As the paper’s subtitle suggests broadband has had a remarkably checkered trajectory in Australia. It was synonymous with the early 1990s information superhighway and seemed to presage a moment in which “content is [to be] king”. It disappeared almost entirely as a public priority in the mid to late 1990s as intrastructure and content were disconnected in services frameworks focused on information and communication technologies. And it came back in the 2000s as a critical infrastructure for innovation and the knowledge economy. But this time content was not king but rather an intermediate input at the service of innovating industries and processes. Broadband was a critical infrastructure for the digitally-based creative industries. Today the quality of the broadband infrastructure in Australia—itself an outcome of these different policy frameworks—is identified as “fraudband” holding back business, creativity and consumer uptake. In this paper I use the checkered trajectory of broadband on Australian political and policy horizons as a stepping off point to reflect on the ideas governing these changing governmental and public settings. This history enables me to explore how content and infrastructure are simultaneously connected and disconnected in our thinking. And, finally, I want to make some remarks about the way communication, particularly media communication, has been marginally positioned after being, initially so apparently central.

Within the communicative space online Social Network Sites (SNS) afford, Niche Social Networks Sites (NSNS) have emerged around particular geographic, demographic or topic-based communities to provide what broader SNS do not: specified and targeted content for an engaged and interested community. Drawing on a research project developed at the Queensland University of Technology in conjunction with the Australian Smart Services Cooperative Research Centre that produced an NSNS based around Adventure Travel, this paper outlines the main drivers for community creation and sustainability within NSNS. The paper asks what factors motivate users to join and stay with these sites and what, if any, common patterns can be noted in their formation. It also outlines the main barriers to online participation and content creation in NSNS, and the similarities and differences in SNS and NSNS business models. Having built a community of 100 registered members, the staywild.com.au project was a living laboratory, enabling us to document the steps taken in producing a NSNS and cultivating and retaining active contributors. The paper incorporates observational analysis of user-generated content (UGC) and user profile submissions, statistical analysis of site usage, and findings from a survey of our membership pool in noting areas of success and of failure. In drawing on our project in this way we provide a template for future iterations of NSNS initiation and development across various other social settings: not only niche communities, but also the media and advertising with which they engage and interact. Positioned within the context of online user participation and UGC research, our paper concludes with a discussion of the ways in which the tools afforded by NSNS extend earlier understandings of online ‘communities of interest’. It also outlines the relevance of our research to larger questions about the diversity of the social media ecology.

The desired species identified in this survey include mullets, catfishes, fast growing fish predators, species for control of weeds and grass it, ponds, cichlids and shrimps. Five coastal states: Lagos, Ondo, Bendel, Rivers, and Cross River were covered in the studies. Investigations were also carried into the major rivers and their tributaries. A combination of the estimation methods of Le Cren, (1962) and Pitcher and Mac Donald (1973) was employed in the analysis of data. From the detailed data collected from (1978-1985), the survey indicated that about 100 million fish seeds can be collected annually from Nigerian waters using appropriate gear-seine nets, cast nets, and fish traps. Of this number, 60% is available along the coastal belt of the country while 40% is in the major rivers, their tributaries and swamps. At the present level of fish culture development in Nigeria, this is more than enough, even after allowing for 50% mortality due to handling and transportation stress

Nypa fruticans occurs in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River State, Nigeria; invading an estimated area of 821 Km super(2) mangrove dominated swamps. Human activities such as tree felling, urbanization, oil and gas exploration and exploitation and other activities led to the interference in the normal mangrove by the Nypa palm. Lack of utilization by the local population of the Nypa palm as in into-pacification has increased the population over the years. The effect includes the reduction in primary and secondary productivity, disruption of food chain and erosion of riverbanks. The eradication of the Nypa palm from the Niger delta mangrove ecosystem and replacement with red and white mangroves will restore the ecosystem health and enhance biological diversity

An investigative study was carried out on the growth performance and nutrient utilization of (Clarias gariepinus) fingerlings fed earthworm meal as a replacement for fish meal. A large collection of earthworm was done during the peak of rainy season (July-August) within the University environment. They were then ovens dried. Used as test ingredients were 0% (Diet 1) 50% (Diet 2) and 1000% (Diet u). The trials were conducted in plastic bowls (40-L capacity) under laboratory conditions. The diets were fed at 5% body weight to fish; the fish were stocked at 10 fish per bowl. The evaluation of the growth parameters showed that there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in mean weight gain (MWG) specific growth rate (SGR) food conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ration (PER) and survival among the fish fed the experimental diets

La enfermedad celíaca ha ido aumentando de manera considerable los últimos años, calculándose que la padece en torno a un 1% de la población europea. En el País Vasco se estima que hay más de 6.000 afectados, los cuales, al igual que los del resto de comunidades autónomas, lidian diariamente con precios prohibitivos, falta de ayudas económicas y la incomprensión del resto de la sociedad por falta de sensibilización, entre otras cosas. Frente a esta situación, ¿quién lucha por los derechos de este porcentaje de la población que se estima que seguirá aumentando? Aquí entra en acción la Federación de Asociaciones de Celiacos de España (FACE) y la Asociación celiaca de Euskadi (EZE) a nivel de País Vasco, que se ha ido ocupando los últimos 33 años de unir a todos los que sufren este problema para luchar por sus derechos, mediante una entidad sin ánimo de lucro. Tal y como afirma el escritor Peter Ferdinand Drucker es de gran importancia darle una orientación estratégica no sólo a las entidades lucrativas, sino también a aquellas entidades no lucrativas como EZE, cuyo fin es benéfico-social y es por ello que se lleva a cabo el presente proyecto. Para ello se desarrolla primero un análisis externo del sector de las organizaciones no lucrativas, seguido por uno interno de EZE en el que se conocerán los recursos de los que dispone la entidad, pasando a realizar un diagnóstico de la empresa (DAFO) en el que se plasmarán las “Debilidades”, “Amenazas”, “Fortalezas” y “Oportunidades”. Con todo esto se propondrán unos objetivos que se materializarán en estrategias llevadas a cabo mediante planes de acción que utilizan herramientas basadas en las denominadas 4 P´s (Producto, Precio, Plaza y Promoción). Finalmente se establecerá un plan de acción y un sistema de control del mismo.
