R-matrix with time-dependence theory is applied to electron-impact ionisation processes for He in the S-wave model. Cross sections for electron-impact excitation, ionisation and ionisation with excitation for impact energies between 25 and 225 eV are in excellent agreement with benchmark cross sections. Ultra-fast dynamics induced by a scattering event is observed through time-dependent signatures associated with autoionisation from doubly excited states. Further insight into dynamics can be obtained through examination of the spin components of the time-dependent wavefunction.

In this article we analytically solve the Hindmarsh-Rose model (Proc R Soc Lond B221:87-102, 1984) by means of a technique developed for strongly nonlinear problems-the step homotopy analysis method. This analytical algorithm, based on a modification of the standard homotopy analysis method, allows us to obtain a one-parameter family of explicit series solutions for the studied neuronal model. The Hindmarsh-Rose system represents a paradigmatic example of models developed to qualitatively reproduce the electrical activity of cell membranes. By using the homotopy solutions, we investigate the dynamical effect of two chosen biologically meaningful bifurcation parameters: the injected current I and the parameter r, representing the ratio of time scales between spiking (fast dynamics) and resting (slow dynamics). The auxiliary parameter involved in the analytical method provides us with an elegant way to ensure convergent series solutions of the neuronal model. Our analytical results are found to be in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations.

Industry's growing need for higher productivity is placing new demands on mechanisms connected with electrical motors, because these can easily lead to vibration problems due to fast dynamics. Furthermore, the nonlinear effects caused by a motor frequently reduce servo stability, which diminishes the controller's ability to predict and maintain speed. Hence, the flexibility of a mechanism and its control has become an important area of research. The basic approach in control system engineering is to assume that the mechanism connected to a motor is rigid, so that vibrations in the tool mechanism, reel, gripper or any apparatus connected to the motor are not taken into account. This might reduce the ability of the machine system to carry out its assignment and shorten the lifetime of the equipment. Nonetheless, it is usually more important to know how the mechanism, or in other words the load on the motor, behaves. A nonlinear load control method for a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor is developed and implemented in the thesis. The purpose of the controller is to track a flexible load to the desired velocity reference as fast as possible and without awkward oscillations. The control method is based on an adaptive backstepping algorithm with its stability ensured by the Lyapunov stability theorem. As a reference controller for the backstepping method, a hybrid neural controller is introduced in which the linear motor itself is controlled by a conventional PI velocity controller and the vibration of the associated flexible mechanism is suppressed from an outer control loop using a compensation signal from a multilayer perceptron network. To avoid the local minimum problem entailed in neural networks, the initial weights are searched for offline by means of a differential evolution algorithm. The states of a mechanical system for controllers are estimated using the Kalman filter. The theoretical results obtained from the control design are validated with the lumped mass model for a mechanism. Generalization of the mechanism allows the methods derived here to be widely implemented in machine automation. The control algorithms are first designed in a specially introduced nonlinear simulation model and then implemented in the physical linear motor using a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) application. The measurements prove that both controllers are capable of suppressing vibration, but that the backstepping method is superior to others due to its accuracy of response and stability properties.

Various researches in the field of econophysics has shown that fluid flow have analogous phenomena in financial market behavior, the typical parallelism being delivered between energy in fluids and information on markets. However, the geometry of the manifold on which market dynamics act out their dynamics (corporate space) is not yet known. In this thesis, utilizing a Seven year time series of prices of stocks used to compute S&P500 index on the New York Stock Exchange, we have created local chart to the corporate space with the goal of finding standing waves and other soliton like patterns in the behavior of stock price deviations from the S&P500 index. By first calculating the correlation matrix of normalized stock price deviations from the S&P500 index, we have performed a local singular value decomposition over a set of four different time windows as guides to the nature of patterns that may emerge. I turns out that in almost all cases, each singular vector is essentially determined by relatively small set of companies with big positive or negative weights on that singular vector. Over particular time windows, sometimes these weights are strongly correlated with at least one industrial sector and certain sectors are more prone to fast dynamics whereas others have longer standing waves.

This paper presents a new methodology for the operation and control of a single-phase current-source (CS) Boost Inverter, considering that the conventional current-source inverter (CSI) has a right-half-plane (RHP) zero in its control-to-output transfer function, and this RHP zero causes the known non-minimum-phase effects. In this context, a special design with low boost inductance and a multi-loop control is developed in order to assure stable and very fast dynamics. Furthermore, the Inverter presents output voltage with very low total harmonic distortion (THD), reduced components and high power density. Therefore, this paper presents the inverter operation, the proposed control technique, and main simulation and experimental results in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposal. © 2010 IEEE.

Networked control systems (NCSs) are distributed control systems in which the sensors, actuators, and controllers are physically separated and connected through an industrial network. The main challenge related to the development of NCSs is the degenerative effects caused by the inclusion of this communication network in the closed loop control. In order to mitigate these effects, co-simulation tools for NCS have been developed to study the network influence in the NCS. This paper presents a revision about co-simulation tools for NCS and the application of two of these tools for the design and evaluation of NCSs. The TrueTime and Jitterbug tools were used together to evaluate the main configuration parameter that affects the performance of CAN-based NCS and to verify the NCS quality of control under various timing conditions including different transmission period of messages and network delays. Therefore, the simulation results led to the conclusion that despite the transmission period of messages is the most significant factor among the analyzed in the design of NCS, its influence is related to the kind of system with greater effects in NCSs with fast dynamics.

GERMAN:Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit soll der Einfluß einerräumlichen Beschränkung auf die Dynamik einer unterkühltenFlüssigkeit charakterisiert werden. Insbesondere sollgeklärt werden, welche Rolle die Kooperativität derTeilchenbewegung bei niedrigen Temperaturen spielt. Hierzuuntersuchen wir mit Hilfe einer Molekulardynamik-Computersimulation die dynamischen Eigenschaften eineseinfachen Modellglasbildners, einer binäre Lennard-Jones-Flüssigkeit, für Systeme mit unterschiedlichen Geometrienund Wandarten. Durch geschickte Wahl der Wandpotentiale konnte erreichtwerden, daß die Struktur der Flüssigkeit mit der im Bulknahezu identisch ist.In Filmen mit glatten Wänden beobachtet man, daß dieDynamik der Flüssigkeit in der Nähe der Wand starkbeschleunigt ist und sich diese veränderte Dynamik bis weitin den Film ausbreitet. Den umgekehrten Effekt erhält man,wenn man eine strukturierte, rauhe Wand verwendet, in derenNähe die Dynamik stark verlangsamt ist.Die kontinuierliche Verlangsamung bzw. Beschleunigung derDynamik vom Verhalten an der Oberfläche zum Bulkverhaltenin genügend großem Abstand zur Wand können wirphänomenologisch beschreiben. Hieraus kann mancharakteristische dynamische Längenskalen ablesen, die mitsinkender Temperatur kontinuierlich anwachsen, d.h. derBereich, in dem die Existenz der Wand einen (indirekten)Einfluß auf die Dynamik eines Flüssigkeitsteilchens hat,breitet sich immer weiter aus. Man kann daher vonBereichen kooperativer Bewegung sprechen, die mit sinkenderTemperatur anwachsen.Unsere Untersuchungen von Röhren zeigen, daß aufgrund desstärkeren Einflusses der Wände die beobachteten Effektegrößer sind als in Filmgeometrie. Bei Reduzierung derSystemgröße zeigen sich immer größere Unterschiede zumBulkverhalten.

Constraints are widely present in the flight control problems: actuators saturations or flight envelope limitations are only some examples of that. The ability of Model Predictive Control (MPC) of dealing with the constraints joined with the increased computational power of modern calculators makes this approach attractive also for fast dynamics systems such as agile air vehicles. This PhD thesis presents the results, achieved at the Aerospace Engineering Department of the University of Bologna in collaboration with the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratories (NLR), concerning the development of a model predictive control system for small scale rotorcraft UAS. Several different predictive architectures have been evaluated and tested by means of simulation, as a result of this analysis the most promising one has been used to implement three different control systems: a Stability and Control Augmentation System, a trajectory tracking and a path following system. The systems have been compared with a corresponding baseline controller and showed several advantages in terms of performance, stability and robustness.

In dieser Arbeit werden nichtlineare Experimente zur Untersuchung der Dynamik in amorphen Festkörpern im Rahmen von Modellrechnungen diskutiert. Die Experimente beschäftigen sich mit der Frage nach dynamischen Heterogenitäten, worunter man das Vorliegen dynamischer Prozesse auf unterschiedlichen Zeitskalen versteht. Ist es möglich, gezielt 'langsame' oder 'schnelle' Dynamik in der Probe nachzuweisen, so ist die Existenz von dynamischen Heterogenitäten gezeigt. Ziel der Experimente sind deshalb sogenannte frequenzselektive Anregungen des Systems. In den beiden diskutierten Experimenten, zum einen nichtresonantes Lochbrennen, zum anderen ein ähnliches Experiment, das auf dem dynamischen Kerreffekt beruht, werden nichtlineare Antwortfunktionen gemessen. Um eine Probe in frequenzselektiver Weise anzuregen, werden zunächst einer oder mehrere Zyklen eines oszillierenden elektrischen Feldes an die Probe angelegt. Die Experimente werden zunächst im Terahertz-Bereich untersucht. Auf dieser Zeitskala findet man phonon-ähnliche kollektive Schwingungen in Gläsern. Diese Schwingungen werden durch (anharmonische) Brownsche Oszillatoren beschrieben. Der zentrale Befund der Modellrechnungen ist, daß eine frequenzselektive Anregung im Terahertz-Bereich möglich ist. Ein Nachweis dynamischer Heterogenitäten im Terahertz-Bereich ist somit durch beide Experimente möglich. Anschliessend wird das vorgestellte Kerreffekt-Experiment im Bereich wesentlich kleinerer Frequenzen diskutiert. Die langsame Reorientierungsdynamik in unterkühlten Flüssigkeiten wird dabei durch ein Rotationsdiffusionsmodell beschrieben. Es werden zum einen ein heterogenes und zum anderen ein homogenes Szenario zugrundegelegt. Es stellt sich heraus, daß wie beim Lochbrennen eine Unterscheidung durch das Experiment möglich ist. Das Kerreffekt-Experiment wird somit als eine relativ einfache Alternative zur Technik des nichtresonanten Lochbrennens vorgeschlagen.

A control-oriented model of a Dual Clutch Transmission was developed for real-time Hardware In the Loop (HIL) applications, to support model-based development of the DCT controller. The model is an innovative attempt to reproduce the fast dynamics of the actuation system while maintaining a step size large enough for real-time applications. The model comprehends a detailed physical description of hydraulic circuit, clutches, synchronizers and gears, and simplified vehicle and internal combustion engine sub-models. As the oil circulating in the system has a large bulk modulus, the pressure dynamics are very fast, possibly causing instability in a real-time simulation; the same challenge involves the servo valves dynamics, due to the very small masses of the moving elements. Therefore, the hydraulic circuit model has been modified and simplified without losing physical validity, in order to adapt it to the real-time simulation requirements. The results of offline simulations have been compared to on-board measurements to verify the validity of the developed model, that was then implemented in a HIL system and connected to the TCU (Transmission Control Unit). Several tests have been performed: electrical failure tests on sensors and actuators, hydraulic and mechanical failure tests on hydraulic valves, clutches and synchronizers, and application tests comprehending all the main features of the control performed by the TCU. Being based on physical laws, in every condition the model simulates a plausible reaction of the system. The first intensive use of the HIL application led to the validation of the new safety strategies implemented inside the TCU software. A test automation procedure has been developed to permit the execution of a pattern of tests without the interaction of the user; fully repeatable tests can be performed for non-regression verification, allowing the testing of new software releases in fully automatic mode.

Trotz des hohen Interesse an Ionischen Flüssigkeiten wird das zielgerichtete Design und die Anwendung Ionischer Flüssigkeiten durch fehlendes grundlegendes Verständnis erschwert. Deshalb wurde die Balance der molekularen Wechselwirkungen in Ionischen Flüssigkeiten studiert, um die Eigenschaften dieser zu verstehen und die Kraftfeldentwicklung im Rahmen des Multiskalenansatzes zu systematisieren. Es wurden reine Imidazolium-basierte Ionische Flüssigkeiten, Mischungen mit kleinen Molekülen und eine protische Ionische Flüssigkeit mit ab-initio-Methoden, hauptsächlich Car-Parrinello-Molekulardynamik, untersucht. Weiterhin wurden Eigenschaften der Flüssigphase mit denen von Ionenpaaren verglichen.rnIm Fokus standen die molekularen elektrostatischen Eigenschaften und es wurde gezeigt, dass Coulomb-Wechselwirkungen zu einzigartigen Charakteristika führten. So waren die Ionen-Nettoladungen stets reduziert, die molekularen Dipolmomentverteilungen sehr breit, elektronische Polarisation war entscheidend. Die elektrostatischen Eigenschaften waren allgemein lokal auf molekularen Größen- und Zeitskalen und hingen stark von Phasenzustand und Zusammensetzung ab. Für andere molekulare Eigenschaften, wie der Neigung zu dispersiven Kontakten oder Wasserstoffbrücken, wurde gezeigt, dass sie einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Feinstruktur Ionischer Flüssigkeiten hatten. Das Gleichgewicht der Wechselwirkungen zeigte sich auch in Leistungsspektren, die sich aus den ab-initio-Molekulardynamiksimulationen ergaben. Diese boten einen neuen Weg für den Vergleich zum Experiment und für einen Einblick in die schnelle Dynamik Ionischer Flüssigkeiten.

The electronic structure and properties of the orthorhombic phase of the CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite are computed with density functional theory. The structure, optimized using a van der Waals functional, reproduces closely the unit cell volume. The experimental band gap is reproduced accurately by combining spin-orbit effects and a hybrid functional in which the fraction of exact exchange is tuned self-consistently to the optical dielectric constant. Including spin-orbit coupling strongly reduces the anisotropy of the effective mass tensor, predicting a low electron effective mass in all crystal directions. The computed binding energy of the unrelaxed exciton agrees with experimental data, and the values found imply a fast exciton dissociation at ambient temperature. Also polaron masses for the separated carriers are estimated. The values of all these parameters agree with recent indications that fast dynamics and large carrier diffusion lengths are key in the high photovoltaic efficiencies shown by these materials.
