The thermal denaturation and aggregation of the HbGp, in the oxy- and cyanomet-forms, was investigated by DSC, AUC, DLS, optical absorption and CD, in the pH range from 5.0 to 7.0. Oxy-HbGp has a denaturation process partially reversible and dependent on the temperature. DSC melting curve is characterized by a single peak with Tc value of 333.4±0.2K for oxy-HbGp, while two peaks with Tc values of 332.2±0.1 and 338.4±0.2K are observed for cyanomet-HbGp, at pH 7.0. In acidic pH oxy- and cyanomet-HbGp are more stable showing higher Tc values and aggregation. AUC data show that, HbGp, at pH 7.0, upon denaturation, remains undissociated at 323K, presenting oligomeric dissociation at 333 (12±3% of tetramer and 88±5% of whole HbGp) and 343K (70±5% of monomer and 30±2% of trimer). DLS data show that the lag period before aggregation is dependent on the temperature and HbGp concentration. Optical absorption and CD results show that the increase of temperature leads to the oxy-HbGp oxidation and aggregation, above 331K, in acidic pH. CD data, for HbGp, present a greater thermal stability in acid medium than at neutral pH, with similar Tc values for both oxidation forms. Our data are consistent with previous studies and represents an advance in understanding the thermal stability of oligomeric HbGp structure. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The electroreduction of nitrate on Pt(1 0 0) electrodes in phosphate buffer neutral solution, pH 7.2, is reported. The sensitivity of the reaction to the crystallographic order of the surface is studied through the controlled introduction of defects by using stepped surfaces with (1 0 0) terraces of different length separated by monoatomic steps, either with (1 1 1) or (1 1 0) symmetry. The results of this study show that nitrate reduction occurs mainly on the well defined (1 0 0) terraces in the potential region where H adsorption starts to decrease, allowing the nitrate anion to access the surface. Adsorbed NO has been detected as a stable intermediate in this media. An oxidation process observed at 0.8 V has been identified as leading to the formation of adsorbed NO and being responsible for a secondary reduction process observed in the subsequent negative scan. Using in situ FTIRS, ammonium was found to be the main product of nitrate reduction. This species can be oxidized at high potentials resulting in adsorbed NO and nitrate (probably with nitrite as intermediate).

Teollisessa kromatografiassa kolonnia pyritään kuormittamaan mahdollisimman paljon, jotta saataisiin maksimoitua erotetun komponentin määrä aikayksikköä kohden. Tässä työssä kuormitusta tutkittiin nostamalla syöttöliuoksen, synteettisen melassin, näyteväkevyyttä 80-125 ºC:ssa. Eluenttina oli paineistettu kuumaa vesi ja hartsina vahva Na-muotoinen PS-DVB pohjainen vahva kationinvaihtohartsi. Lämpötilaa nostamalla piikit kapenivat ja tulivat symmetrisemmiksi, erotus nopeutui sekä suola erottui usein paremmin sokereista. Syöttöliuoksen kuiva-ainetta lisättiin asteittain 55 p-% saakka, jolloin ei vielä havaittu ongelmia erotuksessa. Lämpötilassa 125 ºC havaittiin erotuksen aikana kuormituksesta riippumatonta sakkaroosin invertoitumista. Vertailtaessa eri stationäärifaaseja havaittiin Na-muotoisen PS-DVB pohjaisen kationinvaihtohartsin erottavan yleensä sokereita, sokerialkoholeja, oligosakkarideja ja betaiinia lähes poikkeuksetta paremmin alhaisilla pitoisuuksilla kuin neutraalihartsi ja Na-muotoinen zeoliitti. Erottuminen ei yleensä parantunut lämpötilaa nostamalla, mutta piikit kapenivat ja erotus nopeutui. Monosakkaridien erotus huononi 125 ºC:ssa kationinvaihtohartsilla. Tutkittaessa terveysvaikutteisten ksylo-oligosakkaridien soveltuvuutta alikriittiseen erotukseen, niiden havaittiin huomattavasti hydrolysoituvan happamissa olosuhteissa koeputkessa 100 ºC:ssa kahdessa tunnissa. Näytteessä olevien epäpuhtauksien havaittiin katalysoineen hydrolyysiä. Hydrolysoituminen oli hitaampaa neutraaleissa olosuhteissa korotetussa lämpötilassa. Tästä voitiin tehdä johtopäätös, että alikriittiset olosuhteet eivät sovi ksylo-oligosakkaridien erotukseen.

This paper describes a sequential injection analysis (SIA) set-up coupled to a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) to accomplish the determination of low concentrations of copper in drinking waters. Copper is first retained under neutral media in an on-line 29x1.6 mm column filled with poly(ethylenimine) immobilised on silica gel. The retained analyte is then eluted by flowing through the column 250 mL of a nitric acid solution. The selection of 3.85 ml of sample enabled to obtain a detection limit of 0.27 mug/L and a sampling rate of about 24 samples/h. There was a good agrement between the results of 12 samples furnished by the proposed procedure and by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. Repeatability assessment gave a relative standard deviation of 1.3 % after ten replicate analysis of a sample containing about 70 mug/L in copper..

A new titrimetric method for the determination of phosphite in fertilizer samples, based on reaction of H3PO3 with standard iodine solution in neutral media, is proposed. Diluted samples containing ca. 0.4% m/v P2O5 are heated and titrated with 0.05 mol L-1 iodine standard until the solution becomes faint yellow. Back titration is also feasible: a slight excess of titrant is added followed by starch indicator and titration is completed taking as the end point the change in color from blue to colorless. The influence of chemical composition and pH of buffers, temperature and foreign species on waiting time and end-point detection were investigated. For the Na2HPO4/NaH2PO4 buffer (pH 6.8) at 70 °C, the titration time was 10 min, corresponding to about 127 mg iodine, 200 mg KI and 174 mg Na2HPO4 and 176 mg NaH2PO4 consumed per determination. Accuracy was checked for phosphite determination in seven fertilizer samples. Results obtained by the proposed procedure were in agreement with those obtained by spectrophotometry at 95% confidence level. The R.S.D. (n=10) for direct and back titration was 0.4% and 1.3% respectively.

Afin d'étudier la diffusion et la libération de molécules de tailles inférieures dans un gel polymère, les coefficients d'auto-diffusion d'une série de polymères en étoile avec un noyau d'acide cholique et quatre branches de poly(éthylène glycol) (PEG) ont été déterminés par spectroscopie RMN à gradient de champ pulsé dans des solutions aqueuses et des gels de poly(alcool vinylique). Les coefficients de diffusion obtenus ont été comparés avec ceux des PEGs linéaires et dendritiques pour étudier l'effet de l'architecture des polymères. Les polymères en étoile amphiphiles ont des profils de diffusion en fonction de la concentration similaires à leurs homologues linéaires dans le régime dilué. Ils diffusent plus lentement dans le régime semi-dilué en raison de leur noyau hydrophobe. Leurs conformations en solution ont été étudiées par des mesures de temps de relaxation spin-réseau T1 du noyau et des branches. L'imagerie RMN a été utilisée pour étudier le gonflement des comprimés polymères et la diffusion dans la matrice polymère. Les comprimés étaient constitués d'amidon à haute teneur en amylose et chargés avec de l'acétaminophène (de 10 à 40% en poids). Le gonflement des comprimés, ainsi que l'absorption et la diffusion de l'eau, augmentent avec la teneur en médicament, tandis que le pourcentage de libération du médicament est similaire pour tous les comprimés. Le gonflement in vitro des comprimés d'un complexe polyélectrolyte à base d'amidon carboxyméthylé et de chitosane a également été étudié par imagerie RMN. Ces comprimés sont sensibles au pH : ils gonflent beaucoup plus dans les milieux acides que dans les milieux neutres en raison de la dissociation des deux composants et de la protonation des chaînes du chitosane. La comparaison des résultats avec ceux d'amidon à haute teneur en amylose indique que les deux matrices ont des gonflements et des profils de libération du médicament semblables dans les milieux neutres, alors que les comprimés complexes gonflent plus dans les milieux acides en raison de la dissociation du chitosane et de l'amidon.

Une sonde électrostatique de Langmuir cylindrique a été utilisée pour caractériser une post-décharge d’un plasma d’ondes de surface de N2-O2 par la mesure de la densité des ions et électrons ainsi que la température des électrons dérivée de la fonction de distribution en énergie des électrons (EEDF). Une densité maximale des électrons au centre de la early afterglow de l’ordre de 1013 m-3 a été déterminée, alors que celle-ci a chuté à 1011 m-3 au début de la late afterglow. Tout au long du profil de la post-décharge, une densité des ions supérieure à celle des électrons indique la présence d’un milieu non macroscopiquement neutre. La post-décharge est caractérisée par une EEDF quasi maxwellienne avec une température des électrons de 0.5±0.1 eV, alors qu’elle grimpe à 1.1 ±0.2 eV dans la early afterglow due à la contribution des collisions vibrationnelles-électroniques (V-E) particulièrement importantes. L’ajout d’O2 dans la décharge principale entraîne un rehaussement des espèces chargées et de la température des électrons suivi d’une chute avec l’augmentation de la concentration d’O2. Le changement de la composition électrique de la post-décharge par la création de NO+ au détriment des ions N2+ est à l’origine du phénomène. Le recours à cette post-décharge de N2 pour la modification des propriétés d’émission optique de nanofils purs de GaN et avec des inclusions d’InGaN a été étudié par photoluminescence (PL). Bien que l’émission provenant des nanofils de GaN et de la matrice de GaN recouvrant les inclusions diminue suite à la création de sites de recombinaison non radiatifs, celle provenant des inclusions d’InGaN augmente fortement. Des mesures de PL par excitation indiquent que cet effet n’est pas attribuable à un changement de l’absorption de la surface de GaN. Ceci suggère un recuit dynamique induit par la désexcitation des métastables de N2 suite à leur collision à la surface des nanofils et la possibilité de passiver les défauts de surface tels que des lacunes d’azote par l’action d’atomes de N2 réactifs provenant de la post-décharge. L’incorporation d’O2 induit les mêmes effets en plus d’un décalage vers le rouge de la bande d’émission des inclusions, suggérant l’action des espèces d’O2 au sein même des nanostructures.

Urea-formaldehyde resins find numerous applications in adhesive, textile finishing and moulded plastic industries. Kinetic investigations of the reactions of urea and its related compounds with formaldehyde in aqueous acid, alkaline and neutral media have been carried out. A thin—layer chromatographic method was developed for the separation and estimation of the products of these reactions. Using this technique the various initial steps in the reactions were analysed and the rate constants have been determined.

The present study describes the stability and rheological behavior of suspensions of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan (PNIPAMCS), and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan-poly (acrylic acid) (PNIPAM-CS-PAA) crosslinked particles sensitive to pH and temperature. These dual-sensitive materials were simply obtained by one-pot method, via free-radical precipitation copolymerization with potassium persulfate, using N,N -methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent. Incorporation of the precursor materials into the chemical networks was confirmed by elementary analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The influence of external stimuli such as pH and temperature, or both, on particle behavior was investigated through rheological measurements, visual stability tests and analytical centrifugation. The PNIPAM-CS particles showed higher stability in acid and neutral media, whereas PNIPAM-CS-PAA particles were more stable in neutral and alkaline media, both below and above the LCST of poly (Nisopropylacrylamide) (stability data). This is due to different interparticle interactions, as well as those between the particles and the medium (also evidenced by rheological data), which were also influenced by the pH and temperature of the medium. Based on the results obtained, we found that the introduction of pH-sensitive polymers to crosslinked poly (Nisopropylacrylamide) particles not only produced dual-sensitive materials, but allowed particle stability to be adjusted, making phase separation faster or slower, depending on the desired application. The DNA analogue tricyclo-DNA, built from conformationally rigid nucleoside analogues that were linked via tertiary phosphodiester functions, can efficiently be synthesized from the corresponding phosphoramidites by conventional solid-phase cyanoethyl phosphoramidite chemistry. 5'-End phosphorylated tricyclo-DNA sequences are chemically stable in aqueous, pH-neutral media at temperatures from 0 to 90 C. Tricyclo-DNA sequences resist enzymatic hydrolysis by the 3'-exonuclease snake venom phosphodiesterase. Homobasic adenine- and thymine-containing tricyclo-DNA octa- and nonamers are extraordinarily stable A-T base-pairing systems, not only in their own series but also with complementary DNA and RNA. Base mismatch formation is strongly destabilized. As in bicyclo-DNA, the tricyclo-DNA purine sequences preferentially accept a complementary strand on the Hoogsteen face of the base. A thermodynamic analysis reveals entropic benefits in the case of hetero-backbone duplex formation (tricyclo-DNA/DNA duplexes) and both an enthalpic and entropic benefit for duplex formation in the pure tricyclo-DNA series compared to natural DNA. Stability of tricyclo-DNA duplex formation depends more strongly on monovalent salt concentration compared to natural DNA. Homopyrimidine DNA sequences containing tricyclothymidine residues form triplexes with complementary double-stranded DNA. Triple-helix stability depends on the sequence composition and can be higher when compared to that of natural DNA. The use of one tricyclothymidine residue in the center of the self-complementary dodecamer duplex (d(CGCGAAT t CGCG), t = tricyclothymidine) strongly stabilizes its monomolecular hairpin loop structure relative to that of the corresponding pure DNA dodecamer ( T m = +20 C), indicating (tetra)loop-stabilizing properties of this rigid nucleoside analogue.

The ability of SnCl2.2H2O as catalyst to promote the Biginelli three-component condensation reaction from a diversity of aromatic aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate and urea or thiourea is described. The reaction was carried out in acetonitrile or ethanol as solvents in neutral media and represents an improvement of the classical Biginelli protocol and an advantage in comparison with FeCl3.6H2O, NiCl2.6H2O and CoCl2.6H2O which were used with HCl as co-catalyst. The synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones was achieved in good to excelent yields.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are modern methods using reactive hydroxyl radicals for the mineralization of organic pollutants into simple inorganic compounds, such as CO2 and H2O. Among AOPs electrochemical oxidation (EO) is a method suitable for coloured and turbid wastewaters. The degradation of pollutants occurs on electrocatalytic electrodes. The majority of electrodes contain in their structure either expensive materials (diamond and Pt-group metals) or are toxic for the environment compounds (Sb or Pb). One of the main disadvantages of electrochemical method is the polarization and contamination of electrodes due to the deposition of reaction products on their surface, which results in diminishing of the process efficiency. Ultrasound combined with the electrochemical degradation process eliminates electrode contamination because of the continuous mechanical cleaning effect produced by the formation and collapse of acoustic cavitation bubbles near to the electrode surface. Moreover, high frequency ultrasound generates hydroxyl radicals at water sonolysis. Ultrasound-assisted EO is a non-selective method for oxidation of different organic compounds with high degradation efficiencies. The aim of this research was to develop novel sustainable and cost-effective electrodes working as electrocatalysts and test their activity in electrocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds such as dyes and organic acids. Moreover, the goal of the research was to enhance the efficiency of electrocatalytic degradation processes by assisting it with ultrasound in order to eliminate the main drawbacks of a single electrochemical oxidation such as electrodes polarization and passivation. Novel Ti/Ta2O5-SnO2 electrodes were developed and found to be electrocatalytically active towards water (with 5% Ta content, 10 oxide film layers) and organic compounds oxidation (with 7.5% Ta content, 8 oxide film layers) and therefore these electrodes can be applicable in both environmental and energy fields. The synergetic effect of combined electrolysis and sonication was shown while conducting sonoelectrochemical (EO/US) degradation of methylene blue (MB) and formic acid (FA). Complete degradation of MB and FA was achieved after 45 and 120 min of EO/US process respectively in neutral media. Mineralization efficiency of FA over 95% was obtained after 2 h of degradation using high frequency ultrasound (381, 863, 1176 kHz) combined with 9.1 mA/cm2 current density. EO/US degradation of MB provided over 75% mineralization in 8 h. High degradation kinetic rates and mineralization efficiencies of model pollutants obtained in EO/US experiments provide the preconditions for further extrapolation of this treatment method to pilot scale studies with industrial wastewaters.

Tutkimuksen tavoite on selvittää digitaalisen sisällön ominaisuuksia, jotka vaikuttavat ryhtyvätkö kuluttajat jakamaan, tykkäämään ja kommentoimaan sitä sosiaalisessa mediassa. Tällä pyritään auttamaan yrityksiä ymmärtämään paremmin viraalisuutta, jotta he pystyisivät tuottamaan ja julkaisemaan nettisivuillaan ja sosiaalisessa mediassa parempaa sisältöä, jota kuluttajat jakaisivat enemmän. Tutkimus toteutetaan muodostamalla hypoteeseja mahdollisista ominaisuuksista kirjallisuuden perusteella ja testaamalla niitä regressioanalyyseillä empiirisessä osiossa. Tulokset paljastavat yhdeksän piirrettä, jotka lisäävät viraalisuutta: kiinnostavuus, neutraalisuus, yllättävyys, viihdyttävyys, epäkäytännöllisyys, artikkelin ja Facebook julkaisun pituus, eri sisältö taktiikoiden käyttö (erityisesti blogit ja kuvat lisäävät viraalisuutta) sekä kun mielipidevaikuttaja tai kuuluisuus jakaa sisällön.
