Tutkielman ensisijaisena tavoitteena oli määrittää pankkien tuloksenjärjestelymahdollisuuksien muutoksia siirryttäessä kansallisesta FAS GAAP -tilinpäätösnormistosta IFRS-normistoon. Tuloksenjärjestelyn ilmiötä käsiteltiin esittelemällä useita koti- ja ulkomaisia tuloksenjärjestelytutkimuksia. Pankeilla on toimialalleen erityisiä kannustimia tuloksenjärjestelyyn. Pankkitoimialalla tuloksenjärjestely on perinteisesti esiintynyt tuloksentasaamisena tilikausien välillä. Tutkimuksessa saatiin selkeä kuva tuloksenjärjestelymahdollisuuksien muutoksesta. IFRS-normiston sisältämä johdon harkintavalta ilmenee tilinpäätöksen laadintaperiaatteiden valinnaisuutena ja standardien laskelmien sisältäminä johdon arvioina ja oletuksina. Harkintavaltaa käyttämällä johto voi vaikuttaa tilinpäätöksen taseeseen ja tulokseen. IFRS-normistossa tilinpäätöksen laadintaperiaatteisiin liittyvä johdon harkintavalta on vähentynyt verrattuna kansalliseen FAS GAAP-tilinpäätöskäytäntöön, mutta IFRS jättää johdolle edelleen harkintavaltaa muutamien kirjaus- ja raportointikäytäntöjen suhteen. Perinteisten tuloksenjärjestelykeinojen rinnalle IFRS:ssä nousevat useiden standardien laskelmien sisältämät johdon arviot ja oletukset tulevaisuuden muuttujista. Omaisuuserien käypään arvoon arvostamisen myötä tilikauden tuloksista saattaa tulla aikaisempaa volatiilimpia. Käypiin arvoihin arvostamisen seurauksena pankit saattavat siirtyä käyttämään sijoitustensa ostoja ja myyntejä tuloksentasauskeinona. FAS GAAP:ssa pankit ovat käyttäneet tuloksentasaamiseen tiettyjä suoriteperusteisia eriä, esimerkiksi luottotappiovarauksia. IFRS tiukentaa varausten tekemisen periaatteita, mutta tuo tilalle lainakannan arvonalentumistestaukseen sisältyvät johdon arviot.

Within generative L2 acquisition research there is a longstanding debate as to what underlies observable differences in L1/L2 knowledge/ performance. On the one hand, Full Accessibility approaches maintain that target L2 syntactic representations (new functional categories and features) are acquirable (e.g., Schwartz & Sprouse, 1996). Conversely, Partial Accessibility approaches claim that L2 variability and/or optionality, even at advanced levels, obtains as a result of inevitable deficits in L2 narrow syntax and is conditioned upon a maturational failure in adulthood to acquire (some) new functional features (e.g., Beck, 1998; Hawkins & Chan, 1997; Hawkins & Hattori, 2006; Tsimpli & Dimitrakopoulou, 2007). The present study tests the predictions of these two sets of approaches with advanced English learners of L2 Brazilian Portuguese (n = 21) in the domain of inflected infinitives. These advanced L2 learners reliably differentiate syntactically between finite verbs, uninflected and inflected infinitives, which, as argued, only supports Full Accessibility approaches. Moreover, we will discuss how testing the domain of inflected infinitives is especially interesting in light of recent proposals that Brazilian Portuguese colloquial dialects no longer actively instantiate them (Lightfoot, 1991; Pires, 2002, 2006; Pires & Rothman, 2009; Rothman, 2007).

Coupling a review of previous studies on the acquisition of grammatical aspects undertaken from contrasting paradigmatic views of second language acquisition (SLA) with new experimental data from L2 Portuguese, the present study contributes to this specific literature as well as general debates in L2 epistemology. We tested 31 adult English learners of L2 Portuguese across three experiments, examining the extent to which they had acquired the syntax and (subtle) semantics of grammatical aspect. Demonstrating that many individuals acquired target knowledge of what we contend is a poverty-of-the-stimulus semantic entailment related to the checking of aspectual features encoded in Portuguese preterit and imperfect morphology, namely, a [±accidental] distinction that obtains in a restricted subset of contexts, we conclude that UG-based approaches to SLA are in a better position to tap and gauge underlying morphosyntactic competence, since based on independent theoretical linguistic descriptions, they make falsifiable predictions that are amenable to empirical scrutiny, seek to describe and explain beyond performance, and can account for L2 convergence on poverty-of-the-stimulus knowledge as well as L2 variability/optionality.

Much recent research in SLA is guided by the hypothesis of L2 interface vulnerability (see Sorace 2005). This study contributes to this general project by examining the acquisition of two classes of subjunctive complement clauses in L2 Spanish: subjunctive complements of volitional predicates (purely syntactic) and subjunctive vs. indicative complements with negated epistemic matrix predicates, where the mood distinction is discourse dependent (thus involving the syntax-discourse interface). We provide an analysis of the volitional subjunctive in English and Spanish, suggesting that English learners of L2 Spanish need to access the functional projection Mood P and an uninterpretable modal feature on the Force head available to them from their formal English register grammar, and simultaneously must unacquire the structure of English for-to clauses. For negated epistemic predicates, our analysis maintains that they need to revalue the modal feature on the Force head from uninterpretable to interpretable, within the L2 grammar.With others (e.g. Borgonovo & Prévost 2003; Borgonovo, Bruhn de Garavito & Prévost 2005) and in line with Sorace's (2000, 2003, 2005) notion of interface vulnerability, we maintain that the latter case is more difficult for L2 learners, which is borne out in the data we present. However, the data also show that the indicative/subjunctive distinction with negated epistemics can be acquired by advanced stages of acquisition, questioning the notion of obligatory residual optionality for all properties which require the integration of syntactic and discourse information.

Several studies of different bilingual groups including L2 learners, child bilinguals, heritage speakers and L1 attriters reveal similar performance on syntax-discourse interface properties such as anaphora resolution (Sorace, 2011 and references therein). Specifically, bilinguals seem to allow more optionality in the interpretation of overt subject pronouns in null subject languages, such as Greek, Italian and Spanish while the interpretation of null subject pronouns is indistinguishable from monolingual natives. Nevertheless, there is some evidence pointing to bilingualism effects on the interpretation of null subject pronouns too in heritage speakers’ grammars (Montrul, 2004) due to some form of ‘arrested’ development in this group of bilinguals. The present study seeks to investigate similarities and differences between two Greek–Swedish bilingual groups, heritage speakers and L1 attriters, in anaphora resolution of null and overt subject pronouns in Greek using a self-paced listening with a sentence-picture matching decision task at the end of each sentence. The two groups differ in crucial ways: heritage speakers were simultaneous or early bilinguals while the L1 attriters were adult learners of the second language, Swedish. Our findings reveal differences from monolingual preferences in the interpretation of the overt pronoun for both heritage and attrited speakers while the differences attested between the two groups in the interpretation of null subject pronouns affect only response times with heritage being faster than attrited speakers. We argue that our results do not support an age of onset or differential input effects on bilingual performance in pronoun resolution.

Sorace (2000, 2005) has claimed that while L2 learners can easily acquire properties of L2 narrow syntax they have significant difficulty with regard to interpretation and the discourse distribution of related properties, resulting in so-called residual optionality. However, there is no consensus as to what this difficulty indicates. Is it related to an insurmountable grammatical representational deficit (in the sense of representation deficit approaches; e.g. Beck 1998, Franceschina 2001, Hawkins 2005), is it due to cross-linguistic interference, or is it just a delay due to a greater complexity involved in the acquisition of interface-conditioned properties? In this article, I explore the L2 distribution of null and overt subject pronouns of English speaking learners of L2 Spanish. While intermediate learners clearly have knowledge of the syntax of Spanish null subjects, they do not have target-like pragmatic knowledge of their distribution with overt subjects. The present data demonstrate, however, that this difficulty is overcome at highly advanced stages of L2 development, thus suggesting that properties at the syntax-pragmatics interface are not destined for inevitable fossilization.

This study aims to test Robertson’s lexical transfer principle, which posits that Chinese learners use demonstratives (particularly this) and the numeral one as markers of definiteness and indefiniteness. This is tested by analysing Chinese learners’ written production collected from the Spoken and Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners 2.0 (SWECCL 2.0). The purpose is to understand the variation of article usage by adult Chinese learners of English. More specifically, the study examines to what extent articles, possessive and demonstrative pronouns are used in Chinese learners’ English and how definite and indefinite articles are used by the Chinese learners. Findings suggest that Robertson’s lexical transfer principle was corroborated by the present study. In addition, Chinese learners prefer to use demonstrative determiners, the possessive determiner our, and the numeral one to perform the function of marking definiteness and indefiniteness. In particular, the learners try to use the demonstrative determiners that and this in the anaphoric function instead of the definite article, and the demonstrative determiner those is frequently used in the cataphoric function. What is more, the learners use the numeral one as a marker of indefiniteness, and it is also used as a marker of definiteness in the anaphoric function. Further, the possessive determiner our is used as a marker of definiteness in larger situation uses referring to something unique. To this end, the study is able to show that the definite article is used to perform the function of marking indefiniteness, and in some particular contexts the definite article functions as a Chinese specifier in Chinese learners’ English. Also, the indefinite article is frequently used in quantifier phrases but is rarely used in other functions. There are three main reasons that may explain why Chinese learners use determiners variously. Firstly, the choice of determiners by Chinese learners is influenced by linguistic contexts. Secondly, because of learning strategies, Chinese learners try to ignore the anaphoric function and cataphoric function that they are not yet ready to process in article usage. Thirdly, interlanguage grammar influences the optionality in the use of articles.

Las empresas en situación económica negativa, recurren en España a los Expedientes de Regulación de Empleo que es la figura legal que permite ajustar sus plantillas y cuya utilización se acrecienta en épocas de crisis. El objetivo de esta investigación se focaliza en la integración de la Teoría de Opciones Reales en los proyectos organizativos de recursos humanos, en particular en el estudio y aplicación de la opción de contracción y de la opción de aplazamiento a los proyectos de desarrollo de los Expedientes de Regulación de Empleo. Las opciones reales son una herramienta de gestión, novedosa y contrastada, que posibilita realizar la valoración de los Expedientes de Regulación de Empleo tomando en consideración las incertidumbres futuras, lo que permite cuantificar mejor el resultado de la decisión y supone un avance sobre la valoración realizada de forma estática. Dos aspectos clave ha sido necesario resolver. En primer lugar determinar la fuente de incertidumbre que ponga en valor las opciones reales para este tipo de proyectos y como consecuencia desarrollar los procedimientos para obtener el valor de la opción. La puesta en valor de la opción de contracción permite, a partir de la consideración de la demanda como factor de incertidumbre, desarrollar un modelo que proporciona el valor óptimo del número de contratos de trabajo a extinguir, de modo que sitúa a la organización en la mejor posición para la toma de decisiones. La resolución del modelo se logra con la ayuda de la herramienta “The Newsvendor Model”, que facilita la obtención el valor óptimo. En la aplicación de la opción de aplazamiento se ha concluido asimismo, que la volatilidad de la demanda es la fuente de incertidumbre que hace viable la opción y a partir de dicha incertidumbre se ha desarrollado un procedimiento basado en el árbol binomial que permite obtener su valor. Una vez desarrollados los dos modelos para las opciones de contracción y aplazamiento, se ha elaborado un modelo conjunto con ambas opciones, integrando los resultados obtenidos en cada caso. Para validar los modelos obtenidos se presenta su aplicación al caso real de una empresa en situación económica negativa que requiere la necesidad de llevar a cabo un Expediente de Regulación de Empleo, lo que ha permitido comprobar la utilidad de dichos desarrollos, al obtener resultados que facilitan la toma de decisiones y que presentan soluciones que pueden ser más equilibradas para los trabajadores de la empresa, aspecto clave a tener en cuenta, dado el coste personal, familiar y social de este tipo de proyectos. La integración de las opciones reales en la gestión de recursos humanos tiene un amplio campo de aplicación, dadas las diferentes inversiones que se pueden llevar a cabo sobre el capital humano. Aunque esta investigación se ha focalizado en la opcionalidad de las inversiones para el ajuste de plantilla, existen otro tipo de inversiones en recursos humanos, como son las dedicadas a formación, motivación, adecuación o incorporación de personal, que también estarán sujetas a opcionalidad si existen incertidumbres a futuro. Con el objetivo de avanzar en el estudio y aplicación de las opciones reales a estas inversiones, se presenta un marco conceptual que identifica las bases de partida en lo referente a los retornos de las inversiones y las incertidumbres futuras. Con los resultados obtenidos en esta investigación se entiende que se ha conseguido el objetivo de aplicar la Teoría de Opciones Reales a los Expedientes de Regulación de Empleo y con ello establecer la posibilidad de mejorar las implicaciones sociales de estos proyectos dentro de la empresa y en la sociedad. ABSTRACT During crisis times, like the one Spain has been going through on the last years, the Collective Dismissal Procedure is an important issue to be considered within companies that are having a negative economic situation. This research focuses on the integration of the Real Options Theory for organizational projects in the management of human resources, and particularly the study and inclusion of the option to contract and the deferral option in Collective Dismissal Procedures. The Real Options Theory, an innovative management tool that has been proven as correct, help to improve the assessment of the Collective Dismissal Procedures using the dynamic demand instead of the static demand, giving a better quantification of the decision that is going to be taken. Two main issues which are hoped to be resolve are examined: the search for a source of uncertainty to make the real options viable for this type of projects, and consequently the development of a procedure to obtain the value of the option. The option to contract allows, from the consideration of the demand as a factor of uncertainty, to develop a model obtaining the optimal value in the reduction of the workforce, therefore allowing the organization to place itself in the best position for the decision making. The resolution of this model is achieved with the help of "The Newsvendor Model" tool, which facilitates obtaining the optimal value. The analysis performed in the deferral option also concluded that the volatility of demand is the source of the uncertainty that makes the option viable and the procedure developed by the binomial tree is the tool that enables the value of the option to be found. Once developed two models for contraction and deferment options, a joint model has been developed including both options by integrating the results obtained in each case. To validate the models, the real case of a company in negative economic situation requiring the need to carry out a procedure for collective redundancies is applied. This has demonstrated the usefulness of this kind of development that can deliver results to improve the decision making and provide more balanced solutions for company employees, key consideration given the impact on personal, family life and social environment of these Collective Dismissal Procedures. The integration of real options in the management of human resources has broad scope, given the different investments that can be performed on the human capital. Although this research has focused on the optionality of investments for downsizing, there are other investments in human resources for training, motivation, arrangement or incorporation of staff that are also subject to optionality if there are future uncertainties. With the aim of advancing the study and application of real options to these investments, a conceptual framework is presented that identifies the basis of research in terms of the investment returns and future uncertainties. With the results obtained on this research it is clearly defined the objectives for which this work was started for, the application of the Real Options Theory to the Collective Dismissal Procedure. And thereby achieve the final goal of improving the social impact of these projects within a company and society.

Introduction-The design of the UK MPharm curriculum is driven by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) accreditation process and the EU directive (85/432/EEC).[1] Although the RPSGB is informed about teaching activity in UK Schools of Pharmacy (SOPs), there is no database which aggregates information to provide the whole picture of pharmacy education within the UK. The aim of the teaching, learning and assessment study [2] was to document and map current programmes in the 16 established SOPs. Recent developments in programme delivery have resulted in a focus on deep learning (for example, through problem based learning approaches) and on being more student centred and less didactic through lectures. The specific objectives of this part of the study were (a) to quantify the content and modes of delivery of material as described in course documentation and (b) having categorised the range of teaching methods, ask students to rate how important they perceived each one for their own learning (using a three point Likert scale: very important, fairly important or not important). Material and methods-The study design compared three datasets: (1) quantitative course document review, (2) qualitative staff interview and (3) quantitative student self completion survey. All 16 SOPs provided a set of their undergraduate course documentation for the year 2003/4. The documentation variables were entered into Excel tables. A self-completion questionnaire was administered to all year four undergraduates, using a pragmatic mixture of methods, (n=1847) in 15 SOPs within Great Britain. The survey data were analysed (n=741) using SPSS, excluding non-UK students who may have undertaken part of their studies within a non-UK university. Results and discussion-Interviews showed that individual teachers and course module leaders determine the choice of teaching methods used. Content review of the documentary evidence showed that 51% of the taught element of the course was delivered using lectures, 31% using practicals (includes computer aided learning) and 18% small group or interactive teaching. There was high uniformity across the schools for the first three years; variation in the final year was due to the project. The average number of hours per year across 15 schools (data for one school were not available) was: year 1: 408 hours; year 2: 401 hours; year 3: 387 hours; year 4: 401 hours. The survey showed that students perceived lectures to be the most important method of teaching after dispensing or clinical practicals. Taking the very important rating only: 94% (n=694) dispensing or clinical practicals; 75% (n=558) lectures; 52% (n=386) workshops, 50% (n=369) tutorials, 43% (n=318) directed study. Scientific laboratory practices were rated very important by only 31% (n=227). The study shows that teaching of pharmacy to undergraduates in the UK is still essentially didactic through a high proportion of formal lectures and with high levels of staff-student contact. Schools consider lectures still to be the most cost effective means of delivering the core syllabus to large cohorts of students. However, this does limit the scope for any optionality within teaching, the scope for small group work is reduced as is the opportunity to develop multi-professional learning or practice placements. Although novel teaching and learning techniques such as e-learning have expanded considerably over the past decade, schools of pharmacy have concentrated on lectures as the best way of coping with the huge expansion in student numbers. This dissertation investigates the acquisition of oblique relative clauses in L2 Spanish by English and Moroccan Arabic speakers in order to understand the role of previous linguistic knowledge and its interaction with Universal Grammar on the one hand, and the relationship between grammatical knowledge and its use in real-time, on the other hand. Three types of tasks were employed: an oral production task, an on-line self-paced grammaticality judgment task, and an on-line self-paced reading comprehension task. Results indicated that the acquisition of oblique relative clauses in Spanish is a problematic area for second language learners of intermediate proficiency in the language, regardless of their native language. In particular, this study has showed that, even when the learners’ native language shares the main properties of the L2, i.e., fronting of the obligatory preposition (Pied-Piping), there is still room for divergence, especially in production and timed grammatical intuitions. On the other hand, reaction time data have shown that L2 learners can and do converge at the level of sentence processing, showing exactly the same real-time effects for oblique relative clauses that native speakers had. Processing results demonstrated that native and non-native speakers alike are able to apply universal processing principles such as the Minimal Chain Principle (De Vincenzi, 1991) even when the L2 learners still have incomplete grammatical representations, a result that contradicts some of the predictions of the Shallow Structure Hypothesis (Clahsen & Felser, 2006). Results further suggest that the L2 processing and comprehension domains may be able to access some type of information that it is not yet available to other grammatical modules, probably because transfer of certain L1 properties occurs asymmetrically across linguistic domains. In addition, this study also explored the Null-Prep phenomenon in L2 Spanish, and proposed that Null-Prep is an interlanguage stage, fully available and accounted within UG, which intermediate L2 as well as first language learners go through in the development of pied-piping oblique relative clauses. It is hypothesized that this intermediate stage is the result of optionality of the obligatory preposition in the derivation, when it is not crucial for the meaning of the sentence, and when the DP is going to be in an A-bar position, so it can get default case. This optionality can be predicted by the Bottleneck Hypothesis (Slabakova, 2009c) if we consider that these prepositions are some sort of functional morphology. This study contributes to the field of SLA and L2 processing in various ways. First, it demonstrates that the grammatical representations may be dissociated from grammatical processing in the sense that L2 learners, unlike native speakers, can present unexpected asymmetries such as a convergent processing but divergent grammatical intuitions or production. This conclusion is only possible under the assumption of a modular language system. Finally, it contributes to the general debate of generative SLA since in argues for a fully UG-constrained interlanguage grammar.
