Co-evaluation as a strategy to improve working group dynamics: an experience in Sport Sciences

The aim of this study was to analyze if the perceptions of students before and after carrying out the work, that is, their perception of different aspects of the functioning of the group, the working skills acquired as well as those they think that need to be improved, varied depending on whether the contribution of the different members of the group was being co-evaluated or not. 144 students of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences participated in this study. In order to analyze the students' perception of group work the adapted questionnaire by Bourne et al. (2001) was used. Results showed that groups which implemented co-evaluation assessed more negatively the experience in general than those which did not. However, co-evaluation groups perceived their competence to work as a team had improved to a greater extent than the groups without co-evaluation, evaluating more positively both the performance and the result of work and increasing their knowledge of the other team members. Using a co-evaluation system seems to generate both a better assessment of the running of the team and the result of its work.

La Diplomacia del Jazz como una estrategia de política exterior de Estados Unidos durante la Guerra Fría

En aras de contener el comunismo y expandir la cultura norteamericana y los valores de democracia y libertad, Estados Unidos lanzó una estrategia de política exterior denominada la Diplomacia del Jazz, que consistía en promocionar internacionalmente el jazz mediante dos artificios: primero, la celebración de conciertos de los intérpretes más representativos de este género en diferentes partes del mundo; y segundo, la trasmisión de programas radiales sobre jazz en emisoras de difusión internacional y así poder mostrar la “superioridad” cultural de su país en detrimento de la otra superpotencia, la Unión Soviética. De este modo, la presente monografía tiene como fin estudiar de qué manera se instrumentalizó dicha estrategia como un medio para proyectar positivamente la imagen de los EEUU durante la Guerra Fría, concretamente entre 1954 y 1968, a partir de la teoría del realismo progresivo de Joseph Nye.

Estudo da técnica de enchimento de chanfro do aço naval pelo processo GMAW-CW

Nesse trabalho estudou-se a viabilidade operacional e as características econômicas e geométrica da técnica do processo de soldagem GMAW-CW (alimentação adicional de um arame frio) em comparação Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). O sistema de alimentação de arame frio foi projetado e adaptado a pistola de soldagem MIG/MAG. Utilizou-se uma fonte eletrônica de múltiplos processos ajustada em tensão constante e CC+, a proteção gasosa foi uma mistura 75%Ar+25%CO<sup>2 e CO<sup>2 comercialmente puro. O arame utilizado foi o da classe ER70S-6 com diametro de 1,2 mm para o arame eletrodo e 1,0 mm para o arame frio, os dois arames foram alimentados em cabeçotes independentes. As variáveis operacionais de entrada foram: a velocidade de alimentação de arame energizado, em três níveis, 4, 6 e 8 m/min e a velocidade de alimentação do arame frio em 50%, 60% e 70% da velocidade de alimentação do arame energizado. As soldagens foram automatizadas em simples deposição no sentido empurrando e o posicionamento do arame frio, em um único nível, Tandem em chanfro em “U” de chapas de aço ASTM 1020. As variáveis de resposta utilizadas foram: inspeção superficial dos cordões; análise da geometria (largura, penetração, reforço e diluição) da solda e econômicas (taxa de fusão, taxa de deposição, rendimento e custo operacional). Os resultados indicaram que para a análise superficial, com o uso do gás Ar25%CO<sup>2 a superfície dos cordões mostraram-se mais homogêneas em relação ao CO<sup>2 e com menor índice de salpicagem, para a análise das características econômicas, o processo GMAW-CW sempre foi superior ao processo convencional, quanto aos custos operacionais o processo convencional mostrou-se menor, porém não houve o preenchimento do chanfro, o que ocorreu com a utilização do processo GMAW-CW.

Práticas de gestão da melhoria contínua e aprendizado e suas contribuições para a capacidade de inovação na indústria de construção naval do Brasil

After years of stagnation, the naval construction industry in Brazil has been experiencing a period of recovery caused by investments in the oil and gas sector and the implementation of governmental programs that aimed to regenerate it. However, efforts in learning and innovations are needed in order to reinsert the country in this activity and achieve international levels of competitiveness. Based on literature about learning processes and continuous improvement practices and their impact in the innovative and productive processes, this paper aims to identify the main tendencies, mechanisms and procedures to improve the construction and management processes in the Brazilian naval construction industry. The methodology used for the data analysis classifies obtained information from magazines and annals of congresses of the sector, according to the established analysis categories (phenomena). Such categories study information related to the productive and technological processes of the industry, the main internal and external relations of the industrial park, the management of resources and processes, policies, investments, etc. The data was collected in the period 2004-2010, and more than 500 registers that show a dominance of the investment phenomenon, especially in the increase of productive capacity, were catalogued. In addition to this, there is evidence of modernization in the manufacturing plan and the equipment, diverse forms of cooperation, implementation of human resources management practices and engineering or processes and products. Hence, a process of catching up governs and is guided by modernization and increase training in this industry.

THE SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY CO-ADD: A GALAXY PHOTOMETRIC REDSHIFT CATALOG

We present and describe a catalog of galaxy photometric redshifts (photo-z) for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Co-add Data. We use the artificial neural network (ANN) technique to calculate the photo-z and the nearest neighbor error method to estimate photo-z errors for similar to 13 million objects classified as galaxies in the co-add with r < 24.5. The photo-z and photo-z error estimators are trained and validated on a sample of similar to 83,000 galaxies that have SDSS photometry and spectroscopic redshifts measured by the SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7), the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Field Galaxy Survey, the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe Data Release 3, the VIsible imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph-Very Large Telescope Deep Survey, and the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. For the best ANN methods we have tried, we find that 68% of the galaxies in the validation set have a photo-z error smaller than sigma(68) = 0.031. After presenting our results and quality tests, we provide a short guide for users accessing the public data.

Relative CO(2)/NH(3) selectivities of mammalian aquaporins 0-9

Previous work showed that aquaporin 1 (AQP1), AQP4-M23, and AQP5 each has a characteristic CO(2)/NH(3) and CO(2)/H(2)O permeability ratio. The goal of the present study is to characterize AQPs 0-9, which traffic to the plasma membrane when heterologously expressed in Xenopus oocytes. We use video microscopy to compute osmotic water permeability (P(f)) and microelectrodes to record transient changes in surface pH (ΔpH(S)) caused by CO(2) or NH(3) influx. Subtracting respective values for day-matched, H(2)O-injected control oocytes yields the channel-specific values P(f)* and ΔpH(S)*. We find that P(f)* is significantly >0 for all AQPs tested except AQP6. (ΔpH(S)*)(CO(2)) is significantly >0 for AQP0, AQP1, AQP4-M23, AQP5, AQP6, and AQP9. (ΔpH(S)*)(NH(3)) is >0 for AQP1, AQP3, AQP6, AQP7, AQP8, and AQP9. The ratio (ΔpH(S)*)(CO(2))/P(f)* falls in the sequence AQP6 (∞) > AQP5 > AQP4-M23 > AQP0 ≅ AQP1 ≅ AQP9 > others (0). The ratio (ΔpH(S)*)(NH(3))/P(f)* falls in the sequence AQP6 (∞) > AQP3 ≅ AQP7 ≅ AQP8 ≅ AQP9 > AQP1 > others (0). Finally, the ratio (ΔpH(S)*)(CO(2))/(-ΔpH(S)*)(NH(3)) falls in the sequence AQP0 (∞) ≅ AQP4-M23 ≅ AQP5 > AQP6 > AQP1 > AQP9 > AQP3 (0) ≅ AQP7 ≅ AQP8. The ratio (ΔpH(S)*)(CO(2))/(-ΔpH(S)*)(NH(3)) is indeterminate for both AQP2 and AQP4-M1. In summary, we find that mammalian AQPs exhibit a diverse range of selectivities for CO(2) vs. NH(3) vs. H(2)O. As a consequence, by expressing specific combinations of AQPs, cells could exert considerable control over the movements of each of these three substances

Percentage of cultured cell-populations that stained positively and/or negatively for apoptotic markers cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved PARP, following DNA damage treatments induced by doxorubicin and TNF-alpha co-treatments

The present dataset contains the source data for Figure 2B of Tentner et al. (2012). The data shows the percentage of cultured cell-populations that stained positively and/or negatively for apoptotic markers cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved PARP, following DNA damage treatments induced by various doses of doxorubicin (0, 2 and 10 µmole/L) in the presence (100 ng/mL) or absence (0 ng/mL) of TNF-alpha co-treatment. For the six treatment conditions investigated, cell counts were made by flow cytometry at times 6, 12, 24, and 48 h following treatment; CULTURE DETAILS: U2OS cells were obtained from ATCC were maintained at 21% oxygen and 5% CO2 in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum, penicillin, streptomycin, 2mM L-glutamine, and used within 15-20 passages. The first thymidine block was released by washing the plates three times with PBS, and incubating them in fresh thymidine-free media for 12 h. A second thymidine block was then performed by re-addition of thymidine to 2.5 mM followed by incubation for an additional 18 h. Media was aspirated, plates were washed 3 with PBS, and replaced with fresh media in the presence or absence of 10 mM aphidicolin; ANALYSIS DETAILS: See supplementary journal publication; RESULT: The authors of the supplementary journal publication conclude that TNF enhances dose-dependent cell death following doxorubicin-induced DNA damage with minimal affect on dose-dependent cell-cycle arrest.
