We prove a general Zariski-van Kampen-Lefschetz type theorem for higher homotopy groups of generic and nongeneric pencils on singular open complex spaces.

Spectral bounds and basis results for non-self-adjoint pencils, with an application to Hagen-Poiseuille flow

We obtain eigenvalue enclosures and basisness results for eigen- and associated functions of a non-self-adjoint unbounded linear operator pencil A−λBA−λB in which BB is uniformly positive and the essential spectrum of the pencil is empty. Both Riesz basisness and Bari basisness results are obtained. The results are applied to a system of singular differential equations arising in the study of Hagen–Poiseuille flow with non-axisymmetric disturbances.

Courtship and mating behaviour of the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Se describe la secuencia de cortejo y apareamiento de machos y hembras de Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefèbvre) en el laboratorio. Esta secuencia no varió en presencia o ausencia de plantas de maíz. Se estudió la capacidad de atracción de un sexo sobre el otro atando el individuo de un sexo y dejando libre al complementario. La secuencia de cortejo y apareo de las hembras atadas fue la misma que la de las no atadas, pero los machos atados permanecieron absolutamente inactivos. La edad de los adultos (1 día versus 2 días) no afectó al porcentaje de apareamiento. Se encontraron diferencias en la hora del inicio de la llamada de las hembras y en la edad de las hembras en la primera llamada entre la población estudiada y lo descrito para una población griega, diferencias que podrían estar relacionadas con el origen geográfico. Se discute el papel de los penachos abdominales de los machos en el vuelo de cortejo, rechazándose que estimulen el comportamiento de llamada de las hembras o que las atraigan. Cuando no se aplicaron feromonas, el porcentaje de apareamiento en el laboratorio o en el campo no varió cuando aumentó la densidad de la población. Sin embargo, en los campos en que se aplicó confusión sexual, el porcentaje de apareamiento aumentó al aumentar la densidad de adultos. En la discusión se aportan algunas consecuencias para la investigación de la composición de las feromonas y su uso para el seguimiento de plagas y el control mediante confusión sexual.

On the stability radius of a generalized state-space system

The concept of “distance to instability” of a system matrix is generalized to system pencils which arise in descriptor (semistate) systems. Difficulties arise in the case of singular systems, because the pencil can be made unstable by an infinitesimal perturbation. It is necessary to measure the distance subject to restricted, or structured, perturbations. In this paper a suitable measure for the stability radius of a generalized state-space system is defined, and a computable expression for the distance to instability is derived for regular pencils of index less than or equal to one. For systems which are strongly controllable it is shown that this measure is related to the sensitivity of the poles of the system over all feedback matrices assigning the poles.

A expressão do pesar nas atividades ocupacionais quando alguém querido morre

O luto pela morte de um ente querido compreende um processo de reorganização pessoal frente à perda e que por isso tende a desdobramento singulares, conforme a natureza e intensidade do vínculo. A pessoa então pode experimentar uma variedade de reações que , conforme a ocorrência e a severidade das manifestações , irão repercutir na qualidade de viver. Esta pesquisa teve o objetivo de compreender a expressão do pesar nas atividades ocupacionais quando da morte de uma pessoa significativa. A estratégia metodológica fundamentou-se na abordagem qualitativa do tipo "estudo de caso", de duas pessoas (colaboradores) que chegaram em Serviço de Pronto Atendimento a Pessoas que Sofreram Perdas. Para a coleta dos dados foram definidos três encontros, sendo que nos dois primeiros foram realizadas às entrevistas abordando aspectos da vida pessoal e ocupacional e no terceiro uma oficina de atividades, sendo disponibilizados materiais plásticos; como papel , lápis de cor, canetas esferográficas, tesoura, revistas, cola branca, cola colorida, purpurina, entre outros, com o objetivo de favorecer a livre expressão nas atividades ocupacionais, estando de acordo com a hipótese de que, em situações de perdas e luto, as pessoas experiência um período de retraimento e afastamento das relações sociais e das atividades habituais, indicando que a perda interfere significativamente no cotidiano das suas ocupações, incluindo falta de prazer em desempenhar o trabalho, em ter cuidados pessoais e nas atividades da vida diária (AVD' S), sugerindo a ocorrência do luto ocupacional pela perda das atividade desempenhadas com e para o ente querido falecido. Neste sentido, pode ser observada alteração nas funções ocupacionais em que padrões habituais de atividades são rompidos, remetendo a difícil tarefa de renunciar, excluir e incluir novos papéis. Por outro lado, a estratégia proposta a coleta dos dados revelou-se como um recurso favorável à compreensão e expressão do enlutado, estimulando a aceitação da perda, a avaliação do vinculo co falecido (a) e a elaboração do luto. O uso do recurso material foi favorável a expressão dos pensamentos, sentimentos e necessidades, bem como de competência, habilidades, funções ocupacionais e outros aspectos da existência, ressaltando a importância da compreensão biopsicossocial e ocupacional da pessoa em situação de luto, em que se destaca a assistência Terapêutica Ocupacional agregando esforços na prevenção e promoção a saúde.

Adequação de demandas funcionais de atividades para a participação escolar de crianças com disfu'nções neuromotoras

The school participation is a prerequisite for the construction of knowledge, learning and development. Neurological deficits may affect child's ability to explore the environment and engage in typical activities. Considering the importance of encouraging professionals in the field of education to conduct simple adjustments in school activities of daily life, this study aimed to adapt, with low cost materials, resources of entertainment and educational for children with neuromotor disorders . It was objects of this study eight resources prescribed and designed for three children diagnosed with cerebral palsy: domino, puzzle, memory game, moving magnetized alphabet, crossword, doll body scheme, adaptation of pencils for writing and bracelet sinker.The analysis of these resources occurred in the parameters of conventional design and management skills, followed by identifying the limiting conditions of the motor skills of the cases observed, indicating the materials used in the adaptation and possible uses. This study provides subsidy for implementation of teaching strategies in the care of students with neuromotor disorders.

Miniversal deformations of matrices of bilinear forms

Conchoid surfaces of spheres

The conchoid of a surface F with respect to given xed point O is roughly speaking the surface obtained by increasing the radius function with respect to O by a constant. This paper studies conchoid surfaces of spheres and shows that these surfaces admit rational parameterizations. Explicit parameterizations of these surfaces are constructed using the relations to pencils of quadrics in R3 and R4. Moreover we point to remarkable geometric properties of these surfaces and their construction.

Air Mines. Urban Space Station

Air Mines The sky over the city's port was the color of a faulty screen, only partly lit up. As the silhouette of nearby buildings became darker, but more clearly visible against the fading blur-filter of a background, the realization came about how persistent a change had been taking place. Slowly, old wooden water reservoirs and rattling HVAC systems stopped being the only inhabitants of roofs. Slightly trembling, milkish jellyfish-translucent air volumes had joined the show in multiples. A few years ago artists and architects seized upon the death of buildings as their life-saving media. Equipped with constructive atlases and instruments they started disemboweling their subjects, poking about their systems, dumping out on the street the battered ugliness of their embarrassing bits and pieces, so rightly hidden by facades and height from everyday view. But, would you believe it? Even ?old ladies?, investment bankers or small children failed to get upset. Of course, old ladies are not what they used to be. It was old ladies themselves that made it happen after years of fights with the town hall, imaginative proposals and factual arguments. An industry with little financial gains but lots of welcome externalities was not, in fact, the ground for investment bankers. But they too had to admit that having otherwise stately buildings make fine particulate pencils with their facades was not the worse that could happen. Yes, making soot pencils had been found an interesting and visible end product of the endeavor, a sort of mining the air for vintage writing tools one can actually touch. The new view from the street did not seem as solid or dignified as that of old, and they hated that the market for Fine Particulates Extraction (FPE, read efpee) had to be applied on a matrix of blocks and streets that prevented undue concentration of the best or worse solutions. It had to be an evenly distributed city policy in order for the city to apply for cleaning casino money. Once the first prototypes had been deployed in buildings siding Garden Avenue or Bulwark Street even fast movers appreciated the sidekick of flower and plant smell dripping down the Urban Space Stations (USS, read use; USSs, read uses) as air and walls cooled off for a few hours after sunset. Enough. It was all nice to remember, but it was now time to go up and start the lightweight afternoon maintenance of their USS. Coop discussions had taken place all through the planning and continued through the construction phase as to how maintenance was going to be organized. Fasters had voted for a pro, pay a small amount and let them use it for rent and produce. In the end some neighbors decided they were slow enough to take care and it was now the turn. Regret came periodically, sometimes a week before, and lasted until work actually started. But lately it had been replaced by anxiety when it needed to be passed over to the next caretaker. It did not look their shift was good enough and couldn?t wait to fix it. Today small preparations needed to be made for a class visit next day from a nearby cook school. They were frequenters. It had not been easy, but it shouldn?t have been that hard. In the end, even the easiest things are hard if they involve a city, buildings and neighbors. On the face of the data, the technicalities and the way final designs had been worked out for adaptation to the different settings, the decision of where to go was self evident, but organization issues and the ever-growing politics of taste in a city of already-gentrified-rodents almost put the project in the frozen orbit of timeless beautiful future possibilities. This is how it was. A series of designs by XClinic and OSS had made it possible to adapt to different building structures, leave in most cases the roof untouched and adapted a new technology of flexing fiberglass tubes that dissipated wind pressure in smooth bending.......

Account book of Andrew Croswell, 1794-1802

Andrew Croswell kept this account book while an undergraduate at Harvard College. It contains entries from 1794, the year he entered, until his graduation in 1798. There is also one entry on the back cover apparently made in 1802. The entries, divided by school term, are very detailed. Croswell indicates the cost of the following, among many other expenses and purchases: transportation, most often to Hingham and Plymouth; payment for "passing the bridge"; candles; hiring a horse; wood and having it cut; laundry; quills and pencils; paper and ink; razors, haircuts, hair ribbons; a trunk; clothing and cloth for trousers; furniture; tickets to the theater; door locks; a bowl and spoon; "batts and balls" and "other necessaries"; tobacco; toothbrushes; shoe and boot repair; fruit; wine, brandy and rum; cheese; coffee and tea; butter; lemons; sugar; and wafers. There are also entries for college-related costs, including the payment of quarter bills, buttery bills, Hasty Pudding Club dues, and a fee to the President of Harvard College related to Croswell's graduation. There are also entries pertaining to the cost of celebrating various special occasions, including Election Day, Christmas Eve, "Independent Day," and George Washington's birthday.
