Ergonomic interventions such as increased scheduled breaks or job rotation have been proposed to reduce upper limb muscle fatigue in repetitive low-load work. This review was performed to summarize and analyze the studies investigating the effect of job rotation and work-rest schemes, as well as, work pace, cycle time and duty cycle, on upper limb muscle fatigue. The effects of these work organization factors on subjective fatigue or discomfort were also analyzed. This review was based on relevant articles published in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. The studies included in this review were performed in humans and assessed muscle fatigue in upper limbs. 14 articles were included in the systematic review. Few studies were performed in a real work environment and the most common methods used to assess muscle fatigue were surface electromyography (EMG). No consistent results were found related to the effects of job rotation on muscle activity and subjective measurements of fatigue. Rest breaks had some positive effects, particularly in perceived discomfort. The increase in work pace reveals a higher muscular load in specific muscles. The duration of experiments and characteristics of participants appear to be the factors that most have influenced the results. Future research should be focused on the improvement of the experimental protocols and instrumentation, in order to the outcomes represent adequately the actual working conditions. Relevance to industry: Introducing more physical workload variation in low-load repetitive work is considered an effective ergonomic intervention against muscle fatigue and musculoskeletal disorders in industry. Results will be useful to identify the need of future research, which will eventually lead to the adoption of best industrial work practices according to the workers capabilities.

Short term load forecasting is one of the key inputs to optimize the management of power system. Almost 60-65% of revenue expenditure of a distribution company is against power purchase. Cost of power depends on source of power. Hence any optimization strategy involves optimization in scheduling power from various sources. As the scheduling involves many technical and commercial considerations and constraints, the efficiency in scheduling depends on the accuracy of load forecast. Load forecasting is a topic much visited in research world and a number of papers using different techniques are already presented. The accuracy of forecast for the purpose of merit order dispatch decisions depends on the extent of the permissible variation in generation limits. For a system with low load factor, the peak and the off peak trough are prominent and the forecast should be able to identify these points to more accuracy rather than minimizing the error in the energy content. In this paper an attempt is made to apply Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with supervised learning based approach to make short term load forecasting for a power system with comparatively low load factor. Such power systems are usual in tropical areas with concentrated rainy season for a considerable period of the year

We investigated the recruitment behaviour of low threshold motor units in flexor digitorum superficialis by altering two biomechanical constraints: the load against which the muscle worked and the initial muscle length. The load was increased using isotonic (low load), loaded dynamic (intermediate load) and isometric (high load) contractions in two studies. The initial muscle position reflected resting muscle length in series A, and a longer length with digit III fully extended in series B. Intramuscular EMG was recorded from 48 single motor units in 10 experiments on five healthy subjects, 21 units in series A and,27 in series B, while subjects performed ramp up, hold and ramp down contractions. Increasing the load on the muscle decreased the force, displacement and firing rate of single motor units at recruitment at shorter muscle lengths (P < 0.001, dependent t-test). At longer muscle lengths this recruitment pattern was observed between loaded dynamic and isotonic contractions, but not between isometric and loaded dynamic contractions. Thus, the recruitment properties of single motor units in human flexor digitorum superficialis are sensitive to changes in both imposed external loads and the initial length of the muscle. ABSTRACT The factors responsible for the phenotypic heterogeneity of memory CD4 T cells are unclear. In the present study, we have identified a third population of memory CD4 T cells characterized as CD45RA+CCRT that, based on its replication history and the homeostatic proliferative capacity, was at an advanced stage of differentiation. Three different phenotypic patterns of memory CD4 T cell responses were delineated under different conditions of antigen (Ag) persistence and load using CD45RA and CCR7 as markers of memory T cells. Mono-phenotypic CD45RA'CCR7+ or CD45RA'CCR7' CD4 T cell responses were associated with conditions of Ag clearance (tetanus toxoid-specific CD4 T cell response) or Ag persistence and high load (chronic HIV-1 and primary CMV infections), respectively. Multi-phenotypic CD45RA CCR7+, CD45RA'CCRT and CD45RA+CCRT CD4 T cell responses were associated with protracted Ag exposure and low load (chronic CMV, EBV and HSV infections and HIV-1 infection in long-term nonprogressors). The mono-phenotypic CD45RA'CCR7+ response was typical of central memory (TCM) IL-2-secreting CD4 T cells, the mono-phenotypic CD45RA CCRT response of effector memory (TEM) IFN-γ -secreting CD4 T cells and the multi-phenotypic response of both IL-2- and IFN-γ -secreting cells. The present results indicate that the heterogeneity of different Ag-specific CD4 T cell responses is regulated by Ag exposure and Ag load.

The factors responsible for the phenotypic heterogeneity of memory CD4 T cells are unclear. In the present study, we have identified a third population of memory CD4 T cells characterized as CD45RA(+)CCR7(-) that, based on its replication history and the homeostatic proliferative capacity, was at an advanced stage of differentiation. Three different phenotypic patterns of memory CD4 T cell responses were delineated under different conditions of antigen (Ag) persistence and load using CD45RA and CCR7 as markers of memory T cells. Mono-phenotypic CD45RA(-)CCR7(+) or CD45RA(-)CCR7(-) CD4 T cell responses were associated with conditions of Ag clearance (tetanus toxoid-specific CD4 T cell response) or Ag persistence and high load (chronic HIV-1 and primary CMV infections), respectively. Multi-phenotypic CD45RA(-)CCR7(+), CD45RA(-)CCR7(-) and CD45RA(+)CCR7(-) CD4 T cell responses were associated with protracted Ag exposure and low load (chronic CMV, EBV and HSV infections and HIV-1 infection in long-term nonprogressors). The mono-phenotypic CD45RA(-)CCR7(+) response was typical of central memory (T(CM)) IL-2-secreting CD4 T cells, the mono-phenotypic CD45RA(-)CCR7(-) response of effector memory (T(EM)) IFN-gamma-secreting CD4 T cells and the multi-phenotypic response of both IL-2- and IFN-gamma-secreting cells. The present results indicate that the heterogeneity of different Ag-specific CD4 T cell responses is regulated by Ag exposure and Ag load.

Increasing evidence suggests that working memory and perceptual processes are dynamically interrelated due to modulating activity in overlapping brain networks. However, the direct influence of working memory on the spatio-temporal brain dynamics of behaviorally relevant intervening information remains unclear. To investigate this issue, subjects performed a visual proximity grid perception task under three different visual-spatial working memory (VSWM) load conditions. VSWM load was manipulated by asking subjects to memorize the spatial locations of 6 or 3 disks. The grid was always presented between the encoding and recognition of the disk pattern. As a baseline condition, grid stimuli were presented without a VSWM context. VSWM load altered both perceptual performance and neural networks active during intervening grid encoding. Participants performed faster and more accurately on a challenging perceptual task under high VSWM load as compared to the low load and the baseline condition. Visual evoked potential (VEP) analyses identified changes in the configuration of the underlying sources in one particular period occurring 160-190 ms post-stimulus onset. Source analyses further showed an occipito-parietal down-regulation concurrent to the increased involvement of temporal and frontal resources in the high VSWM context. Together, these data suggest that cognitive control mechanisms supporting working memory may selectively enhance concurrent visual processing related to an independent goal. More broadly, our findings are in line with theoretical models implicating the engagement of frontal regions in synchronizing and optimizing mnemonic and perceptual resources towards multiple goals.

Yhteiskunnan riippuvuus sähköstä on lisääntynyt voimakkaasti viime vuosikymmenien aikana. Tutkimuksessa päähuomio on haja-asutusalueiden 20 kV keskijänniteverkon kehittämisessä, sillä yli 90 % asiakkaiden kokemista keskeytyksistä johtuu keskijänniteverkon vioista. Erityisesti tutkimuksessa on analysoitu uutena tekniikkana 1000 V jännitteen käyttömahdollisuutta jakeluverkkojen kehittämisessä. 1000 V jakeluverkkojen osalta tutkimustyön tuloksia on sovellettu suomalaisessa Suur-Savon Sähkö Oy:ssä. Käytännön kokemuksia 1000 V jakelujärjestelmästä on useista kymmenistä kohteista.

The association between working hours and work ability was examined in a cross-sectional study of male (N = 156) and female (N = 1092) nurses in three public hospitals. Working hours were considered in terms of their professional and domestic hours per week and their combined impact; total work load. Logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between total work load and inadequate work ability index (WAI) for females only. Females reported a higher proportion of inadequate WAI, fewer professional work hours but longer domestic work hours. There were no significant differences in total work load by gender. The combination of professional and domestic work hours in females seemed to best explain their lower work ability. The findings suggest that investigations into female well-being need to consider their total work load. Our male sample may have lacked sufficient power to detect a relationship between working hours and work ability. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Recently, many studies about a network active during rest and deactivated during tasks emerged in the literature: the default mode network (DMN). Spatial and temporal DMN features are important markers for psychiatric diseases. Another prominent indicator of cognitive functioning, yielding information about the mental condition in health and disease, is working memory (WM) processing. In EEG studies, frontal-midline theta power has been shown to increase with load during WM retention in healthy subjects. From these findings, the conclusion can be drawn that an increase in resting state DMN activity may go along with an increase in theta power in high-load WM conditions. We followed this hypothesis in a study on 17 healthy subjects performing a visual Sternberg WM task. The DMN was obtained by a BOLD-ICA approach and its dynamics represented by the percent-strength during pre-stimulus periods. DMN dynamics were temporally correlated with EEG theta spectral power from retention intervals. This so-called covariance mapping yielded the spatial distribution of the theta EEG fluctuations associated with the dynamics of the DMN. In line with previous findings, theta power was increased at frontal-midline electrodes in high- versus low-load conditions during early WM retention. However, load-dependent correlations of DMN with theta power resulted in primarily positive correlations in low-load conditions, while during high-load conditions negative correlations of DMN activity and theta power were observed at frontal-midline electrodes. This DMN-dependent load effect reached significance during later retention. Our results show a complex and load-dependent interaction of pre-stimulus DMN activity and theta power during retention, varying over the course of the retention period. Since both, WM performance and DMN activity, are markers of mental health, our results could be important for further investigations of psychiatric populations.

Recently, multiple studies showed that spatial and temporal features of a task-negative default mode network (DMN) (Greicius et al., 2003) are important markers for psychiatric diseases (Balsters et al., 2013). Another prominent indicator of cognitive functioning, yielding information about the mental condition in health and disease, is working memory (WM) processing. In EEG and MEG studies, frontal-midline theta power has been shown to increase with load during WM retention in healthy subjects (Brookes et al., 2011). Negative correlations between DMN activity and theta amplitude have been found during resting state (Jann et al., 2010) as well as during WM (Michels et al., 2010). Likewise, WM training resulted in higher resting state theta power as well as increased small-worldness of the resting brain (Langer et al., 2013). Further, increased fMRI connectivity between nodes of the DMN correlated with better WM performance (Hampson et al., 2006). Hence, the brain’s default state might influence it’s functioning during task. We therefore hypothesized correlations between pre-stimulus DMN activity and EEG-theta power during WM maintenance, depending on the WM load. 17 healthy subjects performed a Sternberg WM task while being measured simultaneously with EEG and fMRI. Data was recorded within a multicenter-study: 12 subjects were measured in Zurich with a 64-channels MR-compatible system (Brain Products) in a 3T Philips scanner, 5 subjects with a 96-channel MR-compatible system (Brain Products) in a 3T Siemens Scanner in Bern. The DMN components was obtained by a group BOLD-ICA approach over the full task duration (figure 1). The subject-wise dynamics were obtained by back-reconstructed onto each subject’s fMRI data and normalized to percent signal change values. The single trial pre-stimulus-DMN activation was then temporally correlated with the single trial EEG-theta (3-8 Hz) spectral power during retention intervals. This so-called covariance mapping (Jann et al., 2010) yielded the spatial distribution of the theta EEG fluctuations during retention associated with the dynamics of the pre-stimulus DMN. In line with previous findings, theta power was increased at frontal-midline electrodes in high- versus low-load conditions during early WM retention (figure 2). However, correlations of DMN with theta power resulted in primarily positive correlations in low-load conditions, while during high-load conditions negative correlations of DMN activity and theta power were observed at frontal-midline electrodes. This DMN-dependent load effect reached significance in the middle of the retention period (TANOVA, p<0.05) (figure 3). Our results show a complex and load-dependent interaction of pre-stimulus DMN activity and theta power during retention, varying over time. While at a more global, load-independent view pre-stimulus DMN activity correlated positively with theta power during retention, the correlation was inversed during certain time windows in high-load trials, meaning that in trials with enhanced pre-stimulus DMN activity theta power decreases during retention. Since both WM performance and DMN activity are markers of mental health our results could be important for further investigations of psychiatric populations.
