Organic producers have limited methods of avoiding plant diseases that result in cosmetic damage to produce. Therefore, the appearance of organic produce is often less than perfect. We use an experimental auction to investigate how cosmetic damage affects consumers’ willingness to pay for organic apples. We find that 75% of the participants are willing to pay more for organic than for conventional apples given identical appearance. However, at the first sight of any imperfection in the appearance of the organic apples, this segment is significantly reduced. Furthermore, we find that there is a significant effect of interaction between cosmetic damage and product methods. Even though most consumers say they buy organic products to avoid pesticides, we find that cosmetic damage has a larger impact on the willingness to pay for organic apples than for conventional apples.

Public concern over impacts of chemicals in plant and animal production on health and the environment has led to increased demand for organic produce, which is usually promoted and often perceived as containing fewer contaminants, more nutrients, and being positive for the environment. These benefits are difficult to quantify, and potential environmental impacts on such benefits have not been widely studied. This book addresses these key points, examining factors such as the role of certain nutrients in prevention and promotion of chronic disease, potential health benefits of bioactive compounds in plants, the prevalence of food-borne pesticides and pathogens and how both local and global environmental factors may affect any differences between organic and conventionally produced food. In recent years, in overall value, the EU has become a net importer of organic food to supply increasing demand. Financial support for farmers during the conversion period has been made to help expand organic production as this was seen as a barrier to conversion. Meanwhile, farmers have been marketing products produced in this conversion period and labelled as such, the extent to which is described here for the UK, Portugal, Denmark, Ireland and Italy. Consumers' attitudes towards, and willingness-to-pay for, conversion-grade food in these countries is examined. It was found that consumers would be prepared to pay a premium for conversion-grade produce of around half the premium for organic produce with vegetables attracting a higher premium than meat. Finally, the potential of policies for marketing conversion-grade products to encourage more conversion is examined, together with barriers to achieving this. It is concluded that barriers to marketing such products, particularly from retailers, will be formidable. Thus, alternative policies are suggested. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

While searching for healthier diets, people became more attentive to organic produce. Yet, organic foods may be more susceptible to microbiological contamination because of the use of organic fertilizers, a possible source of pathogenic bacteria. In this study, 130 samples of different organic and conventional vegetable varieties sold in Brazil were analyzed for mesophilic aerobic bacteria, yeasts and molds, total coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Most of the mesophilic aerobic bacteria counts in organic and conventional vegetables ranged from 6 to 7 log10 CFU/g; most of the yeasts and molds counts ranged from 5 to 6 log10 CFU/g and most of the total coliforms counts ranged from 4 to 5 log10 CFU/g. E. coli was found in 41.5% of the organic and 40.0% of the conventional vegetables, and most samples had counts ranging from 1 to 2 log10 CFU/g. Salmonella spp. was not found in any sample. Comparative analyses of the microbial counts of organic and conventional vegetables showed that some organic varieties have greater counts. However, the global results show that this is not a trend. These results indicate the need of good farming practices, and proper sanitization before consumption, to ensure food quality and safety. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Although the current level of organic production in industrialised countries amounts to little more than 1-2 percent, it is recognised that one of the major issues shaping agricultural output over the next several decades will be the demand for organic produce (Dixon et al. 2001). In Australia, the issues of healthy food and environmental concern contribute to increasing demand and market volumes for organic produce. However, in Indonesia, using more economical inputs for organic production is a supply-side factor driving organic production. For individual growers and processors, conversion from conventional to organic agriculture is often a challenging step, entailing a thorough revision of established practices and heightened market insecurity. This paper examines the potential for a systems approach to the analysis of the conversion process, to yield insights for household and community decisions. A framework for applying farming systems research to investigate the benefits of organic production in both Australia and Indonesia is discussed. The framework incorporates scope for farmer participation, crucial to the understanding of farming systems; analysis of production; and relationships to resources, technologies, markets, services, policies and institutions in their local cultural context. A systems approach offers the potential to internalise the external effects that may be constraining decisions to convert to organic production, and for the design of decision-making tools to assist households and the community. Systems models can guide policy design and serve as a mechanism for predicting the impact of changes to the policy and market environments. The increasing emphasis of farming systems research on community and environment in recent years is in keeping with the proposed application to organic production, processing and marketing issues. The approach will also facilitate the analysis of critical aspects of the Australian production, marketing and policy environment, and the investigation of these same features in an Indonesian context.

Community garden project and allotments aims to increase community involvement, participation and activity in the locality.  We have a number of family groups (parents and children) working together. It is a lot of fun and a great way to meet new people from the area, get out of the house a few hours a week and be part of a really nice community group. We see our garden somewhat like a Co-op. Everyone is welcome to join us, we meet up at least three times a week and do the jobs around the garden together – mainly around vegetables and some fruit trees but we are interested in flowers and other things as well. We have a garden sale every Thursday between 12pm-2pm. We sell all organic produce grown in the garden and make our own jams to sell weekly also. Les Xarxes de Consum Solidari (XCS) o Grups de Consum Alternatiu del territori català són associacions que treballen en l'àmbit del comerç just i el consum responsable. Defensen un comerç just amb la voluntat de transformar radicalment el sistema per tal que es pagui un preu digne al productor, que respecti el medi ambient i que es subministrin aliments sans i adequats culturalment.El present projecte haurà d'implementar un portal web que permeti cercar les ubicacions dels diferents grups de consum agroecològic, així com dels diferents productors, de les fires i mercats de productes ecològics, dels horts urbans, etc. Des d'aquest portal també s'haurà de poder gestionar la base de dades amb la informació relacionada.

Tutkimuksen tavoite oli selvittää sitä ristiriitaa, joka vallitsee kuluttajien ilmoittaman ja todellisen luomutuotteiden ostokäyttäytymisen välillä. Tätä ristiriitaa tutkittiin selvittämällä ostoprosessin eri osia ja niihin vaikuttavia tekijöitä, kuten sitoutumisastetta, arvoja ja asenteita. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin kyselytutkimusta, jonka aineisto kerättiin kontrolloidulla kyselyllä yhden viikon aikana Lappeenrannan K-citymarketissa.Tulokset osoittivat, että kuluttajat ostavat luomutuotteita, jos ne koetaan omaa itseä hyödyttäviksi, eli tärkeimmät ostamisen syyt olivat hyvä maku, lisäaineettomuus ja terveellisyys. Sen sijaan kollektiivinen etu, kuten ympäristöystävällisyys, ei ollut kovinkaan tärkeä luomunostoperuste. Näyttäisi myös siltä, että ne, jotka arvo- ja ajatusmaailmansa puolesta olisivat potentiaalisia luomutuotteiden kuluttajia, ostavat muita tuotteita tottumuksen perusteella.

Die Qualität ökologischer Produkte wird über den Prozess und nicht am Produkt selbst bestimmt. Die zunehmende Nachfrage nach ökologischen Produkten fordert Methoden, die den Prozess am Produkt zeigen (Authentizitätsprüfung). Eine Literaturstudie für die vorliegende Habilitationsschrift ergab, dass ganzheitliche Verfahren sich dazu besonders eignen. Zu solchen ganzheitlichen Verfahren gehört die Biokristallisation. Bei diesem Verfahren kristallisiert eine Mischung aus Probe und CuCl2 auf einer Glasplatte zu einem Bild, das sowohl visuell, als auch computergestützt ausgewertet werden kann. Es wurden zunächst alle Schritte im Labor dokumentiert und entsprechende Standardarbeitsanweisungen erstellt. Mit einem eigens entwickelten Computerprogramm werden die Bedingungen während der Probenaufbereitung und Kristallisation für jede Probe und jedes Bild erfasst. Mit einer Texturanalyse können auch die für diese Arbeiten erstellte große Menge an Bildern ausgewertet und die Ergebnisse statistisch bearbeitet werden. Damit ist es möglich das Verfahren und Methoden für Weizen- und Möhrenproben zu charakterisieren. Es wurden verschiedene Einflussgrößen untersucht. Das Verfahren ist besonders gegenüber Änderungen in der Probenvorbereitung (z.B. Vermahlung, Mischungsverhältnis) empfindlich. Es wurde sowohl die Methodenstreuung, als auch der Anteil einzelner Schritte an der Gesamtstreuung für Weizen-, Möhren- und Apfelproben ermittelt. Die Verdampfung und Kristallisation hat den größten Anteil an der Gesamtstreuung. Die Durchführung eines Laboreignungstests zeigte, dass die so dokumentierten und charakterisierten Methoden in anderen Laboratorien erfolgreich eingesetzt werden können. Das Verfahren wurde für die nominale Unterscheidung von Weizen-, Möhren- und Apfelproben aus unterschiedlichem Anbau und Verarbeitungsschritten eingesetzt. Weizen-, Möhren- und Apfelproben aus definiertem Anbau können signifikant unterschieden werden. Weizen-, Möhren- und Apfelproben vom Erzeuger (Markt) konnten im Paarvergleich (ökologisch, konventionell) teilweise signifikant getrennt werden. Das Verfahren ist auch für die Charakterisierung von verarbeiteten Proben einsetzbar. Es konnte der Einfluss von Saftherstellung, Erwärmung und Alterung signifikant gezeigt werden. Darüber hinaus lässt sich das Verfahren auf weitere Probenarten anwenden. Das Verfahren arbeitet ganzheitlich, d.h. es werden keine Einzelstoffe analytisch bestimmt, sondern als Ergebnis wird ein Bild erhalten. Die Textur- und Struktureigenschaften dieses Bildes können mit standardisierten Methoden ausgewertet werden.

El plan de empresa, nombrado Huevos del Rancho (HDR) es un proyecto que nació a partir del emprendimiento de dos estudiantes de administración, con ganas de implementar la teoría estudiada en un proyecto real. Esta iniciativa que al principio fue una idea simple, terminó convirtiéndose en un proyecto de vida. Huevos del Rancho se dedica a la producción, distribución y comercialización de huevos orgánicos. Sus productos y procesos cuentan con valores agregados y diferenciados que han permitido generar un modelo único de producción y de distribución del producto en los mercados objetivos. A pesar de que HDR ya inició operaciones en esta actividad de manera empírica en el 2010, sus resultados brindaron a los socios una visión del verdadero potencial que recaía en este negocio. El principal fundamento que se inculcó en los socios fue empezar a pensar en grande, no en negocio, sino en empresa.

In this perspectives article, we reflect upon the existence of chirality in atmospheric aerosol particles. We then show that organic particles collected at a field site in the central Amazon Basin under pristine background conditions during the wet and dry seasons consist of chiral secondary organic material. We show how the chiral response from the aerosol particles can be imaged directly without the need for sample dissolution, solvent extraction, or sample preconcentration. By comparing the chiral-response images with optical images, we show that chiral responses always originate from particles on the filter, but not all aerosol particles produce chiral signals. The intensity of the chiral signal produced by the size resolved particles strongly indicates the presence of chiral secondary organic material in the particle. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings on chiral atmospheric aerosol particles in terms of climate-related properties and source apportionment.

An investigation was performed regarding the application of a mechanically stirred anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor containing immobilized biomass on inert polyurethane foam (AnSBBR) to the treatment of soluble metalworking fluids to remove organic matter and produce methane. The effect of increasing organic matter and reactor fill time, as well as shock load, on reactor stability and efficiency have been analyzed. The 5-L AnSBBR was operated at 30 A degrees C in 8-h cycles, agitation of 400 rpm, and treated 2.0 L effluent per cycle. Organic matter was increased by increasing the influent concentration (500, 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L). Fill times investigated were in the batch mode (fill time 10 min) and fed-batch followed by batch (fill time 4 h). In the batch mode, organic matter removal efficiencies were 87%, 86%, and 80% for influent concentrations of 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mgCOD/L (1.50, 3.12, and 6.08 gCOD/L.d), respectively. At 3,000 mgCOD/L (9.38 gCOD/L.d), operational stability could not be achieved. The reactor managed to maintain stability when a shock load twice as high the feed concentration was applied, evidencing the robustness of the reactor to potential concentration variations in the wastewater being treated. Increasing the fill time to 4 h did not improve removal efficiency, which was 72% for 2,000 mgCOD/L. Thus, gradual feeding did not improve organic matter removal. The concentration of methane formed at 6.08 gCOD/L was 5.20 mmolCH(4), which corresponded to 78% of the biogas composition. The behavior of the reactor during batch and fed-batch feeding could be explained by a kinetic model that considers organic matter consumption, production, and consumption of total volatile acids and methane production.

The purpose of this study was to assess the anaerobic degradation of black liquor with and without additional carbon sources. Batch experiments were conducted using black liquor, from an integrated pulp and paper mill adding ethanol, methanol and nutrients. The PCR/DGGE technique was used to characterize the structure of the microbial community. The addition of extra sources of carbon did not significantly influence the degradation of black liquor under the conditions evaluated and the microbial community was similar in all experiments. It was observed an increase in some members of the archaeal in reactors that had the best efficiencies for removal of black liquor (around 7.5%). Either ethanol or methanol can be used as co-substrates because the produce the same quantitative and qualitative effect.

The increased preference for minimally processed vegetables has been attributed to the health benefits associated with fresh produce and the demand for ready-to-eat salads. In this paper, lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was evaluated for the effects of different cropping systems on the respiratory properties. Lettuce was packaged in low density polyethylene bags and stored in a refrigerator at 4 ºC. The concentration of carbon dioxide and oxygen inside the package was monitored during the storage at zero, three, six, eight, ten and twelve days by gas chromatography. Dry matter variation was measured gravimetrically up to day fourteen of storage. Values of respiratory rate for conventional lettuce increased from day 1 to 3 and remained low, while respiratory rate of the organic lettuce increased three-fold up to day 8, stabilizing at a high level. Variation in dry matter during storage also resulted from differences between the two cultivation systems. The highest content of dry matter was achieved by organic lettuce.
