‘Team teaching’ across disciplines at Australian universities is rare. Academics are rigorous in developing specific disciplinary expertise that often prevents collaboration outside of their disciplinary area. In pre-service primary education courses, academics often teach in traditional and exclusive disciplinary approaches. This separation is at odds however with the impetus for a pedagogical move forward towards an interdisciplinary approach in primary schools. The authors contend that primary
teacher educators must model effective interdisciplinary practice to their student teachers and unpack the processes of how to make meaningful connections together. This paper presents the work of two teacher educators who are involved in a broader, innovative, team teaching, field based collaboration with schools and non-school settings for the Bachelor of Teaching (Postgraduate) at Deakin University. In this paper, the authors firstly discuss their rationale for adopting a team teaching approach and describe how they are working towards an interdisciplinary model, bringing together the two areas; music and literacy and providing examples from their team teaching experience. The paper concludes with reflections and recommendations for future team teaching at the tertiary level.

The world’s increasing complexity, competitiveness, interconnectivity, and dependence on technology generate new challenges for nations and individuals that cannot be met by continuing education as usual. With the proliferation of complex systems have come new technologies for communication, collaboration, and conceptualisation. These technologies have led to signifi cant changes in the forms of mathematical and scientifi c thinking required beyond the classroom. Modelling, in its various forms, can develop and broaden students’ mathematical and scientific thinking beyond the standard curriculum. This chapter first considers future competencies in the mathematical sciences within an increasingly complex world. Consideration is then given to interdisciplinary problem solving and models and modelling, as one means of addressing these competencies. Illustrative case studies involving complex, interdisciplinary modelling activities in Years 1 and 7 are presented.

This study \Alas initiated in response to the Junior Division Review (1985) publ ished by the Ministry of Education for the Province of Ontario. Curriculum integration is an element used within the educational paradigm designed by the Ontario Ministry of Education. It is a term frequent1y verbal ized b>' educators in this province, but because of 1 imi ted resource support regarding this methodology, it was open to broad interpretation resulting in an extreme v ar i at i on i nit simp 1 eme n tat i on • I n de ed, the Min i s try intimated that it was not occurring to any significant degree across the province. The objective of this thes is was· to define integration in the junior classroom and de-:.ign a meas.ur·ement in-:.tr-ument which would in turn high 1 i gh t indicators of curriculum integration. The :.tudy made a prel iminary, field-based survey of educa tiona 1 professionals in order to generate a relevant description of integrated curr-iculum programm i ng as def i ned in the j un i or classroom. The description was a compilation of views expressed by a random selection of teachers, consultants, supervisory officers and principals. The survey revea 1 ed a much more comprehens i ve vi et·<,l of the attributes of integrated programming than tradition would dictate and resulted in a functional definition tha t was broader than past prac t ices. Based on the information generated by this survey, an instrument ou t 1 in i ng program cr iter i a of was devised. an integrated junior cla~·sroom Th i s measuremen t i nstrumen t , designed for all levels of educators, was named uThe Han~.son I nstrumen t for the Measuremen t of Program Integrat ion in the Jun i or Cl assroom". It refl ected five categories intrinsic to the me thodol ogy of integration: Teacher Behaviour, Student Behaviour, Classroom Layout, Cl as~·r oom Environment and Progr amm i ng. Each category and the items therein were successfully tested in val idi ty and rel iabi 1 i ty checKs. Interestingly, the individual class was found to be the major variable programming in in the measuremen t the j un i or d i vis i on • of The integrated instrument demonstrated potential not onl)' a~· an initial measure of the degree of integrated curriculum, but as a guide to strategies to implement such a methodology.

This research studioo the effect of integrated instruction in mathematics and~ science on student achievement in and attitude towards both mathematics and science. A group of grade 9 academic students received instruction in both science and mathematics in an integrated program specifically developed for the purposes of the research. This group was compared to a control group that had received science and mathematics instruction in a traditional, nonintegrated program. The findings showed that in all measures of attitude, there was no significant difference between the students who participated in the integrated science and mathematics program and those who participated in a traditional science and mathematics program. The findings also revealed that integration did improve achievement on some of the measures used. The performance on mathematics open-ended problem-solving tasks improved after participation in the integrated program, suggesting that the integrated students were better able to apply their understanding of mathematics in a real-life context. The performance on the final science exam was also improved for the integrated group. Improvement was not noted on the other measures, which included EQAO scores and laboratory practical tasks. These results raise the issue of the suitability of the instruments used to gauge both achievement and attitude. The accuracy and suitability of traditional measures of achievement are considered. It is argued that they should not necessarily be used as the measure of the value of integrated instruction in a science and mathematics classroom.

L’objectiu d’aquest projecte, a banda de plantejar un aprenentatge directament relacionat amb l’entorn de l’alumne, tracta d’aconseguir que les assignatures i les disciplines autònomes perdin parcialment el seu caràcter i passin a formar part d’una unitat més global (Mallart, 1998). Per aconseguir això, els alumnes han de transformar un programa de cuina de l’Arguiñano en un programa de radio, amb la peculiaritat que en el programa de radio cal explicar quin son els secrets científics que s‘amaguen quan l’Arguiñano està cuinant en el programa. Aquest secrets científics estaran relacionats amb les diferents disciplines dels membres la xarxa i s’aplicarà el mètode d’aprenentatge basat en projectes (APP).

La Xarxa d’Innovació Docent d’Avaluació està formada per un grup de vuit professores i professors de diferents estudis i departaments de la UdG. És una xarxa formada el curs 2009/10 i té com a objectiu fonamental implementar innovacions a l’avaluació de les assignatures dels membres per tal de millorar-les. Els objectius de la present comunicació es poden resumir en: - Presentar els canvis en els sistema d’avaluació de 3 assignatures de membres de la Xarxa i l’anàlisi dels resultats obtinguts. - Plantejar els principals impactes en la docència fruit de la participació a la Xarxa d’Innovació Docent d’Avaluació dels diferents membres. - Plantejar la proposta de treball de la XID d’Avaluació pel curs 2011-2012.

Reflexionamos sobre una experiencia que hemos puesto en marcha este curso en el grado de Educación Social de la E.U. de Magisterio de Bilbao (UPV/EHU) que es la AIM (Actividad Interdisciplinar de Módulo). La titulación tiene una estructura modular y cada módulo está asociado a unas competencias generales y específicas. Además, adopta una perspectiva interdisciplinar que hace confluir las distintas disciplinas en la realización de un trabajo en grupo llamado AIM, el cual requiere articular saberes teóricos y procedimentales relativos a las distintas materias que configuran el módulo con el objetivo de impulsar el aprendizaje interdisciplinar del alumnado.

For the reader of this book it is reserved a historical walk through the efforts realized in the field of education to settle the necessary basis for the formation of a participating citizen in the socio-technical process and the dialogic and communicative action with the technological world. There are ten articles that discuss about many aspects of the relationship between education and technology, experienced by the author, who at any moment forgot thinkers with whom he spoke as Jürgen Habermas, Karl Marx, Karl Popper, Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Ruy Gama. You can dream and run away from the instrumental knowledge to incorporate the woven continuous experience in the practice and experience with people. In this atmosphere of concepts, characteristics and perspectives is the technological education, which runs through dialogue with technology, possession of knowledge and interdisciplinary. Talking to the technology, the subject interacts with society so that the demands are part of projects in this field of this champ of knowledge and the other sciences. It also means to explore knowledge and practices of professionals and educators working in this field full of normative and formative values.

The Interdisciplinary practice opens in the context of Basic Education guiding new looks in the production of knowledge. It is necessary to reflect the interdisciplinarity as scientific and epistemological stance and its conditions of possibility of expanding the horizon before the theoretical and methodological challenges posed by modernity. Thus, this work aimed to analyze interdisciplinary concepts present in the proposal of the High School Program Innovator. Therefore, the theoretical route initially had the search for understanding of high school in Brazil, interdisciplinarity as the possibility of tensioning the production of scientific knowledge, mainly anchored in the studies of Acácia Kuenzer, Dermeval Saviani, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Claude Raynaut, Henrique Leff and Edgar Morin. The study was methodological subsidy document research and principles of content analysis. The analysis took place from the seven documents that make up the construction path of High School Program Innovator and a semi-structured interview. So, we sought to understand the concepts of the documents establishing analytical categories from more evoked content. In this process identified three categories with regard to the construction of the Program proposal: pedagogical innovations, curriculum organization and teaching quality and three categories with regard to interdisciplinary concepts present in the program: dialogue between curriculum components, joint knowledge and role of high school students. From the studies it was observed that the program came up with the prospect of directing a new identity for the final stage of basic education, listing Documents Guiding Plans and actions for a new curricular organization of secondary education. It was noted that the Program, though explicit in its guiding documents of the interdisciplinary perspective, in no time he calls himself as interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinary actions should run or from school understanding, as well as the preparation of the Redesign Project Curriculum encompassing dialogue between disciplines. Realized by the analysis of the guiding documents is a back program even for a technical rationality practiced by the particular understanding of the school and the practice being expressed from the same concepts that high school is developed, with each teacher teaching the contents of their disciplines and performing cross designs. The Australian Curriculum marks national reforms in social science education, first with the return to the disciplines of history and geography and second, through a new approach to interdisciplinary learning. This paper raises the question of whether the promise of interdisciplinary learning can be realised in the middle years of schooling if teachers have to teach history as a discipline rather than within an over-arching integrated curriculum framework. The paper explores the national blueprints and considers the national history curriculum in light of theories of teachers’ knowledge and middle school education. Evidence from teacher interviews indicates that historical understanding can be achieved through integrated frameworks to meet the goals of middle schooling.
