Boron–nitrogen containing compounds with high hydrogen contents as represented by ammonia borane (NH3BH3) have recently attracted intense interest for potential hydrogen storage applications. One such compound is [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 with a capacity of 18.2 wt% H. Two safe and efficient synthetic routes to [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 have been developed for the first time since it was discovered 50 years ago. The new synthetic routes avoid a dangerous starting chemical, tetraborane (B4H10), and afford a high yield. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals N–Hδ+Hδ−–B dihydrogen interactions in the [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8·18-crown-6 adduct. Extended strong dihydrogen bonds were observed in pure [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 through crystal structure solution based upon powder X-ray analysis. Pyrolysis of [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 leads to the formation of hydrogen gas together with appreciable amounts of volatile boranes below 160 °C.

EPR spectra of lithium potassium sulfate doped with NH3+ have been recorded at 9.05 GHz. A pair of satellites can be seen symmetrically situated on either side of the main lines. The separation of the satellite lines from the main line corresponds to the 7Li NMR frequency. The distance of the interacting 7Li nucleus from the unpaired electron in NH3+ is estimated to be 3.29 Å.

The conformation, organization, and phase transitions of alkyl chains in organic-inorganic hybrids based on the double pervoskite-slab lead iodides, (CH3NH3)(CH3(CH2)(n)NH3)(2)Pb2I7 (n = 11, 13, 15, 17) have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, and infrared vibrational spectroscopy. In these hybrid solids, double pervoskite (CH3NH3)Pb2I7 slabs are interleaved with alkyl ammonium chains with the anchored alkyl chains arranged as tilted bilayers and adopting a planar all-trans conformation at room temperature. The (CH3NH3)(CH3(CH2)(n)NH3)(2)Pb2I7 compounds exhibit a single reversible phase transition above room temperature with the associated enthalpy change varying linearly with alkyl chain length. This transition corresponds to the melting in two-dimensions of the alkyl chains of the anchored bilayer and is characterized by increased conformational disorder of the methylene units of the chain and loss of tilt angle coherence leading to an increase in the interslab spacing. By monitoring features in the infrared spectra that are characteristic of the global conformation of the alkyl chains, a quantitative relation between conformational disorder and melting of the anchored bilayer is established. It is found that, irrespective of the alkyl chain length, melting occurs when at least 60% of the chains in the anchored bilayer of (CH3NH3)(CH3(CH2)(n)NH3)(2)Pb2I7 have one or more gauche defects. This concentration is determined by the underlying lattice to which the alkyl chains are anchored.

The catalytic oxidation and decomposition of NH3 have been carried out over combustion synthesized Al2O3 and CeO2 supported Pt, Pd and Ag catalysts using temperature programmed reaction (TPR) technique in a packed bed tubular reactor. Metals are ionically dispersed over CeO2 and fine metal particles are found on Al2O3. NH3 oxidation occurs over 1% Pt/Al2O3, 1% Pd/Al2O3 and 1% Ag/Al2O3 at 175, 270 and 350 C respectively producing N-2, NO, N2O and H2O, whereas 1% Pt/CeO2, 1% Pd/CeO2 and 1% Ag/CeO2 give N-2 along with NO, N2O and H2O at 200, 225 and 250degreesC respectively. N-2 predominates over other nitrogen-containing products during the reaction on all catalysts. At less O-2 concentration, N-2 and H2O are the only products obtained during NH3 Oxidation. NH3 decomposition over all the catalysts occurs above 450degreesC.

The results of an experimental investigation of 1 keV electron irradiation of ices (deposited at 30 K) of (i) pure methanol and (ii) of a 1:1 mixture of NH3:CH3OH are reported. Molecular products formed within the ice were detected and monitored using FTIR spectroscopy. The products observed were methyl formate (H3COHCO), methane (CH4), hydroxymethyl (CH2OH), formamide (HCONH2), formic acid (HCOOH), formaldehyde (H2CO), formyl radical (HCO), cyanate ion (OCN-), isocyanic acid (HNCO), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The consequences of these results for prebiotic chemistry in the interstellar medium and star forming regions are discussed. Crown Copyright (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Modular chiral I3-organochalcogeno amines, ArYCH2CH(R)NH2 (4a-4g) where R = Me, Bz, Ph; and ArY = PhS, BzSe and 4-MeOC6H4Te respectively have been synthesized and characterized. Compounds 4a-4g were synthesized (Method II) from chiral aminoalkyl 13-methanesulfonate hydrochlorides, MsOCH2CH(R)NH3+ center dot Cl- (2a-2c) through nucleophilic displacement of MsO- with organochalcogenolate (ArY-). In another attempt (Method I) chiral beta-organotelluro amines (4a-4c) were prepared by deprotection of chiral N-boc I3-organotelluro amides, 4-MeOC6H4TeCH2CH(R)NH-Boc (3a-3c), which in turn, 13,-,1 were made from chiral N-boc 13-methanesulfonate amides (la-lc) and ArTeNa. 1H, and FTIR spectra of all the compounds (3a-3c and 4a-4g) were characteristic. The composition of 3a-3c was determined by elemental analysis. The a]TD values of 3b-3c and 4a-4g were determined. The single crystal structures of (S)-2b and (R)-2c were determined by X-Ray diffraction studies. Both (S)-2b and (R)2c were crystallized in orthorhombic system and the Flack parameter x was found 0.08(12) and 0.00(2) respectively. The crystal of (S)-2b contain two asymmetric units with gauche (A) and staggered (B) conformations. There are NH Cl-, NH-O and CH-O intra and intermolecular secondary interactions in (S)-2b and (R)-2c resulting in supramolecular structures. (C) 2015 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

Adsorption of a molecule or group with an atom which is less electronegative than oxygen (0) and directly interacting with the surface is very relevant to development of PtM (M = 3d-transition metal) catalysts with high activity. Here, we present theoretical analysis of the adsorption of NH3 molecule (N being less electronegative than 0) on (111) surfaces of PtM (Fe, Co, Ni) alloys using the first principles density functional approach. We find that, while NH3-Pt interaction is stronger than that of NH3 with the elemental M-surfaces, it is weaker than the strength of interaction of NH3 with M-site on the surface of PtM alloy. Background: In plants, nitrate (NO(3)(-)) nutrition gives rise to a natural N isotopic signature (delta(15)N), which correlates with the delta(15)N of the N source. However, little is known about the relationship between the delta(15)N of the N source and the (14)N/(15)N fractionation in plants under ammonium (NH(4)(+)) nutrition. When NH(4)(+) is the major N source, the two forms, NH(4)(+) and NH(3), are present in the nutrient solution. There is a 1.025 thermodynamic isotope effect between NH(3) (g) and NH(4)(+)(aq) which drives to a different delta(15)N. Nine plant species with different NH(4)(+)-sensitivities were cultured hydroponically with NO(3)(-) or NH(4)(+) as the sole N sources, and plant growth and delta(15)N were determined. Short-term NH(4)(+)/NH(3) uptake experiments at pH 6.0 and 9.0 (which favours NH(3) form) were carried out in order to support and substantiate our hypothesis. N source fractionation throughout the whole plant was interpreted on the basis of the relative transport of NH(4)(+) and NH(3). -- Results: Several NO(3)(-)-fed plants were consistently enriched in (15)N, whereas plants under NH(4)(+) nutrition were depleted of (15)N. It was shown that more sensitive plants to NH(4)(+) toxicity were the most depleted in (15)N. In parallel, N-deficient pea and spinach plants fed with (15)NH(4)(+) showed an increased level of NH(3) uptake at alkaline pH that was related to the (15)N depletion of the plant. Tolerant to NH(4)(+) pea plants or sensitive spinach plants showed similar trend on (15)N depletion while slight differences in the time kinetics were observed during the initial stages. The use of RbNO(3) as control discarded that the differences observed arise from pH detrimental effects. -- Conclusions: This article proposes that the negative values of delta(15)N in NH(4)(+)-fed plants are originated from NH(3) uptake by plants. Moreover, this depletion of the heavier N isotope is proportional to the NH(4)(+)/NH(3) toxicity in plants species. Therefore, we hypothesise that the low affinity transport system for NH(4)(+) may have two components: one that transports N in the molecular form and is associated with fractionation and another that transports N in the ionic form and is not associated with fractionation.

We describe the growth of GaN on Si (111) substrates with a AlGaN/AlN buffer layer by NH3-GSMBE. The influence of the AlN and AlGaN buffer layer thickness on the crack density of GaN has been investigated. It is found that the optimum thickness is 120 nm and 250 nm for AlN and AlGaN layers, respectively. The full width at half maximum of the GaN (0002) peak in the triple-crystal x-ray rocking curve measurement is about 15 arcmin.

Al0.58Ga0.42N epilayers are grown by ammonia gas source molecular beam epitaxy (NH3-MBE) on (0001) sapphire substrate using AlGaN buffer layer. The effects of the buffer layer growth temperature on the properties of Al0.58Ga0.42N epilayer are especially investigated. In-situ high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), double-crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoconductivity measurement and cathodoluminescence (CL) are used to characterize the samples. It is found that high growth temperature of AlGaN buffer layer would improve the crystalline quality, surface smoothness, optical quality and uniformity of the Al0.58Ga0.42N epilayer. The likely reason for such improvements is also suggested. (C) 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Epitaxial growth of AlN has been performed by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with ammonia. The structural properties of materials were studied by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD and TEM diffraction pattern confirm the AlN is single crystalline 2H-polytype with the epitaxial relationship of (0001)AlNparallel to(111)Si, [11 (2) over bar0](AlN)parallel to[110](Si), [10 (1) over bar0](AlN)parallel to[11 (2) over bar](Si). Micro-Raman scattering measurement shows that the E-2 (high) and A(1) (LO) phonon mode shift 9 cm(-1) toward the low frequency, which shows the existence of large tensile strain in the AlN films. Furthermore, the appearance of forbidden A, (TO) mode and its anomalous shift toward high frequency was found and explained. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
