The symmetric syntax of Japanese complex verbs and Slavic prefixes

We report on a robust symmetry between the Polish and the Japanese sequence of syntactic projections in what superficially looks like different domains, namely verbal prefixes (Polish) and multiple verbs (Japanese). This paralellism strongly supports the thesis about the finegrained sequence of positions in syntax, namely that there exists the functional sequence of syntactic heads (fseq) which is invariantly ordered by UG (see e.g. Cinque (1999)) and the surface differences among particular langauges in the order of elements that instantiate this fseq result solely from movement (not from the variation in fseq itself).

Els sufixos apreciatius: una descripció del problema i una proposta d'anàlisi semàntica

L'objectiu d'aquest article és doble. D'una banda, s'exposen els problemes que planteja l’anàlisi que la morfologia generativa ha proposat per a la sufixació apreciativa, especialment per a noms i adjectius. D'altra banda, es defensa la unificació de dos tipus d'afixos apreciatius que les gramàtiques tradicionals han considerat diferents: els sufixos que s'adjunten a arrels nominals (diminutius, augmentatius i despectius) i els que s'adjunten a arrels adjectivals (anomenats intensius ). Aquest treball es centra, fonamentalment, en les dades del català i es demostra que hi ha raons per suposar que tots els sufixos apreciatius formen una única classe d'afixos. Si bé es discuteixen diversos aspectes problemàtics d'aquests derivats, només es presenta una proposta de solució al de la interpretació semàntica. Es defensa que les diferències en la interpretació semàntica dels derivats es poden deduir de l'estructura lexicoconceptual (ELC) de la base i de l'element d'aquesta ELC que sigui modificat per l'afix

Metric Short Course for the Office of Bridges and Structures, HR-378, 1995

This metric short course was developed in response to a request from the Office of Bridges and Structures to assist in the training of engineers in the use of metric units of measure which will be required in all highway designs and construction after September 30, 1996 (CFR Presidential Executive Order No. 12770). The course notes which are contained in this report, were developed for a half-day course. The course contains a brief review of metrication in the U.S., metric units, prefixes, symbols, basic conversions, etc. The unique part of the course is that it presents several typical bridge calculations (such as capacity of reinforced concrete compression members, strength of pile caps, etc.) worked two ways: inch-pound units throughout with end conversion to metric and initial hard conversion to metric with metric units throughout. Comparisons of partial results and final results (obtained by working the problems the two ways) are made for each of the example problems.

El principal objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una pequeña aportación a la enseñanza/aprendizaje del español como lengua extranjera. La finalidad es que pueda servir tanto a profesores como a alumnos, ofreciendo una exposición de la sufijación apreciativa no solo como un aspecto más dentro de la gramática, sino concediendo al alumno una serie de estrategias que le ayuden a favorecer un aprendizaje reflexivo de la gramática y, en particular, de la formación de palabras. Todo esto unido siempre a aspectos socioculturales, pragmáticos, e incluso relacionados con el elemento intercultural
