Previous studies have showed that SIN-1, a nitric oxide (NO) donor, injected into the dorsolateral column of the periaqueductal gray (dlPAG) induces flight reactions. This drug, however, can also produce peroxynitrite, which may interfere in this effect. In addition, it is also unknown if this effect is mediated by local activation of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC). The aims of this study, therefore, were (1) to investigate if NOC-9 (6-(2-Hydroxy-1-methyl-2-nitrosohydrazino)-N-methyl-1-hexanamine), a NO donor that does not produce peroxynitrite, would produce flight reactions after intra-dlPAG administration similar to those induced by SIN-1; (2) to verify if these responses could be prevented by local injection of a selective guanylate cyclase inhibitor (ODQ). Male Wistar rats (n = 5-12) with cannulae aimed at the dlPAG received injections of TRIS (pH 10.0, 0.5 mu l), NOC-9 (75 and 150 nmol), saline or SIN-1 (200 nmol) and were placed in an open arena for 10 min. In a subsequent experiment animals (n = 7-8) were pretreated with ODQ (1 nmol/0.5 mu l) before receiving NOC-9 150 nmol. NOC-9 induced a significant dose-dependent increase in flight reactions in the first minute after injection (% of animals displaying flight: vehicle = 0%, NOC 75 = 67%. NOC 150 = 75%). SIN-1 had a similar effect (100% of animals showing flight) but the effects lasted longer (10 min) than those of NOC-9. The effect of NOC-9 (150 nmol) was prevented by pretreatment with ODQ (% of animals displaying flight: vehicle + NOC 150 = 71 %, ODQ + NOC 150 = 37%). The results suggest that NO donors injected into the dlPAG induce defensive responses that are not mediated by secondary peroxynitrite production. Moreover, they also indicate that these defensive responses depend on activation of local sGC. The data strengthen the proposal that NO can modulate defensive reactions in the dlPAG. Many-core platforms based on Network-on-Chip (NoC [Benini and De Micheli 2002]) present an emerging technology in the real-time embedded domain. Although the idea to group the applications previously executed on separated single-core devices, and accommodate them on an individual many-core chip offers various options for power savings, cost reductions and contributes to the overall system flexibility, its implementation is a non-trivial task. In this paper we address the issue of application mapping onto a NoCbased many-core platform when considering fundamentals and trends of current many-core operating systems, specifically, we elaborate on a limited migrative application model encompassing a message-passing paradigm as a communication primitive. As the main contribution, we formulate the problem of real-time application mapping, and propose a three-stage process to efficiently solve it. Through analysis it is assured that derived solutions guarantee the fulfilment of posed time constraints regarding worst-case communication latencies, and at the same time provide an environment to perform load balancing for e.g. thermal, energy, fault tolerance or performance reasons. We also propose several constraints regarding the topological structure of the application mapping, as well as the inter- and intra-application communication patterns, which efficiently solve the issues of pessimism and/or intractability when performing the analysis.

Cities are increasingly expected to be creative, inventive and to exhibit intense expressivity. In the past decades many cities have experienced growing pressure to produce and stage cultural events of different sorts and to develop new strategies that optimize competitive advantages, in order to promote themselves and to boost and sell their image. Often these actions have relied on heavy public investment and major private corporation sponsoring, but it is not always clear or measured how successful and reproductive these investments have been. In the context of strained public finances and profound economic crisis of European peripheral countries, events that emerge from local communities and have low budgets, which manage to create significant fluxes of visitors and visibility, assume an increased interest. In order to reflect and sketch possible answers, we look to an emerging body of literature concerning creative cities, and we focus on the organisation of a particular cultural event and its impact and assimilation into a medium size Portuguese city. This paper looks at the two editions (2011 and 2012) of one of such events – Noc Noc – organized by a local association in the city of Guimarães, Portugal. Inspired by similar events, Noc Noc is based on creating transient spaces of culture which are explored by artists and audiences, by transforming numerous homes into ephemeral convivial and playful social ‘public’ environments. The event is based on a number of cultural venues/homes scattered around the old and newer city, which allows for an informal urban exploration and an autonomous rambling and getting lost along streets. This strategy not only disrupts the cleavages between public and private space permitting for various transgressions, but it also disorders normative urban experiences and unsettles the dominant role of the city council as the culture patron of the large majority of events. Guimarães, an UNESCO World Heritage City was the European Capital of Culture in 2012, with a public investment of roughly 73 million euro. By interviewing a sample of people who have hosted these transitory art performances and exhibitions, sometimes doubling as artists, the events’ organizers and by experience both editions of the event, this paper illustrates how urban citizens’ engagement and motivations in a low budget cultural event can strengthen community ties. Furthermore, it also questions the advantages of large scale high budget events, and how this event may be seen as unconscious counter movement against a commodification of cultural events and everyday urban experience at large, engaging with the concepts of staging and authenticity.

Given the significant impact that cultural events may have in local communities and the inherent organization complexity, it is important to understand their specificities. Most of the times cultural events disregard marketing and often marketing is distant from art. Thus an analysis of an inside perspective might bring significant returns to the organization of such an event. This paper considers the three editions (2011, 2012 and 2013) of a cultural event – Noc Noc – organized by a local association in the city of Guimarães, Portugal. Its format is based in analogous events, as Noc Noc intends to convert everyday spaces (homes, commercial outlets and a number of other buildings) into cultural spaces, processed and transformed by artists, hosts and audiences. By interviewing a sample of people (20) who have hosted this cultural event, sometimes doubling as artists, and by experiencing the three editions of the event, this paper illustrates how the internal public understands this particular cultural event, analyzing specifically their motivations, ways of acting and participating, as well as their relationship with the public, with the organization of the event and with art in general. Results support that artists and hosts motivations must be identified in a timely and appropriate moment, as well as their views of this particular cultural event, in order to keep them participating, since low budget cultural events such as this one may have a key role in small scale cities.

“Many-core” systems based on a Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture offer various opportunities in terms of performance and computing capabilities, but at the same time they pose many challenges for the deployment of real-time systems, which must fulfill specific timing requirements at runtime. It is therefore essential to identify, at design time, the parameters that have an impact on the execution time of the tasks deployed on these systems and the upper bounds on the other key parameters. The focus of this work is to determine an upper bound on the traversal time of a packet when it is transmitted over the NoC infrastructure. Towards this aim, we first identify and explore some limitations in the existing recursive-calculus-based approaches to compute the Worst-Case Traversal Time (WCTT) of a packet. Then, we extend the existing model by integrating the characteristics of the tasks that generate the packets. For this extended model, we propose an algorithm called “Branch and Prune” (BP). Our proposed method provides tighter and safe estimates than the existing recursive-calculus-based approaches. Finally, we introduce a more general approach, namely “Branch, Prune and Collapse” (BPC) which offers a configurable parameter that provides a flexible trade-off between the computational complexity and the tightness of the computed estimate. The recursive-calculus methods and BP present two special cases of BPC when a trade-off parameter is 1 or ∞, respectively. Through simulations, we analyze this trade-off, reason about the implications of certain choices, and also provide some case studies to observe the impact of task parameters on the WCTT estimates.

First, North Last i Negative First. Un cop tenim els routers implementats es disposa un estudi dels diferents algorismes i com cadascun d'aquests actuen en front uns mateixos estímuls per tal de crear una comparativa entre ells que ens faciliti una elecció a priori.

Aim: Biokinetics and dosimetry of 111In-DOTA-NOC-ATE (NOCATE) and 111In-DTPA-octreotide (Octreoscan?, OCTREO) were comparatively studied in the same patients. Patients and Methods: Seventeen patients (10 males, 7 females), mean age 60 years referred for an Octreoscan? because of carcinoid (N=9), unspecified neurodendocrine tumors (N=6), thymoma (N=1) or medullary thyroid carcinoma (N=1) accepted a second study with NOCATE. Four patients had no detectable tumor at the time of scanning. Whole-body (WB) anterior-posterior scans were recorded 0.5 (100% reference scan), 4, 24 and 48 hrs (N=17) and 120 hrs (N=6) after injection. OCTREO (178±15 MBq) preceded NOCATE (108±14 MBq) imaging with 16±5 days in 16 patients while 1 patient had first NOCATE followed 14 days later by OCTREO. Blood samples were taken 5, 15, 30, 60, 240 and 1440 min after injection. Background corrected geometric mean counts of WB, lung, kidney, liver, spleen and blood counts expressed in % of the initial composite WB and blood counts, respectively were fitted to bi- or single exponential curves and dosimetry was performed for male and female patients using MIRDOSE3.1 and OLINDA/EXM. Results: Initially, WB, lung and kidney activity was similar but retention was significantly higher for NOCATE compared with OCTREO. Liver and spleen uptake of NOCATE was higher from beginning (p<0.001) and remained so over time. Activity in rest of body showed similar α and β half-lives, but the β half-life fraction of NOCATE was much higher than OCTREO (49% vs. 19%, respectively). Blood T1/2β was longer for NOCATE compared with OCTREO (19 vs. 6h). Residence times were similar in male and female patients while they were in both genders higher for NOCATE than OCTREO. Consequently, effective dose (ED) for NOCATE (ED 114 and 134 μSv/MBq for man and women, respectively) exceeded that of OCTREO (ED = 61 and 71 μSv/MBq), the latter results being close to the ICRP-published radiation dose of OCTREO (ED = 54 and 71 µSv/MBq, respectively). Differential activity measurement in blood cells and plasma showed that only a minor fraction of NOCATE and OCTREO (<5 % in the mean) was bound to globular blood components. Conclusions: NOCATE showed higher retention in normal organs and delivered roughly twice the radiation dose of OCTREO. The ED of OCTREO in these patients was similar to ICRP80 report when adopting a bladder voiding interval of 2 hours.

PURPOSE: The biokinetics and dosimetry of (111)In-DOTA-NOC-ATE (NOCATE), a high-affinity ligand of SSTR-2 and SSTR-5, and (111)In-DTPA-octreotide (Octreoscan?, OCTREO) were compared in the same patients. METHODS: Seventeen patients (10 men, 7 women; mean age 60 years), referred for an OCTREO scan for imaging of a neuroendocrine tumour (15), thymoma (1) or medullary thyroid carcinoma (1), agreed to undergo a second study with NOCATE. Whole-body anterior-posterior scans were recorded 0.5 (100 % reference scan), 4, 24 and 48 h (17 patients) and 120 h (5 patients) after injection. In 16 patients the OCTREO scan (178 ± 15 MBq) was performed 16 ± 5 days before the NOCATE scan (108 ± 14 MBq) with identical timing; 1 patient had the NOCATE scan before the OCTREO scan. Blood samples were obtained from 14 patients 5 min to 48 h after injection. Activities expressed as percent of the initial (reference) activity in the whole body, lung, kidney, liver, spleen and blood were fitted to biexponential or single exponential functions. Dosimetry was performed using OLINDA/EXM. RESULTS: Initial whole-body, lung and kidney activities were similar, but retention of NOCATE was higher than that of OCTREO. Liver and spleen uptakes of NOCATE were higher from the start (p < 0.001) and remained so over time. Whole-body activity showed similar α and β half-lives, but the β fraction of NOCATE was double that of OCTREO. Blood T (1/2)β for NOCATE was longer (19 vs. 6 h). As a result, the effective dose of NOCATE (105 μSv/MBq) exceeded that of OCTREO (52 μSv/MBq), and the latter result was similar to the ICRP 106 value of 54 μSv/MBq. Differential activity measurement in blood cells and plasma showed an average of <5 % of NOCATE and OCTREO attached to globular blood components. CONCLUSION: NOCATE showed a slower clearance from normal tissues and its effective dose was roughly double that of OCTREO.
