Surface pollen assemblages and their relationhips with the modern vegetation and climate provide a foundation for investigating palaeo-environment conditions by fossil pollen analysis. A promising trend of palynology is to link pollen data more closely with ecology. In this study, I summarized the characteristics of surface pollen assemblages and their quantitative relation with the vegetation and climate of the typical ecological regions in northern China, based on surface pollen analysis of 205 sites and investigating of modern vegetation and climate. The primary conclusions are as follows:The differences in surface pollen assemblages for different vegetation regions are obvious. In the forest communities, the arboreal pollen percentages are more than 30%, herbs less than 50% and shrubs less than 10%; total pollen concentrations are more than 106 grains/g. In the steppe communities, arboreal pollen percentages are generally less than 5%; herb pollen percentages are more than 90%, and Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae are dominant in the pollen assemblages; total pollen concentrations range from 103 to 106 grains/g. In the desert communities, arboreal pollen percentages are less than 5%. Although Chenopodiaceae and Artemisia still dominate the pollen assemblages, Ephedra, Tamaricaceae and Nitraria are also significant important in the pollen assemblages; total pollen concentrations are mostly less than 104grains/g. In the sub-alpine or high and cold meadow communities, arboreal pollen percentages are less than 30%. and Cyperaceae is one of the most significant-taxa in the pollen assemblages. In the shrub communities, the pollen assemblages are consistent with the zonal vegetation; shrub pollen percentages are mostly less than 20%, except for Artemisia and Hippophae rhamnoides communities.There are obvious trends for the pollen percentage ratios of Artemisia to Chenopodiaceae (A/C), Pinus to Artemisia (P/A) and arbor to non-arbor (AP/NAP) in the different ecological regions. In the temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest region, the P/A ratios are generally higher than 0.1, the A/C ratios higher than 2 and the AP/NAP ratios higher than 0.3. In the temperate steppe regions, the P/A ratios are generally less than 0.1, the A/C ratios higher than 1 and the AP/NAP ratios less than 0.1. In the temperate desert regions, the P/A ratios are generally less than 0.1, the A/C ratios less than 1, and the AP/NAP ratios less than 0.1.The study on the representation and indication of pollen to vegetation shows that Pinus, Artemisia, Betula, Chenopodiaceae, Ephedra, Selaginella sinensis etc. are over-representative in the pollen assemblages and can only indicate the regional vegetation. Some pollen types, such as Quercus, Carpinus, Picea, Abies, Elaeagus, Larix, Salix, Pterocelis, Juglans, Ulmus, Gleditsia, Cotinus, Oleaceae, Spiraea, Corylus, Ostryopsis, Vites, Tetraena, Caragana, Tamaricaceae, Zygophyllum, Nitraria, Cyperaceae, Sanguisorba etc. are under-representative in the pollen assemblages, and can indicate the plant communities well. Populus, Rosaceae, Saxifranaceae, Gramineae, Leguminosae, Compositae, Caprifoliaceae etc. can not be used as significant indicators to the plants.The study on the relation of pollen percentages with plant covers shows that Pinus pollen percentages are more than 30% where pine trees exist in the surrounding region. The Picea+Abies pollen percentages are higher than 20% where the Picea+Abies trees are dominant in the communities, but less than 5% where the parent plants are sparse or absent. Larix pollen percentages vary from 5% to 20% where the Larix trees are dominant in the communities, but less than 5% where the parent plants are sparse or absent. Betula pollen percentages are higher than 40% where the Betula trees are dominant in the communities" but less than 5% where the parent plants are sparse or absent. Quercus pollen percentages are higher than 10% where the Quercus trees are dominant in the communities, but less than 1% where the parent plants sparse or absent. Carpinus pollen percentages vary from 5% to 15% where the Carpinus trees are dominant in the communities, but less than 1% where the parent plants are sparse or absent. Populus pollen percentages are about 0-5% at pure Populus communities, but cannot be recorded easily where the Populus plants mixed with other trees in the communities. Juglans pollen accounts for 25% to 35% in the forest of Juglans mandshurica, but less than 1% where the parent plants are sparse or absent. Pterocelis pollen percentages are less than 15% where the Pterocelis trees are dominant in the communities, but cannot be recorded easily where the parent plants are sparse or absent. Ulmus pollen percentages are more than 8% at Ulmus communities, but less than 1% where the Ulmus plants mixed with other trees in the communities. Vitex pollen percentages increase along with increasing of parent plant covers, but the maximum values are less than 10 %. Caragana pollen percentages are less than 20 % where the Caragana plant are dominant in the communities, and cannot be recorded easily where the parent plants are sparse or absent. Spiraea pollen percentages are less than 16 % where the Spiraea plant are dominant in the communities, and cannot be recorded easily where the parent plants are sparse or absent.The study on the relation of surface pollen assemblages with the modern climate shows that, in the axis 1 of DCA, surface samples scores have significant correlation with the average annual precipitations, and the highest determination coefficient (R2) is 0.8 for the fitting result of the third degree polynomial functions. In the axis 2 of DCA, the samples scores have significant correlation with the average annual temperatures, average July temperatures and average January temperatures, and the determination coefficient falls in 0.13-0.29 for the fitting result of the third degree polynomial functions with the highest determination coefficient for the average July temperature.The sensitivity of the different pollen taxa to climate change shows that some pollen taxa such as Pinus, Quercus, Carpinus, Juglans, Spiraea, Oleaceae, Gramineae, Tamariaceae and Ephedra are only sensitive to the change in precipitation.

M66 an X-ray induced mutant of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) cv. Guardian exhibits broad-spectrum resistance to powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici), yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici), and leaf rust (Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici), along with partial resistance to stagnonospora nodorum blotch (caused by the necrotroph Stagonosporum nodorum) and septoria tritici blotch (caused by the hemibiotroph Mycosphaerella graminicola) compared to the parent plant ‘Guardian’. Analysis revealed that M66 exhibited no symptoms of infection following artificial inoculation with Bgt in the glasshouse after adult growth stage (GS 45). Resistance in M66 was associated with widespread leaf flecking which developed during tillering. Flecking also occurred in M66 leaves without Bgt challenge; as a result grain yields were reduced by approximately 17% compared to ‘Guardian’ in the absence of disease. At the seedling stage, M66 exhibited partial resistance. M66, along with Tht mutants (Tht 12, Tht13), also exhibit increased tolerance to environmental stresses (abiotic), such as drought and heat stress at seedling and adult growth stages, However, adult M66 exhibited increased susceptibility to the aphid Schizaphis graminum compared to ‘Guardian’. Resistance to Bgt in M66 was characterized with increased and earlier H2O2 accumulation at the site of infection which resulted in increased papilla formation in epidermal cells, compared to ‘Guardian’. Papilla formation was associated with reduced pathogen ingress and haustorium formation, indicating that the primary cause of resistance in M66 was prevention of pathogen penetration. Heat treatment at 46º C prior to challenge with Bgt also induced partial disease resistance to Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici in ‘Guardian’ and M66 seedlings. This was characterized by a delay in primary infection, due to increased production of ROS species, such as hydrogen peroxide, ROS-scavenging enzymes and Hsp70, resulting in cross-linking of cell wall components prior to inoculation. This actively prevented the fungus from penetrating the epidermal cell wall. Proteomics analysis using 2-D gel electrophoresis identified primary and secondary disease resistance effects in M66 including detection of ROS scavenging enzymes (4, 24 hai), such as ascorbate peroxidase and a superoxidase dismutase isoform (CuZnSOD) in M66 which were absent from ‘Guardian’. Chitinase (PR protein) was also upregulated (24 hai) in M66 compared to ‘Guardian’.Monosomic and ditelosomic analysis of M66 revealed that the mutation in M66 is located on the long arm of chromosome 2B (2BL). Chromosome 2BL is known to have key genes involved in resistance to pathogens such as those causing stripe rust and powdery mildew. The TaMloB1 gene, an orthologue of the barley Mlo gene, is also located on chromosome 2BL. Sanger sequencing of part of the coding sequence revealed no deletions in the TaMloB1 gene between ‘Guardian’ and M66.

Early establishment of endophytes can play a role in pathogen suppression and improve seedling development. One route for establishment of endophytes in seedlings is transmission of bacteria from the parent plant to the seedling via the seed. In wheat seeds, it is not clear whether this transmission route exists, and the identities and location of bacteria within wheat seeds are unknown. We identified bacteria in the wheat (Triticum aestivum) cv. Hereward seed environment using embryo excision to determine the location of the bacterial load. Axenic wheat seedlings obtained with this method were subsequently used to screen a putative endophyte bacterial isolate library for endophytic competency. This absence of bacteria recovered from seeds indicated low bacterial abundance and/or the presence of inhibitors. Diversity of readily culturable bacteria in seeds was low with 8 genera identified, dominated by Erwinia and Paenibacillus. We propose that anatomical restrictions in wheat limit embryo associated vertical transmission, and that bacterial load is carried in the seed coat, crease tissue and endosperm. This finding facilitates the creation of axenic wheat plants to test competency of putative endophytes and also provides a platform for endophyte competition, plant growth, and gene expression studies without an indigenous bacterial background.

Este trabalho objetivou estudar a fenologia e o acúmulo de matéria seca ao longo do ciclo de vida de Murdannia nudiflora, visando conhecer seu potencial de crescimento. Para isso, sementes dessa espécie daninha foram semeadas em canteiros (5,0 x 3,0 x 0,2 m), cujo substrato constituiu-se de solo de várzea proveniente de áreas de cultivo de arroz irrigado. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de 11 épocas de colheita das plantas (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 e 110 dias após a emergência - DAE). No final de cada época, seis plantas foram colhidas e separadas nos seus componentes vegetativos (pseudocaule, estolão, raiz e folha), determinando-se em seguida a matéria seca. O desenvolvimento do pseudocaule durante todo o ciclo aumentou linearmente. O maior acúmulo de matéria seca total, nas raízes e folhas, ocorreu entre os períodos de 20 a 80 DAE, apresentando ajuste quadrático. A partir dos 80 DAE, observou-se acúmulo de matéria seca de 59% nos estolões, 31,7 e 9,3% nas folhas e raízes, respectivamente, em relação àquele verificado na planta-mãe. A formação das plantas-filhas ocorreu a partir dos 40 DAE; a partir do pico de produção de matéria seca (aos 80 DAE), estas atingiram, em média, 84,8% da matéria seca total da planta. O acúmulo de matéria seca nas plantas-filhas foi semelhante ao verificado na planta-mãe. Naquela, houve tendência de o acúmulo manter-se constante após o ponto máximo de produção.

Quantificar a sombra de sementes gerada por um dispersor, ou seja, a maneira como as sementes são distribuídas em função do tempo que o dispersor as retém e de como este se desloca pelo habitat, é etapa essencial para avaliar os impactos do dispersor na estruturação e funcionamento de populações e comunidades vegetais. Este é o primeiro estudo com o primata S. bicolor como dispersor de sementes e teve como objetivo investigar o padrão de formação de sombra de sementes e sua relação com o padrão de deslocamento da espécie. O deslocamento de quatro grupos de S. bicolor foi monitorado em três fragmentos florestais em Manaus, Amazonia Central. O posicionamento dos animais em um sistema de trilhas foi registrado em intervalos de cinco minutos, ao longo de todo período de atividade, cinco dias ao mês durante o mínimo de 15 meses cada grupo. O tempo de retenção de sementes foi estimado registrando-se o tempo de ingestão, de defecação e o número de sementes de cinco espécies de frutos cultivados ofertados a quatro indivíduos criados em cativeiro. Sombras de sementes foram estimadas através da combinação de dados do padrão de deslocamento com dados do tempo de retenção de sementes. Para cada grupo, foram obtidas a distância média de dispersão e a proporção da área de uso ocupada em uma base mensal, e a relação destas duas variáveis foi verificada através de uma regressão linear simples. O tempo de retenção de sementes variou de 27 a 295 minutos (N = 394), sendo que mais da metade das sementes ficam retidas em até duas horas no trato digestivo, e o número médio de sementes por defecação foi de 3,5 (± 3,7; N = 111). Probabilidades de dispersão de sementes para fora das imediações da planta-matriz ultrapassam 80%, além de incluírem distâncias maiores do que 1 km. Apenas para dois grupos foi verificado que há relação entre a proporção da área de uso e as distâncias de dispersão sendo que para um destes o poder explanatório do modelo foi menor do que 20%. Os resultados indicam que S. bicolor dispersa sementes de forma efetiva e, assim como outros calitriquíneos, pode contribuir para a estruturação e regeneração de ecossistemas florestais.

The physic nut can be propagated asexually or sexually. Using cuttings have been earlier yield and more fidelity characteristics of the parent plant. However, there is less initial vegetative growth. The seeds from the plants have increased genetic variability, are more vigorous and begin production later. To get quality changes, the substrate is an important factor. With that the objective was to taste pre-germinated treatments and different substrate on seeds emergence and quality physic nut seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized, in factorial scheme 6 x 3 (pre-germinated treatments x substrate), 18 treatments and 4 repetition, 8 seeds to each repetition. It was evaluated six pre-germination treatments: T1: witness (without treatments); T2: water immersion for 12 hours; T3: water immersion for 24 hours; T4: mechanical scarification; T5: mechanical scarification + water immersion for 12 hours; T6: mechanical scarification + water immersion for 24 hours, using as substrate: commercial, expanded vermiculite and sand washed. The mechanical scarification was realized opposite the micropyle using sandpaper n. 60. After the pre-germination treatments, the seeds were emergence in plastic cups (200mL) with substrates. We evaluated the characteristics: percentage, beginning and emergence speed index, mean length of plant, diameter of plant stem, SPAD index, fresh and dry shoot and root. The results showed that in seeds of Jatropha do not need pre-germinative treatments; and the use of commercial substrate showed seedling development.

Saurochory (seed dispersal by reptiles) among crocodilians has largely been ignored, probably because these reptiles are generally assumed to be obligate carnivores incapable of digesting vegetable proteins and polysaccharides. Herein we review the literature on crocodilian diet, foraging ecology, digestive physiology and movement patterns, and provide additional empirical data from recent dietary studies of Alligator mississippiensis. We found evidence of frugivory in 13 of 18 (72.2%) species for which dietary information was available, indicating this behavior is widespread among the Crocodylia. Thirty-four families and 46 genera of plants were consumed by crocodilians. Fruit types consumed by crocodilians varied widely; over half (52.1%) were fleshy fruits. Some fruits are consumed as gastroliths or ingested incidental to prey capture; however, there is little doubt that on occasion, fruit is deliberately consumed, often in large quantities. Sensory cues involved in crocodilian frugivory are poorly understood, although airborne and waterborne cues as well as surface disturbances seem important. Crocodilians likely accrue nutritional benefits from frugivory and there are no a priori reasons to assume otherwise. Ingested seeds are regurgitated, retained in the stomach for indefinite and often lengthy periods, or passed through the digestive tract and excreted in feces. Chemical and mechanical scarification of seeds probably occurs in the stomach, but what effects these processes have on seed viability remain unknown. Because crocodilians have large territories and undertake lengthy movements, seeds are likely transported well beyond the parent plant before being voided. Little is known about the ultimate fate of seeds ingested by crocodilians; however, deposition sites could prove suitable for seed germination. Although there is no evidence for a crocodilian-specific dispersal syndrome similar to that described for other reptiles, our review strongly suggests that crocodilians function as effective agents of seed dispersal. Crocodilian saurochory offers a fertile ground for future research.

As galerias ripícolas são habitats com uma grande disponibilidade de recursos alimentares e abrigo para a fauna, estando entre os habitats mais importantes e vulneráveis do mundo. São uma fonte de produção de frutos, o que atrai muitos animais, como as aves frugívoras, que são os principais dispersores de sementes na bacia do Mediterrâneo. O objetivo principal deste estudo foi estudar os padrões de dispersão de sementes por aves na interface galeria ripícola-matriz florestal envolvente (Montado). Foram marcadas com fluorescência plantas-mãe produtoras de frutos, e utilizadas armadilhas para sementes e transectos, para a recolha dos dejetos de aves onde, posteriormente, se detetaram as sementes dispersadas. Constatou-se que a dispersão de sementes e a abundância de plantas-mãe foi superior a distâncias mais próximas da ribeira, diminuindo à medida que esta distância aumenta. A espécie mais dispersada foi Smilax aspera e as espécies com sementes de menor dimensão, foram dispersadas a uma maior distância da planta-mãe, provavelmente devido a este tipo de sementes permanecerem mais tempo no trato intestinal das aves. Os resultados deste estudo apresentam algumas implicações para a colonização da matriz adjacente por plantas produtoras de frutos; ABSTRACT: Riparian galleries are habitats with a large availability food resources and shelter for animals, being among the most important and vulnerable habitats in the world. These zones are a great source of fruits attracting many animals, such as frugivorous birds, which are the main seed dispersers in the Mediterranean basin. The objective of this thesis is the study of seed dispersal patterns by birds, in the riparian gallery and in the surrounding forest matrix (Montado). Fruits of several plant species were used to collect bird droppings and detect fluorescent seeds in those droppings. Fruit abundance and seed dispersal were higher close to the stream, and decreased rapidly with an increase in distance from the stream. From all species, the most dispersed was Smilax aspera and species with smaller seed were found at a significantly larger distance from parents plants than species with large seeds. This can be explained by the fact that smaller seed stay longer in the intestinal tract of the birds. The results of this study present some implications for the colonization of freshly fruit plants from the riparian gallery into the adjacent matrix.

This paper presents a specific kind of failure in ethylene cracking coils coated with anticoking film. It investigates a case in which the coils made of 35Cr 45Ni high temperature alloy failed within two years of operation. The damage occurred due to heavy oxidation in localized regions of the coil resulting in the formation of blisters, which eventually failed by cracking. The mechanism involved was determined by studying the oxidized samples under a scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive system and is attributed to the presence of rare earth metals in the anti-coking film and inherent casting defects in the base alloy. The cerium present in the anti-coking film diffused preferentially to a defect site in the parent alloy thereby resulting in its segregation which further led to embrittlement. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A microcosm system was used to investigate and compare transfers of 14C labeled-1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB), 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in an air-soil-plant system using single grass tillers planted into spiked soil. This study was the second phase of a development investigation for eventual study of a range of xenobiotic pollutants. Recoveries from the system were excellent at >90%. The predominant loss pathway for 14C labeled-1,2-DCB and 1,2,4-TCB was volatilisation with 85% and 76% volatilisation of parent compound and volatile metabolites over 5 weeks respectively. Aquesta tesi doctoral se centra en l'estudi de l'aplicació de pèptids antimicrobians en la lluita contra agents patògens de cultius de plantes d'interès econòmic.L'estratègia sintètica s'ha portat a terme utilitzant metodologies convencionals de síntesi de pèptids en fase sòlida com l'estratègia tridimensional ortogonal Fmoc/tBut/Allyl. Ha calgut fer la recerca de les condicions òptimes per a l'eliminació del grup Allyl i la ciclació. D'entre els pèptids cíclics de 4-10 aminoacids sintetitzats, el decapèptid c(Lys-Leu-Lys-Leu-Lys-Phe-Lys-Lys-Leu-Gln) ha resultat ésser el més efectiu i s'ha pres com a base per al disseny d'una quimioteca de 56 pèptids. Dels resultats obtinguts s'ha sintetitzat una segona quimioteca basada en l'estructura general c(X1-X2-X3-X4-Lys-Phe-Lys-Lys-Leu-Gln) determinada com la que posseix el millor perfil d'activitat. Els pèptids més efectius obtinguts constituixen els primers exemples de pèptids cíclics actius contra E. amylovora i poden ser considerats com a bons candidats pel desenvolupament d'agents antimicrobians efectius en protecció vegetal.

The offspring of parasitoids, Aphidius colemani Viereck, reared on Brussels sprouts and emerging from Myzus persicae Sulzer on a fully defined artificial diet, show no preferences in a four-way olfactometer, either for the odour of the diet, the odour of Brussels sprouts, or the odour of two other crucifers (cabbage and Chinese cabbage). A similar lack of odour preferences is shown when the host aphids are exposed for parasitization (for 48 h) on cabbage, Chinese cabbage or wheat. However, if parasitization occurs on Brussels sprouts, a weak but statistically highly significant response to Brussels sprout odour is observed. Although as many as 30-35% of the parasitoids show no response to any odour, another 35% respond positively to the odour of Brussels sprout compared with responses to the odours of cabbage, Chinese cabbage or wheat of only approximately 10%. An analagous result is obtained when the parent parasitoids are reared on cabbage. In this case, significant positive responses of their offspring to cabbage odour occur only if the 48-h parasitization has occurred also on cabbage. However, with parasitoids from Brussels sprouts parasitizing the aphids for 48 h also on Brussels sprouts, the offspring subsequently emerging from pupae excised from the mummies show no preference for Brussels sprout odour. Thus, although the Brussels sprout cue had been experienced early in the development of the parasitoids, they only become conditioned to it when emerging from the mummy. Both male and female parasitoids respond very similarly in all experiments. It is proposed that the chemical cue (probably glucosinolates in these experiments) is most likely in the silk surrounding the parasitoid pupa, and that the mother may leave the chemical in or around the egg at oviposition, inducing chemical defences in her offspring to the secondary plant compounds that the offspring are likely to encounter.

Growth of the maize (Zea mays) endosperm is tightly regulated by maternal zygotic and sporophytic genes, some of which are subject to a parent-of-origin effect. We report here a novel gene, maternally expressed gene1 (meg1), which shows a maternal parent-of-origin expression pattern during early stages of endosperm development but biallelic expression at later stages. Interestingly, a stable reporter fusion containing the meg1 promoter exhibits a similar pattern of expression. meg1 is exclusively expressed in the basal transfer region of the endosperm. Further, we show that the putatively processed MEG1 protein is glycosylated and subsequently localized to the labyrinthine ingrowths of the transfer cell walls. Hence, the discovery of a parent-of-origin gene expressed solely in the basal transfer region opens the door to epigenetic mechanisms operating in the endosperm to regulate certain aspects of nutrient trafficking from the maternal tissue into the developing seed.
