A unique characteristic of soft matter is its ability to self-assemble into larger structures. Characterizing these structures is crucial for their applications. In the first part of this work, I investigated DNA-organic hybrid material by means of Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) and Fluorescence Cross-Correlation Spectroscopy (FCCS). DNA-organic hybrid materials, a novel class of hybrid materials composed of synthetic macromolecules and oligodeoxynucleotide segmenta, are mostly amphiphilic and can self-assemble into supramolecular structures in aqueous solution. A hybrid material of a fluorophore, perylenediimide (PDI), and a DNA segment (DNA-PDI) has been developed in Prof. A. Hermann’s group (University of Groningen). This novel material has the ability to form aggregates through pi-pi stacking between planar PDIs and can be traced in solution due to the fluorescence of PDI. I have determined the diffusion coefficient of DNA-PDI conjugates in aqueous solution by means of FCS. In addition, I investigated whether such DNA-PDIs form aggregates with certain structure, for instance dimers. rnOnce the DNA hybrid material self-assemble into supermolecular structures for instance into micelles, the single molecules do not necessarily stay in one specific micelle. Actually, a single molecule may enter and leave micelles constantly. The average residence time of a single molecule in a certain micelle depends on the nature of the molecule. I have chosen DNA-b-polypropylene oxide (PPO) as model molecules and investigated the residence time of DNA-b-PPO molecules in their according micelles by means of FCCS.rnBesides the DNA hybrid materials, polymeric colloids can also form ordered structures once they are brought to an air/water interface. Here, hexagonally densely packed monolayers can be generated. These monolayers can be deposited onto different surfaces as coating layers. In the second part of this work, I investigated the mechanical properties of such colloidal monolayers using micromechanical cantilevers. When a coating layer is deposited on a cantilever, it can modify the elasticity of the cantilever. This variation can be reflected either by a deflection or by a resonance frequency shift of the cantilever. In turn, detecting these changes provides information about the mechanical properties of the coating layer. rnIn the second part of this work, polymeric colloidal monolayers were coated on a cantilever and homogenous polymer films of a few hundred nanometers in thickness were generated from these colloidal monolayers by thermal annealing or organic vapor annealing. Both the film formation process and the mechanical properties of these resulting homogenous films were investigated by means of cantilever. rnElastic property changes of the coating film, for example upon absorption of organic vapors, induce a deflection of the cantilever. This effect enables a cantilever to detect target molecules, when the cantilever is coated with an active layer with specific affinity to target molecules. In the last part of this thesis, I investigated the applicability of suitably functionalized micromechanical cantilevers as sensors. In particular, glucose sensitive polymer brushes were grafted on a cantilever and the deflection of this cantilever was measured during exposure to glucose solution. rn

Despite the widespread use of paper, plastic or ceramics in dielectric capacitors, water has not been commonly used as a dielectric due to its tendency to become conductive as it easily leaches ions from the environment. We show here that when water is confined between graphene oxide sheets, it can retain its insulating nature and behave as a dielectric. A hydrated graphene oxide film was used as a dielectric spacer to construct a prototype water-dielectric capacitor. The capacitance depends on the water content of the hydrated GO film as well as the voltage applied to the device. Our results show that the capacitance per unit area of the GO film is in the range of 100–800 mF cm 2, which is 5–40 times that of the double layer capacitance per surface area of activated carbon.

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to study the surface nanostructure of the epitaxial film Nd2/3Sr1/3MnO3 that shows giant magnetoresistance. The surface morphology of the film consists of a number of overlapping platelets of about 30–35 Å diameter that grow at an angle of 35°–45° to the surface normal. The peak to peak height of the platelets are multiples of the c‐axis lattice parameter of 7.85 Å showing that the growth of the platelets takes place by the layer by layer addition of one formula unit. The mean surface roughness is about 10 Å. In the range of a few microns the film exhibits no defects or dislocations. The film is unstable in ambient atmosphere and tends to get covered by an adsorbate layer. Tip‐surface interactions cause the adsorbate to be dislodged exposing the surface nanostructure. The degradation of the film in real time when imaged in air was recorded. The adsorbates increase the surface roughness of the film.

Silicon-rich silicon oxide (SRSO) films are prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method at the substrate temperature of 200degreesC. The effect of rapid thermal annealing and hydrogen plasma treatment on tire microstructure and light-emission of SRSO films are investigated in detail using micro-Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. It is found that the phase-separation degree of the films decreases with increasing annealing temperature from 300 to 600degreesC, while it increases with increasing annealing temperature from 600 to 900degreesC. The light-emission of the films are enhanced with increasing annealing temperature up to 500degreesC, while it is rapidly reduced when the annealing temperature exceeds 600degreesC. The peak position of the PL spectrum blueshifts by annealing at the temperature of 300degreesC, then it red-shifts with further raising annealing temperature. The following hydrogen plasma treatment results in a disproportionate increase of the PL intensity and a blueshift or redshift of the peak positions, depending on the pristine annealing temperature. It is thought that the size of amorphous silicon clusters, surface structure of the clusters and the distribution of hydrogen in the films can be changed during the annealing procedure. The results indicate that not only cluster size but also surface state of the clusters plays an important role in the determination of electronic structure of the amorphous silicon cluster and recombination process of light-generated carriers.

The surfactant-capped ZnS nanoparticulate multilayer film has been fabricated by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. ZnS LB firm was investigated by the small-angle x-ray diffraction(XRD), atomic force microscopy(AFM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The results indicate that ZnS nanoparticulate LB film is one-dimensional superlattice.

Non-stoichiometric mixed-valent molybdenum(VI, V) oxide film was grown on carbon substrates by the electrodeposition method. Responses of the prepared molybdenum oxide thin films to potential and to different solution acidities were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the corresponding morphological changes of the film were monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of the molybdenum oxide film show that the characteristic domed structure on the film surface increased during the transition from the oxidized state to the reduced state without signification change in the KMS surface roughness value. Furthermore, AFM studies show that the solution acidity has great effect on the morphology of the films, and the films undergo a homogenizing process with increasing pH of the solutions. A novel method of electrochemical growth was developed for layer-by-layer film formation and proven more advantageous than the commonly used immersion growth in obtaining more uniform multilayer assemblies, as well as being able to proceed in salt-containing solutions without competitive adsorption from the salt ions. We have investigated the early stages in the adsorption process of C60 molecules on a highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) substrate. C60 powder was thermally evaporated in UHV of 10−8 Pa conditions onto a freshly cleaved HOPG surface. We did not observe individual fullerenes on the substrate for the case of short deposition times and low evaporation rates. However, small islands of C60 molecules with an fcc structure could be observed when the deposition rate was about 0.2 nm/min and the total thickness was above 1 nm. The islands did not grow in the vicinity of the HOPG steps. The typical lateral dimensions of these islands were of the order of a few hundred square nanometers, having thickness of up to five monolayers. We modified the shapes and positions of these islands by the STM tip, using a small (less than 1 V) bias voltage.

Post-weld heat-treatment (PWHT) was applied to NiTi weldments to improve the corrosion behaviour by modifying the microstructure and surface composition. The surface oxide film on the weldments is principally TiO2, together with some Ti, TiO, and Ti2O3. The surface Ti/Ni ratio of the weldments after PWHT is increased. The oxide film formed in Hanks’ solution is thicker on the weldments after PWHT. The pitting resistance of the weldments is increased by PWHT. The galvanic effect in the weldments is very small. The weldment with PWHT at 350 °C shows the best corrosion resistance among other heat-treated weldments in this study.

Poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate) (PS-PMMA) ionomers with several degrees of sulfonation were synthesized and characterized by infrared, UV-vis, and NMR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Stable Langmuir films could be produced with PS-PMMA with 3 and 6 mol % of sulfonation, while PS-PMMA 8% exhibited material loss to the water subphase, probably due to its higher solubility. Surface pressure and surface potential isotherms with PS-PMMA 3% spread onto salt-containing subphases pointed to a film behavior characteristic of the polyelectrolyte effect, where charge repulsion governs the film properties. The Langmuir-Blodgett films of this ionomer were successfully transferred onto various substrates, as confirmed by UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopies. Using cycling voltammetry, we show that LB films from PS-PMMA 3% can be applied in selective sensing of dopamine, even in the presence of interferents such as ascorbic acid.

The electrochemical behaviour of potentiodynamically formed thin anodic films of polycrystalline tin in aqueous sodium bicarbonate solutions (pH approximate to 8.3) were studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Different equivalent circuits corresponding to various potential regions were employed to account for the electrochemical processes taking place under each condition. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. This work presents results concerning the preparation of redispersible tin oxide nanoparticles achieved by using Tiron molecule ((OH)(2)C(6)H(2) (SO(3)Na)(2)) as surface modifying agent. The adsorption isotherm measurements show that an amount of 10 wt.% of Tiron is need to recover the SnO(2) nanoparticles surface with a monolayer. These nanoparticles can be easily redispersed in tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide at pH greater than or equal to11 until a powder concentration of 12 vol.% of tin. Under these conditions, hydrodynamic particle size is about 7 nm and increases until 52 nm at pH 6 due to the aggregation phenomenon. The time evolution of the viscoelastic properties indicates that the suspensions at pH 12.5, containing 12 vol.% tin oxide and 10 wt.% of surface modifier are kinetically stable. After thermal treatment at different temperature the powder characterisation evidences that the presence of Tiron monolayer at the nanoparticles surface increases the thermal stability of the porous texture and prevent the micropore size growth. This set of results contributes to satisfy the demand for more controlled synthesis of nanoparticles with high thermal stability as required for fabrication of ultrafiltration ceramic membranes. A brief overview of optical monitoring for vacuum and wet bench film deposition processes is presented. Interferometric and polarimetric measurements are combined with regard to simultaneous real-time monitoring of refractive index and physical thickness. Monitor stability and accuracy are verified with transparent oil standards. This double optical technique is applied to dip coating with a multi-component Zirconyl Chloride aqueous solution, whose time varying refractive index and physical thickness curves indicate significant sensitivity to changes of film flow properties during the process.
