Three kinds of polymer resin supported Pd catalysts were prepared by mixing PdCl2, with alkaline styrene anion exchange resins[D392 -NH2, D382, -NHCH3, D301R, -NH(CH3)(2)], strongly alkaline styrene anion exchanged resin [201 X 7DVB, -NH+ (CH3)(3)] and alkaline epoxy exchange resin (701, -NH2), and hydrogenating in liquid phase at 1.013 X 10(5) Pa. The hydrogenation of furfural was studied under the reaction conditions such as solvent, temperature. Pd content in the supported catalyst and the amount of the catalyst. The yield of hydrogenation reaction of furfural markedly increased to 100% and the selectivity to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol increased to over 98% by polymer (alkaline styrene anion exchange resins D392, -NH2, D382, -NHCH3) supported palladium catalysts comparing with the yield over 70% and selectivity over 97% by palladium catalyst, in 50% alcohol-50% water or pure water solution at 1.013 X 10(5) Pa. The relationship between hydrogenation and the structures of functional group in the supporting resin was examined by XPS method.

The adsorption of CO on Al(2)O(3), ZrO(2), ZrO(2)-SiO(2), and ZrO(2)-La(2)O(3) supported Pd catalysts was studied by adsorption microcalorimetry and infrared (TR) spectroscopy. Some interesting and new correlations between the results of microcalorimetry and IR spectroscopy have been found. The CO is adsorbed on palladium catalysts in three different modes: multibonded (3-fold), bridged (2-fold), both on Pd(lll) and (100) planes, and linear (1-fold) adsorbed species. The corresponding differential adsorption heats lie in the field of high (210-170 kJ/mol), medium (140-120 kJ/mol), and low (95-60 kJ/mol) values, respectively. The nature of the support, the reduction temperature, and the pretreatment conditions affect the surface structure of the Pd catalysts, resulting in variations in the site energy distribution, i.e., changes in the fraction of sites adsorbing CO with specific heats of adsorption. Moreover, the CeO(2); promoter addition weakens the adsorption strength of CO on palladium. Based on the exposed results, a correctness factor, which considers the percentages of various CO adsorption states, must be introduced when one calculates the Pd dispersion using CO adsorption data.

The hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over supported palladium catalysts has been studied. The palladium catalysts: deactivate as the reaction proceeds due to the HCl formed as by-product. The effect of the addition of sodium compounds has been analysed for the neutralisation of HCl. When NaOH was added to the reaction mixture, no beneficial effect was observed due to the detrimental effect of the alkaline medium on the textural and metallic properties of the catalysts. Doping the support with NaOH prior to impregnation with the metal precursor leads (after calcination and reduction) to catalysts with better activity and tolerance to deactivation, especially those obtained when using PdCl2 as the metal precursor. Low metal dispersion and the capture of chloride by forming NaCl are the: main factors contributing to the: improved catalytic properties. Finally, doping the catalysts with NaOH or NaNO3, after reduction of the metal precursor leads to a moderate increase in initial activity and final conversion, although NaOH impregnation also gave rise to support corrosion and metal dispersion modification. Electron deficient active sites in Pd catalysts, either as films or on supports, are deliberately generated by calcining in O-2 at high temperature followed by the mildest possible reduction (with the reaction mixture itself), and are manifested by a marked shift from multiple to simple exchange in the cyclopentane/D-2 probe reaction.

Initially, pore walls of mesoporous silica SBA-15 with template were modified with chlorotrimethylsilane. Then imidazolium salts were similarly incorporated covalently in the inner pore walls of mesoporous silica SBA-15 albeit without the template. Finally, palladium salts were introduced into the pore channels of the previously processed mesoporous silica via electrostatic interaction. The resulting palladium catalysts demonstrated exceptional activity for the room-temperature Suzuki Coupling reaction in aqueous-organic mixed solvents and good recycling ability for at least 4-6 times.

In order to improve the sulfur resistance of noble metal catalysts in the aromatic hydrogenation of diesel fuel, the alloying effect of non-noble metals with Pd was studied. Toluene hydrogenation over Pd and Pd-M bimetallic catalysts (M = Cr, W,La, Mn, Mo, Ag) on a mixed HY-Al2O3 support was investigated in the presence of 3000 ppm sulfur as thiophene in the feedstock. The results showed that the addition of the second metals strongly affected the activity of toluene hydrogenation, which suggests that the sulfur resistibility of Pd-M bimetallic catalysts is much different from single Pd. La, Mn, Mo and Ag decreased the sulfur resistance of the palladium catalysts. For example, the toluene conversion at 553 K was observed to decrease sharply from 39.4 wt.% on Pd to 1.6 wt.% on Pd-Ag, which is by a factor of 25. One of the important findings in this article is that Cr and W increase hydrogenation activity of Pd catalysts. The reactions occurring on these catalysts include hydrogenation, isomerization and hydrocracking, The addition of the second metals has no noticeable effects on the hydrogenation and isomerization selectivity, but it slightly suppresses hydrocracking reactions. The four typical catalysts, Pd-Cr, Pd-W, Pd-Ag and Pd were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy of pyridine and CO. LR spectra of CO revealed the strong interaction between Pd and the second metal as Cr, W and Ag (or their oxide), indicating that the improvement in sulfur resistance originates from electron-deficient Pd with the addition of second metals. Green oil, which leads to the deactivation of the catalysts used for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene, has long been observed but its formation mechanism is not fully understood. In this work, the formation of 1,3-butadiene, known to be the precursor of green oil, on both Pd(111) and Pd(211) surfaces is examined using density functional theory calculations. The pathways containing C-2 + C-2 coupling reactions as well as the corresponding hydrogenation reactions are studied in detail. Three pathways for 1,3-butadiene production, namely coupling plus hydrogenation and further hydrogenation, hydrogenation plus coupling plus hydrogenation, and a two step hydrogenation followed by coupling, are determined. By comparing the effective barriers, we identify the favored pathway on both surfaces. A general understanding toward the deactivation process of the industrial catalysts is also provided. In addition, the effects of the formation of subsurface carbon atoms as well as the Ag alloying on the 1,3-butadiene formation on Pd-based catalysts are also investigated and compared with experimental results.

Boron-modified Pd catalysts have shown excellent performance for the selective hydrogenation of alkynes experimentally. In the current work, we investigated the hydrogenation of acetylene on boron-modified Pd(111) and Pd(211) surfaces, utilizing density functional theory calculations. The activity of acetylene hydrogenation has been studied by estimating the effective barrier of the whole process. The selectivity of ethylene formation is investigated from a comparison between the desorption and the hydrogenation of ethylene as well as comparison between the ethylene and the 1,3-butadiene formation. Formation of subsurface carbon and hydrogen on both boron-modified Pd(111) and Pd(211) surfaces has also been evaluated, since these have been reported to affect both the activity and the selectivity of acetylene hydrogenation to produce ethylene on Pd surfaces. Our results provide some important insights into the Pd B catalysts for selective hydrogenation of acetylene and also for more complex hydrogenation systems, such as stereoselective hydrogenation of longer chain alkynes and selective hydrogenation of vegetable oil.

The ammoxidation of ethanol is investigated as a renewable process for the production of acetonitrile from a bio-feedstock. Palladium catalysts are shown to be active and very selective (>99%) to this reaction at moderate to low temperatures (150-240 °C), with acetonitrile yields considered a function of Pd morphology. Further investigations reveal that the stability of these catalysts is influenced by an unselective product, and that any deactivation observed is reversible. Interpretation of this deactivation allows operating conditions to be defined for the stable, high yielding production of acetonitrile from ethanol.
