Objectives: To evaluate the anti-erosive potential of solutions containing sodium fluoride (NaF, 225 ppm F) and different film-forming agents. Methods: In Phase 1, hydroxyapatite crystals were pre-treated with solutions containing NaF (F), linear sodium polyphosphate (LPP), sodium pyrophosphate tetrabasic (PP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STP), sodium caseinate (SC), bovine serum albumin (BSA), stannous chloride (Sn) and some combinations thereof. Deionized water was the control (C). The pH-stat method was used to evaluate hydroxyapatite dissolution. In Phase 2, the most effective solutions were tested in two independent experiments. Both consisted of an erosion-remineralization cycling model using enamel and dentine specimens with three solution treatments per day. In Phase 2a, the challenge was performed with 0.3% citric acid (pH = 3.8). In Phase 2b, 1% citric acid (pH = 2.4) was used. Hard tissue surface loss was determined profilometrically. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests. Results: In Phase 1, F, LPP, Sn and some of their combinations caused the greatest reduction in hydroxyapatite dissolution. In Phase 2a, C showed the highest enamel loss, followed by LPP. There were no differences between all other groups. In Phase 2b: (F + LPP + Sn) < (F + LPP) = (F + Sn) < (F) = (LPP + Sn) < (LPP) < (Sn) < C. For dentine, in both experiments, only the fluoride-containing groups showed lower surface loss than C, except for LPP + Sn in 2a.Conclusions: F, Sn, LPP reduced enamel erosion, this effect was enhanced by their combination under highly erosive conditions. For dentine, the F-containing groups showed similar protective effect.Clinical significance: The addition of LPP and/or Sn can improve the fluoride solution protection against erosion of enamel but not of dentine. In this work, we present an investigation on the thickness of the eroded enamel layer in tooth samples after exposure to citric and hydrochloric acid by using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM). Approaching curves with typical negative feedback behavior were obtained in enamel samples for evaluation of topographic changes. In a control experiment, SECM images showed no significant difference in the current monitored during the scan, implying that enamel demineralization did not occur in mineral water medium. Topographic SECM images obtained after contact with citric and hydrochloric acid for different periods of time showed a significant increase in the current relative to a previously protected surface, indicating the structural loss of enamel. The thickness of the enamel layer eroded after contact with hydrochloric acid was significantly higher when compared to the one obtained with citric acid. Hence, our results showed that the enamel acid erosion is a relatively fast process, which is strongly dependent on parameters such as pH, time, acid strength and acid concentration.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the erosive potential of orange juice modified with food-approved additives: 0.4 g/l of calcium (Ca) from calcium lactate pentahydrate, 0.2 g/l of linear sodium polyphosphate (LPP) or their combination (Ca+LPP) were added to a commercially available orange juice (negative control, C-). A commercially available calcium-modified orange juice (1.6 g/l of calcium) was the positive control (C+). These juices were tested using a short-term erosion in situ model, consisting of a five-phase, single-blind crossover clinical trial involving 10 subjects. In each phase, subjects inserted custom-made palatal appliances containing 8 bovine enamel specimens in the mouth and performed erosive challenges for a total of 0 (control), 10, 20, and 30 min. Two specimens were randomly removed from the appliances after each challenge period. Enamel surface microhardness was measured before and after the clinical phase and the percentage of surface microhardness change (%SMC) was determined. Before the procedures, in each phase, the subjects performed a taste test, where the juice assigned to that phase was blindly compared to C-. Overall, C+ showed the lowest %SMC, being the least erosive solution (p < 0.05), followed by Ca+LPP and Ca, which did not differ from each other (p > 0.05). LPP and C- were the most erosive solutions (p <0.05). Taste differences were higher for C+ (5/10 subjects) and Ca (4/10 subjects), but detectable in all groups, including C- (2/10 subjects). Calcium reduced the erosive potential of the orange juice, while no protection was observed for LPP. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

The aims of this study were to determine the effects of pH and acid concentration on the dissolution of enamel, dentine, and compressed hydroxyapatite (HA) in citric acid solutions (15.6 and 52.1 mmol l(-1) ; pH 2.45, 3.2, and 3.9), using a pH-stat system. After an initial adjustment period, the dissolution rates of enamel and HA were constant, while that of dentine decreased with time. The dissolution rate increased as the pH decreased, and this was most marked for enamel. To compare substrates, the rate of mineral dissolution was normalized to the area occupied by mineral at the specimen surface. For a given acid concentration, the normalized dissolution rate of HA was always less than that for either dentine or enamel. The dissolution rate for dentine mineral was similar to that for enamel at pH 2.45 and greater at pH 3.2 and pH 3.9. The concentration of acid significantly affected the enamel dissolution rate at pH 2.45 and pH 3.2, but not at pH 3.9, and did not significantly affect the dissolution rates of dentine or HA at any pH. The variation in response of the dissolution rate to acid concentration/buffer capacity with respect to pH and tissue type might complicate attempts to predict erosive potential from solution composition.

The aims were to investigate the effect of monoalkyl phosphates (MAPs) and fluoride on dissolution rate of native and saliva-coated hydroxyapatite (HA). Fluoride at 300 mg/l (as NaF) inhibited dissolution of native HA by 12%, while potassium and sodium dodecyl phosphates (PDP, SDP), at 0.1% or higher, inhibited dissolution by 26-34%. MAPs, but not fluoride, also showed persistence of action. MAPs at 0.5% and fluoride at 300 mg/l were then tested separately against HA pre-treated with human saliva for 2 or 18 h. Agents were applied with brushing to half the specimens, and without brushing to the other half. In control (water-treated) specimens, pre-treatment of HA with human saliva reduced dissolution rate on average by 41% (2 h) and 63% (18 h). Brushing did not have a statistically significant effect on dissolution rate of saliva-coated specimens. In brushed specimens, fluoride significantly increased the inhibition due to 2- or 18-hour saliva pre-treatment. It is hypothesised that brushing partially removes the salivary film and allows KOH-soluble calcium fluoride formation at the surfaces of HA particles. Inhibition was reduced by PDP in 2-hour/non-brushed specimens and in 18-hour/brushed specimens. PDP did not affect dissolution rates in the remaining groups and SDP did not affect dissolution rate in any group. Possible reasons for these variable results are discussed. The experiments show that pre-treatment with saliva can significantly modify results of tests on potential anti-erosive agents and it is recommended that saliva pre-treatment should be a routine part of testing such agents.

Biphasic calcium phosphates have received considerable attention due to their optimum dissolution rate in the human body after implantation. These materials are composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and resorbable tricalcium phosphate (TCP). In the present investigation, HA whiskers are reinforced into TCP to enhance the mechanical properties of this biphasic composite. Various amounts (30-50 wt%) HA whiskers are reinforced in TCP matrix. Microstructural characterization has been carried out using field-emission scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties have been investigated by microindentation in a universal testing machine (UTM). As TCP is resorbable, it will dissolve in body fluid and there is a strong possibility for the faceted HA whiskers to interact with functional groups present in the body fluid surroundings.

Tooth surface modification is a potential method of preventing dental erosion, a form of excessive tooth wear facilitated by softening of tooth surfaces through the direct action of acids, mainly of dietary origin. We have previously shown that dodecyl phosphates (DPs) effectively inhibit dissolution of native surfaces of hydroxyapatite (the type mineral for dental enamel) and show good substantivity. However, adsorbed saliva also inhibits dissolution and DPs did not augment this effect, which suggests that DPs and saliva interact at the hydroxyapatite surface. In the present study the adsorption and desorption of potassium and sodium dodecyl phosphates or sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) to hydroxyapatite and human tooth enamel powder, both native and pre-treated with saliva, were studied by high performance liquid chromatography-mass Spectrometry. Thermo gravimetric analysis was used to analyse residual saliva and surfactant on the substrates. Both DPs showed a higher affinity than SDS for both hydroxyapatite and enamel, and little DP was desorbed by washing with water. SDS was readily desorbed from hydroxyapatite, suggesting that the phosphate head group is essential for strong binding to this substrate. However, SDS was not desorbed from enamel, so that this substrate has surface properties different from those of hydroxyapatite. The presence of a salivary coating had little or no effect on adsorption of the DPs, but treatment with DPs partly desorbed saliva; this could account for the failure of DPs to increase the dissolution inhibition due to adsorbed saliva.

Melt quenched silicate glasses containing calcium, phosphorous and alkali metals have the ability to promote bone regeneration and to fuse to living bone. These glasses, including 45S5 Bioglass(A (R)) [(CaO)(26.9)(Na2O)(24.4)(SiO2)(46.1)(P2O5)(2.6)], are routinely used as clinical implants. Consequently there have been numerous studies on the structure of these glasses using conventional diffraction techniques. These studies have provided important information on the atomic structure of Bioglass(A (R)) but are of course intrinsically limited in the sense that they probe the bulk material and cannot be as sensitive to thin layers of near-surface dissolution/growth. The present study therefore uses surface sensitive shallow angle X-ray diffraction to study the formation of amorphous calcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite on Bioglass(A (R)) samples, pre-reacted in simulated body fluid (SBF). Unreacted Bioglass(A (R)) is dominated by a broad amorphous feature around 2.2 A...(-1) which is characteristic of sodium calcium silicate glass. After reacting Bioglass(A (R)) in SBF a second broad amorphous feature evolves similar to 1.6 A...(-1) which is attributed to amorphous calcium phosphate. This feature is evident for samples after only 4 h reacting in SBF and by 8 h the amorphous feature becomes comparable in magnitude to the background signal of the bulk Bioglass(A (R)). Bragg peaks characteristic of hydroxyapatite form after 1-3 days of reacting in SBF.

Relationship dissolution has been somewhat ignored in the study of relationship marketing paradigm. While there has been an abundance of literature giving broad conceptualizations on how to master the intricacies of relationships, very little has discussed the concept of relationship dissolution. This is especially true of the sporting industry, which does not yet understand the factors that contribute to members relinquishing their membership and severing relationship ties with the club. Team performance was found to be the most powerful predictor of relationship dissolution; however, both satisfaction with the sportscape and emotional bonds had a significant influence on the decision for a member not to renew their membership. Although team performance is mostly out of the hands of sport marketers, greater focus should be given to implementing strategies that enhance the emotional aspects of the club-member relationship while also improving aspects of the service facility.
