The velocity profile in turbulent pipe flow is usually divided into two regions, a wall or inner region and a core or outer region. For the inner region, the viscosity and wall shear stress are the important parameters governing the velocity distribution whereas for the outer region, the wall reduces the velocity below the maximum velocity independent of viscosity. In the present work, a velocity model is proposed for turbulent flow in the wall region of a pipe covering the entire transition from smooth to rough flows. Coupling this model for the wall region with the power law velocity model for the core region, an equation for the friction factor is obtained. The model constants are evaluated by using Nikuradse's experiments in the fully smooth and rough turbulent flows. The model shows good agreement with the friction factor and the velocity profiles obtained by Nikuradse for the transition region of turbulent flow.

An experimental study on drag-reduction phenomenon in dispersed oil-water flow has been performed in a 26-mm-i.d. Twelve meter long horizontal glass pipe. The flow was characterized using a novel wire-mesh sensor based on capacitance measurements and high-speed video recording. New two-phase pressure gradient, volume fraction, and phase distribution data have been used in the analysis. Drag reduction and slip ratio were detected at oil volume fractions between 10 and 45% and high mixture Reynolds numbers, and with water as the dominant phase. Phase-fraction distribution diagrams and cross-sectional imaging of the flow suggested the presence of a higher amount of water near to the pipe wall. Based on that, a phenomenology for explaining drag reduction in dispersed flow in a flow situation where slip ratio is significant is proposed. A simple phenomenological model is developed and the agreement between model predictions and data, including data from the literature, is encouraging. A hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian approach is employed to simulate heavy particle dispersion in turbulent pipe flow. The mean flow is provided by the Eulerian simulations developed by mean of JetCode, whereas the fluid fluctuations seen by particles are prescribed by a stochastic differential equation based on normalized Langevin. The statistics of particle velocity are compared to LES data which contain detailed statistics of velocity for particles with diameter equal to 20.4 µm. The model is in good agreement with the LES data for axial mean velocity whereas rms of axial and radial velocities should be adjusted.

In this work, we use large eddy simulations (LES) and Lagrangian tracking to study the influence of gravity on particle statistics in a fully developed turbulent upward/downward flow in a vertical channel and pipe at matched Kàrmàn number. Only drag and gravity are considered in the equation of motion for solid particles, which are assumed to have no influence on the flow field. Particle interactions with the wall are fully elastic. Our findings obtained from the particle statistics confirm that: (i) the gravity seems to modify both the quantitative and qualitative behavior of the particle distribution and statistics of the particle velocity in wall normal direction; (ii) however, only the quantitative behavior of velocity particle in streamwise direction and the root mean square of velocity components is modified; (iii) the statistics of fluid and particles coincide very well near the wall in channel and pipe flow with equal Kàrmàn number; (iv) pipe curvature seems to have quantitative and qualitative influence on the particle velocity and on the particle concentration in wall normal direction.

Using coherent light interrogating a turbid object perturbed by a focused ultrasound (US) beam, we demonstrate localized measurement of dynamics in the focal region, termed the region-of-interest (ROI), from the decay of the modulation in intensity autocorrelation of light. When the ROI contains a pipe flow, the decay is shown to be sensitive to the average flow velocity from which the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of the scattering centers in the flow can be estimated. While the MSD estimated is seen to be an order of magnitude higher than that obtainable through the usual diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) without the US, it is seen to be more accurate as verified by the volume flow estimated from it. It is further observed that, whereas the MSD from the localized measurement grows with time as tau(alpha) with alpha approximate to 1.65, without using the US, a is seen to be much less. Moreover, with the local measurement, this super-diffusive nature of the pipe flow is seen to persist longer, i.e., over a wider range of initial tau, than with the unassisted DWS. The reason for the super-diffusivity of flow, i.e., alpha < 2, in the ROI is the presence of a fluctuating (thermodynamically nonequilibrium) component in the dynamics induced by the US forcing. Beyond this initial range, both methods measure MSDs that rise linearly with time, indicating that ballistic and near-ballistic photons hardly capture anything beyond the background Brownian motion. The Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) technique possesses great potential in monitoring widely exiting industrial two/multi-phase flow. For vertical pipe flow and inclined pipe flow, some application studies with exciting results have been reported, but there is rarely a paper regarding the application of ERT to horizontal gas/liquid pipe flow. This paper addresses this issue and proposes a smart method, Liquid Level Detection method, to conventional ERT system. The enhanced ERT system using the new method can monitor horizontal pipe flow effectively and its application is no longer restricted by the flow conditions. Some experimental results from monitoring an air/water slug pipe flow are presented.

The pipe flow of a viscous-oil-gas-water mixture such as that involved in heavy oil production is a rather complex thereto-fluid dynamical problem. Considering the complexity of three-phase flow, it is of fundamental importance the introduction of a flow pattern classification tool to obtain useful information about the flow structure. Flow patterns are important because they indicate the degree of mixing during flow and the spatial distribution of phases. In particular, the pressure drop and temperature evolution along the pipe is highly dependent on the spatial configuration of the phases. In this work we investigate the three-phase water-assisted flow patterns, i.e. those configurations where water is injected in order to reduce friction caused by the viscous oil. Phase flow rates and pressure drop data from previous laboratory experiments in a horizontal pipe are used for flow pattern identification by means of the 'support vector machine' technique (SVM).
