Reproductive biology of the ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus bocourti (A. Milne-Edwards, 1870) (Decapoda: Axiidea: Callianassidae): A tropical species with a seasonal reproduction

Based on the hypothesis that reproduction is a continuous process in tropical habitats, we analysed reproductive periodicity and egg production in the callianassid ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus bocourti, one of the most common species in mangrove systems along the Pacific coast of Central America. During one year (May 2008 to April 2009), individuals of L. bocourti (N = 499) were collected nearshore Gulf of Nicoya, Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Observations were made on presence or absence of incubated embryos, and gonad activity of females was analysed as gonadosomatic index (GSI). Our results revealed that L. bocourti has a marked seasonal breeding period, which contradicts previous reports regarding coastal marine decapods from the tropics. Ovigerous females were found only from June to August, while high GSI values were obtained from March to July. The increase of GSI and appearance of ovigerous females were associated with a concomitant decrease of salinity, but not with temperature. We assume that reproduction of L. bocourti is adapted to local changes of environmental conditions, and that a decrease in salinity during rainy season may serve as a triggering factor for ovarian development. Compared to other ghost shrimps, L. bocourti produced on average more (2002 +/- 1365) and smaller (0.87 +/- 0.109 mm) eggs, which seems to suggest that this species does not have an abbreviated larval development as reported for other species of genus. The deviation from the generalization of constant reproduction in the tropics for shallow water marine invertebrates and its probable cause are adequately discussed.

Novel schmitt trigger based on lahbda diode

A new circuit to realise a Schmitt trigger has been conceived. This circuit, which is based on the well known lambda diode, is suitable for integration using CMOS technology. It requires only three devices and is probably simpler than any other conventional Schmitt trigger circuit.

Reproductive Biology and Spawning Periodicity of Endeavour Shrimps Metapenaeus endeavouri (Schmitt, 1926) and Metapenaeus ensis (de Haan, 1850) from a Central Queensland (Australia) Fishery

Metapenaeus endeavouri and M. ensis from coastal trawl fishing grounds off central Queensland, Australia, have marked seasonal reproductive cycles. Female M. endeavouri grew to a larger size than female M. ensis and occurred over a wider range of sites and depths. Although M. ensis was geographically restricted in distribution to only the shallowest sites it was highly abundant. Mating activity in these open thelycum species, indicated by the presence or absence of a spermatophore, was relatively low and highly seasonal compared with closed thelyeum shrimps. Seasonal variation in spermatophore insemination can be used as an independent technique to study spawning periodicity in open thelycum shrimps. Data strongly suggest an inshore movement of M. endeavouri to mature and spawn. This differs from most concepts of Penaeus species life cycles, but is consistent with the estuarine significance in the life cycle of Metapenaeus species. Monthly population fecundity indices suggest summer spawning for both species, which contrasts with the winter spawning of other shrimps from the same multispecies fishery.

Novel CMOS Schmitt trigger

A novel CMOS Schmitt trigger using only four MOS transistors is discussed. This circuit, which works on the principle of load-coupled regenerative feedback, can be implemented using conventional CMOS technology with only one extra fabrication step. It can be implemented even more easily in CMOS/SOS (silicon-on-sapphire) integrated circuits. The hysteresis of this Schmitt trigger can be controlled by a proper choice of the transistor geometries.

A ternary Schmitt trigger

A new ternary circuit, namely, a ternary Schmitt trigger, is presented. This novel circuit which is based on the well-known lambda diode, is suitable for integration using CMOS technology. The circuit has been simulated using the SPICE 2G Program. The results of the simulation are presented. The circuit offers a high degree of design flexibility. This circuit is expected to be a very useful functional block in the processing of ternary and pseudoternary signals.

Research note A novel BIMOS Schmitt trigger

A new Schmitt trigger circuit based on the lambda bipolar transistor is presented. This circuit which exhibits a hysteresis in its transfer characteristic seems to use a smaller chip area than many of the circuits proposed so far.

Una aproximación al concepto de “razón de estado” en Giovanni Botero desde la teoría política de Carl Schmitt

Resumen: El trabajo se propone analizar la conceptualización del término “razón de Estado” en el teólogo piamontés Giovanni Botero a la luz de las teorías políticas de Carl Schmitt. En especial se hará hincapié en la aparición dentro del pensamiento de Botero de conceptos que luego Schmitt caracterizará como esenciales en la conformación del Estado Moderno, entre los cuales están el de soberanía, la idea del enemigo político, y la conformación de un orden frente a la existencia de un estado de excepción. Principalmente se busca usar estos conceptos schmittianos como marco teórico para entender cómo Botero intentó definir el concepto de “razón de Estado” frente a las problemáticas políticas, sociales y religiosas que se producían a fines del siglo XVI.

FIRST RECORD OF THE GEBIIDEAN GENUS AXIANASSA SCHMITT, 1924 (CRUSTACEA: DECAPODA: GEBIIDEA: AXIANASSIDAE) IN THE WEST PACIFIC, WITH DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SPECIES FROM THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

A new species, Axianassa sinica, from the Beibu Gulf (Gulf of Tonkin), northern South China Sea, is described and illustrated. The new species is readily distinguished from A. australis Rodrigues & Shimizu, 1992, by its acute rostrum, merus of pereopod 1 with a tooth distally on lower margin and an elongated telson.

Carl Schmitt et la critique de l’universalisme libéral

Ce mémoire porte sur la pensée politique du juriste allemand Carl Schmitt, plus précisément sur sa critique de l’universalisme libéral. Sur la base d’une analyse de ses principaux textes, nous démontrons que la pertinence de cet auteur controversé réside dans le défi renouvelé que présente son antinormativisme pour la pensée politique contemporaine. Nous soutenons qu’il y a chez Schmitt un souci constant de rattacher le droit à l’ordre concret, qu’il soit institué ou reçu. Nous démontrons ensuite comment l’antinormativisme se prolonge en droit international dans la critique de l’universalisme, entendu comme l’ambition de penser le politique à partir de l’humanité comme sujet unique. D’une perspective décisionniste, l’universalisme masque des intérêts impérialistes qu’il convient de dénoncer ; d’une perspective institutionnaliste, l’universalisme néglige l’ordre spatial concret sur lequel repose le droit international. Nous affirmons que Schmitt démontre l’importance de préserver l’autonomie de la science juridique envers la morale et la technique.
