual feedback and force requirements influence SICI.

Methods : SICI was assessed from 10 healthy adults (5 males and 5 females aged between 21 and 35 years) in three submaximal isometric elbow flexion torque levels [5, 20, and 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)] and with two tasks differing in terms of visual feedback. Single-pulse and paired-pulse motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), supramaximal M-wave, and background surface electromyogram (sEMG) were recorded from the biceps brachii muscle.

Results : Repeated measures MANOVA was used for statistical analyses. Background sEMG did not differ between tasks (F = 0.4, P = 0.68) nor was task × torque level interaction observed (F = 1.2, P = 0.32), whereas background sEMG increased with increasing torque levels (P = 0.001). SICI did not differ between tasks (F = 0.9, P = 0.43) and no task × torque level interaction was observed (F = 2.3, P = 0.08). However, less SICI was observed at 40% MVC compared to the 5 and 20% MVC torque levels (P = 0.01–0.001).

Conclusion :
SICI was not altered by performing the same task with differing visual feedback. However, SICI decreased with increasing submaximal torque providing further evidence that SICI is one mechanism of modulating cortical excitability and plays a role in force gradation.

Background: The time synchronization is a very important ability for the acquisition and performance of motor skills that generate the need to adapt the actions of body segments to external events of the environment that are changing their position in space. Down Syndrome (DS) individuals may present some deficits to perform tasks with synchronization demand. We aimed to investigate the performance of individuals with DS in a simple Coincident Timing task. Method. 32 individuals were divided into 2 groups: the Down syndrome group (DSG) comprised of 16 individuals with average age of 20 (+/- 5 years old), and a control group (CG) comprised of 16 individuals of the same age. All individuals performed the Simple Timing (ST) task and their performance was measured in milliseconds. The study was conducted in a single phase with the execution of 20 consecutive trials for each participant. Results: There was a significant difference in the intergroup analysis for the accuracy adjustment - Absolute Error (Z = 3.656, p = 0.001); and for the performance consistence - Variable Error (Z = 2.939, p = 0.003). Conclusion: DS individuals have more difficulty in integrating the motor action to an external stimulus and they also present more inconsistence in performance.
