The surfactant effect of isoelectronic indium doping during metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth of cubic GaN on GaAs (1 0 0) substrates was studied. Its influence on the optical properties and surface morphology was investigated by using room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and atomic force microscopy. It is shown that the sample with small amount of In-doping has a narrower PL linewidth, and a smoother surface than undoped cubic GaN layers. A slight red shift of the near-band-edge emission peak was observed. These results revealed that, for small TMIn flow rates, indium played the role of the surfactant doping and effectively improved the cubic GaN film quality; for large TMIn flow rates, the alloying formation of Ga1-xInxN might have occurred. A two-hot-boat chemical vapor deposition system was modified from a thermal evaporation equipment. This system has the advantage of high vacuum, rapid heating rate and temperature separately controlled boats for the source and samples. These are in favor of synthesizing compound semiconducting nano-materials. By the system, we have synthesized high-quality wurtzite single crystal GaN nanowires and nanotip triangle pyramids via an in-situ doping indium surfactant technique on Si and 3C-SiC epilayer/Si substrates. The products were analyzed by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, highresolution transmission electron microscopy, energy- dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. The GaN nanotip triangle pyramids, synthesized with this novel method, have potential application in electronic/ photonic devices for field-emission and laser.

The effects of In doped low-temperature (LT) AlGaN interlayer on the properties of GaN/Si(111) by MOCVD have been investigated. Using In doping LT-interlayer can decrease the stress sufficiently for avoiding crack formation in a thick (2.0 mu m) GaN layer. Significant improvement in the crystal and optical properties of GaN layer is also achieved. In doping is observed to reduce the stress in AlGaN interlayer measured by high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). It can provide more compressive stress to counteract tensile stress and reduce crack density in subsequent GaN layer. Moreover, as a surfactant, indium is observed to cause an enhanced PL intensity and the narrowed linewidths of PL and XRD spectra for the LT-interlayer. Additionally, the crystal quality of GaN layer is found to be dependent on the growth parameters of underneath In-doped LT-AlGaN interlayer. The optimal parameters, such as TMIn flow rate, TMAl flow rates and thickness, are achieved to obtain nearly 2.0 mu m thick crack free GaN film with advanced optical and crystal properties. The surfactant-assisted seed-mediated growth method was used for the formation of gold nanorods (GNRs) directly on gold (Au) and indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces. Citrate-stabilized similar to 2.6 nm spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were first self-assembled on ITO or Au surfaces modified with (3-mercaptopropyl)-trimethoxysilane (MPTS) sol-gel film and then immersed in a cationic surfactant growth solution to form GNRs. The growth of GNRs on the MPTS sol gel film modified ITO surface was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy. The ITO surface with the attached spherical AuNPs shows a surface plasmon resonance band at 550 nm. The intensity of this absorption band increases while increasing the immersion time of the AuNP-modified ITO surface into the growth solution, and after 5 h, an additional shoulder band around 680 nm was observed. The intensity of this shoulder band increases, and it was shifted to longer wavelength as the immersion time of the AuNP-modified ITO surface into the growth solution increases. After 20 h, a predominant wave at 720 nm was observed along with a band at 550 nm. Further immersion of the modified ITO surface into the growth solution did not change the absorption characteristics. The bands observed at 550 and 720 nm were characteristics of GNRs, corresponding to transverse and longitudinal waves, respectively. The AFM images showed the presence of GNRs on the surface of the MPTS sol gel modified ITO surface with a typical length of similar to 100-120 nm and a width of similar to 20-22 nm in addition to a few spherical AuNPs, indicating that seeded spherical AuNPs were not completely involved in the GNRs' formation. Finally, the electrocatalytic activity of the surface-grown GNRs on the MPTS sol gel film modified Au electrode toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) was studied. Unlike a polycrystalline Au electrode, the surface-grown GNR-modified electrode shows two well-defined voltammetric peaks for AA at 0.01 and 0.35 V in alkaline, neutral, and acidic pHs. The cause for the observed two oxidation peaks for AA was due to the presence of both nanorods and spherical nanoparticles on the electrode surface. The presence of spherical AuNPs on the MPTS sol gel film oxidized AA at more positive potential, whereas the GNRs oxidized AA at less positive potential. The observed 340 mV less positive potential shift in the oxidation of AA suggested that GNRs are better electrocatalysts for the oxidation of AA than the spherical AuNPs.

Crack-free GaN films have been achieved by inserting an Indoped low-temperature (LT) AlGaN interlayer grown on silicon by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The relationship between lattice constants c and a obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis shows that indium doping interlayer can reduce the stress in GaN layers. The stress in GaN decreases with increasing trimethylindium (TMIn) during interlayer growth. Moreover, for a smaller TMIn flow, the stress in GaN decreases dramatically when In acts as a surfactant to improve the crystallinity of the AlGaN interlayer, and for a larger TMIn flow, the stress will increase again. The decreased stress leads to smoother surfaces and fewer cracks for GaN layers by using an In-doped interlayer than by using an undoped interlayer. In doping has been found to enhance the lateral growth and reduce the growth rate of the c face. It can explain the strain relief and cracks reduction in GaN films. Sb-assisted GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells (QWs) with high (42.5%) indium content were investigated systematically. Transmission electron microscopy, reflection high-energy electron diffraction and photoluminescence (PL) measurements reveal that Sb acts as a surfactant to suppress three-dimensional growth. The improvement in the 1.55 mu m range is much more apparent than that in the 1.3 mu m range.. which can be attributed to the difference in N composition. The PL intensity and the full-width at half maximum of the 1.55 mu m single-QW were comparable with that of the 1.3 Am QWs. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A soluble nonionic surfactant, polyethylenimine 80% ethoxylated (PEIE) solution, was used as the electron injection material in inverted bottom-emission organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The transparent PEIE film was formed on indium-tin-oxide cathode by simple spin-coating method and it was found that the electron injection was greatly enhanced. The devices with PEIE electron injection layer had achieved significant enhancement in luminance and efficiency. The maximum luminance reached 47 000 cd/m(2), and the maximum luminance efficiency and power efficiency arrived at 19.7 cd/A and 10.6 lm/W, respectively.

It is known that boehmite (AlOOH) nanofibers formed in the presence of nonionic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) surfactant at 373 K. A novel approach is proposed in this study for the growth of the boehmite nanofibers: when fresh aluminum hydrate precipitate was added at regular interval to initial mixture of boehmite and PEO surfactant at 373 K, the nanofibers grow from 40 to 50 nm long to over 100 nm. It is believed that the surfactant micelles play an important role in the nanofiber growth: directing the assembly of aluminum hydrate particles through hydrogen bonding with the hydroxyls on the surface of aluminum hydrate particles. Meanwhile a gradual improvement in the crystallinity of the fibers during growth is observed and attributed to the Ostwald ripening process. This approach allows us to precisely control the size and morphology of boehmite nanofibers using soft chemical methods and could be useful for low temperature, aqueous syntheses of other oxide nanomaterials with tailorable structural specificity such as size, dimension and morphology.

Thermal analysis and differential thermal analysis offers a means of studying the desorption of acids such as stearic acid from clay surfaces. Both adsorption and chemisorption can be distinguished through the differences in the temperature of the mass losses. Increased adsorption is achievable by adsorbing onto a surfactant adsorbed montmorillonite. Stearic acid sublimes at 179 °C but when adsorbed upon montmorillonite sublimes at 207 and 248 °C. These mass loss steps are ascribed to the desorption of the stearic acid on the external surfaces of the organoclays and from the de-chemisorption from the surfactant held in the interlayer of the montmorillonite.

The transition of cubic indium hydroxide to cubic indium oxide has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis complimented with hot stage Raman spectroscopy. Thermal analysis shows the transition of In(OH)3 to In2O3 occurs at 219°C. The structure and morphology of In(OH)3 synthesised using a soft chemical route at low temperatures was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. A topotactical relationship exists between the micro/nano-cubes of In(OH)3 and In2O3. The Raman spectrum of In(OH)3 is characterised by an intense sharp band at 309 cm-1 attributed to ν1 In-O symmetric stretching mode, bands at 1137 and 1155 cm-1 attributed to In-OH δ deformation modes, bands at 3083, 3215, 3123 and 3262 cm-1 assigned to the OH stretching vibrations. Upon thermal treatment of In(OH)3 new Raman bands are observed at 125, 295, 488 and 615 cm-1 attributed to In2O3. Changes in the structure of In(OH)3 with thermal treatment is readily followed by hot stage Raman spectroscopy.

Insight into the unique structure of layered double hydroxides has been obtained using a combination of X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. Indium containing hydrotalcites of formula Mg4In2(CO3)(OH)12•4H2O (2:1 In-LDH) through to Mg8In2(CO3)(OH)18•4H2O (4:1 In-LDH) with variation in the Mg:In ratio have been successfully synthesised. The d(003) spacing varied from 7.83 Å for the 2:1 LDH to 8.15 Å for the 3:1 indium containing layered double hydroxide. Distinct mass loss steps attributed to dehydration, dehydroxylation and decarbonation are observed for the indium containing hydrotalcite. Dehydration occurs over the temperature range ambient to 205 °C. Dehydroxylation takes place in a series of steps over the 238 to 277 °C temperature range. Decarbonation occurs between 763 and 795 °C. The dehydroxylation and decarbonation steps depend upon the Mg:In ratio. The formation of indium containing hydrotalcites and their thermal activation provides a method for the synthesis of indium oxide based catalysts.

Cubic indium hydroxide nanomaterials were obtained by a low temperature soft-chemical method without any surfactants. The transition of nano-cubic indium hydroxide to cubic indium oxide during dehydroxylation has been studied by infrared emission spectroscopy. The spectra are related to the structure of the materials and the changes in the structure upon thermal treatment. The infrared absorption spectrum of In(OH)3 is characterised by an intense OH deformation band at 1150 cm-1 and two O-H stretching bands at 3107 and 3221 cm-1. In the infrared emission spectra, the hydroxyl-stretching and hydroxyl-bending bands diminish dramatically upon heating, and no intensity remains after 200 °C. However, new low intensity bands are found in the OH deformation region at 915 cm-1 and in OH stretching region at 3437 cm-1. These bands are attributed to the vibrations of newly formed InOH bonds because of the release and transfer of protons during calcination of the nanomaterial. The use of infrared emission spectroscopy enables the low-temperature phase transition brought about through dehydration of In(OH)3 nanocubes to be studied.

Infrared spectroscopy has been used to study the adsorption of paranitrophenol on mono, di and tri alkyl surfactant intercalated montmorillonite. Organoclays were obtained by the cationic exchange of mono, di and tri alkyl chain surfactants for sodium ions [hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMAB), dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DDOAB), methyltrioctadecylammonium bromide (MTOAB)] in an aqueous solution with Na-montmorillonite. Upon formation of the organoclay, the properties change from strongly hydrophilic to strongly hydrophobic. This change in surface properties is observed by a decrease in intensity of the OH stretching vibrations assigned to water in the cation hydration sphere of the montmorillonite. As the cation is replaced by the surfactant molecules the paranitrophenol replaces the surfactant molecules in the clay interlayer. Bands attributed to CH stretching and bending vibrations change for the surfactant intercalated montmorillonite. Strong changes occur in the HCH deformation modes of the methyl groups of the surfactant. These changes are attributed to the methyl groups locking into the siloxane surface of the montmorillonite. Such a concept is supported by changes in the SiO stretching bands of the montmorillonite siloxane surface. This study demonstrates that paranitrophenol will penetrate into the untreated clay interlayer and replace the intercalated surfactant in surfactant modified clay, resulting in the change of the arrangement of the intercalated surfactant.
