Tutkimuksen teoreettinen osa on tehty kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteellaja empiirinen aineisto kerättiin sähköpostikyselynä. EMAS -asetus otettiin käyttöön vuonna 1993. Asetuksessa määritellään ympäristöhallintajärjestelmän osa-alueet yksityiskohtaisesti. Mukana olevien yritysten mielestä järjestelmä on helppo ottaa käyttöön ja suurin osa EMAS -yrityksistä kokee hyötyvänsä osallistumisestaan järjestelmään. Tärkeimmäksi hyödyksi koettiin ympäristöhyödyt sekä parantunut yrityskuva. Yritykset kokivat järjestelmän heikkoutena viranomaisten tuen puutteen. Yhdysvaltain Environmental Protection Agency:n Performance Track -järjestelmä esiteltiin vuonna 2000. Järjestelmän osallistumiskriteerit ovat haastavia. Mukana olevat yritykset kokevat hyötyvänsäjärjestelmästä. Eniten mukana olevat yritykset arvostavat julkisuuskuvan parantumista, ympäristöhyötyjä sekä taloudellisia hyötyjä. Yhdysvalloissa pidettiin myös tärkeänä hyvää suhdetta ympäristöviranomaisiin. Heikkoutena koettiin järjestelmän vähäinen tunnettuus. Euroopassa vapaaehtoisia ympäristönhallintajärjestelmiä käyttävien yritysten tulisi viranomaisten avulla verkostoitua. Yhdysvalloissa tulisi kehittää ympäristöraportin todentamista.

This report is a supplement to one issued in late summer 1986 which covered construction on U.S. 71, in Buena Vista County Iowa. The work involved rehabilitation of an older 20 feet wide pavement by placing a four inch thick bonded concrete overlay monolithically with two feet of widening on each side. The work was performed on one lane at a time while construction traffic and limited public traffic used the adjacent traffic lane. When work on the first lane was complete traffic was moved onto it and rehabilitation was completed on the second lane. This report covers the condition of the rehabilitated roadway in May 1987 after the first winter. The condition is described by visual observations, core conditions, and various test results including core compressive strength, direct shear tests on cores for bond strength, profilometer results and delamtect test results.

A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For t (t) over bar events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average track-reconstruction efficiency for promptly-produced charged particles with transverse momenta of p(T) > 0.9GeV is 94% for pseudorapidities of vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.9 and 85% for 0.9 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5. The inefficiency is caused mainly by hadrons that undergo nuclear interactions in the tracker material. For isolated muons, the corresponding efficiencies are essentially 100%. For isolated muons of p(T) = 100GeV emitted at vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.4, the resolutions are approximately 2.8% in p(T), and respectively, 10 m m and 30 mu m in the transverse and longitudinal impact parameters. The position resolution achieved for reconstructed primary vertices that correspond to interesting pp collisions is 10-12 mu m in each of the three spatial dimensions. The tracking and vertexing software is fast and flexible, and easily adaptable to other functions, such as fast tracking for the trigger, or dedicated tracking for electrons that takes into account bremsstrahlung.

We tested the assumption that ego depletion would affect the sprint start in a sample of N = 38 athletes without track and field experience in an experiment by applying a mixed between- (depletion vs. non-depletion) within- (T1: before manipulation of ego depletion vs. T2: after manipulation of ego depletion) subjects design. We assumed that ego depletion would increase the possibility for a false start, as regulating the impulse to initiate the sprinting movement too soon before the starting signal requires self-control. In line with our assumption, we found a significant interaction as there was only a significant increase in the number of false starts from T1 to T2 for the depletion group while this was not the case for the non-depletion group. We conclude that ego depletion has a detrimental influence on the sprint start in athletes without track and field experience.

The top velocity of high-speed trains is generally limited by the ability to supply the proper amount of energy through the pantograph-catenary interface. The deterioration of this interaction can lead to the loss of contact, which interrupts the energy supply and originates arcing between the pantograph and the catenary, or to excessive contact forces that promote wear between the contacting elements. Another important issue is assessing on how the front pantograph influences the dynamic performance of the rear one in trainsets with two pantographs. In this work, the track and environmental conditions influence on the pantograph-catenary is addressed, with particular emphasis in the multiple pantograph operations. These studies are performed for high speed trains running at 300 km/h with relation to the separation between pantographs. Such studies contribute to identify the service conditions and the external factors influencing the contact quality on the overhead system. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work presents the development of a low cost sensor device for the diagnosis of breast cancer in point-of-care, made with new synthetic biomimetic materials inside plasticized poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, membranes, for subsequent potentiometric detection. This concept was applied to target a conventional biomarker in breast cancer: Breast Cancer Antigen (CA15-3). The new biomimetic material was obtained by molecularly-imprinted technology. In this, a plastic antibody was obtained by polymerizing around the biomarker that acted as an obstacle to the growth of the polymeric matrix. The imprinted polymer was specifically synthetized by electropolymerization on an FTO conductive glass, by using cyclic voltammetry, including 40 cycles within -0.2 and 1.0 V. The reaction used for the polymerization included monomer (pyrrol, 5.0×10-3 mol/L) and protein (CA15-3, 100U/mL), all prepared in phosphate buffer saline (PBS), with a pH of 7.2 and 1% of ethylene glycol. The biomarker was removed from the imprinted sites by proteolytic action of proteinase K. The biomimetic material was employed in the construction of potentiometric sensors and tested with regard to its affinity and selectivity for binding CA15-3, by checking the analytical performance of the obtained electrodes. For this purpose, the biomimetic material was dispersed in plasticized PVC membranes, including or not a lipophilic ionic additive, and applied on a solid conductive support of graphite. The analytical behaviour was evaluated in buffer and in synthetic serum, with regard to linear range, limit of detection, repeatability, and reproducibility. This antibody-like material was tested in synthetic serum, and good results were obtained. The best devices were able to detect 5 times less CA15-3 than that required in clinical use. Selectivity assays were also performed, showing that the various serum components did not interfere with this biomarker. Overall, the potentiometric-based methods showed several advantages compared to other methods reported in the literature. The analytical process was simple, providing fast responses for a reduced amount of analyte, with low cost and feasible miniaturization. It also allowed the detection of a wide range of concentrations, diminishing the required efforts in previous sample pre-treating stages.

During drilling operation, cuttings are produced downhole and must be removed to avoid issues which can lead to Non Productive Time (NPT). Most of stuck pipe and then Bottom-Hole Assembly (BHA) lost events are hole cleaned related. There are many parameters which help determine hole cleaning conditions, but a proper selection of the key parameters will facilitate monitoring hole cleaning conditions and interventions. The aim of Hole Cleaning Monitoring is to keep track of borehole conditions including hole cleaning efficiency and wellbore stability issues during drilling operations. Adequate hole cleaning is the one of the main concerns in the underbalanced drilling operations especially for directional and horizontal wells. This dissertation addresses some hole cleaning fundamentals which will act as the basis for recommendation practice during drilling operations. Understand how parameters such as Flowrate, Rotation per Minute (RPM), Rate of Penetration (ROP) and Mud Weight are useful to improve the hole cleaning performance and how Equivalent Circulate Density (ECD), Torque & Drag (T&D) and Cuttings Volumes coming from downhole help to indicate how clean and stable the well is. For case study, hole cleaning performance or cuttings volume removal monitoring, will be based on real-time measurements of the cuttings volume removal from downhole at certain time, taking into account Flowrate, RPM, ROP and Drilling fluid or Mud properties, and then will be plotted and compared to the volume being drilled expected. ECD monitoring will dictate hole stability conditions and T&D and Cuttings Volume coming from downhole monitoring will dictate how clean the well is. T&D Modeling Software provide theoretical calculated T&D trends which will be plotted and compared to the real-time measurements. It will use the measured hookloads to perform a back-calculation of friction factors along the wellbore.

Several studies (on an inclined platform or with special shoes) have reported improved jump performance when the ankle was in a dorsiflexion (DF) position. The present study aims to test whether shoes inducing moderate DF modify vertical jump performance and energy cost. Twenty-one young, healthy female subjects (30 +/- 6 yr, 58 +/- 6 kg, O2max 45 +/- 3 mLxkg-1xmin-1, mean +/- SD) participated in the study. Jump performance was tested with subjects either wearing 4 degrees DF or standard (S) shoes. The jump tests (performed on a force platform) consisted of squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), and continuous jumps (CJ) during 15 seconds. Measured parameters were jump height, speed at take off, and maximal and average power. Oxygen uptake was measured on a treadmill while subjects ran at 95% of the anaerobic threshold during a 7-minute steady-state period. As compared with S shoes, DF shoes significantly improved the height of SJ (31 +/- 4 cm vs. 34 +/- 4 cm, p = 0.0001), CMJ (32 +/- 4 cm vs. 34 +/- 4 cm, p = 0.0004), and CJ (17.5 +/- 4.2 cm vs. 22.0 +/- 6.0 cm, p = 0.0001). Speed at take off was also significantly higher. Mean power significantly increased in SJ and CJ but not in CMJ. Oxygen uptake was not different between conditions (p = 0.40). Dorsiflexion shoes induce a significant increase in jump performance. These results are in accordance with the concept that a DF of the ankle may induce an increase of the length and strength of the triceps surae (higher torque). However, wearing DF shoes did not require more energy during running. Dorsiflexion shoes could be used to increase jump performance in several sports such as volleyball in which jump height is essential.

The purpose of performance measures in planning operations is to identify and track meaningful, quantifiable measures that reflect progress toward the goals of the plan. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has already adopted performance measures in a number of operational areas, including highway maintenance, highway safety, public transportation, and aeronautics. This report is an initial effort to utilize performance measures for transportation system planning. The selected measures provide a cross-section of system performance indicators across three selected transportation planning goals (safety, efficiency, and quality of life) and five transportation modes (highways/bridges, public transit, railroads, aviation, and pedestrian/bicycle). These performance measures are exploratory in nature, and constitute a first attempt to apply performance measures in the context of a statewide, multimodal transportation plan from the Iowa DOT. As such, the set of performance measures that the Iowa DOT uses for planning will change over time as more is learned about the application of such measures. The performance measures explained in this document were developed through consultation with Iowa DOT modal staff (aviation, railroads, highways, public transportation, and pedestrian/bicycle) and the Office of Traffic and Safety. In addition, faculty and staff at the Iowa State University Center for Transportation Research and Education were consulted about performance measurement and data within their areas of expertise.

Training and competition in major track-and-field events, and for many team or racquet sports, often require the completion of maximal sprints in hot (>30 °C) ambient conditions. Enhanced short-term (<30 s) power output or single-sprint performance, resulting from transient heat exposure (muscle temperature rise), can be attributed to improved muscle contractility. Under heat stress, elevations in skin/core temperatures are associated with increased cardiovascular and metabolic loads in addition to decreasing voluntary muscle activation; there is also compelling evidence to suggest that large performance decrements occur when repeated-sprint exercise (consisting of brief recovery periods between sprints, usually <60 s) is performed in hot compared with cool conditions. Conversely, poorer intermittent-sprint performance (recovery periods long enough to allow near complete recovery, usually 60-300 s) in hotter conditions is solely observed when exercise induces marked hyperthermia (core temperature >39 °C). Here we also discuss strategies (heat acclimatization, precooling, hydration strategies) employed by "sprint" athletes to mitigate the negative influence of higher environmental temperatures.
