Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) based on natural products is one important part of the Chinese civilization.Owing to the complexity of the composition, the study on medical effective components and curative effects are very difficult;Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Praeparata) has been widely used for cardiotonic and analgesics in China, however, the component-aconitine in which is very toxic and may cause some side-effect.This paper reported the application of electrospray iohization mass spectrometric(ESIMS) technique on study of the compound prescriptions containing fuzi,Renshensini concoction and Baweidihuang concoction,to explore the mechanism of synergy between fuzi and other herbs. From chemical point of view, the detoxification mechanism can be attributed to the hydrolysis of the solubility of toxic diester-alkaloids from concoctions of fuzi.Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata,Rhizoma Zingiberis,Radix Ginsengp promote the hydrolysis to produce the less toxic monoester-alkaloids and Fructus Corni reduce the solubility of hypaconitine from fuzi.

Ion/molecule reactions of C-60 with vinyl acetate under chemical ionization conditions have been studied here. Compared with C2H3O+ from acetone, C2H3O+ from vinyl acetate undergoes the reactions more easily, a new heterocycle between C-60 and the studied ion is formed The generation of two sigma-bonds and little angle tensile force of pentatomic ring make it more stable.

The binary cluster (CH3OH)(n)(NH3)(m) was studied by using a multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MPI-TOFMS). The measured two series of protonated cluster ions: (CH3OH)(n)H+ and (CH3OH)(n)NH4+ (1 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 14) were attributed to the ion-molecule reaction in the binary cluster ions. The mixed cluster of CH3OD with ammonia was also studied. The results implied that the proton transfer probability from the OD group was larger than that from CH3 group. The ab initio calculation of the binary cluster was carried out at the HF/STO-3G and MP2/6-31G** levels of theory, and indicated that the latter process of the proton transfer must overcome a barrier of similar to 29 kcal/mol. This thesis presents investigations of chemical reactions occurring at the liquid/vapor interface studied using novel sampling methodologies coupled with detection by mass spectrometry. Chapters 2 and 3 utilize the recently developed technique of field-induced droplet ionization mass spectrometry (FIDI-MS), in which the application of a strong electric field to a pendant microliter droplet results in the ejection of highly charged progeny droplets from the liquid surface. In Chapter 2, this method is employed to study the base-catalyzed dissociation of a surfactant molecule at the liquid/vapor interface upon uptake of ammonia from the gas phase. This process is observed to occur without significant modulation of the bulk solution pH, suggesting a transient increase in surface pH following the uptake of gaseous ammonia. Chapter 3 presents real-time studies of the oxidation of the model tropospheric organic compound glycolaldehyde by photodissociation of iron (III) oxalate complexes. The oxidation products of glycolaldehyde formed in this process are identified, and experiments in a deoxygenated environment identify the role of oxygen in the oxidation pathway and in the regeneration of iron (III) following photo-initiated reduction. Chapter 4 explores alternative methods for the study of heterogeneous reaction processes by mass spectrometric sampling from liquid surfaces. Bursting bubble ionization (BBI) and interfacial sampling with an acoustic transducer (ISAT) generate nanoliter droplets from a liquid surface that can be sampled via the atmospheric pressure interface of a mass spectrometer. Experiments on the oxidation of oleic acid by ozone using ISAT are also presented. Chapters 5 and 6 detail mechanistic studies and applications of free-radical-initiated peptide sequencing (FRIPS), a technique employing gas-phase free radical chemistry to the sequencing of peptides and proteins by mass spectrometry. Chapter 5 presents experimental and theoretical studies on the anomalous mechanism of dissociation observed in the presence of serine and threonine residues in peptides. Chapter 6 demonstrates the combination of FRIPS with ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) for the separation of isomeric peptides.

In this paper we give an overview of some very recent work, as well as presenting a new approach, on the stochastic simulation of multi-scaled systems involving chemical reactions. In many biological systems (such as genetic regulation and cellular dynamics) there is a mix between small numbers of key regulatory proteins, and medium and large numbers of molecules. In addition, it is important to be able to follow the trajectories of individual molecules by taking proper account of the randomness inherent in such a system. We describe different types of simulation techniques (including the stochastic simulation algorithm, Poisson Runge-Kutta methods and the balanced Euler method) for treating simulations in the three different reaction regimes: slow, medium and fast. We then review some recent techniques on the treatment of coupled slow and fast reactions for stochastic chemical kinetics and present a new approach which couples the three regimes mentioned above. We then apply this approach to a biologically inspired problem involving the expression and activity of LacZ and LacY proteins in E coli, and conclude with a discussion on the significance of this work. Chemical reaction studies of N-methyl-N-propyl-pyrrolidinium-bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide-based ionic liquid with the lithium metal surface were performed using ab initio molecular dynamics (aMD) simulations and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The molecular dynamics simulations showed rapid and spontaneous decomposition of the ionic liquid anion, with subsequent formation of long-lived species such as lithium fluoride. The simulations also revealed the cation to retain its structure by generally moving away from the lithium surface. The XPS experiments showed evidence of decomposition of the anion, consistent with the aMD simulations and also of cation decomposition and it is envisaged that this is due to the longer time scale for the XPS experiment compared to the time scale of the aMD simulation. Overall experimental results confirm the majority of species suggested by the simulation. The rapid chemical decomposition of the ionic liquid was shown to form a solid electrolyte interphase composed of the breakdown products of the ionic liquid components in the absence of an applied voltage.

Double diffusive Marangoni convection flow of viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in a square cavity is studied in this paper by taking into consideration of the effect of applied magnetic field in arbitrary direction and the chemical reaction. The governing equations are solved numerically by using alternate direct implicit (ADI) method together with the successive over relaxation (SOR) technique. The flow pattern with the effect of governing parameters, namely the buoyancy ratio W, diffusocapillary ratio w, and the Hartmann number Ha, is investigated. It is revealed from the numerical simulations that the average Nusselt number decreases; whereas the average Sherwood number increases as the orientation of magnetic field is shifted from horizontal to vertical. Moreover, the effect of buoyancy due to species concentration on the flow is stronger than the one due to thermal buoyancy. The increase in diffusocapillary parameter, w caus

An analysis of gas absorption accompanied by chemical reaction in the presence of interfacial resistance is presented. The analysis indicates that the effect of interfacial resistance on interphase mass transfer is significantly higher in presence of a reaction compared to the pure absorption case. For fixed values of surface resistance and contact time, the difference between the amount of gas transferred across the interface with and without surface resistance increases as the value of reaction velocity increases. For ranges of contact time and surface resistance of practical relevance, the influence of surface resistance is too high to be neglected while designing gas-liquid contactors.

On the basis of dodecahedral structure of a foam bed, a model to predict conversion in a foam bed contactor with mass transfer with chemical reaction has been developed. To verify the proposed model, experiments have been carried out in a semi-batch apparatus for the absorption of lean CO2 gas in a foam of sodium hydroxide solution. The proposed model predicts fairly well the experimentally found absorption values.

A mathematical model for doped-oxide-source diffusion is proposed. In this model the concept of segregation of impurity at the silicon-silicon dioxide is used and also a constant of “rate limitation” is introduced through a chemical reaction at the interface.

The systems formalism is used to obtain the interfacial concentration transients for power-law current input at an expanding plane electrode. The explicit results for the concentration transients obtained here pertain to arbitrary homogeneous reaction schemes coupled to the oxidant and reductant of a single charge-transfer step and the power-law form without and with a preceding blank period (for two types of power-law current profile, say, (i) I(t) = I0(t−t0)q for t greater-or-equal, slanted t0, I(t) = 0 for t < t0; and (ii) I(t) = I0tq for t greater-or-equal, slanted t0, I(t) = 0 for t < t0). Finally the potential transients are obtained using Padé approximants. The results of Galvez et al. (for E, CE, EC, aC) (J. Electroanal. Chem., 132 (1982) 15; 146 (1983) 221, 233, 243), Molina et al. (for E) (J. Electroanal. Chem., 227 (1987) 1 and Kies (for E) (J. Electroanal. Chem., 45 (1973) 71) are obtained as special cases.

The dissolution, accompanied by chemical reaction, of monodisperse solid particles has been analysed. The resulting model, which accounts for the variation of mass transfer coefficient with the size of the dissolving particles, yields an approximate analytical form of a kinetic function. Rigorous numerical and approximate analytical solutions have been obtained for the governing system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The transient nature of the dissolution process as well as the accuracy of the analytical solution is brought out by the rigorous numerical solution. The analytical solution is fairly accurate for the major part of the range of operational times encountered in practice.
