The formative platform of the Congress of Panama (1810-1826): the Pan-American conjecture revisited

This article examines the formative platform of the Congress of Panama of 1826. It seeks to support the hypothesis that the nature and scope of the first test of integration in the Western Hemisphere depended critically on the platform created by Simón Bolívar and other Latin American Independence heroes from the Declaration of Independence of Venezuela in 1810 until the last bilateral agreement of 1826. In that respect, it corroborates the Latin American Identity of the initiative.

Aceitação de práticas não-convencionais em saúde por estudantes de medicina da Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina

Este trabalho avaliou o conhecimento e aceitação das Práticas Não-Convencionais em Saúde (PNCS) por estudantes do curso de Medicina da Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina (Unisul). A pesquisa realizada foi do tipo descritiva de campo, aplicada na forma direta extensiva por meio de questionários. As perguntas avaliaram o conhecimento e o interesse a respeito de PNCS. Os entrevistados (n = 197) afirmaram conhecer a maioria das PNCS apresentadas no estudo, destacando-se ioga (96,6%), homeopatia (92,9%), chás caseiros (91,9%), acupuntura e orações (88,8%), além de benzedeiras (83,2%), com porcentagem superior a 80%. Ainda que estas práticas não façam parte do currículo atual deste curso, mais de 50% dos alunos afirmaram ter interesse em aprender sobre 10 das 13 PNCS apresentadas neste estudo. Para PNCS como ioga, acupuntura, fitoterapia e orações, mais de 50% dos alunos afirmaram que indicariam ou apoiariam o uso delas por seus pacientes. Concluiu-se que há interesse dos acadêmicos em práticas não-convencionais, bem como evidências da necessidade de inclusão de disciplinas curriculares que abordem as PNCS nos cursos de graduação em Medicina.

Learning a procedural task: effectiveness of multimedia presentations

Three experiments investigated the effectiveness of presenting procedural information through different media and their combinations. Experiment 1 examined the effectiveness of text, line drawings, text and line drawings, video. and video stills for learning a first aid task. The results showed an advantage of text and line drawings and of the video presentation over the other three conditions for both bandaging performance and answering questions about the task. Experiment 2 showed that the beneficial effect of the combination of text and pictures could not be accounted for simply in terms of a dual coding explanation. Rather, the effectiveness of the media and their combinations was influenced by the extent to which they conveyed action information. Finally, Experiment 3 showed no evidence of a contiguity effect: text and pictures were as effective when presented together on the same screen as when they were presented separately.
