Assessment of the condition of connectors in the overhead electricity network has traditionally relied on the heat dissipation or voltage drop from existing load current (50Hz) as a measurable parameter to differentiate between satisfactory and failing connectors. This research has developed a technique which does not rely on the 50Hz current and a prototype connector tester has been developed. In this system a high frequency signal is injected into the section of line under test and measures the resistive voltage drop and the current at the test frequency to yield the resistance in micro-ohms. From the value of resistance a decision as to whether a connector is satisfactory or approaching failure can be made. Determining the resistive voltage drop in the presence of a large induced voltage was achieved by the innovative approach of using a representative sample of the magnetic flux producing the induced voltage as the phase angle reference for the signal processing rather than the phase angle of the current, which can be affected by the presence of nearby metal objects. Laboratory evaluation of the connector tester has validated the measurement technique. The magnitude of the load current (50Hz) has minimal effect on the measurement accuracy. Addition of a suitable battery based power supply system and isolated communications, probably radio and refinement of the printed circuit board design and software are the remaining development steps to a production instrument.

Being able to test these devices in order to validate and dynamically improve on the design is crucial. This paper describes a low-cost FPGA tester that can test SRAM based FPGAs in the laboratory.

In order to find a link between results obtained from a laboratory erosion tester and tests carried out on a pneumatic conveyor, a comparison has been made between weight loss from bends on an industrial-scale pneumatic conveyor and erosion rates obtained in a small centrifugal erosion tester, for the same materials. Identical test conditions have been applied to both experiments so that comparable test results have been obtained. The erosion rate of mild steel commonly used as the wall material of conveyor pipes and pipe bends was determined individually on both test rigs. A relationship between weight loss from the bends and erosion rate determined from the tester has been developed. A discussion based on the results and their applicability to the prediction of wear in pneumatic conveyors concludes the paper. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A moving-coil designed micro-mechanics tester, named as MicroUTM (universal testing machine), is in-house developed in this paper for micro-mechanics tests. The main component is a moving coil suspended in a uniform magnetic field through a set of springs. When a current passes through the coil, the electromagnetic force is proportional to the magnitude of the current, so the load can easily be measured by the current. The displacement is measured using a capacitive sensor. The load is calibrated using a Sartorius BP211D analytical balance, with a resolution/range of 0.01 mg/80 g or 0.1 mg/210 g. The displacement is calibrated using a HEIDENHAIN CT-6002 length gauge with an accuracy of +/- 0.1 mu m. The calibration results show that the load range is +/- 1 N and the displacement range is +/- 300 mu m. The noise levels of the load and displacement are 50 mu N and 150 nm, respectively. The nonlinearity of the load is only 0.2%. Several in-plane load tests of the MEMS micro-cantilever are performed using this tester. Experimental results, with excellent repeatability, demonstrate the reliability of the load measurement as well as the flexible function of this tester.

Blue ray optical storage is one of the important trends in the area of information storage, and attracts a number of researchers. Static tester for blue ray optical storage plays an important role in storage media research. We designed and constructed a static tester, in which modularization makes it very convenient to expand function. Employment of modulation/demodulation technique weakens test error so as to increase test precision. Focus move mode and the nano-positioners facilitate the relocation of recording marks. Only one laser with wavelength 406.7 nm is used. In this paper, system design and characteristics are represented in detail, and some experimental results are also given to show that the static tester can perform successfully, acting as research platform for blue ray optical storage. Ao lado de uma forte influência cultural francesa verificada no Brasil Império, ao longo do século XIX, diversas fontes parecem indicar também uma forte presença francesa no domínio agrário, isto é, em projetos, ideias e até medidas concretas, relacionadas ao setor fundiário brasileiro, então marcado por um forte predomínio da grande propriedade rural e escravista, no quadro de uma agricultura voltada principalmente para a exportação. Nossa pesquisa, apoiando-se em documentos diversos (livros, diários, periódicos e relatórios ministeriais), procura apreender a presença de uma real influência francesa no discurso agrário formulado por políticos no Brasil da segunda metade do século XIX, em pleno contexto de gradual abolição da escravidão. Focalizamos desde personalidades famosas do liberalismo brasileiro, como André Rebouças, Tavares Bastos e Joaquim Nabuco, até membros da esfera administrativa imperial, especificamente do Ministério da Agricultura. O estudo aborda as referências intelectuais francesas dos personagens estudados, e examina alguns textos citados pelos brasileiros, no período compreendido entre 1860 e 1889. Com base em ampla consulta bibliográfica, junto à historiografia brasileira e à historiografia francesa, abordamos o contexto agrário dos dois países, desde fins do século XVIII até o final do século XIX e examinamos o impacto de medidas instituídas na França como o imposto territorial e da ação e pensamentos de homens como Mathieu de Dombasle, Michel Chevalier e Léonce Lavergne. Buscamos, assim, compreender em que medida a França teria contribuído para a disseminação de um discurso voltado para a modernização da agricultura brasileira, no contexto de transição do trabalho escravo para o trabalho livre no Brasil imperial, e para a formação de um ideário favorável ao estímulo à pequena propriedade fundiária.

A laboratory scale desktop test system including a cryogenic system, an AC pulse generation system and a real time data acquisition program in LabView/DAQmx, has been developed to evaluate the quench properties of MgB 2 wires as an element in a superconducting fault current limiter under pulse overcurrents at 25K in self-field conditions. The MgB2 samples started from a superconducting state and demonstrated good current limiting properties characterized by a fast transition to the normal state during the first half of the cycle and a continuously limiting effect in the subsequent cycles without burnouts. The experimental and numerical simulation results on the quench behaviour indicate the feasibility of using MgB 2 for future superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) applications. © IOP Publishing Ltd.

The overall objective of this work is to develop a computational model of particle degradation during dilute-phasepneumatic conveying. A key feature of such a model is the prediction of particle breakage due to particle–wall collisions in pipeline bends. This paper presents a method for calculating particle impact degradation propensity under a range of particle velocities and particle sizes. It is based on interpolation on impact data obtained in a new laboratory-scale degradation tester. The method is tested and validated against experimental results for degradation at 90± impact angle of a full-size distribution sample of granulated sugar. In a subsequent work, the calculation of degradation propensity is coupled with a ow model of the solids and gas phases in the pipeline.
