A 41-year-old woman who worked in a furniture plant was admitted to hospital for acute dyspnea that had developed a few hours she marked pieces of "Alcantara" material with a heated metallic blade. The chest x-ray showed a restrictive syndrome. The lymphocyte count was high in the bronchioalveolar lavage fluid with a CD4/CD8 ratio of 0.11, leading to the diagnosis of alveolitis. Investigations at the work place allowed identification and evaluation of the causal agent. Alcantara is a synthetic fabric composed of 70% polyurethane fibers, which when burned produces isocyanate monomers. After eliminating exposure and institution of corticosteroid therapy, the outcome was good with complete recovery. The risk was eliminated by changing the work procedure. This risk has not been reported earlier for furniture manufacture.

Various polyurethanes containing photoactive bis(azo) and bis(o-nitrobenzyl) groups in the main chain were synthesized by polyaddition reactions of diols such as bis(4-hydroxyphenylazo)-2,20-dinitrodiphenylmethane, 4-hydroxy-3-methylphenylazo- 40-hydroxyphenylazo-2,20-dinitrodiphenylmethane and bis(4-hydroxy-3- methylphenylazo)-2,20-dinitrodiphenylmethane with hexamethylene di-isocyanate (HMDI), in dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) in the presence of di-n-butyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) as catalyst. All of them were characterized by IR, UV-vis, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra and also by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC).

The J + 1 ← J transitions (J = 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) in the microwave spectrum of SiH3NCO have been assigned for the vibrational ground state and for the vibrational states v10 = 1, 2, and 3. The results for v10 = 0 confirm earlier work. The vibration-rotation constants show a remarkable variation with v10 and l10. To a large extent the anomalous behavior of these constants has been explained in terms of a strongly anharmonic potential function for the ν10 vibrational mode.

The microwave spectrum of SiD3NCO has been observed and analyzed for 18 different vibrational states in the ν10 manifold. Some accidental resonances have been observed and analyzed. The vibrational dependence of the rotational and l-doubling constant and centrifugal distortion constant DJK has been successfully interpreted in terms of the two-dimensional anharmonic oscillator model.

A range of linear polyurethanes featuring aliphatic, aromatic and ether residues have been prepared by co-polymerisation of novel 'masked' isocyanate A(2)-type monomers and diols. The reactive isocyanate monomers were generated in situ via the triphenylphosphine mediated decomposition of the heterocyclic disulfide, 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-dione. Two different synthetic approaches were examined and assessed for the construction of the novel A(2)-type monomers, which involved either coupling two 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones together through a spacer group or construction of 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones directly from diamines. The resulting polyurethanes were purified via solvent extraction and analysed using GPC, NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses. Molecular weight data were obtained and compared from both GPC and H-1 NMR (via end-group analysis) spectroscopic analysis. The thermal properties of the polyurethanes were determined using DSC and their solubility in common aprotic organic solvents was also assessed and related to their structural composition. Imidoylketenes 11 and oxoketenimines 12 are generated by flash vacuum thermolysis of Meldrum's acid derivatives 9, pyrrolediones 17 and 18, and triazole 19 and are observed by IR spectroscopy. Ketenimine-3-carboxylic acid esters 12a are isolable at room temperature. Ketenes 11 and ketenimines 12 undergo rapid interconversion in the gas phase, and the ketenes cyclize to 4-quinolones 13. When using an amine leaving group in Meldrum's acid derivatives 9c, the major reaction products are aryliminopropadienones, ArN=C=C=C=O (15). The latter react with 1 equiv of nucleophile to produce ketenimines 12 and with 2 equiv to afford maIonic acid imide derivatives 16. N-Arylketenimine-C-carboxamides 12c cyclize to quinolones 13c via the transient amidinoketenes 11c at temperatures of 25-40 degrees C. This implies rapid interconversion of ketenes and ketenimines by a 1,3-shift of the dimethylamino group, even at room temperature. This interconversion explains previously poorly understood outcomes of the ynamine-isocyanate reaction. The solvent dependence of the tautomerism of 4-quinolones/4-quinolinols is discussed. Rotational barriers of NMe2 groups in amidoketenimines 12c and malonioc amides and amidines 16 (24) are reported.

Isocyanate cross-linked hydroxy terminated polybutadiene is used as a binder for solid rocket propellant. Rocket motors containing this propellant require a storage life of at least 20 years. During storage it has been found that the important rubbery properties of the binder can be lost due to oxidative cross-linking of the polybutadiene chains. This could cause catastrophic failure when the rocket motor is required. At present the bis-hindered phenol Calco 2246 is used as a thermal oxidative stabiliser, but it's performance is only adequate. This has led to the search for a more efficient stabiliser system. To hasten the evaluation of new antioxidant systems the use of dynamic thermal analysis was investigated. Results showed that a tentative relationship existed between predictions by thermal analysis and the long term oven ageing for simple single antioxidant systems. But for more complex systems containing either autosynergistic or mixed antioxidants no relationship was observed suggesting that results for such an "accelerated" technique cannot be used for the purpose of extrapolation for long term performance. This was attributed to the short time and more aggressive condition used (hjgher temperature and oxygen rich atmosphere in thermal analysis) altering the mechanism of action of the antioxidants and not allowing time for co-operative effect of the combined antioxidant system to form. One potential problem for the binder system is the use of an diisocyanate as a cross-linking agent. This reacts with the hydroxyl hydrogen on the polymer as well as other active hydrogens such as those contained in a number of antioxidants, affecting both cross-linking and antioxidant effectiveness. Studies in this work showed that only antioxidants containing amine moieties have a significant affect on binder preparation, with the phenolic antioxidants not reacting. This is due to the greater nucleophilicity of the amines. Investigation of a range of antioxidant systems, including potentially homo, hetero and autosynergistic systems, has highlighted a number of systems which show considerably greater effectiveness than the currently used antioxidant Calco 2246. The only single antioxidant which showed improvement was the partially unhindered phenol y-Tocopherol. Of the mixed systems combinations of the sulphur containing antioxidants e.g. DLTP with higher levels of chain-breaking antioxidants, especially Calco 2246, were the most promising. Also the homosynergistic mix of an aromatic amine and a phenol was seen to be very effective but the results were inconsistent. This inconsistency could be explained by the method of sample preparation used. It was shown that the efficiency of a number of antioxidant.s could be dramatically improved by the use of ultrasound during the mixing stage of preparation. The reason for this increase in performance is unclear but in the case of the homosynergistic amine/phenol mix both more efficient mixing and/or the production of a novel mechanism of action are suggested

Glyoxalated soy flour adhesives for wood particleboard added with a much smaller proportion of glyoxalated lignin or tannin and without any addition of either formaldehyde or formaldehyde-based resin are shown to yield results satisfying the relevant standard specifications for interior wood boards. Adhesive resin formulations in which the total content of natural material is either 70 or 80% of the total resin solids content gave good results. The resins comprising 70% by weight of natural material can be used in a much lower proportion on wood chips and can afford pressing times fast enough to be significant under industrial panel pressing conditions. The best formulation of all the ones tried was the one based on glyoxalated precooked soy flour (SG), to which a condensed tannin was added in water solution and a polymeric isocyanate (pMDI), where the proportions of the components SG/T/pMDI was 54/16/30 by weight. In this paper, composites from polypropylene and Kraft pulp (from Pinus radiata) were prepared. Phenyl isocyanate, unblocked and phenol blocked derivatives of 4,4`-methylenebis (phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) were used as coupling agents and the mechanical properties of the obtained composites analyzed. The results showed that the addition of such compatibilizers readily improved the tensile and flexural strengths of the composites. However, no significant variation in the mechanical properties was observed for composite formulations comprising different isocyanate compounds. Accordingly, the chemical structure of isocyanate derivatives did not affect extensively the mechanical properties of MDI-coupled pine fiber reinforced composites. These results were similar to those obtained in previous studies regarding the efficiency of organosilane coupling agents. In comparison to monoreactive isocyanates, the addition of MIDI increased considerably the mechanical properties of pine fiber-polypropylene composites. The mechanical anchoring of polymeric PP chains onto the irregular reinforcement surface supported this result. Non-isothermal DSC analysis showed a slowing effect of MDI on the crystallization kinetics of the coupled composites. This may have been the result of diminished polymer chain mobility in the matrix due to mechanical anchoring onto the fiber surface. Considering these results, the occurrence of strong bonds between the composite components was stated, rather than the unique existence of Van der Waals interactions among the non-polar structures. A simple method for the measurement of pindolol enantiomers by HPLC is presented. Alkalinized serum or urine is extracted with ethyl acetate and the residue remaining after evaporation of the organic layer is then derivatised with (S)-(-)-alpha-methylbenzyl isocyanate. The diastereoisomers of derivatised pindolol and metoprolol (internal standard) are separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a C-18 silica column and detected using fluorescence (excitation lambda: 215 nm, emission lambda: 320 nm). The assay displays reproducible linearity for pindolol enantiomers with a correlation coefficient of r(2) greater than or equal to 0.998 over the concentration range 8-100 ng ml(-1) for plasma and 0.1-2.5 mu g ml(-1) for urine. The coefficient of variation for accuracy and precision of the quality control samples for both plasma and urine are consistently

Nanocomposite materials with an organic-inorganic urea-silicate (di-ureasil) based matrix containing gold nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and characterized by optical (UV/Vis) spectroscopy and indentation measurement. The urea silicate gels were obtained by reaction between silicon alkoxyde modified by isocyanate group and polyethylene glycol oligomer with amine terminal groups in presence of catalyst. The latter ensures the successful incorporation of citrate-stabilized gold NPs in the matrix. It is shown that using a convenient destabilizing agent (AgNO3) and governing the preparative conditions, the aggregation degree of gold NPs can be controlled. The developed synthesis procedure significantly simplifies the preparative procedure of gold/urea silicate nanocomposites, compared to the procedure using gold NPs, preliminary covered with silica shells. Mechanical properties of the prepared sample were characterised using depth sensing indentation methods (DSI) and an idea about the type of aggregation structures was suggested.

Introduction: Isocyanates are sensitizing chemicals used in various industries such as polyurethane foam production or paint-related purposes. Acting as haptens recognized by T-lymphocytes, they can cause allergic asthma and rarely hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). We aim to present a case report of acute HP due to hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in a paint quality controller, a profession not generally considered at a high risk for work-related Isocyanates exposure. Case report: A 30-yr-old otherwise healthy female, light smoker working as a paint quality controller developed shortness of breath, malaise, sweating and chills at workplace six hours after handling a HDI-based hardener. Upon admission to emergency department, symptoms had progressed to severe respiratory failure. HR computer tomography (HRCT) showed bilateral ground-glass attenuation without pleural effusion. Rapid clinical and radiological improvement occurred under facial oxygen supply and systemic steroid therapy. Occupational medicine investigations revealed regular handling of HDI using latex gloves without respiratory protection. Assessment at workplace showed insufficient air renewal (1.5 times per hour), inadequate local aspiration and HDI exposure at levels of 1-4.25 ppb/m3 (Swiss Occupation Exposure Limit 5 ppb/m3). Biological monitoring after identical work procedure executed by a co-worker showed HDI exposure (5.1 micrograms hexamethylene diamine/g creatinine). Resumption of work was disadvised because of the life-threatening event. Discussion: The diagnosis of occupational HP is highly supported by classical findings on imagery and typical symptoms occurring within approved latency interval, associated with rapid clinical improvement. Although neither broncho-alveolar lavage nor specific IgG diagnosis (en route) were performed during the acute episode, various blood tests managed to rule out evidence of an infection or autoimmune disease. Other causes of HP seem unlikely as the patient did not have any recurrence of symptoms since absence from work. Workplace evaluation provided significant information on HDI exposure and allowed substantial recommendations to diminish Isocyanate exposure for the 20 still healthy laboratory co-workers. Although the entryways (air or skin) and precise mechanism of toxicity remain unclear, the present case clearly shows that Isocyanates may trigger acute HP in susceptible workers in a profession not generally considered at a high risk.
