This work encompasses the direct electrodeposition of polypyrrole nanowires onto Au substrates using different electrochemical techniques: normal pulse voltammetry (NPV) and constant potential method with the aim in applying these films for the first time in ammonia sensing in solution. The performance of these nanowire-based sensors are compared and evaluated in terms of: film morphology (analyzed with scanning electron microscopy); their sensitivity towards ammonia; electrochemical and contact angle measurements. For nanowires prepared by NPV, the sensitivity towards ammonia increases with increasing amount of electrodeposited polypyrrole, as expected due to the role of polypyrrole as electrochemical transducer for ammonia oxidation. On the other hand, nanowires prepared potentiostatically displayed an unexpected opposite behavior, attributed to the lower conductivity of longer polypyrrole nanowires obtained through this technique. These results evidenced that the analytical and physico-chemical features of nanostructured sensors can differ greatly from those of their conventional bulky analogous. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Composite materials made of porous SiO2 matrices filled with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were deposited on electrodes by an electroassisted deposition method. The synthesized materials were characterized by several techniques, showing that porous silica prevents the aggregation of SWCNT on the electrodes, as could be observed by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Different redox probes were employed to test their electrochemical sensing properties. The silica layer allows the permeation of the redox probes to the electrode surface and improves the electrochemical reversibility indicating an electrocatalytic effect by the incorporation of dispersed SWCNT into the silica films.

Pt/nanostructured molybdenum oxide (MoO3) /SiC Schottky diode based gas sensors were fabricated for hydrogen (H2) gas sensing. Due to the enhanced performance, which is ascribed to the application of MoO3 nanostructures, these devices were used in reversed bias. MoO3 characterization by scanning electron microscopy showed morphology of randomly orientated nanoplatelets with thicknesses between 50 and 500 nm. An α-Β mixed phase crystallographic structure of MoO3 was characterized by x-ray diffraction. At 180 °C, 1.343 V voltage shift in the reverse I-V curve and a Pt/ MoO3 barrier height change of 20 meV were obtained after exposure to 1% H2 gas in synthetic air. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

Nanostructured WO3 thin films have been prepared by thermal evaporation to detect hydrogen at low temperatures. The influence of heat treatment on the physical, chemical and electronic properties of these films has been investigated. The films were annealed at 400oC for 2 hours in air. AFM and TEM analysis revealed that the as-deposited WO3 film is high amorphous and made up of cluster of particles. Annealing at 400oC for 2 hours in air resulted in very fine grain size of the order of 5 nm and porous structure. GIXRD and Raman analysis revealed that annealing improved the crystallinity of WO3 film. Gas sensors based on annealed WO3 films have shown a high response towards various concentrations (10-10000 ppm) H2 at an operating temperature of 150oC. The improved sensing performance at low operating temperature is due to the optimum physical, chemical and electronic properties achieved in the WO3 film through annealing.

In this paper, we report the development of novel Pt/nanostructured RuO2/SiC Schottky diode based sensors for hydrogen gas applications. The nanostructured ruthenium oxide thin films were deposited on SiC substrates using radio frequency sputtering technique. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the sputtered RuO2 layer consists of nano-cubular structures with dimensions ranging between 10 and 50 nm. X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of tetragonal ruthenium (IV) oxide, with preferred orientation along the (101) lattice plane. The current-voltage characteristics of the sensors were investigated towards hydrogen gas in synthetic air at different temperatures from 25 °C to 240 °C. The dynamic responses of the sensors were studied at an optimum temperature of 240 °C and a voltage shift of 304 mV was recorded toward 1% hydrogen gas.

In this paper, a comparative study of Pt/nanostructured MoO3/SiC Schottky diode based hydrogen gas sensors is presented. MoO3 nanostructured films with three different morphologies (nanoplatelets, nanoplateletsnanowires and nano-flowers) were deposited on SiC by thermal evaporation. We compare the current-voltage characteristics and the dynamic response of these sensors as they are exposed to hydrogen gas at temperatures up to 250°C. Results indicate that the sensor based on MoO3 nanoflowers exhibited the highest sensitivity (in terms of a 5.79V voltage shift) towards 1% hydrogen; while the sensor based on MoO3 nanoplatelets showed the quickest response (t90%- 40s).

Pt/nanostructured ZnO/SiC Schottky contact devices were fabricated and characterized for hydrogen gas sensing. These devices were investigated in reverse bias due to greater sensitivity, which attributes to the application of nanostructured ZnO. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of these devices were measured in different hydrogen concentrations. Effective change in the barrier height for 1% hydrogen was calculated as 27.06 meV at 620°C. The dynamic response of the sensors was also investigated and a voltage shift of 325 mV was recorded at 620°C during exposure to 1% hydrogen in synthetic air.

This thesis work covered the fabrication and characterisation of impedance sensors for biological applications aiming in particular to the cytotoxicity monitoring of cultured cells exposed to different kind of chemical compounds and drugs and to the identification of different types of biological tissue (fat, muscles, nerves) using a sensor fabricated on the tip of a commercially available needle during peripheral nerve block procedures. Gold impedance electrodes have been successfully fabricated for impedance measurement on cells cultured on the electrode surface which was modified with the fabrication of gold nanopillars. These nanostructures have a height of 60nm or 100nm and they have highly ordered layout as they are fabricated through the e-beam technique. The fabrication of the threedimensional structures on the interdigitated electrodes was supposed to improve the sensitivity of the ECIS (electric cell-substrate impedance sensing) measurement while monitoring the cytotoxicity effects of two different drugs (Antrodia Camphorata extract and Nicotine) on three different cell lines (HeLa, A549 and BALBc 3T3) cultured on the impedance devices and change the morphology of the cells growing on the nanostructured electrodes. The fabrication of the nanostructures was achieved combining techniques like UV lithography, metal lift-off, evaporation and e-beam lithography techniques. The electrodes were packaged using a pressure sensitive, medical grade adhesive double-sided tape. The electrodes were then characterised with the aid of AFM and SEM imaging which confirmed the success of the fabrication processes showing the nanopillars fabricated with the right layout and dimensions figures. The introduction of nanopillars on the impedance electrodes, however, did not improve much the sensitivity of the assay with the exception of tests carried out with Nicotine. HeLa and A549 cells appeared to grow in a different way on the two surfaces, while no differences where noticed on the BALBc 3T3 cells. Impedance measurements obtained with the dead cells on the negative control electrodes or the test electrodes with the drugs can be compared to those done on the electrodes containing just media in the tested volume (as no cells are attached and cover the electrode surface). The impedance figures recorded using these electrodes were between 1.5kΩ and 2.5 kΩ, while the figures recorded on confluent cell layers range between 4kΩ and 5.5kΩ with peaks of almost 7 kΩ if there was more than one layer of cells growing on each other. There was then a very clear separation between the values of living cell compared to the dead ones which was almost 2.5 - 3kΩ. In this way it was very easy to determine whether the drugs affected the cells normal life cycle on not. However, little or no differences were noticed in the impedance analysis carried out on the two different kinds of electrodes using cultured cells. An increase of sensitivity was noticed only in a couple of experiments carried out on A549 cells growing on the nanostructured electrodes and exposed to different concentration of a solution containing Nicotine. More experiments to achieve a higher number of statistical evidences will be needed to prove these findings with an absolute confidence. The smart needle project aimed to reduce the limitations of the Electrical Nerve Stimulation (ENS) and the Ultra Sound Guided peripheral nerve block techniques giving the clinicians an additional tool for performing correctly the peripheral nerve block. Bioimpedance, as measured at the needle tip, provides additional information on needle tip location, thereby facilitating detection of intraneural needle placement. Using the needle as a precision instrument and guidance tool may provide additional information as to needle tip location and enhance safety in regional anaesthesia. In the time analysis, with the frequency fixed at 10kHz and the samples kept at 12°C, the approximate range for muscle bioimpedance was 203 – 616 Ω, the approximate bioimpedance range for fat was 5.02 - 17.8 kΩ and the approximate range for connective tissue was 790 Ω – 1.55 kΩ. While when the samples were heated at 37°C and measured again at 10kHz, the approximate bioimpedance range for muscle was 100-175Ω. The approximate bioimpedance range of fat was 627 Ω - 3.2 kΩ and the range for connective tissue was 221-540Ω. In the experiments done on the fresh slaughtered lamb carcass, replicating a scenario close to the real application, the impedance values recorded for fat were around 17 kΩ, for muscle and lean tissue around 1.3 kΩ while the nervous structures had an impedance value of 2.9 kΩ. With the data collected during this research, it was possible to conclude that measurements of bioimpedance at the needle tip location can give valuable information to the clinicians performing a peripheral nerve block procedure as the separation (in terms of impedance figures) was very marked between the different type of tissues. It is then feasible to use an impedance electrode fabricated on the needle tip to differentiate several tissues from the nerve tissue. Currently, several different methods are being studied to fabricate an impedance electrode on the surface of a commercially available needle used for the peripheral nerve block procedure.

The assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into nanostructured films is attractive for producing functionalized hybrid materials and (bio-)chemical sensors, but this requires experimental methods that allow for control of molecular architecturcs. In this study, we exploit the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique to obtain two types of sensors incorporating CNTs. In the first, LbL films of alternating layers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) dispersed in polyarninoamide (PAMAM) dendrimers and nickel phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) were used in amperometric detection of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA). The electrochemical properties evaluated with cyclic voltammetry indicated that the incorporation of MWNTs in the PAMAM-NT/NiTsPc LbL films led to a 3-fold increase in the peak current, in addition to a decrease of 50 mV in the oxidation potential of DA. The latter allowed detection of DA even in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), a typical interferent for DA. Another LbL film was obtained with layers of PAMAM and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) employed in field-effect-devices using a capacitive electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor structure (EIS). The adsorption of the film components was monitored by measuring the flat-band voltage shift in capacitance-voltage (C-P) curves, caused by the charges from the components. Constant capacitance (ConCap) measurements showed that the EISPAMAM/SWNT film displayed a high pH sensitivity (ca. 54.5 mV/pH), being capable of detecting penicillin G between 10(-4) mol L(-1) and 10(-2) mol L-1, when a layer of penicillinase was adsorbed atop the PAMAM/SWNT film. We describe the assembly of layer-by-layer films based on the poly(propylene imine) dendrimer (PPID) generation 3 and nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) for application as chemically sensitive membranes in sepal alive extended-gate field effect transistor (SEGFET) pH sensors PPID/NiTsPc films wet e adsorbed on quartz, glass. indium tin oxide. or gold (Au)-covered glass substrates Multilayer formation was monitored via UV-vis absorption upon following the increment in the Q-band intensity (615 nm) of NiTsPc The nanostructured membranes were very stable in a pH range of 4-10 and displayed a good sensitivity toward H(+), ca 30 mV/pH for PPID/N(1)TsPc films deposited on Au-covered substrates For films deposited on ITO, the sensitivity was ca 52 4 mV/pH. close to the expected theoretical value for ton-sensitive membranes. The use of chemically stable PPID/NiTsPc films as gate membranes in SEGFETs, as introduced here, may represent an alternative for the fabrication of nanostructured, porous platforms for enzyme immobilization to be used in enzymatic biosensors.

This study describes the development of amperometric sensors based on poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc(2)) films assembled using the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique. The films have been used as modified electrodes for catechol quantification. Electrochemical measurements have been employed to investigate the catalytic properties of the LuPc(2) immobilized in the LbL films. By chronoamperometry, the sensors present excellent sensitivity (20 nA mu M(-1)) in a wide linear range (R(2) = 0.994) up to 900 mu M and limit of detection (s/n = 3) of 37.5 x 10(-8) M for catechol. The sensors have good reproducibility and can be used at least for ten times. The work potential is +0.3 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE). In voltammetry measurements, the calibration curve shows a good linearity (R(2) = 0.992) in the range of catechol up to 500 mu M with a sensitivity of 90 nA mu M(-1) and LD of 8 mu M. Chemical sensors made from nanostructured films of poly(o-ethoxyaniline) POEA and poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) PSS are produced and used to detect and distinguish 4 chemicals in solution at 20 mM, including sucrose, NaCl, HCl, and caffeine. These substances are used in order to mimic the 4 basic tastes recognized by humans, namely sweet, salty, sour, and bitter, respectively. The sensors are produced by the deposition of POEA/PSS films at the top of interdigitated microelectrodes via the layer-by-layer technique, using POEA solutions containing different dopant acids. Besides the different characteristics of the POEA/PSS films investigated by UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopies, and by atomic force microscopy.. it is observed that their electrical response to the different chemicals in liquid media is very fast, in the order of seconds, systematical, reproducible, and extremely dependent on the type of acid used for film fabrication. The responses of the as-prepared sensors are reproducible and repetitive after many cycles of operation. Furthermore, the use of an "electronic tongue" composed by an array of these sensors and principal component analysis as pattern recognition tool allows one to reasonably distinguish test solutions according to their chemical composition. Tin oxide thin films doped with 7 mol% antimony oxide multilayer were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Morphological characterization revealed films with round-shaped grains, nanometric size (similar to 13 nm), and low roughness. These films display high transmittance (similar to 80%) in the visible range of transmittance spectra, which is desirable for transparent conductive oxide films. Analysis on electrical resistivity versus temperature data showed two different conduction mechanisms toward the temperature range. The gas sensor properties measurement of the thicker thin film revealed good sensibility for the NOx. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thin films of the bis[2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octachlorophthalocyaninate] lutetium(III) complex (LuPc2Cl32) have been prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett and the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) techniques. The influence of the chlorine substituents in the structure of the films and in their spectroscopic, electrochemical and sensing properties has been evaluated. The pi-A isotherms exhibit a monolayer stability greater than the observed in the unsubstituted analogue (LuPc2), being easily transferred to solid substrates, also in contrast to LuPc2. The LB and LS films present a linear growth forming stratified layers, monitored by UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. The latter also revealed the presence of LuPc2Cl32 in the form of monomers and aggregates in both films. The FTIR data showed that the LuPc2Cl32 molecules present a non-preferential arrangement in both films. Monolayers of LB and LS were deposited onto 6 nm Ag island films to record surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS), leading to enhancement factors close to 2 x 10(3). Finally, LB and LS films deposited onto ITO glass have been successfully used as voltammetric sensors for the detection of catechol. The improved electroactivity of the LB and LS films has been confirmed by the reduction of the overpotential of the oxidation of catechol. The enhancement of the electrocatalytic effect observed in LB and LS films is the result of the nanostructured arrangement of the surface which increases the number of active sites. The sensors show a limit of detection in the range of 10(-5) mol/L.

Pure and Iron incorporated nanostructured Tungsten Oxide (WO3) thin films were investigated for gas sensing applications using noise spectroscopy. The WO3 sensor was able to detect lower concentrations (1 ppm-10 ppm) of NH3, CO, CH4 and Acetaldehyde gases at higher operating temperatures between 100oC to 250oC. The response of the WO3 sensor to NH3, CH4 and Acetaldehyde at lower temperatures (50oC-100oC) was significant when the sensor was photo-activated using blue-light emitting diode (Blue-LED). The WO3 with Fe (WO3:Fe) was found to show some response to Acetaldehyde gas only at relatively higher operating temperature (250oC) and gas concentration of 10 ppm.
