The formation and the isolation of fluoroboron salts, (D2BF2+)(PF6-), (DD'BF2+)(PF6-) and (D3BF2+)(PF6-)2, have been carried out. 1,8-Diazabicyclo [5,4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and 1,5-diazabicyclo[4,3,O]non-5-ene (DBN), extremely strong organic bases, were introduced into the fluoroboron cation systems and induced a complicated redistribution reaction in the D/BF3/BC13 systems. The result was the formation of all BFnCI4-n-, D.BFnCI3-n and fluoroboron cation species which were detected by 19p and 11B NMR spectrometry. The displacement reaction of CI- from these D.BFnCI3-n (n = 1 and 2) species by the second entering ligand is much faster than in other nitrogen donor containing systems which have been previously studied. Tetramethylguanidine, oxazolines and thiazolines can also produce similar reactions in D/BF3/BCI3 systems, but no significant BFnC4-n- species were observed. As well as influences of their basicity and their steric hindrance, N=C-R(X) (X = N, 0 or S) and N=C( X)2 (X = N or S) structures of ligands have significant effects on the fonnationof fluoroboron cations and the related NMR parameters. D3BF2+ and some D2BF2+ show the expected inertness, but (DBU)2BF2+ shows an interestingly high reactivity. (D2BF2+)(X-) formed from weak organic bases such as pyridine can react with stronger organic bases and form DD'BF2+ and D'2BF2+ in acetone or nitromethane. Fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry is doubly meaningful to this work. Firstly, FABMS can be directly applied to the complicated fluoroboron cation containing solution systems as an excellent complementary technique to multinuclear NMR. Secondly, the gas-phase ion substitution reaction of (D2BF2+)(PF6-) with the strong organic bases is successfully observed in a FABMS ion source when the B-N bond is not too strong in these cations.

We have synthesized phenylene-vinylene (PV) polymers containing segments with different conjugation lengths interspaced by random distributed aliphatic segments. Infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the prepared copolymers` structures. Polymers molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effect of polymer structure and composition on emission properties was studied by fluorescence (PL) spectroscopy under different irradiation wavelength. The emission energy shift due to segments with longer conjugation lengths was minor owed to the low polymerization degree achieved.

The hydrolysis of pyridoxalrhodanine in a basic medium containing the dimethylthallium(III) cation afforded the compound [TlMe2(L)]center dot H2O (1.H2O) [HL = 5-(hydroxymethyl)-8-methyl-3-thiol-7-azacoumarin]. This compound was characterized in solid state by IR spectroscopy and in solution by H-1 and C-13{H-1} NMR spectrometry. X-ray diffraction showed that the crystal consists of associated TlMe2(L) units and hydrogen bonded water molecules. The L- anion is bound to the metal mainly by a bridging S atom [Tl-S = 2.9458(18) angstrom; 2.9616(16) angstrom], although secondary interactions through O atoms (Tl-O: 2.861(5); 2.900(5) angstrom)] are also present. The longer Tl-O interaction and the hydrogen bonds of the water molecules give rise to a tridimensional polymeric structure. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cyclic tetrapeptides are an intriguing class of natural products. To synthesize highly strained cyclic tetrapeptides; we developed a macrocyclization strategy that involves the inclusion of 2-hydroxy-6-nitrobenzyl (HnB) group at the N-terminus and in the middle of the sequence. The N-terminal auxiliary performs a ring closure/ring contraction role, and the backbone auxiliary promotes cis amide bonds to facilitate the otherwise difficult ring contraction. Following this route, the all-L cyclic tetrapeptide cyclo-[Tyr-Arg-Phe-Ala] was successfully prepared.

A nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) method for the determination of beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (L-BMAA) in environmental aqueous samples was developed and validated. L-BMAA is a neurotoxic modified amino acid that can be produced by cyanobacteria in aqueous environments. This toxin was extracted from samples by means of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and identified and quantified by (1)H NMR without further derivatization steps. The lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 5 mu g/mL Good inter and intra-assay precision was also observed (relative standard deviation <8.5%) with the use of 4-nitro-DL-phenylalanine as an internal standard (IS). This method of 1H NMR analysis is not time consuming and can be readily utilized to monitor L-BMAA and confirm its presence in environmental and biological samples. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. A new and promising nitrosyl ruthenium complex, [Ru(NO)(bdqi-COOH)(terpy)](PF(6))(3), bdqi-COOH is 3,4-diiminebenzoic acid and terpy is 2,2`-terpyridine, has been synthesized as a NO donor agent. The procedure used for [Ru(NO)(bdqi-COOH)(terpy)](PF(6))(3) synthesis has, apparently, yielded the formation of two isomers in which the ligand bdqi-COOH appears to be coordinated in its reduced form (bdcat-COOH), which could have differences in their pharmacological properties. Therefore, it was intended to separate the two possible isomers by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and to characterize them by high resolution mass spectrometry (QTOF MS) and by magnetic nuclear resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The results obtained by MS showed that the ESI-MS mass spectra of both HPLC column fractions, e.g. peak 1 and peak 2, are essentially equal, showing that both isomers display nearly identical gas-phase behavior with clusters of isotopologue ions centered at m/z 573, m/z 543 and m/z 513. Regarding the NMR analysis, the results showed that the positional isomerism is located in the bdqi-COOH ligand. From the observed results it can be concluded that the synthesis procedure that has been used results in the formation of two [Ru(terpy)(bdqi-COOH)NO](PF(6))(3) isomers. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Hedamycin, a member of the pluramycin class of antitumour antibiotics, consists of a planar anthrapyrantrione chromophore to which is attached two aminosugar rings at one end and a bisepoxide-containing sidechain at the other end, Binding to double-stranded DNA is known to involve both reversible and non-reversible modes of interaction. As a part of studies directed towards elucidating the structural basis for the observed 5'-pyGT-3' sequence selectivity of hedamycin, we conducted one-dimensional NMR titration experiments at low temperature using the hexadeoxyribonucleotide duplexes d(CACGTG)(2) and d(CGTACG)(2). Spectral changes which occurred during these titrations are consistent with hedamycin initially forming a reversible complex in slow exchange on the NMR timescale and binding through intercalation of the chromophore. Monitoring of this reversible complex over a period of hours revealed a second type of spectral change which corresponds with formation of a non-reversible complex. Continuous NMR T-2 relaxation measurements were carried out on seven rabbit longissimus muscle samples in the period from 25 min to 28 h post-mortem at 200 MHz for H-1. To display differences in post-mortern pH progress and extent of changes in water characteristics during conversion of muscle to meat, three of the seven animals were pre-slaughter injected with adrenaline (0.5 mg/kg live weight 4 h before sacrifice) to differentiate muscle glycogen stores at the time of slaughter. Distributed analysis of T-2 data displayed clear differences in the characteristics of the various transverse relaxation components dependent on progress in pH, as did the water-holding capacity of samples 24 h postmortem. This reveals a pronounced effect of the progressive change in pH on the subsequent development in physical/chemical states of water during the conversion of muscle to meat. Finally, the relaxation characteristics are discussed in relation to supposed post-mortem processes of protein denaturation.

The novel asymmetric metallo-organic triads cis- and trans-[B(4-py)BPFPH(2){Ru(3)O(Ac)(6)(py)(2)}(Ru(bpy)(2)Cl}](PF(6))(2) (5a,b) for which cis- and trans-B(4-py)BPFPH(2)=5,10-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-15,20-bis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin and 5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-10,20-bis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, respectively; Ac = acetate; py = pyridine and bpy = 2,2`-bipyridine, as well as their corresponding monosubstituted dyads cis- and trans-[B(4-py)BPFPH(2){Ru(3)O(Ac)(6)(py)(2)}]PF(6) (4a,b) have been structurally characterized via electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS). The ESI-MS of dyads 4a,b display two characteristic Ru-multicomponent clusters of isotopologue ions corresponding to singly charged ions 4a,b(+) of m/z 1629 and doubly charged ions [4a,b+H](2+) of m/z 815 and the triads 5a,b are detected by ESI-MS as the intact doubly charged cluster of isotopologue ions of m/z 1039 [5a,b](2+). The ESI-MS/MS of 4a,b(+), [4a,b+H](2+) and [5a,b](2+) reveal characteristic dissociation pathways, which confirm the structural assignments providing additional information on the intrinsic binding strengths of the gaseous ions. Although the gas-phase behavior of each pair of isomers was rather similar, the less symmetric dyads 4a,b are distinguished via the (1)H NMR spectral profile of the pyrrolic signals. Exploratory photophysical assays have shown that both modifying motifs alter the porphyrinic core emission profile, opening the possibility to use these asymmetric systems as photophysical devices. Two minor saponins obtained from the methanolic extract of the leaves of Ilex paraguariensis have been characterised by 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, API-MS and chemical hydrolysis as oleanolic acid-3-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl)-(28-->1)- beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (guaiacin B) and oleanolic acid-3-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-(alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl- (1-->2))-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl)-(28-->1)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (nudicaucin C). Both are isomeric forms of the known matesaponins 1 (MSP 1) and 2 (MSP 2) and differ only by the nature of the aglycone: they have oleanolic acid instead of ursolic acid, as found in the matesaponins. These minor saponins have not been fully separated from their major isomers MSP 1 and 2 and were characterised by in-mixture NMR analysis, LC-MS and LC-MSn experiments.
