This paper focuses on new paleontological discoveries that have come to light while working on a Permian "paieobotanical" transect. from Oman to Central Morocco, In the Huqf area, the continental plant bearing "Gharif" Formation is bracketed by two welt dated marine Formations, providing new age constraint for the discovered "mixed" paleoHora, The newly named KubergarH;Jian'Murgabian "Gharif Paleoflora" is of outstanding paleogeographic .ignificance, Gondwanan, Cathaysian and Euramerian elements are found to be associated, The understanding of the kinematics of the Permian vegetal cover lead us to test the proposed Peri-Tethyan paleogeographical contours

Pangea és una xarxa connectada a Internet. Per aixo, quan em van proposar d'escriure aquest article de seguida vaig pensar que en aquests moments és molt difícil fer referéncies a temes relacionats amb Internet sense caure en el parany deis topics, o sense contribuir a donar la imatge que actualment ja no es pot viure sense aquesta gran xarxa. Aquesta darrera percepció és la que em fa més por, sobretot en el camp de I'educació. La popularització d'lnternet en el món educatiu suposa i suposara en els propers anys una petita revolució que pot contribuir a la innovació en el sistema educatiu, pero malauradament els reptes de la renovació i millora de I'ensenyament en tots els seus nivells i aspectes no es poden abordar exclusivament davant d'un ordinador connectat a la xarxa.

The Variscan structures of the Caucasus region are still quite difficult to decipher, they certainly deserved some in depth investigations in the future. Thus, it is right to question any paleogeographic models proposed in that area, as made by D.A. Ruban. We present here the arguments that we used to decide on the distribution of the terranes in that region. The Transcaucasus massif is regarded as pertaining to the Galatian super-terrane, whereas, the Great Caucasus terrane belongs to the Hanseatic ribbon terrane. The latter was a part of Hunia, detached from Laurussia in the Devonian.

The Permian Chert Event (PCE) was a 30 Ma long episode of unusual chert accumulation along the northwest margin of Pangea, and possibly worldwide. The onset of the PCE occurred at about the Sakmarian-Artinskian boundary in the Sverdrup Basin, Canadian Arctic, where it coincides with a maximum flooding event, the ending of high-frequency/high-amplitude shelf cyclicity, the onset of massive biogenic chert deposition in deep-water distal areas, and a long-term shift from warm- to cool-water carbonate sedimentation in shallow-water proximal areas. A similar and coeval shift is observed from the Barents Sea to the northwestern USA. A landward and southward expansion of silica factories occurred during the Middle and Late Permian at which time warm-water carbonate producers disappeared completely from the northwest margin of Pangea. Biotically impoverished and increasingly narrow cold-water carbonate factories (characterised by non-cemented bioclasts of sponges, bryozoans, echinoderms and brachiopods) were then progressively replaced by silica factories. By Late Permian time, little carbonate sediments accumulated in the Barents Sea and in the Sverdrup Basin. where the deep- to shallow-water sedimentary spectrum was occupied by siliceous sponge spicules. By that time, biogenic silica sedimentation was common throughout the world. Silica factories collapsed in the Late Permian, abruptly bringing the PCE to an end. In northwest Pangea, the end- Permian collapse of the PCE was associated with a major transgression and with a return to much warmer oceanic and continental climatic conditions. Chert deposition resumed in the distal oceanic areas during the early Middle Triassic (Anisian) after a 8-10 Ma interruption (Early Triassic Chert Gap). The conditions necessary for the onset, expansion and zenith of the PCE were provided by the thermohaline circulation of nutrient-rich cold waters along the northwestern and western margin of Pangea, and possibly throughout the world oceans. These conditions provided an efficient transportation mechanism that constantly replenished the supply of silica in the area, created a nutrient- and oxygen-rich environment favouring siliceous biogenic productivity. established cold sea-floor conditions, hindering silica dissolution, while increasing calcium carbonate solubility, and provided conditions adverse to organic and inorganic carbonate production, The northwest margin of Pangea was, for nearly 30 Ma. bathed by cold waters presumably derived from the seasonal melting of northern sea ice, the assumed engine for thermohaline circulation. This process started near the Sakmarian-Artinskian boundary. intensified throughout Middle and Late Permian time and ceased suddenly in latest Permian time, It led to oceanic conditions much colder than normally expected from the palaeolatitudes. and the influence of cold northerly-derived water was felt as far south southern Nevada. The demise of silica factories was caused by the rapid breakdown of these conditions and the establishment of a much warmer marine environment accompanied by sluggish circulation and perhaps a reduced input of dissolved silica to the ocean. Complete thawing of northern sea ice would have ended thermohaline circulation and led to warm and sluggish oceanic conditions inimical to the production. accumulation and preservation of biogenic silica.

Software corpora facilitate reproducibility of analyses, however, static analysis for an entire corpus still requires considerable effort, often duplicated unnecessarily by multiple users. Moreover, most corpora are designed for single languages increasing the effort for cross-language analysis. To address these aspects we propose Pangea, an infrastructure allowing fast development of static analyses on multi-language corpora. Pangea uses language-independent meta-models stored as object model snapshots that can be directly loaded into memory and queried without any parsing overhead. To reduce the effort of performing static analyses, Pangea provides out-of-the box support for: creating and refining analyses in a dedicated environment, deploying an analysis on an entire corpus, using a runner that supports parallel execution, and exporting results in various formats. In this tool demonstration we introduce Pangea and provide several usage scenarios that illustrate how it reduces the cost of analysis.

Surface wave tomography, using the fundamental Rayleigh wave velocities and those of higher modes between 1 and 4 and periods between 50 and 160 s, is used to image structures with a horizontal resolution of ~250 km and a vertical resolution of ~50 km to depths of ~300 km in the mantle. A new model, PM_v2_2012, obtained from 3×10**6 seismograms, agrees well with earlier lower resolution models. It is combined with temperature estimates from oceanic plate models and with pressure and temperature estimates from the mineral compositions of garnet peridotite nodules to generate a number of estimates of SV(P,T) based on geophysical and petrological observations alone. These are then used to estimate the unrelaxed shear modulus and its derivatives with respect to pressure and temperature, which agree reasonably with values from laboratory experiments. At high temperatures relaxation occurs, causing the shear wave velocity to depend on frequency. This behaviour is parameterised using a viscosity to obtain a Maxwell relaxation time. The relaxation behaviour is described using a dimensionless frequency, which depends on an activation energy E and volume Va. The values of E and Va obtained from the geophysical models agree with those from laboratory experiments on high temperature creep. The resulting expressions are then used to determine the lithospheric thickness from the shear wave velocity variations. The resolution is improved by about a factor of two with respect to earlier models, and clearly resolves the thick lithosphere beneath active intracontinental belts that are now being shortened. The same expressions allow the three dimensional variations of the shear wave attenuation and viscosity to be estimated.

For more than 30 million years, in early Mesozoic Pangea, ""rauisuchian"" archosaurs were the apex predators in most terrestrial ecosystems, but their biology and evolutionary history remain poorly understood. We describe a new ""rauisuchian"" based on ten individuals found in a single locality from the Middle Triassic (Ladinian) Santa Maria Formation of southern Brazil. Nine articulated and associated skeletons were discovered, three of which have nearly complete skulls. Along with sedimentological and taphonomic data, this suggests that those highly successful predators exhibited some kind of intraspecific interaction. Other monotaxic assemblages of Triassic archosaurs are Late Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) in age, approximately 10 million years younger than the material described here. Indeed, the studied assemblage may represent the earliest evidence of gregariousness among archosaurs, adding to our knowledge on the origin of a behavior pattern typical of extant taxa.

Using fluid mechanics, we reinterpret the mantle images obtained from global and regional tomography together with geochemical, geological and paleomagnetic observations, and attempt to unravel the pattern of convection in the Indo-Atlantic "box" and its temporal evolution over the last 260 Myr. The << box >> presently contains a) a broad slow seismic anomaly at the CMB which has a shape similar to Pangea 250 Myr ago, and which divides into several branches higher in the lower mantle, b) a "superswell, centered on the western edge of South Africa, c) at least 6 "primary hotspots" with long tracks related to traps, and d) numerous smaller hotspots. In the last 260 Myr, this mantle box has undergone 10 trap events, 7 of them related to continental breakup. Several of these past events are spatially correlated with present-day seismic anomalies and/or upwellings. Laboratory experiments show that superswells, long-lived hotspot tracks and traps may represent three evolutionary stages of the same phenomenon, i.e. episodic destabilization of a hot, chemically heterogeneous thermal boundary layer, close to the bottom of the mantle. When scaled to the Earth's mantle, its recurrence time is on the order of 100-200 Myr. At any given time, the Indo-Atlantic box should contain 3 to 9 of these instabilities at different stages of their development, in agreement with observations. The return flow of the downwelling slabs, although confined to two main << boxes >> (Indo-Atlantic and Pacific) by subduction zone geometry, may therefore not be passive, but rather take the form of active thermochemical instabilities. A Bacia Lusitaniana é uma bacia sedimentar que se desenvolveu na Margem Ocidental Ibérica (MOI) durante parte do Mesozóico, e a sua dinâmica enquadra-se no contexto da fragmentação da Pangeia, mais especificamente da abertura do Atlântico Norte. Caracteriza-se como uma bacia distensiva, pertencente a uma margem continental do tipo atlântico de rift não vulcânica. Ocupa mais de 20 000 km2 na parte central da MOI, alongando-se por cerca de 200 km segundo direcção aproximada NNW-SSE e por mais de 100 km na direcção perpendicular; cerca de 2/3 aflora na área continental emersa e a restante área, encontra-se imersa, na plataforma continental. Trata-se da única bacia das margens do Atlântico Norte com extensa exposição superficial, pelo que tem atraído nas últimas décadas um número considerável de geólogos, especialistas de variados domínios, para a realização de trabalhos de investigação integrados em equipas nacionais e internacionais, muitos delas ligadas à indústria do petróleo. Ao longo das várias décadas de prospecção foram efectuadas cerca de 50 sondagens profundas e mais de 37 000 km de perfis sísmicos de reflexão 2D. A evolução tectónica da Bacia Lusitaniana foi condicionada por falhas que se formaram durante o episódio de gracturação tardi-varisca aproximadamente entre os 300 e os 280 M.a. Este episódio tardi-orogénico resulta de imposição de regime de cisalhamento direito à micro-placa ibérica nos seus paleolimites E-W setentrional e meridional, dos quais resultariam as falhas de desligamento esquerdo de direcção aproximada NNE-SSW a NE-SW. Outras falhas orogénicas variscas de orientação N-S (falha de Porto-Tomar) e NW-SE foram também importantes na estruturação da Bacia Lusitaniana, como adiante ficará patente. Esta é a herança tectónica da Bacia que levou, durante o estiramento crostal mesozóico, à formação do conjunto de bacias marginais na MOI. A evolução tectónica da Bacia Lusitaniana está condicionada pela distensão mesozóica relacionada com a abertura do Atlântico Norte, na proximidade do Atlântico Central, domínios oceânicos distintos separados pela Zona de Falha de Açores-Gibraltar (ZFAG). Esta constitui limite transformante entre placas, que numa fase inicial do ciclo alpino, ou seja da rotura da Pangea, separou dois grandes continentes, a Laurásia a Norte e a Gondwana a Sul. A Ibéria localiza-se, assim, durante o Mesozóico, numa posição de charneira, cuja actividade está também relacionada com a evolução dos limites de placa: i) a sul, entre África e a Eurásia, limite transcorrente ao longo da Zona de Falha de Açores Gibraltar e ii) a Oeste, entre a Ibéria e a Terra Nova limite divergente associado à evolução do Atlântico. Nas fases iniciais de desenvolvimento do proto-Atlântico norte, desde o Triásico, a Ibéria encontra-se solidária ao continente norte-americano, mas por estiramento litosférico progressivo, acabará por ocorrer rotura crostal e consequente oceanização no final do Cretácico Inf. Este conjunto de interações será assim responsável por uma evolução também complexa da Margem Ocidental da Ibéria, onde se encontra a Bacia Lusitaniana, bacia intracratónica, interna, separada de uma zona externa por um relevo estrutural, o horst da Berlenga. Desta forma, alguns processos complexos, uns exógenos, outros de clara influência endógena, vão ficando registados na Bacia. Referimo-nos a episódios de inversão tectónica precoce, a um magmatismo muito ténue - para todos os efeitos podendo-se considerar como uma margem continental de rift, não vulcânica - e a diapirismo que se encontra registado na sua área geográfica.

Prior to their Alpine overprinting, most of the pre-Mesozoic basement areas in Alpine orogenic structures shared a complex evolution, starting with Neoproterozoic sediments that are thought to have received detrital input from both West and East Gondwanan cratonic sources. A subsequent Neoproterozoic-Cambrian active margin setting at the Gondwana margin was followed by a Cambrian-Ordovician rifting period, including an Ordovician cordillera-like active margin setting. During the Late Ordovician and Silurian periods, the future Alpine domains recorded crustal extension along the Gondwana margin, announcing the future opening of the Paleotethys oceanic domain. Most areas then underwent Variscan orogenic events, including continental subduction and collisions with Avalonian-type basement areas along Laurussia and the juxtaposition and the duplication of terrane assemblages during strike slip, accompanied by contemporaneous crustal shortening and the subduction of Paleotethys under Laurussia. Thereafter, the final Pangea assemblage underwent Triassic and Jurassic extension, followed by Tertiary shortening, and leading to the buildup of the Alpine mountain chain. Recent plate-tectonic reconstructions place the Alpine domains in their supposed initial Cambrian-Ordovician positions in the eastern part of the Gondwana margin, where a stronger interference with the Chinese blocks is proposed, at least from the Ordovician onward. For the Visean time of the Variscan continental collision, the distinction of the former tectonic lower-plate situation is traceable but becomes blurred through the subsequent oblique subduction of Paleotethys under Laurussia accompanied by large-scale strike slip. Since the Pennsylvanian, this global collisional scenario has been replaced by subsequent and ongoing shortening and strike slip under rising geothermal conditions, and all of this occurred before all these puzzle elements underwent the complex Alpine reorganization.
