This paper describes the electrocatalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) in phosphate buffer solution by the immobilized citrate capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on 1,6-hexanedithiol (HDT) modified Au electrode. X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) of HDT suggests that it forms a monolayer on Au surface through one of the two single bondSH groups and the other single bondSH group is pointing away from the electrode surface. The free single bondSH groups of HDT were used to covalently attach colloidal AuNPs. The covalent attachment of AuNPs on HDT monolayer was confirmed from the observed characteristic carboxylate ion stretching modes of citrate attached with AuNPs in the infra-red reflection absorption spectrum (IRRAS) in addition to a higher reductive desorption charges obtained for AuNPs immobilized on HDT modified Au (Au/HDT/AuNPs) electrode in 0.1 M KOH when compared to HDT modified Au (Au/HDT) electrode. The electron transfer reaction of [Fe(CN)6]4−/3− was markedly hindered at the HDT modified Au (Au/HDT) electrode while it was restored with a peak separation of 74 mV after the immobilization of AuNPs on Au/HDT (Au/HDT/AuNPs) electrode indicating a good electronic communication between the immobilized AuNPs and the underlying bulk Au electrode through a HDT monolayer. The Cottrell slope obtained from the potential-step chronoamperometric measurements for the reduction of ferricyanide at Au/HDT/AuNPs was higher than that of bare Au electrode indicating the increased effective surface area of AuNPs modified electrode. The Au/HDT/AuNPs electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) by enhancing the oxidation peak current to more than two times with a 210 mV negative shift in the oxidation potential when compared to a bare Au electrode. The standard heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (ks) calculated for AA oxidation at Au/HDT/AuNPs electrode was 5.4 × 10−3 cm s−1. The oxidation peak of AA at Au/HDT/AuNPs electrode was highly stable upon repeated potential cycling. Linear calibration plot was obtained for AA over the concentration range of 1–110 μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9950. The detection limit of AA was found to be 1 μM. The common physiological interferents such as glucose, oxalate ions and urea do not show any interference within the detection limit of AA. The selectivity of the AuNPs modified electrode was illustrated by the determination of AA in the presence of uric acid.

In this work, a new promoter, tetrasulfophthalocyanine (FeTSPc), one kind of environmental friendly material, was found to be very effective in both inhibiting self-poisoning and improving the intrinsic catalysis activity, consequently enhancing the electro-oxidation current during the electro-oxidation of formic acid. The cyclic voltammograms test showed that the formic acid oxidation peak current density has been increased about 10 times compared with that of the Pt electrode without FeTSPc. The electrochemical double potential step chronoamperometry measurements revealed that the apparent activity energy decreases from 20.64 kJ mol(-1) to 17.38 kJ mol(-1) after Pt electrode promoted by FeTSPc. The promoting effect of FeTSPc may be owed to the specific structure and abundant electrons of FeTSPc resulting in both the steric hindrance of the formation of poisoning species (CO) and intrinsic kinetic enhancement. In the single cell test, the performance of DFAFC increased from 80 mW cm(-2) mg(-1) (Pt) to 130 mW cm(-2) mg(-1) after the anode electrode adsorbed FeTSPc.

Stable lipid film was made by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemical behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was studied. The modified electrode coated with rutin gave quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on cyclic voltammogram in the phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The peak current did not decrease apparently after stored at 4 degreesC for 8 hours in refrigerator. This model of biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by rutin. Rutin in the film acts as a mediator. The modified electrode shows a great enhancement and the anodic peak potential was reduced by about 220 mV in the oxidation of 5 X 10(-3) mol L-1 NADN compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. A stable film was prepared by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemistry behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was investigated. The modified electrode coated with rutin shows a quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on the cyclic voltammogram in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). This model of biological membrane was not only used to provide biological environment but also to investigate the oxidation of ascorbic acid by rutin. The DPPC-rutin modified electrode behaves as electrocatalytic oxidation to ascorbic acid. The oxidation peak current of ascorbic acid increases drastically and the peak potential of 4 x 10(-4) mol L-1 ascorbic acid shifts negatively about 100 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The catalytic current increased linearly with the ascorbic acid concentration in the range of 2 x 10(-4) mol L-1 and 1.4 x 10(-3) mol L-1 at a scan rate of 50 mV s(-1).

The electrochemical oxidation of potassium nitrite has been studied in the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) [C(2)mim][NTf2] by cyclic voltammetry at platinum electrodes. A chemically irreversible oxidation peak was observed, and a solubility of 7.5(+/- 0.5) mM and diffusion coefficient of 2.0(+/- 0.2) x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) were calculated from potential step chronoamperometry on the microdisk electrode. A second, and sometimes third, oxidation peak was also observed when the anodic limit was extended, and these were provisionally assigned to the oxidation of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrate (NO3-), respectively. The electrochemical oxidation of nitrogen dioxide gas (NO2) was also studied by cyclic voltammetry in [C(2)mim][NTf2] on Pt electrodes of various size, giving a solubility of ca. 51(+/- 0.2) mM and diffusion coefficient of 1.6(+/- 0.05) x 10(-10) m(2) s(-1) (at 25 degrees C). It is likely that NO2 exists predominantly as its dimer, N2O4, at room temperature. The oxidation mechanism follows a CE process, which involves the initial dissociation of the dimer to the monomer, followed by a one-electron oxidation. A second, larger oxidation peak was observed at more positive potentials and is thought to be the direct oxidation of N2O4. In addition to understanding the mechanisms of NO2- and NO2 oxidations, this work has implications in the electrochemical detection of nitrite ions and of NO2 gas in RTIL media, the latter which may be of particular use in gas sensing.

The electrochemical oxidation of dissolved hydrogen gas has been studied in a range of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), namely [C(2)mim][NTf2], [C(4)mim][NTf2], [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2][NTf2], [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][NTf2], [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], [C(4)mim][BF4], [C(4)mim][PF6], [C(4)mim][OTf], and [C(6)mim]Cl on a platinum microdisk electrode of diameter 10 mu m. In all cases, except [C(6)mim]Cl, a broad quasi-electrochemically reversible oxidation peak between 0.3 to 1.3 V vs Ag was seen prior to electrode activation ([C(6)mim]Cl showed an almost irreversible wave). When the electrode was pre-anodized (

Electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) has been studied at a platinum microelectrode (10 mu m diameter) in five room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): [C(4)mim][OTf], [C(4)dmim][NTf2], [C(4)mim][PF6],. [C(6)mim][FAP], and [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP] (where [C-n mim](+) = 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C(n)dmim](+) = 1-alkyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium, [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6](+) = tris(p-hexyl)-tetradecylphosphonium, [OTf](-) = trifluoromethlysulfonate, [NTf2](-) = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [PF6](-) = hexafluorophosphate, and [FAP](-) = trifluorotris(pentafluoroethyl)phosphate). In four of the RTILs ([C(4)dmim][NTf2], [C(4)mim][PF6], [C(6)mim][FAP], and [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP]), no clear oxidative signal was observed. In [C(4)mim][OTf], a chemically irreversible oxidation peak was observed on the oxidative sweep with no signal seen on the reverse scan. The oxidative signal showed an adsorptive stripping peak type followed by near steady-state limiting current behavior. Potential step chronoamperometry was carried out on the reductive wave, giving a diffusion coefficient and solubility of 1.6 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) and 7 mM, respectively (at 25 degrees C). Using these data, we modeled the oxidation signal kinetically, assuming adsorption preceded oxidation and that adsorption was approximately Langmuirian. The oxidation step was described by an electrochemically fully irreversible Tafel law/Butler-Volmer formalism. Modeling indicated a substantial buildup of H2S in the double layer in excess of the coverage that would be expected for a monolayer of chemisorbed H2S, reflecting high solubility of the gas in [C(4)mim][OTf] and possible attractive interactions with the [OTf](-) anions accumulated at the electrode at potentials positive of the potential of zero charge. Solute enrichment of the double layer in the solution adjacent to the electrode appears a novel feature of RTIL electrochemistry.

The electrochemical oxidation of catechol and dopamine has been studied at a platinum micro-electrode (10 pm diameter) in two room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C(4)mim][BE4]). For catechol in [C(2)mim][NTf2], an electrochemically quasi-reversible oxidation peak was observed at 1.1 V vs. Pt with a back peak at 0.4 V vs. Pt. This is assigned to the two-electron oxidation of catechol to doubly protonated o-benzoquinone. Double-step chronoamperometry gave a diffusion coefficient for the catechol and the oxidised species which is 3.8 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for both. For catechol in [C(4)mim][BF4], a two-electron oxidation wave was observed at 1.0 V vs. Pt with no back peak. Another peak at less positive potential was also observed at 0.6 V vs. Pt in [C(4)mim][BF4] but not in [C(2)mim][NTf2] which is assigned to the adsorption of electrochemically formed neutral o-benzoquinone on the platinum electrode. The oxidised protonated o-benzoquinone is suggested to be deprotonated by the [BF4](-) anion, but not by the [NTf2](-) anion: hence adsorption of the neutral species at the platinum electrode, not the charged species. For dopamine in both RTILs, two chemically irreversible oxidation peaks were observed at 0.75 V and 1.1 V vs. Pt, and assigned to the oxidation of dopamine to the corresponding semi-quinone and the quinone. Potential-step chronoamperometry was carried out on the oxidation waves of dopamine in [C(2)mim][NTf2] and the diffusion coefficient of species in solution was calculated to be 6.85 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and confirmed that the waves corresponded to one and two electron processes. A third wave was observed at 1.8 V vs. Pt which is attributed to the oxidation of the amine group to a radical cation with likely subsequent follow up chemistry. In [C(4)mim][BF4] a peak at less positive potential was observed for dopamine, similar to catechol which is assigned to the adsorption of the neutral quinone species on the platinum electrode formed by the reaction of the removal of protons from the oxidised dopamine with the [BF4](-) anion. The electrochemical behaviour of propanil and related N-substituted amides (acetanilide and N,N-diphenylacetamide) was studied by cyclic and square wave voltammetry using a glassy carbon electrode. Propanil has been found to have chemical stability under the established analytical conditions and showed an oxidation peak at +1.27V versus Ag/AgCl at pH 7.5. N,N-diphenylacetamide has a higher oxidation potential than the other compounds of +1.49V versus Ag/AgCl. Acetanilide oxidation occurred at a potential similar to that of propanil, +1.24V versus Ag/AgCl. These results are in agreement with the substitution pattern of the nitrogen atom of the amide. A degradation product of propanil, 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), was also studied, and showed an oxidation peak at +0.66V versus Ag/AgCl. A simple and specific quantitative electroanalytical method is described for the analysis of propanil in commercial products that contain propanil as the active ingredient, used in the treatment of rice crops in Portugal.

Primaquine, an antimalarial drug, presents a well-defined oxidation peak around +0.6V vs SCE at a glassy carbon electrode that can be used for its determination. Calibration graphs were obtained for primaquine in B-R buffer pH 4.0 from 3.00 x 10(-5) mol L-1 to 1.00 x 10(-2) mol L-1 using linear-scan voltammetry and 3.00 x 10(-5) mol L-1 to 1.00 x 10(-2) mol L-1 using differential pulse or square-wave voltammetry. The correspondent detection limits was 9.4 mu g mL(-1); 4.2 and 1.8 mu g mL(-1), respectively. All the voltammetric methods were applied with success in direct determination of the primaquine in commercial tablets without separation or extraction procedures.

Direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) mostly use low molecular weight alcohols such as methanol and ethanol as fuels. However, short-chain alcohol molecules have a relative high membrane crossover rate in DAFCs and a low energy density. Long chain alcohols such as butanol have a higher energy density, as well as a lower membrane crossover rate compared to methanol and ethanol. Although a significant number of studies have been dedicated to low molecular weight alcohols in DAFCs, very few studies are available for longer chain alcohols such as butanol. A significant development in the production of biobutanol and its proposed application as an alternative fuel to gasoline in the past decade makes butanol an interesting candidate fuel for fuel cells. Different butanol isomers were compared in this study on various Pt and PtSn bimetallic catalysts for their electro-oxidation activities in acidic media. Clear distinctive behaviors were observed for each of the different butanol isomers using cyclic voltammetry (CV), indicating a difference in activity and the mechanism of oxidation. The voltammograms of both n-butanol and iso-butanol showed similar characteristic features, indicating a similar reaction mechanism, whereas 2-butanol showed completely different features; for example, it did not show any indication of poisoning. Ter-butanol was found to be inactive for oxidation on Pt. In situ FTIR and CV analysis showed that OHads was essential for the oxidation of primary butanol isomers which only forms at high potentials on Pt. In order to enhance the water oxidation and produce OHads at lower potentials, Pt was modified by the oxophilic metal Sn and the bimetallic PtSn was studied for the oxidation of butanol isomers. A significant enhancement in the oxidation of the 1° butanol isomers was observed on addition of Sn to the Pt, resulting in an oxidation peak at a potential ∼520 mV lower than that found on pure Pt. The higher activity of PtSn was attributed to the bifunctional mechanism on PtSn catalyst. The positive influence of Sn was also confirmed in the PtSn nanoparticle catalyst prepared by the modification of commercial Pt/C nanoparticle and a higher activity was observed for PtSn (3:1) composition. The temperature-dependent data showed that the activation energy for butanol oxidation reaction over PtSn/C is lower than that over Pt/C.

A novel electrochemical biosensor, DNA/hemin/nafion–graphene/GCE, was constructed for the analysis of the benzo(a)pyrene PAH, which can produce DNA damage induced by a benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) enzyme-catalytic product. This biosensor was assembled layer-by-layer, and was characterized with the use of cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and atomic force microscopy. Ultimately, it was demonstrated that the hemin/nafion–graphene/GCE was a viable platform for the immobilization of DNA. This DNA biosensor was treated separately in benzo(a)pyrene, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and in their mixture, respectively, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis showed that an oxidation peak was apparent after the electrode was immersed in H2O2. Such experiments indicated that in the presence of H2O2, hemin could mimic cytochrome P450 to metabolize benzo(a)pyrene, and a voltammogram of its metabolite was recorded. The DNA damage induced by this metabolite was also detected by electrochemical impedance and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Finally, a novel, indirect DPV analytical method for BaP in aqueous solution was developed based on the linear metabolite versus BaP concentration plot; this method provided a new, indirect, quantitative estimate of DNA damage.

A simple one-step electrodeposition method was used to construct a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which has been modified with Cu doped gold nanoparticles (GNPs), i.e. a Cu@AuNPs/GCE. This electrode was characterized with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The eugenol was electrocatalytically oxidized at the Cu@AuNPs/GCE. At this electrode, in comparison with the behavior at the GCE alone, the corresponding oxidation peak current was enhanced and the shift of the oxidation potentials to lower values was observed. Electrochemical behavior of eugenol at the Cu@AuNPs/GCE was investigated with the use of the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique, and additionally, in order to confirm the electrochemical reaction mechanism for o-methoxy phenols, CVs for catechol, guaiacol and vanillin were investigated consecutively. Based on this work, an electrochemical reaction mechanism for o-methoxy phenols was suggested, and in addition, the above Cu@AuNPs/GCE was successfully employed for the analysis of eugenol in food samples.

Graphene's nano-dimensional nature and excellent electron transfer properties underlie its electrocatalytic behavior towards certain substances. In this light, we have used graphene in the electrochemical detection of bisphenol A. Graphene sheets were produced via soft chemistry route involving graphite oxidation and chemical reduction. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the as-synthesized graphene. Graphene exhibited amorphous structure in comparison with pristine graphite from XRD spectra. FTIR showed that graphene exhibits OH and COOH groups due to incomplete reduction. Raman spectroscopy revealed that multi-layered graphene was produced due to low intensity of the 2D-peak. Glassy carbon electrode was modified with graphene by a simple drop and dry method. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study the electrochemical properties of the prepared graphene-modified glassy carbon electrode using potassium ferricyanide as a redox probe. The prepared graphene- modified glassy carbon electrode exhibited more facile electron kinetics and enhanced current of about 75% when compared to the unmodified glassy carbon electrode. The modified electrode was used for the detection of bisphenol A. Under the optimum conditions, the oxidation peak current of bisphenol A varied linearly with concentration over a wide range of 5 x 10(-8) mol L-1 to 1 x 10(-6) mol L-1 and the detection limit of this method was as low as 4.689 x 10(-8) M. This method was also employed to determine bisphenol A in a real sample

Present work describes the characterization of commercially available ZnO and its electrochemical investigation of dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid. ZnO was characterized by powder XRD, UV-visible absorption, fluorescence, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The carbon paste electrode was modified with ZnO and ZnO/polyglycine for further electrochemical investigation of dopamine. The modified electrode shows good electrocatalytic activity towards the detection of dopamine with a reduction in overpotential. The ZnO/polyglycine modified carbon paste electrode (CPE/ZnO/Pgl) shows excellent electrochemical enhancement of peak currents for both dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) and for simultaneous detection of DA in the presence of high concentrations of AA with 0.214 V oxidation peak potential differences between them at pH 7.4. From the scan rate variation and concentration, the oxidation of DA and AA was found to be adsorption-controlled. The use of CPE/ZnO/Pgl is demonstrated for the detection of DA in blood serum and injection samples. This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012.
