Some critical reflections on Michel Foucault's reading of Plutarch's Eroticus (Amatorius)

This aim of this article is to reflect on Michel Foucault's reading of Plutarch's Eroticus in his Histoire de la sexualité, putting emphasis on the fact that, against what it is affirmed by the French thinker, the real debate is not, in the author's opinion, about true pleasure, that obtained by the erastés from his erómenos or that obtained by husbands from their wives, but the need to assign also love and friendship (éros kaì philia) to the conjugal love.

Thomas Mann's Death in Venice or Plutarch's way towards Eros

In Death in Venice Thomas Mann refers explicitly to Plato's Symposium and Phaedrus in order to explain the relationship between Gustav von Aschenbach and Tadzio but he hides that his novel also depends on Plutarch's Eroticus. Why? The aim of this article is precisely to reveal the different reasons for such an attitude. Indeed, Plutarch speaks highly of conjugal love in his Eroticus and this way is not followed by Mann in Death in Venice but, at the same, the German writer finds in this Plutarch's philosophical dialogue all the necessary elements to build his story of masculine love and decides not to manage without it.

The Ismenodora of Plutarch's Eroticus. (Has Western Culture "sexualized" -i. e. "masculinized"- Ethics?)

The aim of this article is to show, by means of an accurate philological analysis of Plautarch's Eroticus, how Western Ethics has been clearly sexualized. Indeed, the specific features of masculine bodies become the suitable ones to define what is really ethical, while the specific features of feminine bodies become in their turn the suitable ones to define what is by no means ethical.

El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre la lectura de M. Foucault del Erótico de Plutarco en su Histoire de la sexualité, poniendo especial énfasis en el hecho de que, en contra de lo que afirma el pensador francés, el centro del debate no es, en opinión del autor, el tema del verdadero placer, el obtenido por el erastés de su erómenos o el obtenido por el marido de su mujer, sino la necesidad de atribuir también eros y amistad (éros kaì philia) al amor matrimonial.

L'objectiu d'aquest article és fer una reflexió crítica de la lectura de M. Fouccault de l'Eròtic de Plutarc en la seva Histoire de la sexualité, posant especial èmfasi en el fet que, en contra del que afirma el pensador francès, el centre del debat no és, en opinió de l'autor, el tema del veritable plaer, l'obtingut per l'erastés del seu erómenos o l'obtingut pel marit de la muller, sinó la necessitat d'atribuir també éros i amistat (éros kaì philia) a l'amor matrimonial.

Oscar Wilde. 'Camma', a severe and hedonic aesthetic correction of Plutarch's ethics

The aim of this article is to present an accurate analysis of O. Wilde's poem 'Camma' by referring it to its Greek model: that Camma both in Plutarch's Amatorius (Eroticus) and Mulierum Virtutes. It is precisely this accurate reading which permits us to verify how Plutarch's Ethics is corrected from the parameters of the hedonism which is peculiar to O. Wilde's aestheticism, thus turning Camma into a symbol of a pleasant life.

Billy Budd: from H. Melville to E. M. Forster, or Plutarch's way to Plató

The aim of this article is to propose and lay the foundations of a Plutarch's way ¿not only his Lives but also his Eroticus- to the Platonic content of Billy Budd by B. Britten with a libretto by E. M. Forster in association with Eric Crozier. Plutarch is not quoted in H. Melville¿s novel, but E. M. Forster¿s good knowledge of the texts by the Greek writer and philosopher makes this hypothesis quite credible

Love in Plutarch: the necessary Platonic correction of Plato

Amb ocasió del simposi internacional dedicat a l'amor a Plutarc, aquest treball fou presentat per mostrar fins a quin punt Plutarc, sobre tot al seu Eròtic i des de paràmetres estrictament platònics, amb l'ajut d'una lògica elemental i alhora rigorosa, es limita a corregir platònicament Plató per tal que éros i philía puguin ser atribuïts també al amor conjugal.

John Addington Symonds. A Problem in Greek Ethics. Plutarch's Eroticus quoted only in some footnotes? Why?

It is certainly astonishing that an innovating study about the Greek pederasty in England like the one by John Addington Symonds does not quote Plutarch's Eroticus -in fact, it is only cited in some footnotes-, if one bears in mind that this dialogue is an accurate philosophical reflection on Greek eros, in which very often significant ethical themes are approached. The aim of this article is just to reveal the different reasons for such an omission.

En Muerte en Venecia Thomas Mann se refiere explícitamente al Simposio y al Fedro de Platón para explicar la relación entre Gustav von Aschenbach y Tadzio, pero oculta que su novela se inspira también en el Erótico de Plutarco. ¿Por qué? El objetivo de este artículo es justamente revelar las razones de este proceder. En efecto, Plutarco elogia el amor matrimonial en el Erótico y éste no es el camino que sigue Mann, pero, al mismo tiempo, el escritor alemán halla en el diálogo plutarqueo todo lo necesario para construir su historia de amor masculino y decide no prescindir de él.

El objetivo de este artículo es, mediante el análisis filológico riguroso del Erótico de Plutarco y de los argumentos de Protógenes, defensor del amor pederástico, mostrar la evidente sexualización de la ética occidental, ya que los atributos propios del cuerpo masculino devienen definidores de una ética saludable, mientras que los atributos del cuerpo femenino definen la bajeza ética.

Per què? L'objectiu d'aquest article és justament revelar les raons d'aquest capteniment. En efecte, Plutarc elogia l'amor matrimonial a l'Eròtic i aquest no és el camí que segueix Mann, però, alhora, l'escriptor alemany troba en el diàleg plutarqueu tot el que necessita per bastir la seva història d'amor masculí i decideix no prescindir-ne.
