Solid-state compounds of general formula LnL(3).2H(2)O, where Ln is heavier trivalent lanthanides and yttrium, L is 4-chlorobenzylidenepyruvate have been synthetised. On heating these compounds decompose in steps. They lose the hydration water in the first step and the thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occurs with the formation of oxochloride (Eu, Gd); mixture of oxide and oxochloride that decrease with increasing of atomic number of metal (Tb-Tm); or oxide (Yb, Lu, Y) as final residue, up to 900degreesC. The dehydration enthalpies found for terbium, holmium, ytterbium and yttrium compounds were: 34.93, 42.40, 57.39 and 62.24 kJ mol(-1), respectively.

Solid-state Ln(L)(3) compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y, and L is 3-methoxybenzoate, have been synthesized. X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, complexometry and elemental analysis were used to characterize the compounds. In order to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used. The results provided information on the composition, dehydration, polymorphic transformation, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds.

Selective extraction-separation of yttrium(Ill) from heavy lanthanides into 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C(8)mim][PF6]) containing Cyanex 923 was achieved by adding a water-soluble complexing agent (EDTA) to aqueous phase. The simple and environmentally benign complexing method was proved to be an effective strategy for enhancing the selectivity of [C(n)mim] [PF6]/[Tf2N]-based extraction system without increasing the loss of [C(n)mim](+). Despite being the most suitable candidates for solenoid pole pieces in state-of-the-art superconductor- based electromagnets, the intrinsic magnetic properties of heavy rare earth metals and their alloys have gained comparatively little attention. With the potential of integration in micro- and nanoscale devices, thin films of Gd, Dy, Tb, DyGd and DyTb were plasma-sputtered and investigated for their in-plane magnetic properties, with an emphasis on magnetisation vs. temperature profiles. Based on crystal structure analysis of the polycrystalline rare earth films, which consist of a low magnetic moment FCC layer at the seed interface topped with a higher moment HCP layer, an experimental protocol is introduced which allows the direct magnetic analysis of the individual layers. In line with the general trend of heavy lanthanides, the saturation magnetisation was found to drop with increasing unit cell size. In-situ annealed rare earth films exceeded the saturation magnetisation of a high-moment Fe65Co35 reference film in the cryogenic temperature regime, proving their potential for pole piece applications; however as-deposited rare earth films were found completely unsuitable. In agreement with theoretical predictions, sufficiently strained crystal phases of Tb and Dy did not exhibit an incommensurate magnetic order, unlike their single-crystal counterparts which have a helical phase. DyGd and DyTb alloys followed the trends of the elemental rare earth metals in terms of crystal structure and magnetic properties. Inter-rare-earth alloys hence present a desirable blend of saturation magnetisation and operating temperature.

An integrated whole-rock petrographic and geochemical study has been carried out on kamafugites and kimberlites of the Late Cretaceous Alto Paranaiba igneous province, in Brazil, and their main minerals, olivine, clinopyroxene, perovskite, phlogopite, spinels and ilmenite. Perovskite is by far the dominant repository for light lanthanides, Nb, Ta, Th and U, and occasionally other elements, reaching concentrations up to 3.4 x 10(4) chondrite values for light lanthanides and 105 chondrite for Th. A very strong fractionation between light and heavy lanthanides (chondrite-normalized La/Yb from similar to 175 to similar to 2000) is also observed. This is likely the first comprehensive dataset on natural perovskite. Clinopyroxene has variable trace-element contents. likely due to the different position of this phase in the crystallization sequence; Sc reaches values as high as 200 ppm whereas the lanthanides show very variable enrichment in light over heavy REE, and commonly show a negative Eu anomaly. The olivine, phlogopite (and tetra-ferriphlogopite), Cr-Ti oxide and ilmenite are substantially barren minerals for lanthanides and most other trace elements, with the exception of Ba, Cs and Rb in mica, and V, Nb and Ta in ilmenite. Estimated mineral/whole-rock partition coefficients for lanthanides in perovskite are similar to previous determinations, though much higher than those calculated in experiments with synthetic compositions, testifying once more to the complex behavior of these elements in a natural environment. The enormous potential for exploitation of lanthanides, Th, U and high-field-strength elements in the Brazilian kamafugites, kimberlites and related rocks is clearly shown.

The extraction behavior of lanthanides and yttrium usinsg CYANEX 925 (mixture of branched chain alkylated phosphine oxides) in n-heptane from nitrate medium has been studied. The effects of aqueous phase ionic strength, CYANEX 925 concentration in the organic phase, and temperature on Sm3+, Nd3+ and Y3+ extraction have been investigated. The extractability of the lanthanides and yttrium increases with increasing nitrate concentration, as well as with increasing CYANEX 925 concentration. An extraction mechanism is proposed based on slope analysis. Furthermore, the infra-red spectra of CYANEX 925 saturated with lanthanides are employed to provide evidence of the composition of the complex. The relationship between the logarithm of the distribution ratio and lanthanide atomic number is also discussed which indicates that yttrium can be separated from fight lanthanides. In addition separation of the light and heavy lanthanide groups is also possible using CYANEX 925. From the temperature dependence data, the thermodynamic parameters values (Delta H, Delta S and Delta G) are calculated.

Solid-state Ln-L compounds, where Ln stands for heavy trivalent lanthanides or yttrium(III) (Tb-Lu, Y) and L is succinate, have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy, TG-DTA coupled to FTIR, elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffractometry and complexometry were used to characterize and study the thermal behavior of these compounds. For the terbium to thulium and yttrium compounds, the dehydration, as well the thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compound occurs in two consecutive steps, while ytterbium and lutetium the dehydration occurs in a single step. The results also led to information about the ligand's denticity, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of these compounds. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

This paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for heavy truck suspension systems based on modified skyhook damping (MSD) control, which improves ride comfort and road-friendliness simultaneously. A four-axle heavy truck-road coupling system model was established using functional virtual prototype technology; the model was then validated through a ride comfort test. As the mechanical properties and time lag of dampers were taken into account, MSD control of active and semi-active dampers was implemented using Matlab/Simulink. Through co-simulations with Adams and Matlab, the effects of passive, semi-active MSD control, and active MSD control were analyzed and compared; thus, control parameters which afforded the best integrated performance were chosen. Simulation results indicated that MSD control improves a truck’s ride comfort and roadfriendliness, while the semi-active MSD control damper obtains road-friendliness comparable to the active MSD control damper.
