A magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-supported di(2-pyridyl)methanol palladium dichloride complex was prepared via click chemistry. The MNP-supported catalyst was evaluated in Suzuki coupling reaction in term of activity and recyclability in DMF. It was found to be highly efficient for Suzuki coupling reaction using aryl bromides as substrates and could be easily separated by an external magnet and reused in five consecutive runs without obvious loss of activity.

Brain is one of the safe sanctuaries for HIV and, in turn, continuously supplies active viruses to the periphery. Additionally, HIV infection in brain results in several mild-to-severe neuro-immunological complications termed neuroAIDS. One-tenth of HIV-infected population is addicted to recreational drugs such as opiates, alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, etc. which share common target-areas in the brain with HIV. Interestingly, intensity of neuropathogenesis is remarkably enhanced due to exposure of recreational drugs during HIV infection. Current treatments to alleviate either the individual or synergistic effects of abusive drugs and HIV on neuronal modulations are less effective at CNS level, basically due to impermeability of therapeutic molecules across blood-brain barrier (BBB). Despite exciting advancement of nanotechnology in drug delivery, existing nanovehicles such as dendrimers, polymers, micelles, etc. suffer from the lack of adequate BBB penetrability before the drugs are engulfed by the reticuloendothelial system cells as well as the uncertainty that if and when the nanocarrier reaches the brain. Therefore, in order to develop a fast, target-specific, safe, and effective approach for brain delivery of anti-addiction, anti-viral and neuroprotective drugs, we exploited the potential of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) which, in recent years, has attracted significant importance in biomedical applications. We hypothesize that under the influence of external (non-invasive) magnetic force, MNPs can deliver these drugs across BBB in most effective manner. Accordingly, in this dissertation, I delineated the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of MNPs bound anti-opioid, anti-HIV and neuroprotective drugs for delivery in brain. I have developed a liposome-based novel magnetized nanovehicle which, under the influence of external magnetic forces, can transmigrate and effectively deliver drugs across BBB without compromising its integrity. It is expected that the developed nanoformulations may be of high therapeutic significance for neuroAIDS and for drug addiction as well.

In this paper, for the first time, we have reported the novel synthesis of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) dendrite kind of nanomaterial. The proposed r-GO dendrite possesses multifunctional properties in various fields of sensing and separation. The dendrite was synthesized by chemical reaction in different steps. Initially, the r-GO sheet was conjugated with silane group modified magnetic nanoparticle, resulting in nanoparticle decorated r-GO. The above r-GO sheet was further reacted with a new r-GO sheet, resulting in the formation of r-GO dendrite type of structure. Multifunctional behavior of this r-GO dendrite structure was studied by different methods. First, magnetic properties were studied by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and it was found that dendrite structure shows good magnetic susceptibility (180.2 emu/g). The proposed r-GO dendrite also shows a very good antibacterial behavior for Escherichia coli and excellent electrochemical behavior towards ferrocyanide probe molecule. Along with these, it also acts as a substrate for the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymer for europium metal ion, a lanthanide. The proposed imprinted sensor shows a very high selectivity and sensitivity for europium metal ion (limit of detection= 0.019 mu g L-1) in aqueous as well as real samples. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. This work attempts to bring critical insights into the electromagnetic shielding efficiency in polymeric nanocomposites with respect to the particle size of magnetic nanoparticles added along with or without a conductive inclusion. To gain insight, various Ni-Fe (NixFe1-x; x = 10, 20, 40; Ni: nickel, Fe: iron) alloys were prepared by a vacuum arc melting process and different particle sizes were then achieved by a controlled grinding process for different time scales. Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF based composites involving different particle sizes of the Ni-Fe alloy were prepared with or without multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by a wet grinding approach. The Ni-Fe particles were thoroughly characterized with respect to their microstructure and magnetization; and the electromagnetic (EM) shielding efficiency (SE) of the resulting composites was obtained from the scattering parameters using a vector network analyzer in a broad range of frequencies. The saturation magnetization of Ni-Fe nanoparticles and the bulk electrical conductivity of PVDF/Ni-Fe composites scaled with increasing particle size of NiFe. Interestingly, the PVDF/Ni-Fe/MWNT composites showed a different trend where the bulk electrical conductivity and SE scaled with decreasing particle size of the Ni-Fe alloy. A total SE of similar to 35 dB was achieved with 50 wt% of Ni60Fe40 and 3 wt% MWNTs. More interestingly, the PVDF/Ni-Fe composites shielded the EM waves mostly by reflection whereas, the PVDF/Ni-Fe/MWNT shielded mostly by absorption. A minimum reflection loss of similar to 58 dB was achieved in the PVDF/Ni-Fe/MWNT composites in the X-band (8-12 GHz) for a particular size of Ni-Fe alloy nanoparticles. This study brings new insights into the EM shielding efficiency in PVDF/magnetic nanoparticle based composites in the presence and absence of conducting inclusion.

A range of lanthanum strontium manganates (La1−xSrxMnO3–LSMO) where 0 ≤ x < 0.4 were prepared using a modified peroxide sol–gel synthesis method. The magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) clusters obtained for each of the materials were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and infra-red (IR) spectroscopy in order to confirm the crystalline phases, crystallite size and cluster morphology. The magnetic properties of the materials were assessed using the Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to evaluate the magnetic susceptibility, Curie temperature (Tc) and static hysteretic losses. Induction heating experiments also provided an insight into the magnetocaloric effect for each material. The specific absorption rate (SAR) of the materials was evaluated experimentally and via numerical simulations. The magnetic properties and heating data were linked with the crystalline structure to make predictions with respect to the best LSMO composition for mild hyperthermia (41 °C ≤ T ≤ 46 °C). La0.65Sr0.35MnO3, with crystallite diameter of 82.4 nm, (agglomerate size of ∼10 μm), Tc of 89 °C and SAR of 56 W gMn−1 at a concentration 10 mg mL−1 gave the optimal induction heating results (Tmax of 46.7 °C) and was therefore deemed as most suitable for the purposes of mild hyperthermia, vide infra.

Commercial samples of Magnetite with size ranging from 25–30nm were coated with polyaniline by using radio frequency plasma polymerization to achieve a core shell structure of magnetic nanoparticle (core)–Polyaniline (shell). High resolution transmission electron microscopy images confirm the core shell architecture of polyaniline coated iron oxide. The dielectric properties of the material were studied before and after plasma treatment. The polymer coated magnetite particles exhibited a large dielectric permittivity with respect to uncoated samples. The dielectric behavior was modeled using a Maxwell–Wagner capacitor model. A plausible mechanism for the enhancement of dielectric permittivity is proposed

There is a recent interest to use inorganic-based magnetic nanoparticles as a vehicle to carry biomolecules for various biophysical applications, but direct attachment of the molecules is known to alter their conformation leading to attenuation in activity. In addition, surface immobilization has been limited to monolayer coverage. It is shown that alternate depositions of negatively charged protein molecules, typically bovine serum albumin (BSA) with a positively charged aminocarbohydrate template such as glycol chitosan (GC) on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle surface as a colloid, are carried out under pH 7.4. Circular dichroism (CD) clearly reveals that the secondary structure of the entrapped BSA sequential depositions in this manner remains totally unaltered which is in sharp contrast to previous attempts. Probing the binding properties of the entrapped BSA using small molecules (Site I and Site II drug compounds) confirms for the first time the full retention of its biological activity as compared with native BSA, which also implies the ready accessibility of the entrapped protein molecules through the porous overlayers. This work clearly suggests a new method to immobilize and store protein molecules beyond monolayer adsorption on a magnetic nanoparticle surface without much structural alteration. This may find applications in magnetic recoverable enzymes or protein delivery.

In this work we evaluate the effectiveness of computed tomography images as a tool to determine magnetic nanoparticle biodistribution over biological tissues. For this purpose, tomography images for magnetic nanoparticles, composed of Fe(3)O(4), coated with 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), were generated at several material concentrations. The comparison of CT numbers, calculated from these images generated at clinical conditions, with typical CT numbers for biological tissues, shows that the detection of nanoparticle in most tissues is only possible for high material concentrations. Loaded microspheres with a silicon (IV) phthalocyanine derivative (NzPC) acting as a photosensitizer were prepared from polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate (PHBHV) and poly(ecaprolactone) (PCL) polymers using the emulsification solvent evaporation method (EE). The aim of our study was to prepare two systems of these biodegradable PHBHV/PCL microspheres. The first one containing only photosensitizer previously incorporated in the PHBHV and poly(ecaprolactone) (PCL) microspheres and the second one with the post magnetization of the DDS with magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetic fluid is successfully used for controlled incorporation of nanosized magnetic particles within the micron-sized template. This is the first time that we could get a successful pos incorporation of nanosized magnetic particles in a previously-prepared polymeric template. This procedure opens a great number of possibilities of post-functionalization of polymeric micro or nanoparticles with different bioactive materials. The NzPC release profile of the systems is ideal for PDT, the zeta potential and the size particle are stable upon aging in time. In vitro studies were evaluated using gingival fibroblastic cell line. The dark citotoxicity, the phototoxicity and the AC magnetic field assays of the as-prepared nanomagnetic composite were evaluated and the cellular viability analyzed by the classical test of MU.

This paper reports on the advancement of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) as stable dispersions of surface-modified gamma-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid, 1-n-butyl 3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BMI.NTf2). The MNPs were obtained via coprecipitation and were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. The surface-modified MNPs (SM-MNPs) were obtained via the silanization of the MNPs with the aid of 1-butyl-3[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]imidazolium chloride (BMSPI.Cl). The SM-MNPs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and Fourier trail: form infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy and by magnetic measurements. The FTIR-ATR spectra of the SM-MNPs exhibited characteristic absorptions of the imidazolium and those of the Fe-O-Si-C moieties, confirming the presence of BMSPI.Cl on the MNP surface. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the SM-MNPs were modified by at least one BMSPI.Cl monolayer. The MILs were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and magnetic measurements. The Raman and DSC results indicated an interaction between the SM-MNPs and the IL. This interaction promotes the formation of a supramolecular structure close to the MNP surface that mimics the IL structure and is responsible for the stability of the MIL. Magnetic measurements of the MILs indicated no hysteresis. Superparamagnetic behavior and a saturation magnetization of similar to 22 emu/g could be inferred from the magnetic measurements of a sample containing 50% w/w gamma-Fe2O3 SM-MNP/BMI-NTf2.

The magnetic and thermal properties of TbAl2 nanosized alloys (diameters, 12 nm $\leqslant D\leqslant $ 20 nm) obtained by high-energy milling are characterised by specific heat, magnetisation and neutron scattering. The specific heat shows that the λ-anomaly at Curie temperature vanishes when the milling time reaches 300 h and its field variation shows a broad peak around 70 K disclosing a disordered magnetic state. The thermal variation of magnetization follows a Bloch process with a decrease of the stiffness constant and a faster demagnetisation with a quadratic exponent instead of the bulk ordinary ${T}^{3/2}$-dependence. The magnetic moment reduction in the nanosized alloys follows a 1/D dependence, remarking the role of disordered moment surface. The Rietveld analysis of the neutron diffraction patterns indicates a collinear ferromagnetic structure, with a reduction of the Tb-magnetic moment when decreasing the particle size. The temperature dependent overall magnetic signal of nanoparticles is derived from small-angle neutron scattering. A magnetic nanoparticle structure with an ordered ferromagnetic core and a disordered surface layer is proposed.

A novel magnetic nanoparticle-supported oxime palladacycle catalyst was successfully prepared and characterized. The magnetically recoverable catalyst was evaluated in the room temperature Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of aryl iodides and bromides in aqueous media. The catalyst was shown to be highly active under phosphine-free and low Pd loading (0.3 mol%) conditions. The catalyst could be easily separated from the reaction mixture using an external magnet and reused for six consecutive runs without significant loss of activity.

Parenteral use of drugs; such as opiates exert immunomodulatory effects and serve as a cofactor in the progression of HIV-1 infection, thereby potentiating HIV related neurotoxicity ultimately leading to progression of NeuroAIDS. Morphine exposure is known to induce apoptosis, down regulate cAMP response element-binding (CREB) expression and decrease in dendritic branching and spine density in cultured cells. Use of neuroprotective agent; brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), which protects neurons against these effects, could be of therapeutic benefit in the treatment of opiate addiction. Previous studies have shown that BDNF was not transported through the blood brain barrier (BBB) in-vivo.; and hence it is not effectivein-vivo. Therefore development of a drug delivery system that can cross BBB may have significant therapeutic advantage. In the present study, we hypothesized that magnetically guided nanocarrier may provide a viable approach for targeting BDNF across the BBB. We developed a magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) based carrier bound to BDNF and evaluated its efficacy and ability to transmigrate across the BBB using an in-vitro BBB model. The end point determinations of BDNF that crossed BBB were apoptosis, CREB expression and dendritic spine density measurement. We found that transmigrated BDNF was effective in suppressing the morphine induced apoptosis, inducing CREB expression and restoring the spine density. Our results suggest that the developed nanocarrier will provide a potential therapeutic approach to treat opiate addiction, protect neurotoxicity and synaptic density degeneration.

The aim of this dissertation was to investigate flexible polymer-nanoparticle composites with unique magnetic and electrical properties. Toward this goal, two distinct projects were carried out. The first project explored the magneto-dielectric properties and morphology of flexible polymer-nanoparticle composites that possess high permeability (µ), high permittivity (ε) and minimal dielectric, and magnetic loss (tan δε, tan δµ). The main materials challenges were the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticle fillers displaying high saturation magnetization (Ms), limited coercivity, and their homogeneous dispersion in a polymeric matrix. Nanostructured magnetic fillers including polycrystalline iron core-shell nanoparticles, and constructively assembled superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized, and dispersed uniformly in an elastomer matrix to minimize conductive losses. The resulting composites have demonstrated promising permittivity (22.3), permeability (3), and sustained low dielectric (0.1), magnetic (0.4) loss for frequencies below 2 GHz. This study demonstrated nanocomposites with tunable magnetic resonance frequency, which can be used to develop compact and flexible radio frequency devices with high efficiency. The second project focused on fundamental research regarding methods for the design of highly conductive polymer-nanoparticle composites that can maintain high electrical conductivity under tensile strain exceeding 100%. We investigated a simple solution spraying method to fabricate stretchable conductors based on elastomeric block copolymer fibers and silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles were assembled both in and around block copolymer fibers forming interconnected dual nanoparticle networks, resulting in both in-fiber conductive pathways and additional conductive pathways on the outer surface of the fibers. Stretchable composites with conductivity values reaching 9000 S/cm maintained 56% of their initial conductivity after 500 cycles at 100% strain. The developed manufacturing method in this research could pave the way towards direct deposition of flexible electronic devices on any shaped substrate. The electrical and electromechanical properties of these dual silver nanoparticle network composites make them promising materials for the future construction of stretchable circuitry for displays, solar cells, antennas, and strain and tactility sensors.
