A series of cerium dioxide (CeO2,)/polyimide (PI) nanocomposites were successfully prepared from Ce(Phen)(3) and polyamic acid (PAA) via the solution direct-dispersing method, followed by a step thermal imidization process. TGA and XPS studies showed that the cerium complex decomposed to form CeO2, during the thermal imidization process at 300 degrees C. SEM observation showed that the formed CeO2, as nalloparticles was well dispersed in polyimide matrix with a size of about 50-100 nm for samples with different contents of CeO2. Thermal analysis indicated that the introduction of CeO2, decreased the thermal stability of nanocomposite films due to the decomposition of Ce(Phen)(3) in the imidization process, while the glass transition temperature (T-g) increased obviously. especially nanocomposite films with high loading of CeO2 exhibited a trend of disappearance off, DMTA and static tensile measurements showed that the storage modulus of nanocomposite films increased, while the elongation at break decreased with increasing CeO2 content.

A series of novel ternary polyimide/SiO2/polydiphenylsiloxane (PI/SiO2/PDPhS) composite films were prepared through co-hydrolysis and condensation between tetramethoxysilane, diphenyldimethoxysilane (DDS) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane-terminated polyamic acid, using an in situ sol-gel method. The composite films exhibited good optical transparency up to 30 wt% of total content of DDS and SiO2. SEM analysis showed that the PDPhS and SiO2 were well dispersed in the PI matrix without macroscopic separation of the composite films. TGA analysis indicated that the introduction of SiO2 could improve the thermal stability of the composite films. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that the composite films with low DDS content (5 wt%) had a higher glass transition temperature (T-g) than pure PI matrix. When the content of DDS was above 10 wt%, the T-g of the composite decreased slightly due to the plasticizing effect of flexible PDPhS linkages on the rigid PI chains. The composite films with high SiO2 content exhibited higher values of storage modulus. Tensile measurements also showed that the modulus and tensile strength of the composite films increased with increasing SiO2 content, and the composite films still retained a high elongation at break due the introduction of DDS.

A series of novel polyimide/polydiphenylsiloxane) (PI/PDDS) composite films with different contents of DDS were prepared using sol-gel method. The noncrosslinked PI-DDS and crosslinked PIS-DDS were synthesized through cohydrolysis and condensation between DDS and polyamic acid (PAA) or aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES)-terminated polyamic acid (PAAS). All the composite films have high thermal stability near pure PI. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) study shows that the polysiloxane from hydrolyzed DDS well dispersed in polyimide matrix, without macroscopic separation for the composite films with low content of DDS, while large domain of polysiloxane was formed in films with high DDS content. The microstructure of composite films is in accordance with the transparency of corresponding films. X-ray study shows the PDDS is amorphous in PI matrix. The introduction of DDS into PI can improve the elongation at break and at the same time, the composite films still remained with higher modulus and tensile strength. The density and water absorption of the composite films decreased with the increasing DDS content. The composite films with DDS content below 10 wt % exhibit good solvent resistance.

2,2,'3,3' -Biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2,'3,3'-BPDA) was prepared by a coupling reaction of dimethyl 3-iodophthalate. The X-ray single-crystal structure determination showed that this dianhydride had a bent and noncopolanar structure, presenting a striking contrast to its isomer, 3,3,'4,4'-BPDA. This dianhydride was reacted with aromatic diamines in a polar aprotic solvent such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) to form polyamic acid intermediates, which imidized chemically to polyimides with inherent viscosities of 0.34-0.55 dL/g, depending on the diamine used. The polyimides from 2,2,'3,3'-BPDA exhibited a good solubility and were dissolved in polar aprotic solvents and polychlorocarbons. These polyimides have high glass transition temperatures above 283 degrees C. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that these polyimides were fairly stable up to 500 degrees C, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 534-583 degrees C in nitrogen atmosphere and 537-561 degrees C in air atmosphere. All polyimides were amorphous according to X-ray determination. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Physical properties of thin films of soluble and insoluble aromatic polyimides were compared by d.s.c., u.v.-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, and prism coupler technique. D.s.c. results showed that the thermal properties of insoluble polyimides are superior to those of soluble ones, owing to the specific molecular interactions of insoluble polyimides, revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. However, the specific molecular interactions sacrifice the transparency in their thin films, shown by u.v.-visible transmission spectra. Negative birefringence of thin films, not only for soluble polimides but also for polyamic acids of insoluble polyimides, was confirmed by prism coupler, while thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized lack high levels of negative birefringence. It is regarded that thin films of insoluble polyimides thermally imidized are likely to be isotropic because of molecular relaxation above their glass transition temperatures (T-g) in the course of thermal imidization, according to Flory's principle. On the contrary, thin films of insoluble poyimide chemically imidized keep the same levels of negative birefringence as those of the relevant polyamic acid thin films. Judging from the opposite cases, it is recognized that molecular relaxation above T-g weakens the optical anisotropy of polyimide thin films. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of three kinds of soluble polyimides were prepared with the direct deposition method, The monolayer structures were characterized with W-vis absorption spectroscopy, the wide angle X-ray scattering method and electrochemical techniques. The polyimide molecules in the LB monolayers lie orderly on the substrate surfaces with the orientation in which the dianhydride group is normal to the substrate surface and two carbonyl oxygen groups close to the surface. Therefore, the thickness of the three kinds of polyimide LB monolayers are the same because it depends on the distance between the two carbonyl oxygen groups in the same ring. The area of monomeric units are dependent on the length of the diamine group. The model of the molecular packing proposed from the quantomechanical calculation is in good agreement with the experimental results. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to separate and quantify aromatic diester-diacids isomers which arise from the opening selectivity of anhydride rings towards methanol. C-13 NMR spectroscopy was a supplementary tool to characterize the isomer structure. It was found that a meta-position attack is slightly preferred in pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), while the preferred position of an attack in bridged dianhydrides is determined by the chemical nature (donors or accepters) of the bridged group. The stronger its electron-withdrawing abilities, the lower the probability of a meta-position attack.

Three pairs of polyimide/polyimide blends (50/50 wt%) with different molecular structures were prepared by two ways, i.e. mixing of the polyamic acid precursors with subsequent imidization, and direct solution mixing of the polyimides. The blends were studied with DMA technique. The results obtained show that all the blends prepared with these two different ways are miscible, as there existed only one glass transition temperature(Tg) for all the blends. It is suggested that the miscibility of these polyimide/polyimide blends is a result of the strong inter-molecular charge-transfer interaction between the chains of their components.

Artificial superhydrophobic surfaces with a hierarchical topography were fabricated by using layer-by-layer assembly of polyelectrolytes and silica nanoparticles on microsphere-patterned polyimide precursor substrates followed with thermal and fluoroalkylsilane treatment. In this special hierarchical topography, micrometer-scale structures were provided by replica molding of polyamic acid using two-dimensional arrays of polystyrene latex spheres as templates, and nanosized silica particles were then assembled on these microspheres to construct finer structures at the nanoscale. Heat treatment was conducted to induce chemical cross-linking between polyelectrolytes and simultaneously convert polyamic acid to polyimide. After surface modification with fluoroalkylsilane, the as-prepared highly hydrophilic surface was endowed with superhydrophobicity due to the bioinspired combination of low surface energy materials and hierarchical surface structures. A superhydrophobic surface with a static water contact angle of 160 degrees and sliding angle of less than 10 degrees was obtained. Notably, the polyimide microspheres were integrated with the substrate and were mechanically stable. In addition, the chemical and mechanical stability of the polyelectrolyte/silica nanoparticle multilayers could be increased by heat-induced cross-linking between polyelectrolytes to form nylon-like films, as well as the formation of interfacial chemical bonds.

Background There is evidence that certain mutations in the double-strand break repair pathway ataxia-telangiectasia mutated gene act in a dominant-negative manner to increase the risk of breast cancer. There are also some reports to suggest that the amino acid substitution variants T2119C Ser707Pro and C3161G Pro1054Arg may be associated with breast cancer risk. We investigate the breast cancer risk associated with these two nonconservative amino acid substitution variants using a large Australian population-based case–control study. Methods The polymorphisms were genotyped in more than 1300 cases and 600 controls using 5' exonuclease assays. Case–control analyses and genotype distributions were compared by logistic regression. Results The 2119C variant was rare, occurring at frequencies of 1.4 and 1.3% in cases and controls, respectively (P = 0.8). There was no difference in genotype distribution between cases and controls (P = 0.8), and the TC genotype was not associated with increased risk of breast cancer (adjusted odds ratio = 1.08, 95% confidence interval = 0.59–1.97, P = 0.8). Similarly, the 3161G variant was no more common in cases than in controls (2.9% versus 2.2%, P = 0.2), there was no difference in genotype distribution between cases and controls (P = 0.1), and the CG genotype was not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (adjusted odds ratio = 1.30, 95% confidence interval = 0.85–1.98, P = 0.2). This lack of evidence for an association persisted within groups defined by the family history of breast cancer or by age. Conclusion The 2119C and 3161G amino acid substitution variants are not associated with moderate or high risks of breast cancer in Australian women.
