A new interview procedure is proposed for collecting valid information on the acquisition of high-level performance in sport. The procedure elicits verifiable information on the development of athletes' achievements in their primary sport, as well as factors that might influence performance, including involvement in other sporting activities, injuries, physical growth and quality of training resources. Interviewed athletes also describe their engagement in specific training and other relevant activities during each year of their development as well as how they experienced each type of activity. The collected information is then examined to identify those aspects of the athletes' recall of their development that meet criteria of reliability and validity. Recommendations to coaches and scientists are discussed for how retrospective interviews can uncover aspects of development that distinguish elite from less accomplished athletes.

What are new interview methods and practices in our new 'interview society' and how do they relate to traditional social science research? This volume interrogates the interview as understood, used - and under-used - by anthropologists. It puts the interview itself in the hotseat by exploring the nature of the interview, interview techniques, and illustrative cases of interview use.

What is a successful and representative interview? How are interviews best transcribed and integrated into our writing? Is interview knowledge production safe, ethical and representative? And how are interviews used by anthropologists in their ethnographic practice?

This important volume leads the reader from an initial scrutiny of the interview to interview techniques and illustrative case studies. It is experimental, innovative, and covers in detail matters such as awkwardness, silence and censorship in interviews that do not feature in general interview textbooks. The police interview is one of the most important investigative tools that law enforcement has close at hand, and police interview methods have changed during the twentieth century. A good police interview is conducted in the frame of the law, is governed by the interview goal, and is influenced by facilitating factors that may affect the elicited report. The present doctoral dissertation focuses on police interviews in cases of very serious crimes of violence and sexual offences. Results reveal crime victims’ and perpetrators’ experiences of being interviewed and police officers’ attitudes towards conducting interviews related to traumatizing crimes. Study 1 revealed that when police officers interviewed murderers and sexual offenders, the interviewees perceived attitudes characterized by either dominance or humanity. Police interviews marked by dominance and suspects’ responses of anxiety were mainly associated with a higher proportion of denials, whereas an approach marked by humanity, and responses of being respected were significantly associated with admissions. In line with Study 1, the victims of rape and aggravated assault in Study 2 also revealed the experience of two police interview styles, where an interviewing style marked by dominance and responses of anxiety was significantly associated with crime victims’ omissions of information. Moreover, a humanitarian interviewing style, and crime victims’ feelings of being respected and co-operative, was significantly related to crime victims providing all information from painful events. Special squad police officers’ attitudes towards interviewing crime victims, in Study 3, also showed a humanitarian approach and two dominant approaches, one affective and the other refusing. The attitude towards interviewing suspects of crimes in focus revealed humanitarian and dominant interviewing attitudes, and an approach marked by kindness. The present thesis shows that, during their entire career, an overwhelming majority of the special squad police officers have experienced stressful events during patrol as well as investigative duty. Results show that symptoms from stressful event exposures and coping mechanisms are associated with negative attitudes towards interviewing suspects and supportive attitudes towards crime victim interviews. Thus, experiences from stressful exposures may automatically activate ego-defensive functions that automatically generate dominant attitudes. Moreover, it is important to offer police officers who have been exposed to stressful events the opportunity to work through their experiences, for example, through debriefing procedures. After debriefings, police officers are better prepared to meet crime victims and suspects and, through conscious closed-loop processes, to conduct police interviews without awaking ego-defensive functions.

Kindergartens in China offer structured full-day programs for children aged 3-6. Although formal schooling does not commence until age 7, the mathematics program in kindergartens is specifically focused on developing young children’s facility with simple addition and subtraction. This study explored young Chinese children’s strategies for solving basic addition facts as well as their intuitive understanding of addition via interview methods. Results indicate a strong impact that teacher-directed teaching methods have on young children’s cognitions in relation to addition.

BACKGROUND: Western studies have suggested that emotional stress and distress impacted on the morbidity and mortality in people following acute coronary events. Symptoms of anxiety and depression have been associated with re-infarction and death, prolonged recovery and disability and depression may precipitate the client's low self-esteem. This study examined perceived anxiety, depression and self-esteem of Hong Kong Chinese clients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) over a 6-month period following hospital admission. OBJECTIVES: To examine: DESIGN: A prospective, repeated measures design with measures taken on two occasions over a 6-month period; (1) within the 1st week of hospital admission following the onset of ACS and (2) at 6 months follow up. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Convenient sample of 182 voluntary consented clients admitted with ACS to a major public hospital in Hong Kong who could communicate in Chinese, complete questionnaires, cognitive intact, and were haemodynamically stable and free from acute chest pain at the time of interview. METHODS: Baseline data were obtained within 1 week after hospital admission. The follow-up data was collected 6 months after hospital discharge. The Chinese version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), State Self-esteem Scale (SSES), and Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were used to assess anxiety and depression, state self-esteem, and trait self-esteem, respectively. RESULTS: Findings suggested gender differences in clients' perception in anxiety, depression and self-esteem. Improvements in clients' perception of these variables were evident over the 6-month period following their acute coronary events. CONCLUSION: The study confirmed the western notion that psychosocial problems are common among coronary clients and this also applies to Hong Kong Chinese diagnosed with ACS. Further studies to explore effective interventions to address these psychosocial issues are recommended.

This thesis used survey and interview methods to examine how organisational and interpersonal factors impact on the mental health of fire and rescue workers. It was the first published research to assess and predict multiple indicators of mental health; psychological distress, well-being, posttraumatic growth and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. The results provide valuable information for supporting fire and rescue workers through psychoeducation and proactive intervention programs.

When settling, people often use cultural schema from their original homeland to build familiarity in unfamiliar surrounds. This paper draws on ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the first author in Brisbane, with the Karen community from Burma, during which participant observation and interview methods were used. We present an ethnographic account of the Brisbane Karen wrist-tying ceremony. The ceremony acts as an insight into the challenges for Karen whilst settling into Australia. It reflects multiple accounts of history and tradition, but simultaneously speaks to emerging, contemporary Karen contexts. This research contributes to richer understandings of settlement: it frames transnational cultural practice as a flexible mode of integration, rather than an exclusionary mode of othering. We propose that the integrative discourse of the ceremony creates familiarity and social connection in local and diasporic spaces. This acts as a counter to the challenges of Karen settlement including the negotiations of local/global identity politics.

This study is part of the joint project "The Genetic Epidemiology and Molecular Genetics of schizophrenia in Finland" between the Departments of Mental Health and Alcohol Research, and Molecular Medicine at the National Public Health Institute. In the study, we utilized three nationwide health care registers: 1) the Hospital Discharge Register, 2) the Free Medication Register, and 3) the Disability Pension Register, plus the National Population Register, in order to identify all patients with schizophrenia born from 1940 to 1976 (N=33,731) in Finland, and their first degree-relatives. 658 patients with at least one parent born in a homogeneous isolate in northeastern Finland were identified, as well as 4904 familial schizophrenia patients with at least two affected siblings from the whole country. The comparison group was derived from the Health 2000 Study. We collected case records and reassessed the register diagnosis. Were contacted the isolate patients and a random sample of patients from the whole country to make diagnostic clinical interviews and to assess the negative and positive symptoms and signs of schizophrenia. In addition to these patients, we interviewed siblings who were initially healthy according to the Hospital Discharge Register. Of those with a register diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective or schizophreniform disorder, 69% received a record-based consensus diagnosis and 63% an interview-based diagnosis of schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia having first-degree relatives with psychotic disorder had more severe affective flattening and alogia than those who were the only affected individuals in their family. The novel findings were: 1) The prevalence of schizophrenia in the isolate was relatively high based on register (1.5%), case record (0.9-1.3%), and interview (0.7-1.2%) data. 2) Isolate patients, regardless of their familial loading for schizophrenia, had less delusions and hallucinations than the whole country familial patients, which may be related to the genetic homogeneity in the isolate. This phenotype encourages the use of endophenotypes in genetic analyses instead of diagnoses alone. 3) The absence of register diagnosis does not confirm that siblings are healthy, because 7.7% of siblings had psychotic symptoms already before the register diagnoses were identified in 1991. For genetic research, the register diagnosis should therefore be reassessed using either a structured interview or a best- estimate case note consensus diagnosis. Structured clinical interview methods need be considered also in clinical practice.

This study analyzes the forming of the occupational identity of the well-educated fixed-term employees. Fixed-term employment contracts amongst the well-educated labour force are exceptionally common in Finland as compared to other European countries. Two groups of modern fixed-term employees are distinguished. The first comprises well-educated women employed in the public sector whose fixed-term employment often consists of successive periods as temporary substitutes. The other group comprises well-educated, upper white-collar men aged over 40, whose fixed-term employment careers often consist of jobs of project nature or posts that are filled for a fixed period only. Method of the study For the empirical data I interviewed 35 persons (26 women and 9 men) in 33 interviews, one of which was conducted by e-mail and one was a group interview. All the interviews were electronically recorded and coded. All the interviewees have two things in common: fixed-term employment and formal high education. Thirteen (13) of them are researchers, four nurses, four midwives, four journalists, and ten project experts. I used the snowball method to get in touch the interviewees. The first interviewees were those who were recommended by the trade unions and by my personal acquaintances. These interviewees, in turn, recommended other potential interviewees. In addition, announcements on the internet pages of the trade unions were used to reach other interviewees. In analysing process I read the research material several times to find the turning points in the narrative the interviewees told. I also searched for the most meaningful stories told and the meaning the interviewees gave to these stories and to the whole narrative. In addition to that I paid attention to co-production of the narrative with the interviewees and analyzed the narrative as performance to be able to search for the preferred identities the interviewees perform. (Riesman 2001, 698-701). I do not pay much attention to the question of truth of a narrative in the sense of its correspondence with facts; rather I think a working life narrative has two tasks: On the one hand one has to tell the facts and on the other hand, he/she has to describe the meaning of these facts to herself/himself. To emphasize the double nature of the narrative about one’s working life I analyzed the empirical data both by categorizing it according to the cultural models of storytelling (heroic story, comedy, irony and tragedy) and by studying the themes most of the interviewees talked about. Ethics of the study I chose to use narrative within qualitative interviews on the grounds that in my opinion is more ethical and more empowering than the more traditional structured interview methods. During the research process I carefully followed the ethical rules of a qualitative research. The purpose of the interviews and the research was told to the interviewees by giving them a written description of the study. Oral permission to use the interview in this research was obtained from the interviewees. The names and places, which are mentioned in the study, are changed to conceal the actual identity of the interviewees. I shared the analysis with the interviewees by sending each of them the first analysis of their personal interview. This way I asked them to make sure that the identity was hidden well enough and hoped to give interviewees a chance to look at their narratives, to instigate new actions and sustain the present one (Smith 2001, 721). Also I hoped to enjoy a new possibility of joint authorship. Main results As a result of the study I introduce six models of telling a story. The four typical western cultural models that guide the telling are: heroic story, comedy, tragedy and satirical story (Hänninen 1999). In addition to these models I found two ways of telling a career filled with fixed-term employments that differ significantly from traditional career story telling. However, the story models in which the interviewees pour their experience locates the fixed term employers work career in an imagined life trajectory and reveals the meaning they give to it. I analyze the many sided heroic story that Liisa tells as an example of the strength of the fear of failing or losing the job the fixed term employee feels. By this structure it is also possible to show that success is felt to be entirely a matter of chance. Tragedy, the failure in one’s trial to get something, is a model I introduce with the help of Vilppu’s story. This narrative gets its meaning both from the sorrow of the failure in the past and the rise of something new the teller has found. Aino tells her story as a comedy. By introducing her narrative, I suggest that the purpose of the comedy, a stronger social consensus, gets deeper and darker shade by fixed-term employment: one who works as a fixed term employee has to take his/her place in his/her work community by him/herself without the support the community gives to those in permanent position. By studying the satiric model Rauno uses, I argue that using irony both turns the power structures to a carnival and builds free space to the teller of the story and to the listener. Irony also helps in building a consensus, mutual understanding, between the teller and the listener and it shows the distance the teller tells to exist between him and others. Irony, however, demands some kind of success in one’s occupational career but also at least a minor disappointment in the progress of it. Helmi tells her story merely as a detective story. By introducing Helmi’s narrative, I argue that this story model strengthens the trust in fairness of the society the teller and the listener share. The analysis also emphasizes the central position of identity work, which is caused by fixed-term employment. Most of the interviewees talked about getting along in working life. I introduced Sari’s narrative as an example of this. In both of these latter narratives one’s personal character and habits are lifted as permanent parts of the actual professional expertise, which in turn varies according to different situations. By introducing these models, I reveal that the fixed-term employees have different strategies to cope with their job situations and these strategies vary according to their personal motives and situations and the actual purpose of the interview. However, I argue that they feel the space between their hopes and fears narrow and unsecure. In the research report I also introduce pieces of the stories – themes – that the interviewees use to build these survival strategies. They use their personal curriculum vitae or portfolio, their position in work community and their work morals to build their professional identity. Professional identity is flexible and varies in time and place, but even then it offers a tool to fix one’s identity work into something. It offers a viewpoint to society and a tool to measure one’s position in surrounding social nets. As one result of the study I analyze the position the fixed-term employees share on the edge of their job communities. I summarize the hopes and fears the interviewees have concerning employers, trade unions, educational institutions and the whole society. In their opinion, the solidarity between people has been weakened by the short-sighted power of the economy. The impact the fixed-term employment has on one’s professional identity and social capital is a many-sided and versatile process. Fixed-term employment both strengthens and weakens the professional identity, social capital and the building of trust. Fixed-term employment also affects one’s day-to-day life by excluding her/him from the norm and by one’s difficulty in making long-term plans (Jokinen 2005). Regardless of the nature of the job contract, the workers themselves are experts in making the best of their sometimes less than satisfying work life and they also build their professional identity by using creatively their education, work experiences and interpersonal relations. However, a long career of short fixed-term employments may seriously change the perception of employee about his/her role. He/she may start concentrating only in coping in his/her unsatisfactory situation and leaves the active improvement of the lousy working conditions to other people. This research objective was to investigate the working motivation in a large state-owned enterprise, Luoyang White Horse Company Group in Henan Province. Some standard methods, such as in-depth interview, questionnaire were employed. This research is divided into two parts: 1. The first is to investigate the factor structure of working motivation, by the way of survey questionnaire. 2. The second is to do a case study to the White Horse Company, by using survey questionnaire and interview methods. The results shows that: 1. Eight factors are extracted by the Exploring Factor Analysis. These factors include: material reward factor, leader factor, fairness factor, goal factor, mental reward factor, development factor, job factor, participation factor. The overall explanation is 56.0%. 2. By the One-Way ANOVA and Multiple Comparison, it is found that: working age, age, sex, education background, income and assignment all have a notable effect on some of the eight factors. 3. By the case study to the White Horse Company, it is found that there still is no a perfect motivating mechanism in the White Horse Company and the disproportion of reward and punishment has a disadvantageous effect on the worker's productivity.

The aim of this study was to investigate the subjective experience of acquired deafness using quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (interview) methods. This paper presents findings from the questionnaire data. Eighty-seven people (of whom 38 had acquired a profound loss) participated in the study. The questionnaire contained items designed to examine both audiological and non-audiological aspects of deafened people's experiences. It also sought to measure the extent to which those aspects affect their quality of life. The questionnaire included three variables (i.e. reported frequency and impact of depression, and overall effect of deafness on one's life) as broad indicators of adjustment. Seventy-three respondents (including all but one of the profound group) completed the questionnaire. Factor analysis of the questionnaire data identified six major themes (with variance >10%) underlying the personal experience of acquired deafness. Three themes-communicative deprivation, restriction, and malinteraction by hearing people-dealt with observable aspects of respondents' experience. Multiple regression found that these factor themes associated with biomedical variables. The remaining three themes dealt with less tangible aspects of the deafness experience. These themes-feelings of distress in interaction, feelings of abandonment and benefit from positive experiences-did not associate with biomedical variables. Finally, multiple regression indicates that respondents' factor scores predict the impact of deafness at least as strongly as their audiological and social characteristics.

Drawing on data generated via large-scale survey and in-depth interview methods, this article reports findings which show that being a student teacher in early-twenty-first-century England is a demanding personal experience which requires considerable engagement and commitment in the face of built-in challenges and risks, and which engenders, for many, highly charged affective responses. Student teachers are centrally concerned during this time with their (changing) identities, their relationships with others and the relevance of course provision. Findings also indicate that, in some respects, student teachers’ accounts of their experiences are systematically differentiated according to a number of factors, notably the initial teacher preparation route being followed, their age, and their prior conceptions and expectations of teaching and of learning to teach. These findings are situated in the broader literature on teacher development and some implications for teacher educators are discussed. © 2008 Taylor & Francis

Erfolgskontrollen für Agrarumweltprogramme bezogen sich bisher meistens auf einzelne Flächen oder auf programmbezogene, großräumige Evaluationen. Es wurde jedoch kaum untersucht, wie sich die Maßnahmen auf die Entwicklung einzelner Naturräume auswirken. Auch gab es keine Studien, welche die Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Beweggründen der Landnutzer auf der ei-nen- sowie Landnutzung und Vegetation auf der anderen Seite interpretierten. Die Dissertation Wirkungen von Extensivierungs- und Vertragsnaturschutzprogrammen auf die Entwick-lung einer »gerade noch aktuellen Agrarlandschaft« hat diese Lücke geschlossen. Sie erklärt, welche Bedeutung die hessischen Programme HELP und HEKUL für den hohen Anteil naturschutzfachlich wertvollen Grünlands im Rommeroder Hügel-land westlich des Meißner haben. Untersuchungsgegenstand waren die Grünlandvegetation und die landwirtschaftlichen Betriebe mit ihren Menschen und deren Beweggründen. Diese Inhalte er-forderten eine Vorgehensweise, die sowohl sozialwissenschaftliche als auch naturwissenschaftliche Methoden einbindet, um Bezüge zwischen Betrieben und Grünlandvegetation zu er-kennen. Umfangreiche pflanzensoziologische Untersuchungen und Interviews der Betriebsleiter waren Grundlage für eine Schlagdatenbank und weitergehende Auswertungen. Die Interpretation vegetationskundlicher Erhebungen im Kontext betrieblicher Entscheidungen und Beweggründe erforderte es, althergebrachte Ansätze in neuer Form zu verknüpfen. Die Bewertung der Programmwirkungen stützte sich auf die Schlagdatenbank und auf vier Szena-rien zur zukünftigen Gebietsentwicklung bei unterschiedlichen Programmfortschreibungen. Zur Darstellung von Erhebungen und Ergebnissen entstand eine Vielzahl thematischer Karten. Der überdurchschnittlich hohe Anteil naturschutzfachlich bedeutsamer Grünlandtypen auf den Programmflächen und die Interpretation der Szenarien belegten eine hohe Wirksamkeit von HELP und HEKUL im Gebiet. Nicht nur auf den Vertragsnaturschutzflächen des HELP, sondern auch auf dem HEKUL-Grünland sind naturschutzfachlich bedeutende Vegetationstypen überproportional vertreten. Die vier Szenarien ließen erkennen, dass eine Beschränkung des HELP auf Schutzgebiete, eine Abschaffung der HEKUL-Grünlandextensivierung oder gar eine ersatzlose Strei-chung beider Programme zu erheblichen Verschlechterungen der naturschutzfachlichen Situation führen würde. Gleichzeitig war festzustellen, dass es ohne die landwirtschaftlich schwierigen natur-räumlichen Verhältnisse sowie eine eher großteilige Agrarstruktur mit überdurchschnittlich flächen-starken und wirtschaftlich stabilen Vollerwerbsbetrieben keine so deutlichen Programmwirkungen gegeben hätte. Auch die Tatsache, dass viele Landwirte eine intensive Landwirtschaft aus innerer Überzeugung ablehnen und mit einer erheblich geringeren Stickstoffintensität wirtschaften als es HEKUL verlangt, wirkte verstärkend. Die große Bedeutung individueller Beweggründe einzelner Betriebsleiter wurde auch in den engen Beziehungen einzelner Grünland-Pflanzengesellschaften zu bestimmten Betriebstypen und sogar einzelnen Höfen sichtbar, deren Beschreibung und Interpretation wichtige Erkenntnisse zu den so-zioökonomischen Voraussetzungen verschiedener Vegetationstypen lieferte. Für die zukünftige Entwicklung der hessischen Agrarumweltförderung empfiehlt die Dissertation eine Einführung und bevorzugte Anwendung ergebnisorientierter Honorierungsverfahren, eine bessere Berücksichtigung des gering gedüngten Grünlands über eine differenzierte Förderung sehr extensiver Düngeregime, eine stärkere Modularisierung des Gesamtprogramms und eine Durchführung aller Maßnahmen im Vertragsverfahren. Die betriebszweigbezogene Grünlandextensivierung sollte zukünftig in Kulissen angeboten werden, in denen ein verstärktes Wechseln von Betrieben in die Mindestpflege nach DirektZahlVerpflV zu erwarten ist.

The aim of this academic essay is to research into Distance teaching in language education at a comprehensive upper high school in a region in Sweden. Qualitative and quantitative studies are combined by using evaluation and interview methods with students who have completed their studies and with those who have decided to terminate them 2012/2013. The goals are to identify success factors and elements in devising and compiling on-line language courses thus eliminating failure by students unable / choosing not to complete courses. Present Distance teaching is mostly applicable for the already motivated students and research shows that measures can be taken to increase the percentage of successful and satisfied students.

The overall aim of this study is to analyse history teachers’ understanding of the school subject history. The aim have also been to uncover what factors the history teachers say have affected their understanding of the school subject. Based on survey and interview methods, the question that this study deals with is: in the light of which general understanding of the school subject history, do the teachers make didactic choices on a daily basis? The first theme is biographical. The teachers’ life-history is taken into consideration and several factors in the teachers’ background and the school environment have been identified. It also seems as if the teachers’ understanding of the school subject goes from an elementary and searching approach to one that is more complex and convinced. The second theme is a more structural approach. The results shows three major orientations among the teachers’ general understanding namely, educational (bildung) orientation, critical orientation and identity orientation. Even though a main orientation can be seen among the teachers, an important result is also that the orientation is overall complex. At the most general level some patterns can be seen. First the connection between the teachers’ biography and their general understanding of the school subject. In the understanding of the school subject, it is also notable that teachers relate in different ways to history as science, history as identity and history from an ideological viewpoint. It is also possible to note some signs of change in the school subject history that follows a lager historiographical context.
